I have read on nook:
81. Area 51 by Bob Mayer
Good fun adventure read. WE have Area 51, Atlantis, Giza, and Mars...
and other fun places with myth, legend and fact all blended to make a
good read. It inspired me to pick up #2 in the series..
82. Area 51 : The Reply by Bob Mayer
So far so good as well. Neither of these are girlie reads by any means..
but I do think there are plenty of women here who might enjoy them..
I also have the next one in the series all lined up and ready to go..

I always do grocery shopping in the morning...today, at 9...the place was practically deserted and the produce wasn't all picked-over....YAY!...and they even had Bok Choy.....Peaches, too....
My "porch" is just the patio outside the back door...open on three sides so get a pretty good breeze....and the debris that comes with....on hot days the bees and bugs congregate and I don't have a bug repeller......so "porching" is good only during cool spells...

Appalachian Justice 4.64 · rating details · 22 ratings · 12 reviews
Deep in the mountains of Appalachia, Billy May Platte learned the hard way that 1940s West Virginia was no place to be gay. 'We was sheltered in them hills. 'We was sheltered in them hills. We didn't know much of nothin' about life outside of them mountains. I did not know the word lesbian; to us, gay meant havin' fun and queer meant somethin' strange.' In 1945, when Billy May was fourteen years old and alone, three local boys witnessed an incident in which Billy May's sexuality was called into question. Determined to teach her a lesson she would never forget, they orchestrated a brutal attack that changed the dynamics of the tiny coal mining village of Cedar Hollow, West Virginia forever. Thirty years after the brutal attack, living in solitude on top of Crutcher Mountain, Billy May discovers the hideout of a young girl - a girl who just happens to be the daughter of one of the boys who attacked Billy May so long ago. No one knows better than Billy May the telltale signs of abuse, and she must quickly make a decision. Will she withdraw into the solitude in which she has lived since the horrific attack, or will she risk everything to save the girl from a similar fate? In spite of the heartbreaking incidents that take place in the novel, the book is ultimately a tribute to the resiliency of the human spirit and a celebration of the beauty of second chances. Underneath it all, Appalachian Justice is also a powerful love story, though certainly not a conventional one.

Have been so caught up in summer company, activities, work and fun - haven't thought much past this afternoon - except I want hamburgers & hot dogs BBQ! Can't remember last time we had that.
So, I'm making baked beans and/or potato salad to go with... Mom likes one - Ron the other. Pasta salad for me... plus cole slaw, watermelon, & lemon cake. Simple fare - looks like nice weather ahead.
Blessing of the Fleet... Our funny little Parade... lobster supper on the wharf for the Fourth...
Hope to slip in a fair amount of reading in the shade... need to rest up for next weekend's Fire Auction. Big doings there. Come on up! :)

I am enjoying the thought of a weekend of relative solitude and peace and quiet. I love being a part of my niece's family, but there are times when I've had "enough, for now, thank you"; and, this is one of those! Drinking my latte this morning, I am contemplating doing nothing planned, just whatever the spirit moves me to do.

Impressionism is a movement in French painting, sometimes called optical realism because of its almost scientific interest in the actual visual experience and effect of light and movement on appearance of objects. Impressionist paintings are balanced, use colored shadows, use pure color, broken brushstrokes, thick paint, and scenes from everyday life or nature.
People that like Impressionist paintings may not alway be what is deemed socially acceptable. They tend to move on their own path without always worrying that it may be offensive to others. They value friendships but because they also value honesty tend to have a few really good friends. They do not, however, like people that are rude and do not appreciate the ideas of others. They are secure enough in themselves that they can listen to the ideas of other people without it affecting their own final decisions. The world for them is not black and white but more in shades of grey and muted colors. They like things to be aestically pleasing, not stark and sharp. There are many ways to view things, and the impresssionist personality views the world from many different aspects. They enjoy life and try to keep a realistic viewpoint of things, but are not very open to new experiences. If they are content in their live they will be more than likely pleased to keep things just the way they are.

shoot them off. A house in Pgh burned last night, due to fireworks. I just got back in from cruising the yeard to pull weeds and pick up firework debris. My neighbor had the new roof of her convertable
damaged. People carefully shoot them away from their own homes, but that doesn't help those of us who have to deal with the aftermath in our yards and possessions. Margie also had a canopy for her deck damaged a couple of years ago..holes burned through. I live in town.. if you want to shoot off fireworks here.. you should shoot them at your own home, not mine. Me, too. Innocent, that is. I expect more noise tonight. I do live in a dense little housing development surrounded by semi-rural zoning. I am sure both in my neighborhood and around it will be plenty of folks who think it is clean, innocent fun, that they deserve for being relatively good all year, not remembering how much it terrifies pets, and occasionally burns down houses.

There are many things I don't understand..
However, from something I saw on the news for the 4 seconds that
they were not talking about Casey Anthony...
the tax on fireworks is very high and now, even states where they may
not be sold, may begin selling them for the revenue. Then. they will presumably
make it illegal to shoot them off.
mmmmCherry pie~!
Nearly finished with Cahokia....

roni, we did some of that too! I still love snakes :)
they're like magic.
I used to buy sparklers long after the kids left home :)
We have also had fountains.. things that didn't shoot into the air..
One time .. centuries ago.. we bought fountains and Dan bought a round red ball. He lit it
and it jumped into the air and rolled down the hill... right into the neighbors yard.
They were in it. It cured me. I was about 5 at the time, and ... after that, it was a few sparklers.
However, Cory once had a GF visit from Japan, and she hid fireworks in her bags.. and
they set them off. However, it was Jan 1. and we aimed them from the front of our yard to the back,
so that there was no debris or danger to the neighbors...whom we invited here to watch.
Full disclosure.

I am interested in the story...it started sounding a little familiar
at one part, and then Selu was mentioned and I knew why..
I am also interested in the ( very few) references to the Maya.
I do not like the way this man writes. He sounds judgmental and superior to me.
Like Mr Yuppie archaeologist who knows what happened during a time he was yet to be born.
His descriptions sound contrived. I would have left it many pages ago, if I didn't want to
hear the story.

Kath, unlike you, I detest these critters....

It is a pellet and you light it and it grows to startling dimensions..
way fun.
And it is true. I do enjoy real snakes, for the most part ... lol

Hope the dreaded book funk stays away.
Sorry about the pets' nerves with the firecrackers. Most folks right where I live are pretty responsible, but I've had debris to pick up several times. We're in the back of beyond, so not much police coverage or anything like that. We just muddle on; dh keeps the hoses ready as he has always been deathly afraid of fire in the house.
How about some angel cake, sliced very ripe strawberries, real whipped cream veryslightly sweetened? Let it all set in nice dessert glasses so the berry juice soaks into the cake. Yum and quite light.

Gail... all is well.. Once again, last night wasn't as bad as it has been in the past.
I haven't checked the yard yet, but when I went to see where it was coming from,
it was pretty clear that I will have something to clean up. I fear the same with fire..
mostly, being able to find and save my furkids. :P
And I love angel food cake, but I like it just plain and yummy the best..
:)

Ron was out half the night on calls. Neither of us got much sleep.
Car-vs-deer - pretty ugly for deer and car :( Humans ok.
followed by
11 yr old losing an eye - fireworks misfired... long painful trip to Portland's hosp
Ron drove ambulance in fog alert for deer after just seeing the mess of 1st call.
They are trained to hit any deer in the way - something he is hoping never happens.
Prayed for all emergency personnel while I waited to hear him come home.
Now that summer has officially begun, I work towards and hope for winter and peace.
Trying to decide if I want to request an ER book. I have too many of my own books I want to read.
Might skip it again... I love free books... but I have my limits (sorry to admit).
Any plans for today? Gonna get Dan to bring in propane tank for refill?
Lunch out in a nice a/c restaurant?

good information, the sort of thing that I used to read a lot. Much of what I read is Mayan history, and
This had that flavor to it.
At the end of the day, I will be giving it 4 stars for content. I might have given it more,
if there weren't so many irritating ( to me ) passages.
84. Cahokia 4 stars
A very informative book about an intriguing period of history, and more about a culture
The Mississippians than I ever thought to find. A reminder that we can look in our own backyard for fascinating and informative history.

Whatever..
I fixed the stove burner myself ..by having a go at it with a brush..
so that is done.
Dan doesn't like to eat out, and often gets angry if I suggest it. So, I doubt that is in my future.
Same old same old.
Sorry to hear about the injuries last night :(
Latest info, Cory will be home on friday, to continue his job hunt, as he decided not to take the one in StL.

Good job! Figured you would!

I will consider it a successful day if the trellis thingy gets hung on the side of the porch.
Hot dogs in the oven for dinner, or maybe for lunch .. dunno.
Such is my life. Gotta go back to it.

Already time to close up the house and turn on the AC. Although, it looks like a good chance of t-storms this afternoon, so maybe it won't be so hot.
226mckait
Agree rd and Jenn ... time to shut the house and start the cooling.. just the fan for now.
I can eat when it's hot.. just .. different things.
If someone set a plate full of bacon in front of me, I could have no trouble eating it,
were it 100F. Sadly.
I had watermelon for breakfast
Blasted jac has me craving bacon tho..
Okay my next read which I was going to read befor Cahokia is going to be Rollins
The Devil Colony. A bit of synchronicity with my last read, is that it opens at a dig at an
Indian Mound, and then by page 36, the Native American museum is mentioned
( and I was just there.) It promises to be another rousing and thrilling Rollins..
It is a Vine book.

Hot is the order of the day.....chef salad for lunch...leftover whatever for dinner...too hot to "porch" until this evening..
I try to walk down my hill, to the State route (and back up, of course) a couple times a week...unless it's too hot! there's no one around to pick me up if i collapse...
Bacon? I avoided the urge this morning...and am now regretting it...

I just had the worse BLT ever for lunch today.
Nice restaurant, too many tourists, waited about an hour for:
very small slices of skinny, wimpy bread, 1 lettuce leaf, 1 slice of tomato
and about 4 pieces of limp, fatty disgusting ?bacon? $8.00
Never again at that place. :P
Mid 80s, no humidity, blue skies. I'm supposing many were happy.
tolerable.
Not hungry for anything. But I had greek yogurt w/pineapple for supper.
good enough.
Bleh day... they can't all be exciting. :}

Greta has recovered from her very bad 4th of July afternoon/evening. Those idiots started with the noisy firecrackers, etc. about 2 pm and did not stop until midnight, nonstop noise! They even burned a hole in a neighbor's house! Thank god, vinyl siding does not burn so easily.
Greta really thought she could dig through the floor to a quiet, dark hole in the ground. If she'd found one, I would have joined her, I am sure.

All my dogs used to be traumatized by the 4th. and thunderstorms. Once Ben (our second) wouldn't come back in the house after his evening romp. Finally, when we couldn't find him, we went to bed. Next morning, after a particularly fierce thunderstorm, we found him shivering under the shrubs. Poor guy.

There are three Primanti Brothers stores in Florida, listed amongst the ones in Pittsburgh (and still none in Philly???). I'd like to keep my streak of not visiting Florida intact, so I'll have to make a trip to see some old faces at Pitt, and go to the Primanti's in Oakland.

Are you running the risk of having The Thread Police come get you for having more than 250 posts in your thread? What is that about, anyway? I never have understood. And while I'm asking personal questions...what hill? early morning jogging?
