What 5 have you got coming up next?

I have a bunch from the library I need to finish, so here's my best guess:

Street Gang: Complete History of Sesame Street
Before the Fact
The Color of Lightning
A Country Doctor
The Haunting of Hill House

Curse of the Mistwraith - Janny Wurts

Fractal Prince, by Hannu Rajaniemi
Excession & State of the Art, by Iain M Banks
Keeping it Real, by Justina Robson (which is the first in a series, which makes me hesitate a bit)
Port Eternity, by C.J. Cherryh

So, something new, something old, and something in-between :)

La bohème et l'ivraie by Ayerdhal

Jhereg by Steven Brust

Next still up in the air, maybe some more Vlad Taltos adventures, or #3 of the Malazan book of the Fallen Memories of Ice.

I like this topic. A little peak into someone else's library.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through my Poe collection, after that I'll probably move to something newer. I've kind of been alternating between old and new this year.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
We Who Are Alive and Remain by Marcus Brotherton
Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas
The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold

My best guess at least for the next few.

I'm not sure what I'll be reading next: I'm in a reading slump, nothing interests me.

My library books
A Fistful of Collars by Spencer Quinn
The Companions by Sheri Tepper
Good Night, Mr. Holmes by Carole Nelson Douglas
The Big Sky by AB Guthrie
Joy in the Morning by Betty Smith

The following is my plan for October, if I finish The Night Circus and 1492: The Year the World Began by Oct 31 +/-

Curse of the Mistwraith by Janny Wurts, with the Green Dragon group read
Rebecca Daphne Du Maurier, Tales of H.P. Lovecraft by (guess), and The Haunted Bookshop by Christopher Morley. All 3 are for October/Halloween-y reading. Thanks to drneutron
A Rule Against Murder - maybe
The Long Walk: A Story of War and the Life That Follows by Brian Castner - maybe
and finally, for my RL book group - Triangle: The Fire That Changed America

I seldom think five books ahead. Two or three, that's about it. My next selection is nearly always mood-driven and/or a reaction to the book just finished: want more of the same or need a drastic change.

The next few that may be coming up for me:

The First Rule of Ten: A Tenzing Norbu Mystery, by Gay Hendricks
Creating Consciousness: A Study of Consciousness, Creativity, and Violence, by Albert Low
The Dream Life of Sukhanov, by Olga Grushin

I am a two or three ahead person, myself, since I read for a local book club, and I'm susceptible to a spontaneous bump. Having finished the Snow Child and three mainstream thrillers including Deep Shadow by Randy Wayne White one of my husband's favorites. I see why, very taut, once past the gruesome opening.

First up, most anticipated: I want to reread Jennifer Roberson's excellent Karavans books to make the most of the new on, atop the TBR.

The Wild Road by Jennifer Roberson

Then continue the slow burn reads I've got going:
Lies of Locke Lamora - it's taking me forever.
and pick up with Acacia by David Anthony Durham

I don't think that far ahead. :)

I have the Night Circus on hold at the library. I need to buy Curse of the Mistwraith this weekend (payday). And I really want to read The Glass Castle soon. Oh, and I need to read Saving CeeCee Honeycut for bookclub.

21MrsLee
Sep 28, 2012, 12:51 am

Just purchased The Curse of the Mistwraith so I could join in the reading fun with the group, so, guess that is right near the top. It is bound to be vastly different than The Bartender's Tale which I just finished and has left me not wanting to pick up anything else for a bit.

The new Rowling, The casual vacancy, is sneaking quietly to the top of Mt TBR. O_O

I can recommend The night circus, catzteach! And I'd like to disrecommend/unrecommend Eon, Morph. It's a waste of time. The main character is a dumb, spineless whiner. :-(

And Hibernator, are you saying you haven't read Harry Potter yet? Seriously?? O_O Endangered species! ;-)

>22 Ennas: I'm near finished with Eon and while I don't totally agree, I can see where you are coming from. The main character isn't exactly a pillar of strength.

Edited: Sep 28, 2012, 7:28 am

(19) The_Hibernator, you've got two on your TBR that I need to read: Surprised by Joy and Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry.

I'm also on the endangered species list: I have not read one Harry Potter book, and at this time I don't have any great desire to do so in the near future.

Edited: Sep 28, 2012, 7:30 am

>22 Ennas: Haha, no, I've read Harry Potter. I've just never read the series through in "one go." I'll take several months to do it because I don't want to OD on rereads, but I thought it would be fun to experience it all again knowing what the ending will be. :) Were we only supposed to include books that hadn't ever been read? I thought it was just the next 5 books that I want to read. :)

>24 fuzzi: I'm reading Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry and Harry Potter for Banned Books Week next week. :)

26fuzzi
Sep 28, 2012, 7:33 am

(25) Thanks for reminding me of Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry: I need to return Garment of Shadows to the library tonight after work (HIGHLY recommended!) and I can pick up the other at the same time.

I think I might have Surprised by Joy on my bookshelves, but am not sure. Time to do a shelf search...

I think this endangered species should die out (english??) as soon as possible. ;-) This time, the hype was justified. Really. Try it. You're missing out on a real treat!

>24 fuzzi: I resisted reading the series for years, until I got stuck on a boat with only the Harry Potter books my sister dragged along. I didn't like the first, the second was mediocre, but the third and on are worthwhile.

Sep 29, 2012, 6:55 pm

Fuzzi, I'm on that list too. I just couldn't get into the books when they first came out and now I'm not sure I ever will. I have a friend who keeps telling me I can borrow hers when I'm ready to read them. We'll see. I'm so busy reading other stuff.

Just picked up Night Circus at the library!! I'll read it when I'm done with Pathfinder.

And I put Gone Girl on the request list. It's been highly recommended on another site.

My TBR:
1. Feed - Mira Grant - started this yesterday

The order is subject to change but,

The Woman Who Died A Lot by Jasper Fforde (he's coming to my local bookstore next week, yay!)
The Beauty and the Sorrow by Peter Englund
The Shadowy Horses by Susanna Kearsley
The Bolter by Frances Osborne
The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers

I didn't do too well with my guess. I found The Color of Lightning too grim to finish and Before the Fact drove me nuts with the dumbest MC I have read in a LONG time.

Newest stack:
The Monstrumologist
The Code Book
Truman
The Hot Zone
Inside Out

I'm noticing several on here that are on my TBR list as well, but I haven't gotten a copy of them yet. We Who Are Alive, The Curse of the Mistwraith, Night Circus, Surprised by Joy, The Casual Vacancy, Triangle: The Fire. Miss Pettigrew was one of my favorite books last year - enjoy!

I plan several ahead, but it's never really a firm plan. I go by what I'm in the mood for. And I always have one going on my Kindle, library books, and then the stack of TBR in my bedroom. So it just depends on what catches my eye when I finish my current read.

33SylviaC
Edited: Oct 11, 2012, 9:30 pm

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day turns out to be the only one on my list that I got to. It was great--definitely one of my favourites for this year. I like cheerful books.

I was distracted by Ostrich Farmer and Other Stories by Bailey White, Horton Halfpott by Tom Angleberger, and best of all, The Medusa and the Snail by Lewis Thomas. I will be looking for more by Lewis Thomas.

So next up will be to finish Asleep by Molly Caldwell Crosby and An Optimist's Tour of the Future by Mark Stevenson. Then maybe something from my list in #12.

I really don't plan ahead, but since I have some library books, in no particular order:
Goodbye, Columbus
Gentlemen of the Road
Global Frequency vol 1
Unknown Soldier vol 1
and then after I finish those, probably Concourse because I just read the first book in the series a couple weeks ago.

Here's what I thought was going to happen:

But here's what did happen:

I finished The Night Circus and 1492: The Year the World Began as planned. I started Rebecca and The Haunted Bookshop and they are languishing unread because I received my newest Timothy Egan book - Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher which I am inhaling! I also read Persepolis and have received Persepolis 2 which I will probably read before I return to my plan. I will need to read Triangle soon as it will be discussed at the next book group meeting, November 12. I will have to make my contribution via email, as I'll be in Hawaii.

So much for well laid plans, eh?

36MrsLee

I'm not doing very well with the three I listed above. I don't think I'm cut out for planned reading, more of a moment by moment girl. :)

37Meredy
Oct 14, 2012, 5:38 pm

On September 27 I laid out these three:

The First Rule of Ten: A Tenzing Norbu Mystery, by Gay Hendricks
Creating Consciousness: A Study of Consciousness, Creativity, and Violence, by Albert Low
The Dream Life of Sukhanov, by Olga Grushin

I've finished the first and the third, but I abandoned the second because it was a serious disappointment to me.

What I have going right now:

The Story of the Stone
The Blind Owl

Upcoming:
Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned, by Walter Mosley
George, Nicholas and Wilhelm: Three Royal Cousins and the Road to World War I, by Miranda Carter
Broken Harbor, by Tana French

*hanging her head, blushing*

I am not good at PLANS! I just don't follow them.

I did finish reading Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis and Persepolis 2. I did not return to my October plan, but I am starting on my November "Group Read" book: Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln because it is huge; and I need to finish it during the month so I can participate in the discussion.

October spooky books will just have to wait until next year, I guess. Sigh.

Oct 24, 2012, 12:30 pm

I always have an idea of books I want to read next. My problem is that before I get to them, I usually find books that I didn't know I wanted to read next and they jump to the top of the list. So right now, my best guess (sure to be wrong) on the top five are:

Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman
Redshirts by John Scalzi
Pines by Blake Crouch
The Casual Vacancy by J. K. Rowling
King of Thorns by Mark Lawrence

I like this thread because someone can persuade you one way or the other about a book on your list, or they can be persuaded by seeing what you are reading! Fun stuff!

I'm excited to read Redshirts but I haven't gotten a copy of it yet, so it will have to wait.

I was really grossed out by The Monstrumologist. First book to give me gruesome nightmares in a long time. Truman went back to the library unread because I ran out of time. Really liked The Code Book and my son is reading it now. I also liked The Hot Zone.

Guesses on next up:

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall for book group
Reread of
East
The Thief

And from the library
Mr Chartwell
The Information Officer

43.Monkey.
Oct 28, 2012, 4:58 pm

I'm about to start Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and after that (in no particular order) I also have from the library:
Monster of Florence
Yeats Selected Plays

DMZ vol 7: War Powers
Unknown Soldier vol 2: Easy Kill
Fables vol 13: The Great Fables Crossover

The Wind-Up Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi

(1) Corey Olson's Exploring J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit which I've not wanted to touch until I had gotten through my own reading of the book on my own.
(2) The Sabbath World by Judith Shulevitz
(3) Seraphina by Rachel Hartman (for the marvelous dragons in it...
(4) Existence by David Brin
(5) The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher

So a bit of a mix there...

46cmbohn
Dec 28, 2012, 1:07 pm

I read The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. I don't usually read true crime, but this had a lot about the social conditions of the time and state of criminology, so I really liked it.

Finished all mine I mentioned above (42) except The Thief, but I still want to reread that one. Right now I have a good stack from the library so here's my guesses:

The Final Hour - last in a thriller series I've really liked
Princess Academy - reread
A Beautiful Blue Death - on TBR forever!
The Damascened Blade
Shadows in Bronze - 2nd in a classic Roman mystery series
