I write from hot steamy Beavercreek Ohio where I am visiting my daughter, son in law and grandchildren. Summers here are brutal. Unlike beautiful mountainous Pennsylvania, the surroundings here are flat, flat, flat. The sun bakes down and fries the ground.

I'm inside watching cartoons with the twins where it is air conditioned.

Good luck with your computer Kath.

Well. I guess it's true you should be careful what you wish for. We just finished with a massive thunderstorm, right over our heads. Hi Kath!
Did a rain dance for you - but I must have done something wrong. It rained HERE instead. Oh well. My garden was getting thirsty. I'll try again for you. ;-)

Going to get my eyes checked today. Annual check-up.
However, since my eyes are not so great lately -
I'm hoping a change in prescription might be the answer.
Other than that, I want eye implants.
And I want the kind of eyes that you and Stasia have! Fast readers!

Hope you get some humidity relief and have a good day...

New prescription for reading glasses - old eyes stay in. :P
I suppose I shouldn't complain. I'm not actually blind - yet.

I didn't get any arguments from Mom on the ice cream idea.

So hot. Dan keeps going in and out of the house, so it won't get cool.

Did you get funky new frames?

36-Cee-
Jul 7, 2011, 5:12 pm

nah... I got frames that were $89 (discounted by another $30) basic, comfy.
What the heck - I mostly wear them to read at home.
Who's gonna see them?
When I was trying to find a new frame, I wanted something similar to my old ones.
But the assistant had them in her hand.
I had to ask her to show me what they looked like. Didn't even know!

37mckait
Jul 7, 2011, 5:21 pm

I am picky with them, but if you work the system, like I did..
I got two funky frames, one for trifocals and one for readers..
and for the second time in years, didn't have to pay a dime :)
Cause I had a flex fun to use up from work.

Dan, however, made up for it.

Have somehow managed to avoid needing glasses so far, but seeing as I read by twinkle light and/or a 25 watt bulb, I expect it's just a matter of time. Mom has had glasses her entire life and Dad got glasses at 40, so... yeah, it's coming down the turnpike.

that and driving.. I tried all the combinations to make them work for me and still be able to read.
I am done with them now ..I hope you have better luck!

Pasta salad! ugh! so with you :( I make it about 2x a month for Dan, during the summer. He loves it, no matter which way I make it!

Brit..LoL, Hope it wasn't too muggy last night.. I am hoping for rain again.. this time they promised.. but I dare not believe them. .. sigh.

Terri, I did some porching, too. My neighbor Margie came over, and we sat and talked.
I also had to help dan get the new lattice up for the side of the porch, and install the water faucet.
hot hot hot.

I've worn glass since I was born, it seems. Did the contact thing for many years, but then it just got ridiculous, with one pair of readers over them for the computer and another for reading printed material. I got a pair of glasses I loved with progressive lenses and didn't renew the contacts. But, they keep improving the contacts for oldies like me - I might try them again. Jim thinks I look grand in those half-size readers anyway.

p.s. I found it easier to give up the contacts when the kind I needed to wear didn't come in green. Turquoise eyes - those were the days!

57mckait

Speaking of glasses, we've found a great website for inexpensive glasses, eyebuydirect.com. Their selection comes in all price ranges. Since my hubsters and I are not out to impress anyone anymore we go for the least expensive to mid-range which is like $25. We aren't into bi and tri focals yet so I would hesitate about trying that out online, but for single prescrips it may be worth the try. Maybe what Stephen is looking for?

59Ape
Jul 8, 2011, 8:47 am

I'll definitely need to get a pair before/shortly after getting hired somewhere. I can't read anything from across the room, even big digital clocks. Everything right in front of me is crystal clear though.

Brit: Actually, I had a little trouble with my eyes in high school as well, so maybe I've had problems with them longer than I thought. I remember strugglign to see the board during my senior year whenever I had a seat in the back. Hmmm....

Lynda: Cheap is good, I have no interest spending a lot of money on fancy-looking glasses. Pffft!

Seriously, if you've never had a full eye exam, see an ophthalmogoist. From Jim's experience with bad eyes, I must remind you, they only issue two, and they work best together.

Morning, Kath and all...
Hope everyone finds something good in their day today!

Yes, Stephen - get your eyes checked and be nice to them. They don't last forever and you like to read. :(

I used to be near-sighted and could read the smallest print on anything. Never realized until recently how great it was to have that ability. I am so frustrated now with reading, sewing, needlework, etc. - things I've always loved to do. I would gladly give up far sight to have near sight again.
Loved contacts, but refuse to wear glasses AND contacts together. So, I gave up on contacts too.

Thanks for the website, Lynda. Gonna check this out. Wish I had known about this yesterday.
Ah well. Next time.

66nittnut
Jul 8, 2011, 10:13 am

I'm trying my best to send you some rain. 2 inches in an hour is plain piggy IMO. We should share.

I have some reading glasses. I only really need them when I'm tired (oh, all the time). My kids get the giggles every time I wear them. I don't really understand it. They say it makes me look like Grandma (my mom). Funny ha-ha.

67maggie1944
Jul 8, 2011, 10:56 am

It is true that as one ages, one's eyes age, too. Darn it. I also was a near-sighted wonder and could read all sorts of little, tiny stuff. Now, I still read without glasses, including the computer screen, but not as well as I did. My eyes respond to changing conditions much more slowly and first thing in the morning is kind of a slow start. I do go to the eye doctor regularly because I can not even begin to think what it might be like to not have sight capable of reading! I have to use magnification to read the little stuff now.

68richardderus
Jul 8, 2011, 10:57 am

Ahhh, presbyopia.

69curlysue
Jul 8, 2011, 1:51 pm

lens implants?....The lenses, unlike traditional contact lenses, are surgically inserted into the eyes, not placed on the eyes' surface by the wearer. They are about a third the size of a regular contact lens. After the lens is inserted into the eye, it is invisible to the naked eye, but the lens can be removed by a surgeon if the patient no longer wants it.

I couldn't do it...eek! knife to the eye! no no for me

love my glasses...use them to read, computer work and to drive at night

glad you got some rain, maybe the front I'm getting will move itself up your way this weekend!

70drneutron
Jul 8, 2011, 3:01 pm

Hi Judy, karen and Cee...I don't think the needs an ophthalmologist, an optometrist will do... if there is a problem, he will be sent to a specialist. Listen to your myriad elders Ape, go!

It rained for a while today, rd. Not nearly long enough, but I will take it.

Jenn, I like my readers to be as funky as possible.. :) sadly, way too often I forget to change to my other glasses ( progressive lenses) when I leave home and yes.. presbyopia which started for me in my mid thirties, has taken it's toll. So, I need to give up and leave my older progressives in the car, so I can see...

lens implants sound terrifying to me, kara!

I hate having glasses on my face, but need them for sure these days..I have on occasion, more than I
like to admit, found two pair of glasses on my head, one pair of readers and then the others.

Jim, that was very brave. I wish I could have it though..

Judy and Karen, I am terrified of glaucoma and cataracts. EEK!
So far so good. I fear Dunkers is developing a cataract on his right eye.

Jude.. I am here! and yes.. I was enjoying the rain and fussing over my Duncan..
he was under the weather today. I made him Chicken and Rice with broth for dinner...
it seems like he has perked up since :)

A busy day, one of those busy ones where nothing is accomplished, you know?
Trying to get time to read. I am really enjoying the Tollins book, I just need to get time to dig into it ..
more than halfway through though, and really PO'ed at the little brat who just had to do something she was specifically told not to do. Found out that James Rollins is a ( retired) Veterinarian. No wonder I like his books :)

Cory on his way back ...

Hi, Kath. I know all about the kinds of busy days where nothing is accomplished. Seems like half my life.

I, too, am done with contacts. The last straw was when I scratched my cornea. I COULDN'T wear them again until it healed, then decided I didn't want to any more. I'm also too big a coward for any kind of surgical correction.

79-Cee-
Jul 8, 2011, 8:40 pm

I wish I had asked my eye doc about Lasix surgery.
She perhaps should have suggested it.

I'm having so much trouble with my eyes lately.
I know it's just old eyes... but I want to read for longer than 1 hour at a time w/o eye strain.
It's interesting how they do it now...
they make one eye slightly far-sighted and the other near-sighted,
then the brain blends the signals into the perception of correct vision for both eyes.
That's what I want! Wonder if my brain would do it right?
Maybe I shouldn't chance it :P

80ffortsa
Jul 8, 2011, 9:50 pm

Your doctor can test you for that arrangement with contacts that mimic the difference. That's the good news. Unfortunately, my brain wouldn't accommodate the two different foci. Alas.

but you should be able to read even so. Maybe you should talk to your doctor again.

81maggie1944
Jul 8, 2011, 10:23 pm

I tried the two different corrections, too, and I did not like it, not one bit. My eye might focus, but then the other eye would try to override and focus a different way, and my brain would sit in the middle and say "make up your minds, fools!" Not my solution. Now I buy better lighting, and look for ways to see bigger print.

82mckait
Jul 9, 2011, 7:04 am

I tried it too. It worked fine, as long as I didn't want to "read". Shopping and looking at
labels and other brief reading was fine..but no way could I read a book. It just wasn't worth it.
Lasix is kinda scary

Happy Saturday Kath! Did you all get some thunderstorms? We had quite the rain/thunderstorm last night.

Thanks stas, Brit we had a little thunder yesterday morning.. no storms. We did have
a gentle rain for a couple of hours, which helped a very little bit. Lowe humidity today, bt going to be hot. Dunkers and I were porching for an hour, but the sun finally drove us in.

I'm lucky that my porch is shady for most of the day. The down side is that it limits the flowers I can grow there!

Thanks mark. Hope you're right Lynda. Will walk a little farther
starting soon. Weather matters. The hill kept me from walking for
a long time. That and unsecured dogs. We tangled with running dogs
3x, dunkers and me. I sadly leave him at home now, and walk him in the yard, mostly.
One of our encounters was pretty bloody for both of us. So many dogs just run loose here
and there is no stopping it.

Do you have a phone app like that?

Hi Cee.. I was just saying that I am sick of cooking. Then I went and made a pot of chicken and
rice for the furkids. Go figure.

Some family drama today. My step dad has not been well.. they are trying
to convince him that he needs a pacemaker/defibrillator. He says no.

Then another family member called to have him come running.. his sister was not answering
the phone. Then he found her flat out on the kitchen floor. Hopefully, he will be able to calm down and think about himself soon..no word on his sister...

Busy day.... grocery shopping, laundry, beach walk and rest (on the rocks), supper at the wharf (fresh-as-it-gets fish & chips and crabcakes). Beautiful weather, but the seabreeze died down just now and it's a bit warm for me. Some people like this kind of thing. :P

Sorry about your step-Dad and his sister. Hope they both recover and take good care.

Just want to say - the stuff you make for your furkids (chicken & rice) is one of Ron's favorite suppers. That man has NO taste for the exotic - just wants the basics. One reason I don't like cooking anymore. Gets boring. If I'm gonna put effort into somethng, I want it to be special. Oh well, it's a cross-eyed bear!

Sweet dreams - catch ya on the other side! :)

126tymfos
Jul 10, 2011, 9:25 pm

Oh, my, Kath!

My grandmother initially refused to accept a pacemaker when she was told she needed it. Then she thought about it a while and decided she was still young (72) and, by golly, she wasn't ready to buy the farm yet. She got the pacemaker and lived to age 86.

Scary about his sister. Same sort of scenario happened with my other grandmother, and my mom found her on the floor when she went to see why she didn't answer the phone. Very upsetting, I was around three years old; it's one of my earliest clear memories.

I hope they both will get what they need and be OK.

Terri
Well.. Walt is 82 -83 not sure
He has led the healthiest life you can imagine..
he worked until he was about 78
walked and walked and eats very carefully.
Still he has battled cholesterol and other problems of that sort.
He finally .. a few days ago agreed to a life alert, when my sister brought it
up in front of the doctor. that is a good thing. He has had a few bad falls
and incidents.

His sister? no news. Walt came home, and a sister in law
went with Claire to hospital . Walter goes to bed early, so...by
the time his sister was sorted, I imagine that he was sound asleep.
I am just grateful for Irene, who has her own troubles... because there is
no way Walt could have handled it all.

Megan.. I can cook a fair amount of food.. lol match made in heaven!

Did anyone watch that Jacee Dugard interview last night?
What an amazing and beautiful young lady. She is so
forgiving. Her mom, is a tigress who I think should be allowed to exact
her own justice on those vile people.

129Carmenere
Jul 11, 2011, 8:10 am

Actually I think this really made Walt think and he will be getting his ASAP

131maggie1944
Jul 11, 2011, 11:19 am

From an older person's POV: Life Alert is a bald faced admittance that I am too old to take care of myself, and it is a huge slap in the Pride. When I first was ill with RA, I had a hard time with some very basic bodily functions, and without going into details, I'll tell you it was very embarrassing and frustrating and humiliating. It is quite the challenge to realize that you are slowly sliding down a hill towards being an infant again.

Now, don't start in with "oh, that is so silly". It is not silly and it does rob one of dignity. However, it is only fair to those who love me to be able to avoid the tragedy of being so ill that I can't call for help. When the time comes, I'll get one.

132mckait
Jul 11, 2011, 11:41 am

Thanks for your input karen..

but circumstances this past year, including his heart beginning to fail..
that it is time. I have heard that they make one that looks like a watch? But seriously, if he is going to wear a religious medal around his neck, adding a button might just give him the help he needs to have
to keep him from meeting that saint sooner than need be. Sometimes, a loving family might be more
aware of need than the person themselves, imo.

I think once he gets it, and gets used to it, he will be fine with it. I know that he was horrified to find his sister in a huge puddle of urine on the kitchen floor, and I think that wearing a bracelet or whatever is, in the end, less humiliating. It is a shame that something so useful is seen that way though :(

86. Prophecy: The Fulfillment by Deborah A Jaeger

This is a Pre- Apocalyptic story that is heavy on the religion.
You have heard of the Virgin who became pregnant and was
told by an angel that she was chosen by God, I am sure. Well,
it's happening again in the present day. The young lady is a teenager
whose father is a professor in a Divinity School in Nashville. Her mom
is a mental health professional, who like all moms, begins to blame herself
when their lives begin to shatter and their child, Jillian turns up pregnant.

Thank you ... Claire was 88 or 89, and had lived a long and curiously interesting life.

I hope her journey of spirit was more peaceful than her passing would lead one to believe.

So sorry to hear about Claire, and hope Walter is doing better soon.

180-Cee-
Jul 12, 2011, 5:46 pm

The story is a bit sketchy as I recall.

Claire did not answer her phone as usual and a concerned friend (?) contacted Walter and emergency personnel to go in and check on her. Claire was found unconscious on her kitchen floor. She had burns. She was transported to hospital, did not regain consciousness, actual events at home not known as Claire was alone and never able to talk to anyone.

The following day the police were contacted to make sure doors were locked. Done.
A further check revealed Claire's oven was still on and burner was also (gas stove).
Terrible handling of emergency scene.

Did I get this about right, Kath?

I'm so sorry to see she has died, Kath. Not a pleasant end. Perhaps she was unaware of final moments and did not suffer. I am also wishing her spirit a peaceful journey...
Now to get Walter to take better care of himself. Good Luck.

I was sitting here taling to cory last night and started feeling
light headed.. like I needed to eat or something? So I ate some orange..
and it didn't help. When I got up a few minutes later..
I realized it was vertigo coming on.. ugh!
I got him out, and my own bedtime ritual sorted and
went to bed and held on.

I am better this morning.. still having a wired twinge to the right now and then,
but basically fine. That vertigo is scary weird ! Not to mention unpleasant.

87. Psychic Intelligence: Tune In and Discover the Power of Your Intuition by Terry & Linda Jamison

We saw these women on tv. I do believe that they are the real deal... but Dan asked for the book.
I never do not grab a book that he asks for I just get it. He is not a reader.. so, when he wants a book, I get it.

It is as expected, just another version of all of these book, which I have read ...enough...of.
But, I figured as long as it was here.. so I read it. 3 stars. Good for what it is.

Good morning, Kath...
sending peaceful energy for you and family
It's a tough week for you all.

Our temps right now are both 71 and our highs today are both predicted to be 80.
Better for you? A bit warm for me.
Dry air coming for us tomorrow.
Need to be docent again this afternoon :P
This art is early 20th century modern - most of it is not really to my taste.

but I saw him this morning.. he is bucking up a little.
They don't want anyone to come to the funeral..
it is a little weird.. They don't want me.. or my kids

'Mornin!

Haircut tomorrow, taking two trombones to Music & Arts to be serviced before daughter needs them when she goes off to college on August 19th, watching USA vs Japan Women's Soccer on Sunday, trying to figure out how we can fit the new Harry Potter into all that. Oh, plus the usual - laundry, food shopping, light gardening, feeding family, etc.

Alter of Eden sounds intriguing.....

Happy Friday, Kath!

It's always a hoot deciphering your messages! LOL
I got a jolt when you said "Craig's fight was today"
Last thing you need is Craig getting into a fight!

Hope you are well recovered and things are settling down a bit with Walter & Deb.

Today I am meeting with a friend to discuss my offer to read to the children at the library
next month.
Tonight I go to see "Annie" at the Maine State Music Theater... all alone. *sniff*
But I am looking forward to getting out. I love to watch concerts and performances of all kinds.
A musical will be a fun treat.

Saturday evening - Ron and I are going to a ballgame. Hope it's not too hot.
Sunday - open. Wanna come over and have some lobster at the wharf?

Hot here too... but!

Big news... despite all of the dire warnings of the other day..
my mac is back!
It looks all shiny and new.
New battery, new hinges, new thingy around the screen
new cover across the keyboard area.. and it is so clean!!!
It looks like the cleaned the keys in Clorox :)
It passed all hardware tests
and I can hardly contain myself. They called while I was in the basement,
with laundry. I flew to the phone and pretty much straight out the door. I
even forced myself to stop for cat-lax FIRST!

Now mac and I are home .

That's great. What a relief to have it back, and in such pristine condition, too!

My keyboard at work is shame-inducing. I've pried up some of the keys to clean them, but without the right handy tools, I'm always worried I'll break a key. It's an old ergonomic design that can't be exactly replaced, so I'm careful. When I retire, some time in the future, I plan to ask for it and the driver as parting gifts. No one else likes it anyway. And then I'll get out the Clorox.
