2013 will be the year of the book for me!

My husband and I will be building my library over the next few months; floor to ceiling book cases, comfy chair, a few pillows and maybe a blanket, a table to write on and I am turning the internet upside down looking for an affordable library card catalogue. You know the kind I mean; deep rich wood, multiple drawers, brass handles...

Third Place Thingers Book Group has some great reads lined up for 2013

The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman
Guards, Guards by Terry Pratchett
The Magus by John Fowles
Cairns: Messengers in Stone by David B. Williams
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind
Aleppo Codex: The True Story of Obsession, Faith, and the Pursuit of an Ancient Bible by Matti Friedman
Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn
The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe
Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer
Boneshaker by Cherie Priest
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman
The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe

January:

1. Widows Weeds: Lessons Learned from the Death of a Partner By: Lisa Courtney - - I cried, I laughed, I celebrated, I shared Lisa's anger, and in the end, I hugged Lisa and took her out to lunch. This is a series of short stories told by a women desperately trying to make sense of her husband’s impending death. This time the reaper, who is clothed in cancer, has his hands full with Lisa's barbed humor and cutting retorts as Lisa leads us on a journey which, although filled with pain and fear, never side-steps into despair. *****

2. The Dovekeepers by: Alice Hoffman - - An extra star added for the historical and religious research.
I almost gave up on reading The Dovekeepers, but continued to the end. The Dovekeepers is wrote in five parts, one per woman with the last part wrapping up the book.
I found the initial main character to be whiney and helpless, her brother abandoned her and her father, yet he is her hero; her father treats her with disdain, yet she follows him into the desert with limited food and water.
I plowed through part one though and was introduced to another main character in part two, who has some backbone, but little intellect. The other characters were equally lacking in content, including the Roman slave who had the feel of filler character.
Ultimately, the plot and characters would build up although never quite hitting a crescendo and then fall flat, failing to materialize. ***

3. The Last Unicorn by: Peter S. Beagle - - I really want to like this book, but I am having a very difficult time getting through it. **

4. Guards Guards by: Terry Pratchet - - Entertaining, but alas, not a book I would read again. ***

February:

5. The Daring Truth about Anne Boleyn: Cutting through the Myth by: Sylwia S. Zupanec - - Interesting points to ponder. I will give the book 3 stars simply because it made me think. The score would have been higher, except the grammar errors drove me batty! ***

6. Pulled by: A.L. Jackson - - Easy read, good character development, but the plot was predictable. ***

March:

7. The Magus by: John Fowles - - I had to wade my way through this book; the story line was good, the plot and characters developed nicely, but it took forever to read. ***

8. The Time Traveler's Guide to Medeival England by: Ian Mortimer - - Finally a travel guide containing food, lodging and entertainment options for the 1300's. ****

9. The Wrecking Ball by: Christiana Spens - - Four twenty-something's with trust funds and pedigrees looking for the next decadent high, the next party, the next town. A poignant look at the dream life, where boredom can lead to self - destruction. ****

10. Cairns: Messengers in Stone by: David B. Williams -- What can I say, this book has a little bit of everything in it. Geology, history, ancient religion, anthropology, and stories. Great Read! *****

April:

11. She-Wolves: The Women Who Ruled England Before Elizabeth by: Helen Castor -- Beautifully researched! This historical book shares the stories of Matilda, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Isabella of France, Margaret of Anjou, and Mary Tudor in an easy to read informative setting. If you crave royal history, read this one! ****
-
12. Beautiful Creatures by: Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl -- Easy and fast read, compelling characters, storyline flows nicely. Great for a lazy afternoon of reading ****

13. Beautiful Darkness by: Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl -- Happiness is reading a good book! ****

14. Unpublished Short Stories by: An Author Friend -- I was asked by a friend to read some of her short stories and provide feed back. Love them! *****

15. Beautiful Chaos by: Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl ****

16. Perfume by: Patrick Suskind Wrote in third person narrative. This book was difficult for me to read, it never grabbed my attention. ***

17. Dream Dark by: Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl A Beautiful Creatures story told from Linc's side. ***

18. Beautiful Redemption by: Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl Thank goodness I have finished this series, now I can get back to some real reading. ****

19. The Children of Henry VIII by: John Guy

May:

20. Speak by: Laurie Halse Anderson. Speak delivers a strong message to our children; respect each other! Great book. *****

21. The Mummy by: Anne Rice

22. Perfume by: Patrick Suskind. I had to apologise to my book club for suggesting this book. We all agreed, it wasn't worth the time it took to read. *

23. Broken Flower by: V.C. Andrews. I love curling up with a V.C. Andrews story. Engrossing storylines, Great character building and proof that humans are flawed creatures. ****

24. Boleyn King by: Laura Anderson. I received this ARC of Laura Anderson's Boleyn King as part of Library Thing's Early Reviewers. Boleyn King contains enough history to remain true to the Tudor era and dynasty, enough fantasy to make it entertaining and enough emotions to pull you in for a great "What if" ride. Well done Ms. Anderson, well done.

I'm jealous of your library in the making! And Dovekeepers is on my near agenda as well, so I'll keep an eye out for your thoughts!

Hi Whitewavedarling I will post pictures as we go, right now it is an empty room with walls that need painting - I just finished plastering the holes that over-rambunctious teenage boys put in them.

Library update:
I called off work today and spent the entire day with a paintbrush! The walls are the color of the desert sand when the evening sun is kissing the dunes goodnight.
I took off the closet doors and put them in storage (ugly slated things), I am going to buy some nice floor length drapes to frame a sitting area inside the closet.
Tomorrow, I measure and plan the layout!

Will post pics as soon as I figure out how.
