Lily Dale: Believing by Wendy Corsi Staub

The second book in the Lily Dale series, this one can be read independent of the first.

Using the backdrop of Lily Dale, a town 60 miles south of Buffalo, NY and is possibly the largest Spiritualist community in the United States, the author follows the saga of 17 year old Calla who recently discovered her psychic ability.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lily_Dale

Temporarily living with her maternal grandmother in Lily Dale, Calla becomes more convinced that her mother was murdered. This, added to the fact that Calla is able to help track a serial killer preying on young girls, lends to a very interesting story.

While not riveting or challenging, it is the type of book I need right now...nothing in depth, but fun.
The book contains suspense, a bit of romance and a tale of family ties that bind both here on earth and on the next plain.

Hi Linda! I find it strange to think of Lily Dale as a place - to me she is a character, the heroine of one of Trollope's Barsetshire Chronicles: The Little House at Allington (touchstones not loading). So I have done a double-take when you've mentioned the Lily Dale series. Anyway, I'm glad this was the right kind of book for you just now.

I am posting for Linda: She was taken to the hospital Thursday afternoon because her heart was doing the tachycardia thing again - luckily, she was at her cardiologists office and they took her to the local hospital. She will be undergoing a procedure Friday and if necessary, a shunt will be placed in her heart. Will is supposed to touch base with me tomorrow to let me know how she is doing. When I know anything, I will post here.

Linda Update: I just got off the phone with Will. Linda had another tachycardia episode this afternoon. Luckily, both of her cardiologists were at the hospital when it happened and they got the heartbeat under control fairly rapidly, but Linda is feeling pretty rotten at the moment and will not be able to go home today. The earliest it will be at this juncture is tomorrow and possibly not until Monday. The doctors are going to do the ablation on Thursday.

I spoke with Linda tonight. She sounds tired (only to be expected, she is in the hospital, places in which you are not allowed to sleep, I think), but in good spirits. She told me that she knows God is not done with her yet because He made sure that both of her cardiologists were at the hospital today when her tachycardia attack occurred. Not only that, but one of the cardiologists had a cancellation this coming Thursday, which meant that rather than the ablation coming several weeks down the line, it could happen this week.

I am glad to know God is not done with her yet because I need her around :)

I'm home from the hospital and it is good to be here. I'm very tired and headachy from the procedures and the beta blockers, but I'm feeling very fortunate!

I was allowed home because I live five minutes from the hospital and was told that if another episode occurs before the surgery, I need to get to the hospital asap and then will have to stay there until the surgery on Thursday.

Words fail me; a simple thanks for all the prayers, concern and words of affection somehow just doesn't express my feelings of gratitude. Big thanks to Stasia who is indeed the heart and hub of us all.

I'm blessed in many ways.

This is such a healing, wonderful, supportive group and I am ever blessed to know you all.

What are the amazing odds that I would be in the cardiologist office at the height of the tachycardia episode. A pulse of 180 is a scary event. It took two shots of adeniicine to get my pulse under control.

What are the incredible odds that both cardiologists were making rounds when I was in the hospital experiencing another episode when once again it took two infusions to get the pulse down to 90?

What are the odds that the surgeon had a cancellation five minutes before my latest episode and thus could schedule me for ablation surgery this coming Thursday?

Thanks again everyone. I'm pretty emotional at this minute after reading all the messages and then trying to comprehend the beauty and awesomeness of this thing we call friendship, love and life!

Thanks again everyone for your kind, sincere out reach.

I was able to finish three books while I was in the hospital, they are:

Life With A Star by Jiri Weil

Highly recommended by Stasia and Peggy (LizzieD), this is an incredible book and one of the most haunting tales of the brutal Nazi terror and unrelenting evil.

I'm referencing Peggy's excellent review here

highly recommended
----------------

Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly

An excellent recommendation by Mark. This is what historical fiction is meant to be. Using actual details, the book lures the reader into wanting to learn more about the French Revolution.

Andi is filled with sadness and anti-depressants. Her family is split apart and reeling from the death of Andi's brother.

Andi's father is a famous geneticist who is hired to uncover the truth in the DNA of a heart found believed to be that of Louis-Charles, the doomed son of Maria Antoinette.

Deftly weaving the modern day life of Andi and the French Revolution, the author does a stellar job of holding the readers attention the entire 496 pages of a clever story, excellently written and marvelously told.

Highly recommended.
--------------------------

My Reading Life by Pat Conroy
I first learned of this book on Tina's (tututhefirst) thread and then again from Stasia.

You might want to reference both Tina and Mary's (bell7) excellent reviews for a more indepth analysis.

Tina, Stasia and Mary were right! It is a wonderful book, one to be relished for the beauty and the power of words. A book about books, Pat Conroy writes not only of the major works that have impacted on his life, but also the people who lead him to a life of learning.

Highly recommended.

Adding Life with a Star to my wishlist - sounds life a worthwhile read.

Reading through all of the beautiful and caring well-wishes on your thread, I'm reminded of one of Charlie's favorite cartoons, in which Kipper the dog makes a Get Well card for his friend. He writes on the card: "Get well now", because he doesn't want his friend to get well soon, he wants him to be better now! That's what I'm wishing for you - get well NOW, or at least as very soon as possible. :)

Linda - I'm so glad you are home from the hospital and glad that you are going back to the hospital Thursday for your ablation. It also looks like you got some good reading done while experiencing the blessing of having your cardiologists around just when you needed them.

Praying for health and wisdom and patience through all of this.

Hi Linda, I hope you're keeping well this week and that your spirits are up. Good books sure help. I was reading My Reading Life and was about three quarters in when I discovered it on audio at the library. Read by Pat Conroy. I couldn't resist and so I checked it out and started again from disc 1. It's a wonderful book and I love having Conroy himself read it to me.

Linda Update: I just got off the phone with Linda about 5 minutes ago. She is doing very well. The doctors are confident that the problem causing her tachycardia is now resolved. Woot! I do not need to tell you how much she was scaring ME :) Anyway, she should be released from the hospital either late this afternoon or early this evening.

Home from the hospital a few minutes ago. It worked! The heart ablation worked. It was a 3.5 hour surgery with no complications. The surgeon saw Will right after the surgery and told him he is 90-95% sure he was able to repair what was wrong.

Thanks again to all, with a special hug to Stasia for her communication.

Now, I am hoping that the next thread I start does not contain ANY messages regarding health issues.

The Runaway Dolls by Ann M. Martin

I enjoyed the other The Doll People and The Meanest Doll In The World. They were creative, silly and there were laugh-out-loud passages. Alas, this third installment was a huge disappointment, and not worthy of time spent on a review.

I continued reading the book because Brian Selznick is an incredible illustrator and his handiwork is sheer creative genius.

NOT recommended

Thanks again to all who sent such lovely, kind messages. Tomorrow I'll start a new thread and it is my hope that the health issues are behind me and I can begin with an emphasis on books rather than neck fusion surgery and heart problems.
