The Curriculum Foundation Series is a Scott, Foresman publisher library of textbooks intended to teach reading and provide supplementary reading.Like many other reading textbook series of the time period, this series used the "controlled vocabulary" approach where a finite group of words were listed in the back of the volume.  Each word was used multiple times to teach reading by exposure and repetition.The main reading textbooks feature the characters Dick, Jane, and Sally with a dog named Spot and cat named Puff.  The wide use of these books in schools when the Baby Boom generation was growing up has caused these characters to hold a place of prominence in the U.S. popular culture beyond their peers from other publishers such as Alice and Jerry from Row, Peterson.The "Dick and Jane" textbooks, as they are also referred to were primarily issued in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.  However, there were also books with these character names in the 1930s.The kindergarten-level readers were called "pre-primers" and in the 1930s these titles used Dick and Jane as characters:Elson-Gray Pre-Primer (1930)More Dick and Jane (1934)By 1940 the modern titles were used, beginning with three pre-primers and the primer (1st grade) and later volumes:PP1 - We Look and SeePP2 - We Come and GoPP3 - We Work and Play1-1 Fun With Dick and Jane1-2 Our New Friends2-1 Friends and Neighbors2-2 More Friends and Neighbors... and so on.These core titles were published with variations in content in 1940, 1946, 1951, and 1956.  By the 1960s the titles had changed.
