- The central character is Chise Hatori, a 15-year-old Japanese girl. An orphan unwanted by her relatives, she sells herself as a slave, feeling that she no longer cares what happens to her, and perhaps someone who pays money for her will take care of her. Perhaps she also hopes that at this auction attended by magic workers, someone will value the powers that have been a burden to her and unsettled her relatives. Elias Ainsworth, a powerful mage, recognizes her great magical abilities and buys her, taking her to his home in England. Chise is a sleigh beggy, a person who can absorb large amounts of magic, and she is very attractive to the fey.
