DescriptionsEdit Descriptions
- This series of bilingual Welsh/English biographies of Welsh 'greats' was aimed at secondary school children aged 11-13 / 11-15 years old. Several of the volumes are linked to anniversaries, including 'Hywel Dda, 928-1928' (1928), 'Daniel Owen, 1836-1895' (1936) and 'Thomas Charles, 1755-1814' (1955). From the forewords of several of the books, the Welsh text was the winner of the previous year's National Eisteddfod's University of Wales Press prize. The English translations were then provided by the original author, the University of Wales Press itself or some other, usually academic, translator. The subjects are overwhelmingly male, with 'Elizabeth Davies, 1789-1860' (1960) the only woman's biography currently listed here. It is not clear when the series started or finished, although the foreword (in Welsh only) to the Hywel Dda volume (1928) does feel introductory. (English, Member-written)
