The porch pic is actually a couple of years old.. the morning glories are not quite to that speed yet..
and I have new cushions.. new pic soon..

Glad to see all of you here.. hope to see you all again soon..

I have read on nook:
81. Area 51 by Bob Mayer
Good fun adventure read. WE have Area 51, Atlantis, Giza, and Mars...
and other fun places with myth, legend and fact all blended to make a
good read. It inspired me to pick up #2 in the series..

82. Area 51 : The Reply by Bob Mayer
So far so good as well. Neither of these are girlie reads by any means..
but I do think there are plenty of women here who might enjoy them..
I also have the next one in the series all lined up and ready to go..
it may well be

83? Area 51 : The Mission.

I am reading ,cooking, and doing some laundry..
plenty of post visit chores to do..

What a cozy looking porch ...can I bring my beanbag too? I'm a sprawling lounger and have the backbone of a jellyfish when I read ... I just can't sit upright to read ...unless I'm at work, but even at work after a while, I start sliding down my chair. The only way anyone knows I'm at my desk is if they see my feet under my desk because once I start sliding down, my monitor hides the rest of me.

Mornin' Kath!
So nice to have you back...

Hope your headache stays away. Mine has disappeared and good riddance!
I needed sleep and finally got some. :)

Hopefully today we will venture over to Boothbay'a botanical gardens. Looks like a pretty day ahead.

Ha! I have to laugh at the combo I am currently reading:
Thousand Autumns of Jacob DeZoet and The Trumpet of the Swan lol

What are YOU doing today? Whatever you decide, have a good day! :)

My porch is a bleak, plain canvas compared to yours! Too much wind and rain around here to make it pretty. All I need is a place to sit... that I got!

43Matke
Jun 28, 2011, 9:15 am

34: A kindred soul...you've described the perfect Porch Experience.

Kathleen, how do, dear? Hope your headache is gone for good. Right now I'm reading L is for Lawless, as I have no brain at the moment and can't handle anything heavier. Wish my porch was more open, but it's enclosed on three sides :/. Still, it provides fresh (sorta) air and a view of the trees and birds.

44richardderus
Jun 28, 2011, 9:26 am

I suppose mentioning our tree-shaded brick patio, accompanied by the four-season jalousy-windowed sunporch, all equipped with comfy chairs and a fountain, would be considered anti-social.

48ronincats
Jun 28, 2011, 11:56 am

I spent a lot of yesterday out on the deck--temps were in the mid 70s so it was very nice. Did a bit of gardening too. Today is supposed to be just as nice before it cools down and gets cloudy tomorrow, so I may be out there again. The porch (for which I got new chairs that are PERFECT last month--pull out footstools from under them) faces the east and is great for reading the morning newspaper with coffee. The deck is on the west and is great for late morning through the afternoon except when it does get really hot, when the front porch then becomes the cool spot in the late afternoon. So far this morning, I've cleaned the kitchen, had coffee, and come in to read threads. I have to choose my 75th book to start today--I don't know what I want to read!

Agree with you completely there.. I try to have my errands done by 10. Go somewhere else first..

58Ape
Jun 29, 2011, 9:26 am

It's nice going grocery shopping without having to elbow people out of the way, and not having to wait in line at a gas station. I went to Wal-Mart a few days ago (nowhere else to shop in my tiny town) and it was so nice to pretty much be the ONLY person in the whole store. Early morning shopping is wonderful.

Groceries are still too damn expensive, even with a bit more cash in my pocket. Milk is a luxury. Yay for a mom who cooks too much on purpose just so she can send over leftovers.

59Carmenere
Jun 29, 2011, 9:49 am

Back from the walk. Discovered I'm a grandmother. The crazy bird that's been flitting in and out of my hanging geranium was actually feeding her birdlings.

I've been a morning person since I was a kid, about 6ish, and I'd play matchbox cars in the flowerbeds with my two best friends, David and Leslie.

60-Cee-
Jun 29, 2011, 10:08 am

Hi you crazy mornng people! One time I went to the grocery store before 9am - what a shock! The shelves were fully stocked and neat! I found everything I wanted. I was in and out in a flash! Nice treat - but probably won't happen again for some time... :P:)

Gotta think about how I can make my porch appealing and cozy. Maybe I will submit a "before" picture and all you creative types can give me some ideas.

Congrats gramma Lynda! Makes it a little tough to water your plant with a young family in there, I imagine. I had that problem/blessing once. It was so interesting to watch them grow, peep, fledge and take off! :)

61richardderus
Jun 29, 2011, 11:10 am

Who do I blame? My mac battery was not holding a charge. I called and was told they would prob just replace, not send out. Well due to this and that...out it went. Two or three weeks. I will be here minimally. I am on nook, hard to type a lot.

Boo Hiss on the Mac battery!!

I hate doing the Web thing on my Kindle...too slow and if I don't hit the tiny keys...just right...i tend to go all over the place...

I always do grocery shopping in the morning...today, at 9...the place was practically deserted and the produce wasn't all picked-over....YAY!...and they even had Bok Choy.....Peaches, too....

My "porch" is just the patio outside the back door...open on three sides so get a pretty good breeze....and the debris that comes with....on hot days the bees and bugs congregate and I don't have a bug repeller......so "porching" is good only during cool spells...

I am still stunned that I am laptop free with no warning!

72mckait
Jun 29, 2011, 9:38 pm

nope. not a mac problem, honest! My laptop is three years old, and the battery was not holding a good charge.. so, since it was still under warranty, I took it in to get a new battery. There are a few cosmetic things, and the lid/screen is lightly off center. The geek squad girl convinced me to send it out to try to get it all fixed as it is supposedly all under the about to be expired warranty. She did convince me.
so Off it went. The screen being off kilter was a worry since it is about to go off of warranty. It will go out in the mail, like Cee's did.. so cross things please do not blame poor mac. I just wanted to take advantage of the last days of my warranty .and I took it last year , too.

88Ape
Jun 30, 2011, 1:23 pm

Roni: But I rarely have trouble with Windows (I should note I refuse to upgrade from the ever-so-perfect XP) and on the off-chance that I do, I am capable of fixing it because Windows allows me to fiddle with my computer without breaking or telling me I'm not allowed. Macs are...painful, to deal with. At least, that is my (limited) experience. :(

89mckait
Jun 30, 2011, 1:37 pm

Macs need no fiddling. They do everything without you...
The amount of time I have spent on my husbands and my sisters old laptops.. disc cleaning and
defragging, not to mention removing programs ( which took for freaking ever with some of them)
Well.. I have been hard at it since 6 am today. I am just finishing with the defragging.. which I did not do sequentially, but basically at the same time. It has been a nightmare. Now at least the toshiba is working fairly well.. at the minute.

So I am not struggling with nook.. which does the ob admirably, but I find that the
typing with no keyboard a bit slow.

Good Morning, Kath!
Have already been up for an hour and what a beauteous cool sunny morning!
Went out for pizza and grocery shopping last night. ;-)
Went to bed earlier than usual - unable to read - after being sabotaged by a glass of cabernet.

Today we will be boating with friends - not sure where we will be going yet.
Not sure I want to go, but today is my day to have some fun -
so maybe this will work?

So, what are you doing today? :)

95mckait

Boating? envy! I was up early too.. did the floors and made stuffed peppers to put into the crock pot for tomorrow.. No picnic here, or boats either :P

Appalachian Justice by Melinda Clayton (Goodreads Author)
Appalachian Justice 4.64 · rating details · 22 ratings · 12 reviews
Deep in the mountains of Appalachia, Billy May Platte learned the hard way that 1940s West Virginia was no place to be gay. 'We was sheltered in them hills. 'We was sheltered in them hills. We didn't know much of nothin' about life outside of them mountains. I did not know the word lesbian; to us, gay meant havin' fun and queer meant somethin' strange.' In 1945, when Billy May was fourteen years old and alone, three local boys witnessed an incident in which Billy May's sexuality was called into question. Determined to teach her a lesson she would never forget, they orchestrated a brutal attack that changed the dynamics of the tiny coal mining village of Cedar Hollow, West Virginia forever. Thirty years after the brutal attack, living in solitude on top of Crutcher Mountain, Billy May discovers the hideout of a young girl - a girl who just happens to be the daughter of one of the boys who attacked Billy May so long ago. No one knows better than Billy May the telltale signs of abuse, and she must quickly make a decision. Will she withdraw into the solitude in which she has lived since the horrific attack, or will she risk everything to save the girl from a similar fate? In spite of the heartbreaking incidents that take place in the novel, the book is ultimately a tribute to the resiliency of the human spirit and a celebration of the beauty of second chances. Underneath it all, Appalachian Justice is also a powerful love story, though certainly not a conventional one.

Have been so caught up in summer company, activities, work and fun - haven't thought much past this afternoon - except I want hamburgers & hot dogs BBQ! Can't remember last time we had that.
So, I'm making baked beans and/or potato salad to go with... Mom likes one - Ron the other. Pasta salad for me... plus cole slaw, watermelon, & lemon cake. Simple fare - looks like nice weather ahead.
Blessing of the Fleet... Our funny little Parade... lobster supper on the wharf for the Fourth...
Hope to slip in a fair amount of reading in the shade... need to rest up for next weekend's Fire Auction. Big doings there. Come on up! :)

Good morning, Kath. I agree the Billy May book looks very interesting.

I am enjoying the thought of a weekend of relative solitude and peace and quiet. I love being a part of my niece's family, but there are times when I've had "enough, for now, thank you"; and, this is one of those! Drinking my latte this morning, I am contemplating doing nothing planned, just whatever the spirit moves me to do.

Balanced, Secure, and Realistic.

21 Impressionist, 11 Islamic, 4 Ukiyo-e, -28 Cubist, -21 Abstract and 5 Renaissance!

Impressionism is a movement in French painting, sometimes called optical realism because of its almost scientific interest in the actual visual experience and effect of light and movement on appearance of objects. Impressionist paintings are balanced, use colored shadows, use pure color, broken brushstrokes, thick paint, and scenes from everyday life or nature.

People that like Impressionist paintings may not alway be what is deemed socially acceptable. They tend to move on their own path without always worrying that it may be offensive to others. They value friendships but because they also value honesty tend to have a few really good friends. They do not, however, like people that are rude and do not appreciate the ideas of others. They are secure enough in themselves that they can listen to the ideas of other people without it affecting their own final decisions. The world for them is not black and white but more in shades of grey and muted colors. They like things to be aestically pleasing, not stark and sharp. There are many ways to view things, and the impresssionist personality views the world from many different aspects. They enjoy life and try to keep a realistic viewpoint of things, but are not very open to new experiences. If they are content in their live they will be more than likely pleased to keep things just the way they are.

oh, I've missed a whole pile of posts. Seems they are mostly about porches (which I don't have) and food (which I have had too much of recently). Jim and I are in Portland, and I'm typing away on my little netbook, feeling oh so connected.

Tomorrow we are going to the Columbia River Gorge area with my ever-so-kind-to-tourists cousin Bonnie. We've already done the Powell's pilgrimage with Berly (Kim) - we should have sprung for shipping - now we'll have to tote all those new books home on the 4th.

Good morning everyone!

yep, it is the 4th. Several neighbors started celebrating early
It was a loud night. There were no silent ones, like Cee's.

Terri, maybe it is something in the Pa air?
I will try again today. Dan is going to work, so
maybe an empty house will help.

rd, when we went south to get married, when I was 18 and ran away
to Eden NC, the woman wouldn't sell me flowers because she said she doesn't sell flowers
to yankees. so? I mentioned it at the hotel in FL later that day and he had a vase of
flowers sent to the room.

Thank you Linda... I will continue to post photos for a while...not always of the group.. we shall see what strikes my fancy.

Lynda :) I missed you! Glad you had a chance to go off and have some fun.

Some of our neighbors celebrated with fireworks for the last 2 nights, so no early or quiet night for me either, Kath. Still, I am looking forward to the 'real' fireworks display over Boston tonight.

Fireworks here, Friday, Saturday Sunday nights.....very loud...beginning at around 10pm until ????....tonight will probably be a doozy. I usually hike to the top of the big hill, to watch the town's display (for free) but not this year...too hot and buggy...the noise was enough!

Don't know what I'm going to do today...have food cooked...need a shampoo.....grass needs cut....books to be read......my Lazy Gene is kicking in, though..

Have a good one, kiddo!!!

I just came back fro my walk. The entire sidewalk of the house next to my niece's house.. is absolutely covered with fireworks litter. Oliver is afraid of the noise from the, so I am guessing they had a time of it last night. That must be where the most of them came from last night. Hard to tell sometimes..
more ahead, I think...

I'm an inconsiderate bastard on 4th of July, sorry to say! We were lighting them off until 11:30 last night. They were very non-quiet. :(

I figure I'm allowed, since I stay quiet and keep to myself the rest of the year.

In Pa it is legal to sell fireworks.. I think it is also legal to buy them. it is not legal to
shoot them off. A house in Pgh burned last night, due to fireworks. I just got back in from cruising the yeard to pull weeds and pick up firework debris. My neighbor had the new roof of her convertable
damaged. People carefully shoot them away from their own homes, but that doesn't help those of us who have to deal with the aftermath in our yards and possessions. Margie also had a canopy for her deck damaged a couple of years ago..holes burned through. I live in town.. if you want to shoot off fireworks here.. you should shoot them at your own home, not mine. Just sayin'

195Ape
Jul 4, 2011, 9:32 am

It's not legal to sell/buy but illegal to set them off here too... *Shrug* Like I said, inconsiderate bastard. It's okay though, the property here is pretty huge so at least they don't have to worry about debris.

Morning Kath- We never heard anything last night, since we were attending the wedding and then it was very late when we got home and the neighborhood was sleeping. Tonight will be another story. Hopefully they will be done with their racket by 10 or so. People have to work tomorrow.
Hope you are not sliding into the dreaded "funk". Fingers crossed.

I live in a semi-rural township and people seem to enjoy re-enacting the Civil War. Gunshots echoing thru the neighborhood is not a pleasant thing when you're trying to enjoy the evening outdoors.

198mckait
Jul 4, 2011, 9:34 am

That is different.. if the mess and consequences land in your own yard..
fine. At least this year, this is the first morning I have had to go out to clear my
yard. Sometimes it goes on for weeks.

199jdthloue
Jul 4, 2011, 10:13 am

It's legal to buy and sell fireworks in Ohio...there's a place, further east on SR78 that does a "booming" business every year....but it's illegal to set them off......a couple of years ago some houses in town suffered heavy damage due to fireworks/ignorant people.....

Out in the country, where I live.....i guess anything goes...as long as you don't catch the woods on fire.

Fireworks, "in town"...perish that thought, indeed!

The Fourth and New Year's are the peak firework times. I just don't listen, and the debris isn't onerous because we don't have a lot of goofy kids on the block. Cool to watch the Macy's show on our new big TV, though!

It was only a little noisy here and poor Greta Garbo only spent a few minutes, before I feel asleep, digging in the carpet under my bed. I do feel sorry for her. I am sure she thinks the world, as she knows it, is coming to an absolute bloody end. Lucky Nicky is deaf to it all, and sleeps the sleep of the innocent.

Me, too. Innocent, that is. I expect more noise tonight. I do live in a dense little housing development surrounded by semi-rural zoning. I am sure both in my neighborhood and around it will be plenty of folks who think it is clean, innocent fun, that they deserve for being relatively good all year, not remembering how much it terrifies pets, and occasionally burns down houses.

oh, well, if there weren't things "outside" to bitch about, I'd have to complain about what's inside. Back to my read a thon.... almost finished with A Feast for Crows.

205mckait

I don't get it either...
There are many things I don't understand..
However, from something I saw on the news for the 4 seconds that
they were not talking about Casey Anthony...
the tax on fireworks is very high and now, even states where they may
not be sold, may begin selling them for the revenue. Then. they will presumably
make it illegal to shoot them off.

mmmmCherry pie~!

Happy 4th, Kath! Illegal to buy, sell, possess, or shoot off fireworks here. But I do fondly remember setting off firecrackers, snakes, bottle rockets, and sparklersduring the day in the drive on the farm in Kansas as a child. My dad trained us well, with a bucket of water always handy, as befits a child living in the midst of wheat fields. And then at night, he'd do the pinwheels and fountains and we'd get to do the roman candles. Fond memories. When I was in high school, one of my boyfriends ran a fireworks stand. Then we would occasionally set off an (illegal) cherry bomb or M-80. Not at home, though. Under bridges made nice echoes.

Hi Kara!

roni, we did some of that too! I still love snakes :)
they're like magic.

I used to buy sparklers long after the kids left home :)

We have also had fountains.. things that didn't shoot into the air..
One time .. centuries ago.. we bought fountains and Dan bought a round red ball. He lit it
and it jumped into the air and rolled down the hill... right into the neighbors yard.
They were in it. It cured me. I was about 5 at the time, and ... after that, it was a few sparklers.

However, Cory once had a GF visit from Japan, and she hid fireworks in her bags.. and
they set them off. However, it was Jan 1. and we aimed them from the front of our yard to the back,
so that there was no debris or danger to the neighbors...whom we invited here to watch.

Full disclosure.

Cahokia I am nearly finished. Not sure that I will review it..
I am interested in the story...it started sounding a little familiar
at one part, and then Selu was mentioned and I knew why..
I am also interested in the ( very few) references to the Maya.

I do not like the way this man writes. He sounds judgmental and superior to me.
Like Mr Yuppie archaeologist who knows what happened during a time he was yet to be born.
His descriptions sound contrived. I would have left it many pages ago, if I didn't want to

Sorry about the pets' nerves with the firecrackers. Most folks right where I live are pretty responsible, but I've had debris to pick up several times. We're in the back of beyond, so not much police coverage or anything like that. We just muddle on; dh keeps the hoses ready as he has always been deathly afraid of fire in the house.

Ron drove ambulance in fog alert for deer after just seeing the mess of 1st call.
They are trained to hit any deer in the way - something he is hoping never happens.
Prayed for all emergency personnel while I waited to hear him come home.

Now that summer has officially begun, I work towards and hope for winter and peace.

Trying to decide if I want to request an ER book. I have too many of my own books I want to read.

Well, as Cahokia ended, the silly we walk up the valley sort of thing ended. It was filled with
good information, the sort of thing that I used to read a lot. Much of what I read is Mayan history, and
This had that flavor to it.

At the end of the day, I will be giving it 4 stars for content. I might have given it more,
if there weren't so many irritating ( to me ) passages.

84. Cahokia 4 stars

A very informative book about an intriguing period of history, and more about a culture
The Mississippians than I ever thought to find. A reminder that we can look in our own backyard for fascinating and informative history.

Jim and I flew back from cool, green Portland, Oregon on the 4th and were too tired to watch any fireworks. Macy's had them on the Hudson this year, and they must have been more northerly than usual because I couldn't see anything from my window, which faces southwest. I didn't try actually hanging out the window - maybe I could have caught sight of them at the other end of 14th Street.

All my dogs used to be traumatized by the 4th. and thunderstorms. Once Ben (our second) wouldn't come back in the house after his evening romp. Finally, when we couldn't find him, we went to bed. Next morning, after a particularly fierce thunderstorm, we found him shivering under the shrubs. Poor guy.
