I just deleted two books on my wishlist and the immediate message upon pressing the delete button from the details page for both was:

"Problem
This is a private book."

I can view the books I just deleted however, and they have been removed from my wishlist. I never marked the book private.

Were they added manually? Because I was getting the same thing, and then I noticed that the "Private" box is checked by default for manual entries.

No, added from amazon.com. Not made private.

Private is still a beta feature and doesn't really do anything (whether or not the checkbox is checked, it doesn't actually go private). This may be an example of this bug http://www.librarything.com/topic/100867 (where you posted first, bookel), or not - Tim said he'd fixed that one, but deleting may mess it up again. In that case the problem was that a newly-added book hadn't propagated to all the databases necessary for editing, and the system was reading that fact as it being private. In this case...it got removed from some databases but not others and again got read as private? Maybe. Or something completely unrelated. But with this new post, Tim (et al) should be able to check it out.

This has happened to me, too. A couple of times when I have added a second copy of a book, then deleted the original copy, I got the private book message. But the original book appears to have deleted (as completely as anything ever deletes), and there is no sign of it anywhere in my catalogue.

It is definitely still happening. Again I deleted a wishlist book, and I never made the book private! Argh. The book deleted, but the message came up when I tried to go back and look at the book (and checking the edit details page it was not marked private at all).

Just had this happen with three books I deleted. They are owned by other people, *not* private libraries, the book was never private in my account, and it was not a manual add. What the heck is going on? (I'm fairly curious about exactly what is making this bug happen)

my books are now fixed

Got the "This is a private book." error after deleting a book today. Book was not marked private. It was added 2010-08-09 from ILCSO (Illinois Libraries).

Here's the book URL before I deleted it, if it helps:

And here's the work:

I deleted a load of works from my wishlist recently but most of them still show up on my profile, and when I try and access the titles, the 'private book' message appears. It confuses me because the first set of deletions didn't cause a problem and I didn't do anything different the second time around.

like others i just got a "this book is private" message after deleting a book from the work page.

i deleted it from catalog view with no problem- at least none that i've noticed. but it's a strange bug.

Just deleted three public books that had not been marked private and still, far as I know, have public copies on LT.

All three failed to delete. All three lead to a "this is a private book" message. So we cannot delete books now?

I deleted while on my copy of the book by clicking on the "delete" button (however that is worded).

On phone, do not have ability to copy and paste link, and there are no square brackets on the phone keyboard.

Just wait a bit - it seems that this is a bug related to the one I linked in Message 4. It's matter of caching and databases out of sync, so they should go away pretty soon (4-24 hours, is my guess). But I really wish Tim or somebody would comment on this thread...that private thing is being a pain.

Were your deletions from the book pages or from your catalog? Both have a delete button (red x). I don't know that it makes any difference, but clearer is always better...

Book page.

Just checked, it does not clear in 7 hours after deleting on work page.

A different but related bug is Test of Wills by Charles Todd. I accidently created a duplicate copy. Original deleted. Luckily enough, that does not block access to the book. The bug involves the add page still telling me that the book is a dup. One the work page itself it only lists the one copy I have left instead of includingfibv that dup line.

I don't get the "this is a private book" message, but I've also been encountering minor issues with deleting books. Maybe there's an underlying coding issue that connects these problems?

Deleting from the work page, I just get a blank page afterward with this URL form (it does, at least, delete the book). I removed the deleteid number and put {NUMBERHERE} where it would go:
http:// www.librarything.com/ deletebook.php?deleteid={NUMBERHERE}&referpage=

The same happens whether I use the button on the main work page, the red x on the book details page, or the red x on the edit your book page.

Deleting from the catalog page using power edit, it does delete, but I get this error message:
"The page isn't redirecting properly
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.
This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept
cookies."

Deleting from the catalog page using the red X (not power edit mode, just regular mode), I get a blank page with this URL form. Again, it does at least seem to delete it:
http://www.librarything.com/ deletebook.php?deleteid={NUMBERHERE}

I occasionally still get a private book message when deleting books even though none of mine are private. I delete from the Details page of the book(s).

Seen this a half dozen times today.

So, this happens when you do:

Details -> Edit -> Delete

It goes back to the page you were on before the edit, which doesn't exist. I don't want to have it remember many many back—after all, you could go details, edit, details, edit, details, edit, delete! So I propose it just go to your catalog. Does that sound okay?

I've implemented that. Thanks.

Sounds good to me.

I'd rather go to the author page (to see my other books by that author, and mainly to see if the book actually deleted as sometimes it still shows as existing due to caching) or if I have more than one copy of this book I'm deleting, the book main page itself. Both those options are faster. Going to the library catalog view takes a long time, especially if the catalog is larger.

There is still the bug of "problem this book is deleted" (another message seen) and "problem this is a private book" when deleting.
