I need to find a way to sneak balisaur into conversation now...

I am sincerely miffed about this, if the allegations are upheld.

>2 tkgough: What do we call a balisaur if we can't call it a balisaur? Or, what do you think Robert Burchfield thought we should call a balisaur? Or, what is the best way of giving balisaur a leg up, so that it earns its place in the Oxford English Corpus and re-entry into future editions of the OED, whether printed or not - and will this thread help?

I don't think they are going to do another print run in the next edition :-(

> 5 No, I'm sure they won't - my son bought a full set (at fairly modest price) in case it went out of print: I'd have done the same, but really couldn't find the space without sacrifice of other desirable books.

ETA I assume the whole idea of 'edition' will fade with the switch to online.

Modest? I can't find a modestly priced set! Any help?

So what we really need now is an editor who is prepared to do the same with 'my bad', 'big ask' and 'misunderestimated', should they ever creep in (or maybe they already have?).

Dont forget 'irregardless'. And 'was like', when meaning 'said'.

I'm still planning to but the OED in print as soon as I can save up the money. Although I'm not sure whether to get from Amazon (heard they have appaling delivery and packaging) or directly from OUP

#10 (heard they have appaling delivery and packaging) I can't speak for Denmark but in the UK Amazon have free p&p.

>7 LesMiserables:,10 My son's came very well packed and delivered direct from OUP. The Press price at present is £750 for 20 volumes (but there are four additional volumes), which I described as 'fairly modest' because it was much more when first published. This is still a lot, of course, but the value is permanent. The sales office people are helpful.

As a footnote, I see that the DNB is also much reduced in price these days: 'only' £1500 for 60 volumes, which I take also as a signal it won't stay in a print version permanently.

>7 LesMiserables:,10,12 I purchased the compact edition in the early 90s for a fraction of that price. Keeping track of the magnifying glass whenever I move is a challenge, but I appreciate the extra shelf space it gives me. I think there are a couple of addenda, though, which I should probably grab while they're still available.

>12 affle: I can't track the original price of OED2 print edition, but the DNB was originally £7500, so now at 80% discount.

'my bad' would be the death of me. :-(

The DNB is really a must have for me, even at £1500. It's such a wonderful read.

Dirty tricks in The Guardian. Today's Wordpool invites readers to choose the correct definition of 'balisaur', 'danchi', and 'wake-up'. Cheats who look them up in their OED2 will be disappointed - but we know, don't we?

(Sorry, can't find the puzzle section online.)
