What 5 have you got coming up next?
I have a bunch from the library I need to finish, so here's my best guess:
Street Gang: Complete History of Sesame Street
Before the Fact
The Color of Lightning
A Country Doctor
The Haunting of Hill House

I like this topic. A little peak into someone else's library.
I'm about 1/3 of the way through my Poe collection, after that I'll probably move to something newer. I've kind of been alternating between old and new this year.
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
We Who Are Alive and Remain by Marcus Brotherton
Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas
The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold
My best guess at least for the next few.

The following is my plan for October, if I finish The Night Circus and 1492: The Year the World Began by Oct 31 +/-
Curse of the Mistwraith by Janny Wurts, with the Green Dragon group read
Rebecca Daphne Du Maurier, Tales of H.P. Lovecraft by (guess), and The Haunted Bookshop by Christopher Morley. All 3 are for October/Halloween-y reading. Thanks to drneutron
A Rule Against Murder - maybe
The Long Walk: A Story of War and the Life That Follows by Brian Castner - maybe

The ones I'm most interested in at the moment are:
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson
Small Steps : The Year I Got Polio by Peg Kehret
A Very Great Profession : the woman's novel 1914-39 by Nicola Beauman
The End of the Alphabet by C. S. Richardson
Terra : tales of the Earth : four events that changed the world by Richard Hamblyn
But my selection is subject to change without notice, based on whim and convenience.

I seldom think five books ahead. Two or three, that's about it. My next selection is nearly always mood-driven and/or a reaction to the book just finished: want more of the same or need a drastic change.
The next few that may be coming up for me:
The First Rule of Ten: A Tenzing Norbu Mystery, by Gay Hendricks
Creating Consciousness: A Study of Consciousness, Creativity, and Violence, by Albert Low
The Dream Life of Sukhanov, by Olga Grushin

I am a two or three ahead person, myself, since I read for a local book club, and I'm susceptible to a spontaneous bump. Having finished the Snow Child and three mainstream thrillers including Deep Shadow by Randy Wayne White one of my husband's favorites. I see why, very taut, once past the gruesome opening.
First up, most anticipated: I want to reread Jennifer Roberson's excellent Karavans books to make the most of the new on, atop the TBR.
The Wild Road by Jennifer Roberson
Then continue the slow burn reads I've got going:
Lies of Locke Lamora - it's taking me forever.
and pick up with Acacia by David Anthony Durham

I don't think that far ahead. :)

Just purchased The Curse of the Mistwraith so I could join in the reading fun with the group, so, guess that is right near the top. It is bound to be vastly different than The Bartender's Tale which I just finished and has left me not wanting to pick up anything else for a bit.

The new Rowling, The casual vacancy, is sneaking quietly to the top of Mt TBR. O_O
I can recommend The night circus, catzteach! And I'd like to disrecommend/unrecommend Eon, Morph. It's a waste of time. The main character is a dumb, spineless whiner. :-(
And Hibernator, are you saying you haven't read Harry Potter yet? Seriously?? O_O Endangered species! ;-)

(19) The_Hibernator, you've got two on your TBR that I need to read: Surprised by Joy and Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry.

I'll take several months to do it because I don't want to OD on rereads, but I thought it would be fun to experience it all again knowing what the ending will be. :) Were we only supposed to include books that hadn't ever been read? I thought it was just the next 5 books that I want to read. :)

Fuzzi, I'm on that list too. I just couldn't get into the books when they first came out and now I'm not sure I ever will. I have a friend who keeps telling me I can borrow hers when I'm ready to read them. We'll see. I'm so busy reading other stuff.
Just picked up Night Circus at the library!! I'll read it when I'm done with Pathfinder.
And I put Gone Girl on the request list. It's been highly recommended on another site.

I didn't do too well with my guess. I found The Color of Lightning too grim to finish and Before the Fact drove me nuts with the dumbest MC I have read in a LONG time.
Newest stack:
The Monstrumologist
The Code Book
Truman
The Hot Zone
Inside Out
I'm noticing several on here that are on my TBR list as well, but I haven't gotten a copy of them yet. We Who Are Alive, The Curse of the Mistwraith, Night Circus, Surprised by Joy, The Casual Vacancy, Triangle: The Fire. Miss Pettigrew was one of my favorite books last year - enjoy!
I plan several ahead, but it's never really a firm plan. I go by what I'm in the mood for. And I always have one going on my Kindle, library books, and then the stack of TBR in my bedroom. So it just depends on what catches my eye when I finish my current read.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day turns out to be the only one on my list that I got to. It was great--definitely one of my favourites for this year. I like cheerful books.
I was distracted by Ostrich Farmer and Other Stories by Bailey White, Horton Halfpott by Tom Angleberger, and best of all, The Medusa and the Snail by Lewis Thomas. I will be looking for more by Lewis Thomas.
So next up will be to finish Asleep by Molly Caldwell Crosby and An Optimist's Tour of the Future by Mark Stevenson. Then maybe something from my list in #12.

and then after I finish those, probably Concourse because I just read the first book in the series a couple weeks ago.

I also read Persepolis and have received Persepolis 2 which I will probably read before I return to my plan. I will need to read Triangle soon as it will be discussed at the next book group meeting, November 12. I will have to make my contribution via email, as I'll be in Hawaii.

The First Rule of Ten: A Tenzing Norbu Mystery, by Gay Hendricks

I am not good at PLANS! I just don't follow them.
I did finish reading Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis and Persepolis 2. I did not return to my October plan, but I am starting on my November "Group Read" book: Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln because it is huge; and I need to finish it during the month so I can participate in the discussion.
October spooky books will just have to wait until next year, I guess. Sigh.

I always have an idea of books I want to read next. My problem is that before I get to them, I usually find books that I didn't know I wanted to read next and they jump to the top of the list. So right now, my best guess (sure to be wrong) on the top five are:

Redshirts by John Scalzi
Pines by Blake Crouch

I'm excited to read Redshirts but I haven't gotten a copy of it yet, so it will have to wait.
I was really grossed out by The Monstrumologist. First book to give me gruesome nightmares in a long time. Truman went back to the library unread because I ran out of time. Really liked The Code Book and my son is reading it now. I also liked The Hot Zone.

I read The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. I don't usually read true crime, but this had a lot about the social conditions of the time and state of criminology, so I really liked it.
