I've added a "Started by you" option to Talk. It shows the posts started... by you!

The title of the page still says "Topics you've posted to". Is that intentional?

Thanks for this, it is a much-desired feature.

Oct 30, 2010, 12:32 am

All of the first page returned are indeed threads that I started. If I click on 'next', however, it appears to return threads that I have at some stage posted to but not necessarily started.

I envy the ancient people who lived in Biblical times especially the days of Jesus! Without the blood sickness, I wanted to be the woman who threw herself down at Jesus' feet. Being a modern woman, I would have a pair of handcuffs to cuff myself to Jesus' ankles!

Goodevening or rather goodmornin!

If I go to that page, and then click on "next", the next page is not posts started by me.

Um, okay, but what does that have to do with this new feature?

Oct 30, 2010, 12:39 am

What fun! I fully intended to go to bed a few minutes ago, now I'm reliving the last three years of my LT posts, instead. I'm so okay with being a nerd.

Sometimes staying up into the early am hours gets interesting! You make it whatever you want it to be! Many of us are up for one reason or another. Pretend you are somewhere back in time! Pick a time zone and see yourself there. What would you be doing!

Well, six months ago I *was* in a different time zone, and chances are I'd have been doing this very same thing :) Thank goodness it's the weekend!

2008 I went to Italy, Greece, and Turkey! I toured with Carnival Cruise Lines! On board, it was great. On land, I took cabs and most of the time my eyes were closed. The cabbies drive like maniacs on sidewalks, squeezing between two buses, and exaggerated prices! Besides, I wore my 6 inch brim cowboy hat to maintain my space!

Cool and useful new feature, Tim. Thanks!

I didn't even remember LT pre-home page days until I found a post of mine about it; I am loving this new feature. And I can see it as a motivator for members to start more posts... We sure do love new stats around here :)

Actually I just noticed a bug here: if you're viewing "started by you," then click on the "next" page, it shows you something other than posts you started. I think it might be showing page 2 of your posts instead. At any rate, the second page onwards contains posts started by someone else.

So... Happy...

Oct 30, 2010, 1:44 am

Yes! Thanks Tim! I saw your post and got excited. Its late and I am tired! Sometimes its good for people to empty their guts - it eliminates unwanted gas and it stirs up the dickens. Goodnight All! catch up next time!

Oct 30, 2010, 2:15 am

Tim, is the order of the 'Your world' section open to discussion at all? If so would you prefer it here on in an RSI thread?

17alaudacorax
Oct 30, 2010, 7:34 am

When I click 'Started by you', the 'Your starred' page comes up.

18jimroberts
Oct 30, 2010, 10:00 am

It's a nice little feature, thank you, Tim. Like others, I find that the second page isn't right.

19_Zoe_
Oct 30, 2010, 10:35 am

Thanks for adding this.

Now what we need is a way to view multiple options at one time, especially Your Starred + Your Groups, so that we can easily follow individual threads of interest in groups that we aren't generally interested in.

20ErlendSkjelten
Oct 30, 2010, 10:55 am

I'm having the same problem as in 17: Clicking "Started by you" on the home page brings up "Your starred".

21justjim
Edited: Oct 30, 2010, 11:08 am

Another problem: I sorted by topic by clicking on the column header and I got this...

I was hoping that sort by topic would group the threads by groups, but where '50-Something LibraryThingers is a group and the threads are sorted after the colon (:), the first on the list is a thread from the Bug collectors group but that's not mentioned!

Note also the annotations about the date of the first thread on the list and the fact that I didn't, in fact, start any of the others.

Edited: Messing with the width.

Oct 30, 2010, 11:10 am

This is good to have: thanks, Tim.

I get the Your Starred rather than Started By You on the home page, too.

(Can't comment on the second page issue: my threads only run to one page. I must be shockingly antisocial.)

23Eat_Read_Knit
Oct 30, 2010, 11:17 am

#21 Sorting by unread messages also brings up the results from (I think) Your Posts instead of Started By You.

24Noisy
Oct 30, 2010, 11:54 am

An interesting feature.

However, when I first saw the topic, I clicked 'Statistics/Memes' and then 'Goups and Talk' under Social, and nothing was there. After some puzzling, I noticed in the left menu bar of Talk. Now, I know I'm weird, but isn't the stats/memes page where it should really be?

25justjim
Edited: Oct 30, 2010, 12:03 pm

>24 Noisy: I think that the 'Groups and Talk' area of the 'Statistics/Memes' page would be a great place to summarise how many talk threads a member has started.

The 'Your world' left sub-nav of the 'Talk' tab is surely the right place to find exactly which threads they were, wouldn't you say?

26auntSteelbreaker
Oct 30, 2010, 12:36 pm

I'm getting my starred instead of my started too, but that might be because I have never started a topic. It might also be a misspelling. If so the links should have their spelling corrected: "Starred by you | Your starred"

27Noisy
Oct 30, 2010, 12:36 pm

>25 justjim:

Well, yes. But it's not something I'll be referring to that often, so I'd rather it was on a page that I only infrequently visited. I know that people who start threads on a regular basis (and have a better memory that I about the subjects they discussed) would find this useful. I'm just wondering how many people that is.

28auntSteelbreaker

@27 If they lack in number they probably make it up in terms of talk activity.

I'm so glad to have this feature! (I'm also having the same issue as rsterling in post #13.)

30lilithcat
Oct 30, 2010, 2:17 pm

I'm getting "Topics you posted to", rather than "Topics you've started".

31EveleenM
Oct 30, 2010, 2:45 pm

This is great!

The page I'm getting says "Topics you posted to", but the topics showing are all the ones I started. I've only got one page, though, so I can't say what happens on a second page.

32brightcopy
Oct 30, 2010, 2:48 pm

It's amazing how many times the same problem is "discovered" by different users. :D

I think it shows how awesome the feature is. People read Tim's first message, are overjoyed and immediately try the feature, see the bugs and pop back here to post about it. They forget there's already been tons of messages to read in the thread. I almost did it myself.

33Citizenjoyce
Oct 30, 2010, 2:50 pm

"Started by you" also get me to "Your starred". Too bad, it seems like a good idea.

I made bug reports for the 2 bugs I've noticed people reporting here. Are there more?

No worries! I've semi-solved the December 1969 bug thread circled at #21 above. It's supposed to point to topic 101311 but when I submitted that post I, quite ironically, got a trained monkeys error. I retyped it and it got submitted correctly as topic 101312. Topic 101311 appears to be an orphan with no group, and it does not appear when the link is clicked.

Edit: Everything else seems to work nicely now. Good work. Like it!

40timspalding
Oct 31, 2010, 1:25 am

Well, my point is that your posts is not a minor feature. It's a list of the threads you've contributed to. Started by you is just a list of the ones you've started. If everyone monitored that, nobody would post on anyone else's threads...

Tim

41brightcopy
Oct 31, 2010, 1:30 am

If everyone monitored Your posts, they'd never post on anyone else's threads...

I think maybe you're thinking of Your groups?

This is cool. Would this be a good occasion to work on not all one’s posts being displayed?

48kgriffith
Nov 1, 2010, 9:42 pm

Could this easily be added as a profile module, with an opt-out/opt-in feature? Maybe between "Groups" and "Favorite Authors" on the profile page?

49jjwilson61
Nov 2, 2010, 10:06 am

47> Other people seem to be able to see their dormant threads so that problem is a bug, not a new feature. If you report it in the Bug Collectors group it should get looked at.

51bonniebooks
Nov 3, 2010, 2:19 pm

Thanks, Tim! Now I can find my latest thread without having to link it--though will probably link it anyway for others. Is there any way for other LT-ers to click on to that link and see what threads I've started?

52jjmcgaffey
Nov 3, 2010, 3:19 pm

48> I doubt it very much - makes it way too easy to 'stalk' someone. Tim's already refused to make 'all messages I've posted' available on the Stats/Memes pages, for that reason.

It is available to you on your Home page - one of the choices in the Talk module. But I doubt it will become available to others for you.
