Good morning, Kath. Happy Saturday!
8mckait
Good morning all... Saturday mornings are good. I feel like I can take the time to breathe. :)
I have finally posted a review of Final Flight. I do not Like waiting a day or two between reading writing the review, as I sometimes lose the "feel" of the book. In any case it is done. This was an LTER book, and It was a good choice.

#10: That one is available for the Nook so once my book buying ban is over, I am going to download it. The book sounds right up my alley, WWII buff that I am.
12mckait
I think that you will like it.. it is an easy and very interesting read.. or it was for me. :) I am not a WWII buff, but I did like it.
15Ape
But you are so close to 20 threads! Why, if you try hard enough you might have more threads than I have years spent on this planet. You must continue!
Oh, and I LOVE the picture in the first post. :)

Now here is an interesting dilemna:
I don't feel any interest in this topic, but
You gave it 4 stars, and
LT says I will "Love it" ,and
the "like" arrow is all the way to the right!
Never saw that before... hmmm...

interesting dilemma indeed...but it said that to me too... seconds before I posted my review, could it be stuck? The LTDD ( LibraryThing DooDad) has a mind of it's own and sometimes a sense of humor, too.. so beware!! LOL

I am taking a semi-lazy day...waiting for the sun to fully shine before I pick up the tree trash from the yard (high winds last week!)....made chili yesterday so food is not an issue...I really want to curl up under a blankie and read, though....
Good review of Final Flight and a Thumb from me...

Oh, Hi Kath! I dozed off on the rocker in post #1. Thank goodness the dog needed to go out or I would not have noticed Final Flight. LT meter says I will love it but its prediction confidence is very low. What's with that? Wishlisted based on your review.

Loved your review of Final Flight, Kath ... needless to say, I've added that to my obese wish lit. Are you enjoying a wonderful Fall day?

Hi Kath. Excellent review of Final Flight: it sounds like a fascinating book.

My goodness.... thank you all for your kind words and kind thumbs :)
:) Final Flight came to me as an LTER. Dan wants to read it.. when he does I can pass it on.. but it might be a while. Still..
Welcome Sonya! I hope you decide to stay and play...
Now that you are no longer working for LT, you may have a bit more time to
have some fun with it. . . and to do some reading. Although with a beautiful little one lie 80...time may still be short..
So, remember a few days ago when one of our students scratched across my eyes? I now have conjunctivitis in that eye. Connection? betya. sigh. I suspected it yesterday morning ... but then sort of forgot about it... but did notice progressive feeling of irritation and tearing.. and this morning..
I have ghastly eye. Red, itchy and nasty. Woe is me.

Glad to see that you likedTime and Again. I very seldom read reviews before I read a book. Some reviews just tell too much about a book. I did like your review of Final Flight.
Warm compresses for your eye. Hope it gets better. You may have to stay home from work tomorrow;-)

:) Thank you for the advice.. :)
Yes... it has occurred to me that I might have to bite the bullet and stay home..
I will probably have to be cleared to go back in. oh well.
glad you liked the review.. I do try hard to not tell too much... and still say enough. I sometimes fail on one count or the other though... :(
I read Time and Again twice at least.. years ago. Still have it on my shelf :)

book 114. Fragile by Lisa Unger
A mystery in a small town with more secrets than anyone suspects.
A good Saturday afternoon read. 4 stars.. review posted.
eta:
I think my next read will also be a Vine commitment...
Final Price by J Gregory Smith. This was requested by my alter ego
and the cover, which is different from the one on the Vine list which was the same as the cover shown here at LT, makes me cringe. Time for it to go.. so I will read it today. It might be better to read it with just one eye :P

Morning Kath- Yes, you received a flurry of thumbs and all well-deserved! I'd be interested in the book, sometime down the road. :-)
Stephen has been working you over on trying a graphic, huh? Like he said, it can't hurt to give it a try, if it's not your cuppa, well then whatever!
Hope you eye is feeling better and have a good Sunday!

Don't tell him, but because of his incessant nagging. . . I ordered Mr. Mendoza's Paintbrush. I figure that if I am going to try a graphic, it will be with an author I know and love :) Then I will look at something else. Besides. The cover of that blasted book has stayed with me since I first saw it.

Kath!
You've been a reading maniac!
I didn't know you were about to plunge into a graphic novel, too! Cool.
This LT group is successfully working its way around our brains - tempting us into new adventures... I'm making a list and going to the bookstore to check out recs I've solicited.
Sorry to hear about the eye thing - unless of course it gets you a Monday off!
Well, not really... you don't want to mess around with your eyes. Of course it has to happen on a Sunday - making it harder to get eye meds. :(
Hope it is manageable and not too uncomfortable... take good care.

55: Oh no no no, not like that. She uses big needles and heavy metal instruments...no worries...

Love Caro's gif. She's got a bag full of whatever's appropriate.

Scaring the kids sounds interesting.. but alas is frowned upon :)
115. Final Price by J. Gregory Smith
.5, because it is not possible to give negative stars, not here, not at Amazon.
A slasher movie in print, maybe?
I admit to being unsure when I requested this one from Vine.
I was afraid that it would be too much. But then, it was described
as a thriller. I like a GOOD thriller. I did not like this.
Shamus is an unhappy man. He was abused as a youngster by his his grandmother. Once she was dead and not quite gone, she continued to encourage him to "punish" himself. He did as directed.
Chang is a homicide detective. He has some serious issues
of his own. Violence barely controlled beneath a mostly
calm exterior. His past partner, current friend Nelson is probably
the most normal of the bunch. Once you meet him, you might find that
a bit disturbing.

Cool beans! Almost worth a scratched eye, huh?
77mckait
well... I don't know if I would go that far..
the resulting conjunctivitis has been pretty unpleasant.
Now starting on the second eye. Due to a SEVERE case I had a long time
ago.. I get very leary about it. I lost 2 weeks of work that time.
My eyes were swollen shut. Driving through a blur is no fun. :P
But .. it wont get that bad this time... hopefully.. so.
I will do a lot of turkey day stuff tomorrow :)

Conjunctivitis/"Pink Eye" is no fun...no way. I remember in 5th grade...it went through the school like wildfire...small school was rather crowded for starters..but jeesh, that was messy and painful and generally crappy....and the vestiges do hang around..
Try to have a good day..i'm sending good vibes your way..

No offense taken, Kath :) The only reason I can do it is because I am awake when the family is asleep. I generally do not read when hubby is home. Too distracting and I like to spend my evenings with him.
I agree with you about RD. He is the most curmudgeonly dear around.

WooHoooooo!!!!! Is your "another day off" today or tomorrow?
Ok, you had to go to extremes to do it... but it gives your mental health time to get happy... you got eyedrops... and you get to rest a little with the furkids.
By Thanksgiving you'll be golden (instead of exhausted)!

By Thanksgiving you'll be golden (instead of exhausted)!

I spent countless minutes building it! I used popsicle sticks from grape popsicles only and the finest scotch tape I could find at Wal-Mart. Isn't it just perfect!? *Watches as it slowly crumbles before his eyes* ...oh, how ominous...

Yep.. tomorrow too :)
One day of work only this week.
Marcia very kindly emailed me to tell me that 3 of the kids were out.. sigh.
figures!
But I will do a few things tomorrow..
not too much :) some odds and ends. I did some shopping online again..
I only have some gift cards left.. and a few other things.
:)
I went Into a toy store today ToysRUs . I was looking for a dragon that they had on the website. I got there right about when they opened. I wandered a bit and was absolutely lost. I asked one of the several standing around for help.
one woman used a phone to call someone else.. who said "We don't have anything like that.. send her to the purple area" uh huh. Ok. I gamely went to the purple area where they had no dragons that were not movie tie ins. Off I went. .. To home, to buy online.
I did not go to a bookstore though.. :P

Growing Up Psychic: From Skeptic to Believer by Michael Bodine
Moderately interesting story about the Bodine family and how they grew.
They are apparently well known psychics that I have never heard of. I will explore a bit more on the google, and let you know if I come up with anything interesting.

Really? I mean, I could be way off here, but isn't breast cancer one of the most heavily funded forms of cancer there is? I know there is a lot more publicity for it than any other, at least. *shrug* Do you really think ~every~ scientist on the planet is snubbing breast cancer research out of sexism?
I've got my fingers crossed, Kath. Hoping for good news...let us know how everything goes. *hugs*

And my response was more directed towards the comment that the test would be more accurate if men had to go through it. I can't imagine it would make a difference. It's hard to believe that every scientist and engineer on the planet is sexist enough to not care how accurate or comfortable the current test is.
Not trying to sound agressive or offensive or anything... ...breast cancer is just an aweful thing, and it would be silly to bring sexism into it. :(

I don't thing she meant that.. I think she meant the procedure.
If testicular cancer were screened for by squashing said testes between a couple of plates.. similar to squashing breasts.. a new system might be found. It has in fact, but is not typically used.. Sonigram, MRI.. insurance will not pay for those in most cases :) only those with money can afford the more comfortable and most likely better options.

No doubt about it -- breast cancer is scary awful, and I've lost several dear friends to it. If you have a family history of it, I'm sure the mammogramn is a lot more stressful for you than mine are, Kath. I'll try to remember to send good energy your way on the 29th of next month. (scheduled so far in advance? wow. awful long to be thinking/worrying about it, IMO.)
As for the sexism thing, I can think of some exams men have to have that aren't that pleasant, either, from what I've heard.
I actually think breast cancer gets extra attention these days, perhaps to make up for how it may have been neglected years ago by a male medical establishment. Now there are pink ribbon this and that's all over the place. Even macho NASCAR drivers racing in pink cars for breast cancer awareness. My old fitness club gave a membership discount if you brought in proof of a recent mammogram (helped me afford the membership fee for a while). You don't see that for colon cancer. Or for lung cancer -- which, while not as common, actually KILLS more women than breast cancer (including my mother and several other family members) because there is no early screening procedure for it, unless you happen to need a chest x-ray for something else.
I'm rambling. I should shut up now. I'm "talking" too much today. Dunno why. Mood, I guess.

Oh, Stephen. I'm sorry. That did sound sexist, but I don't mean it as harshly as it hit you. Please don't get upset... I do hear you and agree. I don't believe sexism is a factor in finding cures for any kind of cancer. There are women scientists too... and everyone cares about cancer cures.
Even if cancer is a big money maker now, just think how much people will pay for a CURE!!!
(imho) I think we will find that cancers are different and we WILL eventually figure out treatments that will work (if we don't annihilate the earth first). We have actually come a long way... but have even further to go.
My thought was this - men's screening for prostate cancer is a blood test. Simple. And even at that... there is much whining! It's certainly much simpler than a mammogram. I'll opt for a blood test any day!
Also, with all the pressure on women having mammos, they aren't nearly accurate enough. They are too chancey and hard to read. There are other (newer) procedures - not covered by insurance, not widely used, and still not great. It's the detection methods that need to be improved.
Breast cancer is a scary thing - there's nuthin' simple about it, I guess. :(

Agreed, Kath. No one wants to solve a profitable problem.
Prostate cancer screenings only start with blood tests. Then there's the dreaded finger-up-the-ass check, which scares the bejabbers out of most straight guys. Not because of what's being done, but because it's a man doing it.
Idiots. It's A medical procedure. Pull up your socks while you're bent over and grow up.
But no...the cancer industry is firmly entrenched. No chance in hell it'll be cured unless/until a replacement problem is found. Ha.

I might add, breast cancer screenings "only start" with mammos. There's plenty more if anything is "suspicious". Been there, done that. Turns out unnecessarily. Horrid experiences all tangled up with fear, humiliation, insensitive surgeon, pain and anger. :P

The image on the child find card looked alarmingly like her adopted son.
Journalist Ellen Gleeson began looking into why she had that feeling that
something was very wrong. Most of us know we should trust our feelings.
Even when we don't want to. This book explores the loss of a child. Loss by
death, abduction or whatever else the universe sends our way. I admit that it was better than I thought it would be. One additional star for the ending. :)
go ahead, read it :)

Cory was here. I met his new g/f and I like her a lot.
We ate early.. one-ish, and I just made a sandwich with turkey and mayo and lettuce. yum. My stuffing was so good and there is so much of it! lol. I love to warm a bit of it to eat first thing the day after :) Plenty of it for that.. oh and this was a great batch of gravy this year. All in all .. life is good.
I hope things went as well for all of you :)

Yes, today was "the way life should be"!
Perfect dinner, company, fun...
and pies for dessert!
Happy for you to have a day you can enjoy to your heart's content...
followed by a mini-vaca. WooHoo!
You might be having stuffing for breakfast tomorrow -
I am having warm apple pie! :)

One of the best things Cory posted on his profile at FB.. " I don't sit back and let things happen to me - I go out and happen to things..."
and it is true, he does.. I love being around him.

Cory's new GF gets The Seal! W00t! Sounds like a pleasant, mellow day. And no work until TUESDAY!!!!
I posted menu and commentary on my thread a little while ago.
I got the very worst haircut of my adult life before guests came. I look like Zippy the Pinhead from the old comic book. Goddesses know I'm not vain about my looks, but this is hideous!

Hi Kath!
Are you bored yet? LOL
What will you do with yourself for 4 more days?
So many choices. See? That's what retirement is like.
We had a bit of snow this AM. Rain washed it away, but I'm ready for Christmas now!
Half the gang went shopping. This is not my favorite day of the year for that. I will relax today. REAL turkey sandwiches for lunch!
ETA - sorry. DBL posted. :P

192mckait
She was afraid it was strep. Ok.. but still.. he went from here to Pine twp.. ( 45 min?)picked her up .. took her to cranberry to a dr and to walmart to buy dog food, out to eat... ( I was waiting for him here at home to eat) took her to her moms to pick up her dogs, is driving her to her house in pittsburgh. Then ( I will believe it when I see it ) back here. ( another 45 minutes from her house. )
Sorry, but really? What would she have done if he was down in Annapolis?
It's as ore throat, not a broken leg. Well.. it is one thing to want pampering.. another to demand it. Sigh. I am sounding bitchy.. because I am feeling it. All I need is another daughter in law who wants waited on. That was not the plan for my boys.. 50/50.. not servitude. Gak.

Morning.
I am feeling a bit stressed this a.m.
Cory found a lump on Duncan's back.
My vet is still closed.. until monday..
and only the goddess knows when he will
actually be IN. I emailed him
nothing back yet.
Always something eh?
I am preferring to believe it is a fatty tumor instead of ..
what he had last spring.
cross fingers ok?

so I am hanging on to the justa bump theory.

Pacifist? Well, it doesn't mean you can't kill me unintentionally. Merely showing up at my door is liable to incite a heart attack, especially if you show up with that crazed look in your eye...and an eye patch over the other!

Not much we can do about the choices our boys make. I got lucky with one, and the other two are still up for grabs. They can stay that way as far as I'm concerned.

I didn't know there was a new Alice Hoffman book! Thanks for this information. Thumbs up on your excellent review.
Closing to see if my library has a copy of this book...I hope..I hope..I hope.
Alice Hoffman is one of my top favorite authors.
Please keep us posted regarding Duncan. My sheltie Simon has a number of bumps. The vet told me this was normal for an aging dog. Let's hope the same is true for Duncan.

I think that Hoffman fans will like this one. I liked the idea of standing in the same spot, watching the changed that took place and the people who lived there down through time.
Agreed Terri. My daughter found a good man.. I struggle with my daughter in law..but he says he is happy. so ..
Cory called me last night.. he may be home today. Probably sick.. lol. I just want my kids to have good partners that will love and care for them.. Not have a one sided care taker gig for life. That is no fun at all
Thanks Linda.. it is true, I know. But after our bout in the spring.. I worry.
I still think it will be okay, but .. you know how it is.

So far the series is 2 books cuz this is the new one.

I usually get to a book after it's been out for quite some time.

247mckait
yes, he does. He was dx a few months after I brought him home from the sanctuary.
WE didn't know what it was at first.. took 10 days and 10 trips to local vet.. never got a dx there.. took him to specialists in Akron..
The best vet in the world dx him by looking at his bloodwork from day one..
and getting his ratio. She saved his life. He has been pretty healthy since then..
Thanks to my vet stepping up.. and me being a little neurotic about his care :)
He should live a full life span.. he is now 7-9 yrs old? hard to know.. maybe 8. He was found on the streets as an adult..
