I am a huge Terry Pratchett fan and have been told to try reading Tom Holt but was wondering what is his first book and is it best to read them in order? Thanks

Expecting Someone Taller was the first its a good start i think. Holt has done series stuff but most of his books are stand alone. I have heard that he tends to be inconsistent.
I suggest you also look at books by Jasper Fforde, his first was The Eyre Affair
and of course there is also Douglas Adams.

What Simon said. I've read Blonde Bombshell and The better Mousetrap, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. Had Falling Sideways out of the library but couldn't get beyond the end of chapter 3 (maybe 1/8 of the way in), so returned it yesterday.

Thanks so much Simon and hfglen. I have read all Jasper Fforde's books and awaiting the new one just released and tried Douglas Adams but couldn't get into them. I will search out the Tom Holt ones you have suggested. Thanks again :)

He's only done one series and 5 books based on ancient greece, my Favourites have been Nothing but Blue Skies and Here Comes the Sun.

I enjoyed The Portable Door but couldn't get into the other books in that particular sequence or his other books very much, though bits of them are very funny and fiendishly clever. I rather suspect he's an acquired taste...and I also think he lacks the...I don't know-- compassion for humanity that Pratchett brings to his books.

I don't think you have to read any Tom Holt's in order as they don't really have recurring characters in them in the way that TP's discworld does.
I liked Flying Dutch, Who's Afraid of Beowulf and Grailblazers best.
He's also done a fantastic short novella called Someone Like Me that isn't part of his comic novel collection but is fantastically creepy.
