107. A Midwife's Tale by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

4 stars

This book is rather complicated. With excerpts from Martha's diary, we are treated to a peek at life in Hallowell Maine from 1785-1812. Part of what fascinated me was the use of herbal remedies, and other resources close to hand.

In years past I have done a bit of study into these things myself, and was intrigued by how and what herbs were used by this woman who was midwife and doctor, nurse and friend to the women in her community. He usual fee was 6 pence, but she was often paid in goods or service and often according to the means of the family she visited. One family might pay nothing, and Martha would forgive the debt, just to see the woman brought to bed with her child safely and in good health for both. Another family would take pride in paying her very handsomely with goods and money far beyond what she requested.

Martha made her way to these families in the best and the worst of circumstances. A winters night might find her plowing through waist high snow on foot. Another early morning might find her ensconced in a carriage and carried by this means to her door. This, as you can imagine was a rare event. Far more often is was on foot or horseback.

It was common in those days for women to give birth every two years. This ensured that the family would have help needed to maintain their independence, as each child soon learned tasks that helped to provide the family with support of one kind or another. What tasks learned depended mostly upon the gender of the child, and the business of the family.

The research done by Ulrich provides us with a much broader view than we would have been given by Martha's diary alone. Comparisons are made to other towns, other locations regarding births, deaths and family occupation. IT is explained in simple terms how one family's reliance on other family's for
use of needed tools or trade was key to their survival. One family might weave and trade the cloth for wool. It seems to me that if we had to rely on others more these days we might try a little harder to be nicer to each other.

This is not to say that Martha's time was without local conflicts. For instance it was not uncommon for the head of the house to be jailed for debts. This would put his family into a very difficult and embarrassing situation.

Something else that interested me and also reminded me of another book was the relationship between the midwife and the male Doctor. In the beginning things were a lot simpler and there was a great deal of cooperation between doctor and midwife. As time passed, the doctors began to feel and act in a superior manner. Eventually midwives found themselves in a much inferior position to the doctor. These things are mentioned by the author more so than by Martha. Her account is more mundane, and lends itself to the simple daily activities of the families. She kept her house, raised her family and kept local birth and death records, as well as some rather gossipy accounts of who was getting up to no good around the town.

Without Martha's careful accounting there would be little record of the families of that time. There would have been no history for her own family of the triumphs and turmoils and moves and local history involving their ancestors.
This is undoubtedly a book of history, and should be considered so by any thinking of reading it. There are plenty of dates and dry patches, but it was interesting to me none the less.

If the topic of midwifery interests you, you might want to give it a read.. or if the history of Maine is what draws you in, this might be a book for you. I confess that it was much more of a history book then I expected, but I was determined to carry on . I am glad I did, but this one will not make it to my reread shelf.

I bought this book after reading The Birth House by Ami McKay. That is a novel based on the life of a midwife by the name of Rebecca Steele, and it takes place in Nova Scotia. I recommend both books, the former for history buffs and the latter for anyone who might enjoy an easier but not necessarily less informative read. Much of the information in The Birth House is historically correct. It was only the dearth of information on the life of Rebecca herself that turned it from a historic account into a novel.

I feel like I fret a lot of time away to not reading. . and I still managed to read at least 30 books this year. I may have other thoughts on the subject. . but for now I need to let that article stew in my brain a bit.

IT was one of those ... thank goodness I am home~ then take a breath and GRRRRRRRRRRR things. I lost the book I was reading somewhere between my chair and the door... took me 20 minutes to find it. Couldn't open a bottle of wine..or rather had to do battle with it.. sigh.. blasted cork. Just nothing.
then grr.

Well, it is another day. Hopefully the other book I can't find is at work .

On the good side, my daughter called me last night. Her hubby's app
for iPad went live ( and FREE) yesterday. It is a disaster preparedness app
for family use.

I am re-posting this in the kitchen.. please don't flag me for spam?
And spread the word to iPad having friends. :)

knee surgery? had that once, lol

caro.. the book I want to write is the one with anecdotal stories about day care from burned out employees. This is a corporate daycare.. has all of the certifications on the planet.. A fancy building.. sells itself well.. but if people only knew what they don't know about what goes on inside. No different from personally owned, shabby looking, edgy looking daycare. In fact, probably worse. Sadly, when parents do find out about things that happen...they do nothing. daycare is too hard to find. Happens every time.

Thursday.. sigh.. almost doesn't count in weekdays..

trick or treat tonight, our school "party" tomorrow.

party in our classroom does not mean fun... trust me
fun is not allowed
we follow the schedule exactly.. except.. pm goal time
is when we dress the kids up and "parade" them to the office to get candy..
then back to the classroom where they are not allowed to eat their treats.
they are ripped from their costumes ( often to their relief) and the day is finished according to schedule.

No movie, no games no nuthin.
Some parents will show up and help/watch...baffled, no doubt.
Still.. no fun. poor kids.

Once again, marcia has hung the artwork the kids made in the play area where we spend all of playtime trying to keep the kids from ripping it down.
Life is good.

eta
it is different in other classrooms.

Hey, Kath! I'm a little baffled about Trick or Treat night - tonight. Is this a town ordinance? Seems a bit early - might Sat night have been a better choice???

Are you gonna don a costume for the "party" at school? Maybe you could be Darth Vader and zap Marcia a good one! (only kidding!!!! don't do it!!!!) You seem more like the Old Mother Hubbard type (although NOT old - and your cupboard would be FULL of bones!) :)

Well.. the good news is..
the music teacher is having a dance, and she is going to have the "little" kids there for the first half hour.. so that will be fun. I had forgotten about that.
she did it last year too..

Tradition in this neck of the woods is Halloween is never on a friday, saturday or sunday. Friday interferes with high school football.. and they think too many people are on the roads on weekends. Stupid that.. have they ever looked at the cars that come out just FOR halloween?

lol kara.. that would be a hoot eh?
I have a headache.. :P but plan to make it go away.
I worked really hard today..
laundry .. supplies.. dishes.. floor sweeping.. oh and then there was the kids.
Most of the cleaning was done before the day actually began.
I am the only one in the room that gets us supplies.. aside from barb picking up a few chucks now and then.. and laundry? One of the aides in the next room and I share .. we do both rooms when we do it to save water..
today was a huge score, I got to do ours with a thrid room that was only going to put 3 shirts into the front loader. No comment.. but it all worked out in the end. I had to wait for the housekeeping dpt to get their floor mops out of the dryer before I could use it. They have a the old dryer but not hooked up..
They used to wash them in the washer we used for the kids clothes. We fought for new washer for the kids stuff for YEARS. Now our stuff actually gets clean.

why am i going on and on...............

Wow this childcare conversation scares me a bit. I hate to think of the regimentation of kids form such a young age (message 60). I walk past one of those corporate kiddie care centres and wonder why people would send their kids there, the staff even wear uniforms with pinstripes on them! TGIF! Have a great weekend, Kath!!!

Our town is having trick-or-treat tonight -- now as we speak. Only kids from our school district allowed to trick-or-treat in our borough. Date, time (5:30-7 p.m.) and allowed ages (my son is too old) are all set by borough. Kids must register with borough prior to start . . . hardly anyone comes to our neighborhood. It's such a short time-span, they concentrate on downtown where the housing is a bit denser. Plus nobody wants to climb our hill . . . They have a parade and a party at the community center afterwards for the little kids.

Kids become 'too cool' for trick-or-treating when they realize it's easier to go to the store and buy a bag(s) of their own candy instead of going through all the trouble of dressing up and walking door-to-door. "So, Billy, do you want to go trick-or-treating with your little sister this evening?" "Eh, nah...but will you buy me a bag of Snickers on your way back?" Hence, too cool. :P

never had a martini, Kath? It's never too late to start. :-) I make them at home every once in a bad day... some weeks that's everyday! haha. My favorite vodka martinis are made with KettleOne vodka.

used leftover chicken to make chicken parmesan with a side of linguini aglio olio for dinner.

substitute gin for vodka? Bombay Sapphire? works just as well.

It's probably a good idea not to drink everyday ....most weeks that works for me, but on certain weeks, either we're out with people everyday or stress galore.

I keep wondering .. you know.. in the 50's and 60's it was common to have a drink after work.
Why is it a bad thing? I think people were happier then. Maybe if some of these politicians would have a drink at the end of the day, they would be nicer people.

At the party I was at on Saturday, someone made really delicious cupcakes ... beautifully frosted (but I had to donate all my frosting because I don't like frosting .. too sweet) and oh so moist. I'm sorry! This thread is just plain UNhealthy! Cheese doodles, cupcakes and martinis??? Pah-leeeze!

I made out pretty good today (I mean yesterday now). Got free lobster rolls (piled high) for lunch and Hawaiian pizza/ real Italians for supper, grapes and homemade oatmeal cookies. Came home to a pile of books from Amazon I got for my birthday! Very cool.

Hope you have a nice day - I'll be sleeping in and reading and doing laundry - if all goes well. :)

Birthday? Someone said birthday? It's my aunt Letty's 82nd, but other than that I dunno. Linda was keeping a spreadsheet for a while, but that seems to have gone by the wayside. Now I see where all this birthday stuff is coming from. I slipped - under the influence of wine and fatigue. :p But I was just so excited to get a stack of books I ordered from my wishlist with my Amazon gift cert. Had to share.

I agree with Richard. *Did I just say that?* We have enough to keep track of without adding a thousand birthdays. We all love and sustain each other on a daily basis. I am happy for that!

There is a story on the early news about deer on the roads. Last friday, when I was on my way down the long and windy road from work.. a deer jumped over the hood of my car. ( I have a small car)

He was very big, and very .... lucky! No car was coming up the hill. I am always very careful on the hill because it is a place where I see deer
( and sometimes turkey) all the time. The speed limit is 25, and believe me, I do NOT go any faster.

When this happened, I was going down the hill.. this put the high side of the road on my passenger side, and it is much harder to see the deer coming from there.. going up is much easier to see.

Anyway.. all was well.. the deer and I both made it without a scratch.

239alcottacre
Nov 4, 2010, 6:11 am

I had a scare with a deer on an interstate in East Texas. I was going 70 miles an hour and had to swerve out of the way to avoid the deer, unfortunately puncturing one of my tires in the attempt. A truck driver seeing the accident came over to help out and check to be sure everyone was OK - Kerry and the girls were in the car with me. He told me that they were instructed in truck driving school that if that happened to them, just to hit the deer. That might work for truck drivers I suppose if you are driving a semi and not a Corolla like I was!

240mckait
Nov 4, 2010, 6:17 am

I would have been horrified if I had killed the deer. To be honest though.. I drive a Yaris, and I doubt I would do more than cause injury .. ? Not sure. I hope I never find out.

241London_StJ
Nov 4, 2010, 6:18 am

That might work for truck drivers I suppose if you are driving a semi and not a Corolla like I was!

Oh dear! I'm certain it *would* work for semi trucks - I can't imagine one trying to swerve would be a good thing - but it sounds like you had the correct response to me. Yikes - what a scare.

Kath, I'm glad you and the deer made it out without a scratch, and I hope you're feeling better this morning.

#240: I was the same way, Kath. The first thing I asked when I got out of the car (letting loose of the steering wheel took a minute) was how the deer was.

245Ape
Nov 4, 2010, 7:22 am

Deer are REALLY bad in my area. Speed limit is 45 on these back roads but you'll see a lot of people driving 30 or less simply because there are so many deer everywhere.

Of course, there are still those idiots who drive 60...I always eagerly anticipate seeing their car come flying downt he road with a big ol' dent in the hood. >:P

246drneutron
Nov 4, 2010, 8:28 am

We've had half a dozen seer collisions over the last decade. One Christmas, my old Blazer and my wife's Honda were both in the shop getting deer dents fixed. Once when in my current truck I was stopped in the road letting deer pass when another deer jumped down the embankment right into the side of my truck. In every case, the deer got up and ran away.

Our insurance agent told me something once that I thought was interesting. If you hit a deer at non-highway speeds in a car, you and the deer will probably survive. If you try to avoid the deer and hit a tree, the deer will be fine, but you'll be seriously screwed up or maybe dead. It's not hard and fast, but worth considering. The best policy is, a Stephen says, slow down and pay attention.

247alcottacre
Nov 4, 2010, 8:40 am

My car seems to be a squirrel magnet. I feel horrible when I nip one of those little guys. They're so quick and dance around my wheels - I think trying to avoid one would only get me in a ditch - They seem to be too smart for freeways.

251richardderus
Nov 4, 2010, 12:11 pm

In the part of Austin I used to live in, deer were considered rats on stilts by the locals and sacred, pweshus itty babe-ums by the people who didn't risk death and/or dismemberment at their frickin' antlers every time one pulled out the driveway.

One guess which side of the debate I fall on. Oh, and I also like venison better than turkey at Thanksgiving, if a further hint is needed.

239> Speaking of deer and tractor-trailers...we were driving down a country road and a logging truck was coming the opposite way, down a hill. We saw the headlights go out, blocked by a deer. The deer went kablewy - I had nightmares of obliterated deer for weeks. Unfortunately for the deer it was safer for the truck driver (and us) to do as he was instructed.

By the way, I hope you feel better soon, Kath.
