The question was Posted by SomeGuyInVirginia:

TPBM has worked in one of those historical reenactment places, like Williamsburg or Mystic Sea Port.

No, but I've been to both.

TPBM thinks that Reenactors are an odd lot.

Yes, actually I do. But whatever trips their triggers is fine with me. :)

TPBM prefers wearing silver jewelry to gold jewelry.

3Mr.Durick
Nov 24, 2010, 5:26 pm

Knowing that silver matches shades of gray and blue better than gold does, I should. But I really prefer gold. That said, I wear very little jewelry. Gold would, to my taste, show up in pocket watches and fountain pens; my collections are not full of gold pocket watches and fountain pens though.

The person below me likes their gold straight, in bars, ingots, and coins.

4SomeGuyInVirginia
Nov 24, 2010, 5:48 pm

I have one gold coin; I think it's a $2.50 piece minted in the 1870s and is about as big as the end of a pencil eraser. I agree with km that silver looks better than gold.

>>1 WholeHouseLibrary: WHL- I think those people who reenact battles really are nuts. It's nothing like kids playing cops and robbers, and there's nothing in my understanding that would lend empathy to dressing like a Confederate or Union soldier, or a Crusader, and pretend in a situation where the first principle is not to stay alive and not die but to stay down when you're declared dead.

TPBM had gold knickknacks.

5Nicole_VanK
Edited: Nov 24, 2010, 5:55 pm

I agree I like the look of silver better than that of gold myself. BUT if it goes to monetary value : oi vay ;-)

#4: Agree, the Pixar short is pure gold.

TPBM has gold dental crowns.

We are NOT going for eachother's gold dental work! Sorry, but you have to draw the line somewhere. ;-)

8Mr.Durick
Nov 24, 2010, 6:19 pm

In response to 6. I have three or four of them; I'd actually have to look to know. They work well, but for gold I prefer my coins.

The person below me has porcelain dental crowns.

ETA : (Sorry, I don't know what came over me. Didn't mean to spoil the fun. Please ignore.)

10abbottthomas
Nov 24, 2010, 7:12 pm

I don't either - when I last saw my dentist he sais that he thought my teeth would see me out. I suppose that's a comfort.

TPBM has been told they grind their teeth

11RandomActofMuse
Nov 24, 2010, 8:04 pm

I have been told that, and I'm fully aware that I do it; I wake up with headaches and jaw pain sometimes, but all the OTC mouth guard things I've tried hurt me. I can't afford to see a dentist about a properly-fitting one yet.

BarkingMatt - It's very hard to continue the game if you don't provide a prompt for the next person to respond to. Like so:

TPBM knows a very smart child.

12SylviaC

I do, and we're trying to figure what to do with him.

TBPM thinks that getting along with people is much more important than getting along in school.

13AnnaClaire

Yes, but that (theoretically) doesn't justify completely slacking off academically, either.

The person below me is listening to a podcast.

Dolphins do broadcasts? Blimey, I am falling behind with this technology lark...

TPBM has seen a whale or dolphin.

15karenmarie
Nov 25, 2010, 6:28 am

Yes I have. But probably not the way you're expecting someone to answer. Marineland of the Pacific when I was a child in Southern California and SeaWorld.

TPBM loves SeaWorld, Marineland, Aquarium types of experiences.

*Leapfrogged*

Yes! Returning from Ireland to Wales recently on a very windy day I went on deck to blow away my mild seasickness and there, swimming along in the lee of the ferry were 4-5 dolphins in a tight formation. Amazing to see them clearing the rough sea so effortlessly. - a beautiful sight.

Having answered #14 thus, I have to say that I hate to see cetaceans confined in aquaria - Free Willy! I quite like big tanks with lots of small fish, though.

TPBM has has a close encounter with a shark

17justjim
Nov 25, 2010, 7:57 am

Yes but it was a whale shark. Monstrous great animal, but harmless unless it accidentally bumps into you!

TPBM is of the belief that if sharks will stay out of their house, they will happily return the favor and stay out of the sea.

18SylviaC
Nov 25, 2010, 8:45 am

Why, yes. That seems like a perfectly reasonable compromise to me.

TPBM has gone scuba diving in a coral reef.

19girlfromshangrila
Edited: Nov 25, 2010, 9:26 am

Nope, but it's on my bucket list.

I have, however, canooed around mangrove swamps and marveled at the diversity of animal and floral life in them.

I don't know what the link between the two experiences is, but it just sprung up in my mind, so there.

> 14: I've seen dolphins within meters of distance, playing in "my" yatch's wake with such glee that I was almost tempted to join them. =)

TPBM has gone scuba diving in a coral reef.

20SomeGuyInVirginia

No, although I'd like to try it. I've got a cousin who's a treasure hunter in Florida; now that I would LOVE to do.

(Happy Turkle Dee, everybody.)

TPBM found something interesting that's been buried for a long time. (Writing 'my sense of dignity' doesn't count, having found a Roman coin does.)

21justjim

Under those rules, "Gran'mama" probably wouldn't be accepted either. So I'll have to pass.

The person below me has an antique something or other he or she really likes.

23SylviaC

No, no. I wouldn't say he's antique. Just middle aged.

TPBM has an antique object he or she really likes.

24PhaedraB
Nov 25, 2010, 11:32 pm

My grandfather's humidor. It's floor-standing, with a copper-lined chamber and a no longer functioning clock set into the door. I don't know if it hits the 100 years old mark for an "official" antique, but my dad said he remembered that Grandpa had it already when dad was a little kid in the 1920s. Unfortunately, I've moved so many times, I noticed this last time I took it out of the truck that it's starting to get a little beat up.

TPBM stays put.

25Mr.Durick
Nov 26, 2010, 12:59 am

I've been in this townhouse since early 1973 and don't want to leave. I don't, however, own the fee simple interest in the land and so may be forced out in a year or eleven years; I have no place to go.

The person below me has a fairly secure future.

26puddleshark
Nov 26, 2010, 4:16 am

Not really. But even if I won the lottery tomorrow, I would still worry. Worry seems to be my natural default state.

TPBM knows what to do with the turkey, now that it looks like it's been got at by lions.

30karenmarie
Nov 26, 2010, 11:56 am

Turkey pot pie -just turkey meat, salt, pepper, butter, turkey/chicken broth, homemade crust, baked til golden.

Husband's grandmother made it this way and I've come to like it a lot. Plus daughter LOVES it.

Wouldn't be Thanksgiving without it.

(You can do this with chicken, too)

TPBM has a different way to use left over turkey.

31SylviaC
Nov 26, 2010, 1:18 pm

Soup. With carrots, celery, onions, and rice. Nice and thick. And if there's some leftover gravy to put in, it adds a nice touch.

TPBM has worn snow boots lately.

Just entertain youself as much as possible and try the best you can to not worry about what you may be missing online. Best technique, but you must have self control.

TPBM has a very frustrating experience with the Internet once that made s/he really mad.

35SomeGuyInVirginia

Disturbed but not angry.

>>33 WholeHouseLibrary: WHL- Wow! We'll want a trip report.

TPBM has a barber/beauty shop horror story.

36sholofsky
Nov 26, 2010, 4:43 pm

A lot of them. In my youth I seemed to attract every asshole barber in LA.

TPBM believes: go bald, you won't go back (or grow back--one or the other).

37AnnaClaire
Nov 26, 2010, 11:19 pm

No. (And why not? Well, I suppose it's got something to do with being a girl.)

The person below me, despite my username, had no idea that I'm female.

38Mr.Durick
Edited: Nov 26, 2010, 11:27 pm

No, I knew you were female, but I have no idea why you don't believe that Persis Khambatta changed all that sexual presupposition about hair styling.

The person below me had their prejudices readjusted by Star Trek: the motion picture.

39SomeGuyInVirginia
Edited: Nov 26, 2010, 11:37 pm

Leaped. I really do need to take a typing course.

I don't know really. I don't remember seeing it, but as long as I didn't need to adopt any new prejudices and just got a fine turning of the ones I already hold.

I did, I peeked down your blouse when you bent over to pick up a knitting needle you'd dropped.

>>36 sholofsky: sho- 'every asshole barber'? Isn't that a sweeping generalization, an indelicate indictment of all practitioners of the coiffure's arts? I ask yourself to seek in your heart for a better understanding of your fellow persons, that you may realize that we are all equal, in the end.

TPBM needs to get home because, although he/she loves his/her family, there's a reason he/she ran away to join the circus.

40sholofsky
Edited: Nov 27, 2010, 12:26 am

Are you saying life is not a circus, Someguy? Had to join or die.

BTW #39, I said "every asshole barber in L.A." not "every barber in L.A. is an asshole." There are, unfortunately, assholes in every profession--just my poor luck to find every one in L.A. at this formative period in my life. And in the early 70's there were a lot, let me tell you. Kids, a formerly substantial part of their clientele, were all growing their hair long. Barbers were going out of business--and the ones that survived were PISSED. I would enter a shop to get my long hair cut for a job and one of these assholes would spout off "Whatta we got here, Buffalo Bill?" It was almost a question of who got to the razor first.

#38 Mr. Durick, sir, you are on the money. Hair or no hair, Persis Khambatta in STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE was definitely hot.

TPBM is thinking twice about getting a haircut.

41puddleshark
Nov 27, 2010, 1:37 am

No money for haircuts at present. And no-one in the family who can do it for free. At times like this, I wonder why we have no hairdressers, car mechanics or joiners in the family...

TPBM has a family member with a handy skill.

42SomeGuyInVirginia
Nov 27, 2010, 6:37 am

My brother knows a great deal about financial markets, and when I have a question about my computer I ask my mom who's a wiz at them.

>>39 SomeGuyInVirginia: You see, this is what I mean. Who gets up at 6:30 on a Saturday?! And I'm the last one up- the others have been up for an hour. What are we, farmers? I was adopted. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

>>40 sholofsky: sho Damn, I wasted a perfectly good pun. 'asshole barbers' - 'we're all equal in the end'. I've been trying to work that one in for about 5 days now.

TPBM is still blissfully asleep.

43sholofsky
Edited: Nov 27, 2010, 8:16 am

I was (turkey in my belly still waking me up).

#42 I see your pun and raise you. The concept was so strange to me--well, let's just say I only conceive of hemorrhoids and "equality in the end". Still, happy my rant served a purpose beyond disturbing everyone's peaceful Thanksgiving reflections.

TPBM is interested in dueling SomeGuy with puns (nether can play the banjo).

TPBM has nothing they need to do today.

45RandomActofMuse
Nov 27, 2010, 10:13 am

I wish. Gremlins got into my house while I was shopping yesterday and the place is a wreck. Got housework to do and no motivation to do it.

TPBM already has a sparkling-clean, Christmas-decorated house.

46PhaedraB
Nov 27, 2010, 11:44 am

In my dreams. I love my new roommates, but the house is unabashedly chaotic. Add to that an extra six dogs we're boarding for the holiday weekend. (There's 10-12 here normally as it is.) Imagine being trapped in a karaoke bar with "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" running on a loop. With dogs singing. All night.

TPBM has a strong opinion about karaoke.

47SomeGuyInVirginia
Edited: Nov 27, 2010, 2:00 pm

(Snort. Nice.) You know, I've never been to a karaoke bar. I used to go to a few open mic nites, and depending on the crowd that could be a lot of fun.

>>43 sholofsky: sho- You know, we are farmers. If my dad hadn't decided he liked city life better than country life, I'd be raising tobacco today.

Anyway, I accept your challenge, albeit with fear and trepidation. I can tick off five or six names of people who could easily trounce me, and an equal number of names of people who I've simply ticked off. I've also long held the suspicion that one of us is a ringer, a pro, in short- an actual working writer. (And you know who you are.) Not to mention those dread sentients who, until now (I hope) dispassionately read this thread then cut and move on without leaving a mark.

Anyway, here is a thread I started in Games: Safe Words, Ejaculations, and Persons with 'Ideas'. The point is to make up a word and supply the definition. Don't be put off by the thread name; I like provocative titles because I think they draw attention (and it's play on words), but the point of the game is not to be intentionally rude or shocking.

TPBM has something to confess to all of us.

51justjim

I've been wanting to get this off my chest for some time now. I put the "shoop" in the "shoop-di-whoop-di-whoop".

Never had mead. Couldn't tell you if I like it or not.

I don't follow football. I get more than enough updates on it because my father, uncle, and grandfather are die-hard Vikings fans, all three having been born and raised in Minnesota. Not one of them was thrilled about Favre being added to the team roster, mostly because as of late the man cannot make up his mind on whether or not he's retiring.

TPBM doesn't give a rat patootie (or any other rodent body part, for that matter) about football either.

Yeah, it's a hording mentality which is always at war with my hatred of clutter-I totally get the Hindi God Kali. I've never tried an eReader, but after posting to the Books in 2015 forum I've realized I could easily move all the genre lit (mystery, horror, sci-fi) to an eReader and most of the lit. As I've thought more about it, most of the non-fiction could go digital as well. Only thing is, no way in hell am I going to buy the same titles again. BTW, the books in 2015 is an interesting topic started by Tim; everyone should give a shout.

DeltaQueen50, I like the new arrangements of old songs by Mannheim Steamroller. They're not so new any more, though.

I love this time of year- winter, Christmas, parties. When I worked close to St. Matthew's cathedral (where JFK has his funeral) I'd go most nights for the free concerts. I've already bought lights for the balcony and ordered a wreath from LL Bean. My parents, who have been sick for years, are visiting on the 18th so I'm forgoing a tree because I'd have to disarrange my apartment to make room for it and right now it's set up 'just so'. My grandmother made everyone in the family (that she liked) a ceramic tabletop tree, but it's in storage and I can't find it. One of the reasons, probably the main one, that I've done so much to the apartment recently is because I don't want my parents worrying about me being able to take care of myself in what, they feel, is a severe and progressing national downturn. I also want my mom to say 'wow' when she walks, and dad to tell me that I've done a good job on the painting.

Sometimes I sits and thinks - sometimes I just sits (as someone, I don't know who, once said). I don't know if that counts.

Re "the darker hue", it does seem to me that most of us are a bit influenced by the imminent approach of the winter solstice. Things will look a bit brighter when the days start to lengthen. That's my thought for the day.

TPBM has tried bright lights in the winter.

194morningwalker
Dec 3, 2010, 6:54 pm

No, but by February I am not a happy camper. I think even if I tried bright lights, by then I would just be complaining about the bright lights in my eyes. I like seasonal changes, but winter is just tooooooo long. I do like after all the holidays looking forward to curling up with a good book on a snowy weekend when there is not much else to do.

TPBM has an even better idea for winter blues.

195DragonFreak
Dec 3, 2010, 7:00 pm

I have the same problem. Dark outside, light inside, NOT a good combo. What I do when I get so irritated with the brightness, I just go to sleep for thirty minutes to an hour, I get back up and I'm very cheery. Either that or I read a book while I'm resting and the same thing works.

Crimbo is an alternative term for Christmas - really the material rather than the spiritual aspects of the season, shopping, excessive consumption of food, alcohol, etc. To my surprise, the OED notes first use in 1928. I don't remember ever hearing it before the 1980s.

I'm sure in Glasgow Crimbo shopping will include buying a case of Crabbie's Green Ginger Wine - just the thing to keep out the cold as you struggle through the snow on Sauchiehall Street ;-)

TPBM thinks I'm being racist

243Sophie236

Her 42nd birthday was about 4 months later, and again, we had the same set of friends over to celebrate. I reminded her of her joke, and announced that I was going to trade her in for 3 14-year-olds.

TPBM makes verbal notes on a little voice recorder or cellphone or ipod or somesuch thing.

293WholeHouseLibrary
Dec 7, 2010, 2:33 pm

I tried that technique for a while, several years ago.
It got tedious very quickly, because I always remembered what I had recorded (possibly because of the act of recording it), and then finding that one bit of information to erase was always a hassle.

During my divorce, and for many years thereafter, any time I'd talk with my ex on the phone, I had to record it. In face-to-face meetings, I'd have a voice-activated recorder in my shirt pocket. Whenever I want to write something dark, I'll listen to a random tape for about a half hour - works every time.

As for mood-enhancing legal tricks, I say hire the meanest son of a gun and do EXACTLY as he tells you. My brother learned this the hard way during his divorce. If you think his advice is mean spirited and you don't want to appear uncool, you don't need a lawyer, you need to write a check.

No but my daughter is having an open house this evening and we'll be going to that. Then tomorrow night we are going out to dinner with friends and on Sunday out with some of my husband's brothers and sisters. Whew!

TPBM is also socializing a lot this weekend

Yes, not to do it in public.

The person below me believes that one's vanities should be public.

"Pride goeth before a fall".

TPBM is so vain s/he probably thinks this post is about him/her.

I DO NOT have an apricot scarf so it's notabout me.

Nobody does it better than TPBM.

True, very true, but I'm still trying to discover what that talent is.

TPBM knows his/her greatest talent and employs it often.

385SecondChances
Dec 10, 2010, 6:23 pm

Yes, I do. The gift of gab!

TPMB is afraid no one listens to him/her anymore.

Sometimes.

TPBM didn't know scorpions could walk up walls.

387sholofsky
Edited: Dec 10, 2010, 10:49 pm

True. I always thought they were sneaky and hid in your shoes. (Strange topic, Rose; you always seemed so, well, rosy.)

TPBM thinks scorpions are baby lobster who got stranded on the shore.

(See all the great stuff you'll be missing, Wholehouse!)

388RandomActofMuse
Dec 10, 2010, 10:52 pm

(sho - in the opening scene on a show my mom and I are watching, a scorpion went up a wall from the ground and it struck me as interesting; I had no idea that scorpions could climb such steep angles!)

#388 Really, I thought you were joshing me. Another meaning for the last line in THE THING: "Everyone, everywhere, look to the skies!"

At the risk of replying to myself, I will pass.

No, I've never thought that. I live in scorpion country and don't think much about lobsters. (Other than to feel sorry for those stuck in restaurant tanks. Very sad in my opinion.)

The person below me is enjoying the weekend so far.

So far, yes - all the snow and ice has gone, hurrah! Later I'll be in the upstairs flat painting woodwork and listening to the radio, and tonight my husband's making macaroni cheese - yummy!

TPBM is good at flower-arranging.

Actually, I am. And collecting plants, instead of an old woman with so many children, I'll have so many books and plants.

TPBM is up way too early for a Saturday. (Unless of course you reply and it's 10AM)

Had insomnia and never hit the sack--I have the very dubious honor of beating everyone on this score.

TPBM is still not up.

394SecondChances
Dec 11, 2010, 8:15 am

I will reply again. I am still not fully awake...as for being up, does that mean I'm asleep? I might be...typing in my sleep. Or not up and out of bed?
(I woke up hours too early, I don't know what's worse, can't sleep 'til late or waking up too early!)

TPBM likes their coffee very strong.

Coffee: medium. In answer to your question, Second, not sleeping at all has to be worse. (We have so many sound sleepers around us, my dear, this is turning into our own private chat room!)

TPBUs was awakened by strange voices on the thread.

Not exactly what you mean by that...

TPBM is already planning for what will be in growing in the garden (besides weeds) come Springtime.

397sholofsky
Dec 11, 2010, 3:53 pm

Not much. Roses and lillies...every year...like clockwork.

#396 'Cause we didn't wake you up...

TPBM is actually not going shopping this week-end.

398SylviaC
Dec 11, 2010, 4:41 pm

Too late, I already did! I generally avoid shopping on weekends, especially at this time of year, but we are between two storm systems so I had to go while I could.

TPBM has a snowman in their yard.

SRedRose, my daughter was sitting on the edge of the tub one evening helping her little daughter dry off after a bath, and she looked up to see a scorpion walking down the shower curtain right toward her head. I shook a scorpion out of my sleeping bag one morning while on a camping trip. I guess it just climbed in to get warm, because it didn't sting me.

I had a snowman in my yard several years ago.

TPBM feels very sorry for those who already have several feet of snow in their yards and towns.

I don't know that I would say I feel sorry for them, but I certainly am very grateful that I haven't several feet of snow in my OWN yard and town.

The person below me is always grateful to be left alone for a stretch of a few hours.

I am. I love quiet.

TPBM would rather spend a week-end socializing than alone.

402sholofsky
Dec 11, 2010, 5:36 pm

Only with the wife.

TPBM has constructed an anatomically correct snowman.

403RandomActofMuse
Dec 11, 2010, 9:09 pm

I don't recall having ever built a snowman, anatomically correct or not. I suppose it's possible I did as a toddler, but we moved from a snowy state to Florida when I was three. I visited family up there over Christmas when I was 15, but the snow was too dry to stick and make even a decent snowball, let alone a whole snowman. Kidlet got to help with a snowman last Christmas when he went up with my mom and sisters for Christmas; I had to stay home for work.

TPBM knows someone named Fred.

404WholeHouseLibrary
Dec 11, 2010, 9:13 pm

Three, actually.
My high school Algebra teacher, and 2 guys I went to college with.

TPBM knows some (personally) who has 6 toes on one foot.

405thebeadden
Dec 11, 2010, 9:20 pm

No. I did baby sit 3 siblings, 2 of which had 6 webbed toes on both their feet. If I recall, the older boy had his extra toes removed, his twin brother was born with the usual 5. The toddler had all 6 toes (At the time)

TPBM has moved more than three times in their adult life.

406Boobalack
Dec 11, 2010, 9:57 pm

Yes. I hate moving and hope to never need to again.

TPBM likes making new friends.

407Mr.Durick

I don't do friendship competently, so I gave up on it. There are people I treat more intimately than strangers, however.

The person below me has tapped a keg of beer.

Share it with me, Mr. Durick, and I'm sure we'll end up friends. Particularly if the topic of conversation is Persis Khambatta (but we can talk about religion, too).

TPBM also appreciates Persis Khambatta--or, at least, beer.

409RandomActofMuse
Dec 12, 2010, 1:06 am

She's pretty, but I'm not familiar with her work. And I find beer icky.

TPBM knows better than to be up at oh-dark-thirty, but is awake anyway (and playing around on LT, at that!)

Looks like it's only you and me, Rose--though in L.A. it's only just after ten.

TPBM thinks we need scorpions to make this picture complete.

No, I think we need a new thread to make this picture complete.
