122. A Room With a View by E.M. Foster. I have to admit that it was hard for me to get into this but after I found the movie and watch it I was able to sail right through. Why do we always feel we have to settle what everyone else wants for us. 3.5 stars

128. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien I think I just read this at the wrong time because I really had to force myself to finish this. Not that it was a bad book but right now I can only give it a 3.5 STARS.

129. War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy I dont know why but I have had this book for several years now and have been afraid of it I think because of the size. But I love this story. IM GIVING THIS A 5 STAR

I'm glad you gave Les Miserables a 5! It's a cracker isn't it. Interesting to see that you've also just read one of my other few 5* books - Titus Groan. Gormenghast is just as good, if not better than the first, so you're in or a treat!

Oh Good because that is the book that is up next. And I loved War and Peace just as much and if you havent read that one yet your in for a treat also.

Hmm, you're convincing me to have a pop at War and Peace now. My little brother was not very complimentary about it so I had been putting off, but you've given me faith now.

Well I found a BBC mini series that did the book alot of justice a bit long but after all it was made into a mini series and not just a movie. I have to admit I did watch the movie along with the book and I just loved it. Plus there are not as many political rants as in Les Miserables or not as long. I have to admit at first its hard keeping the characters straight because the Russian has 2 or 3 names that they go by but once you get them down (and the movie will help with that or it did me) you will love it. I PROMISE since it seems like we have the same taste in books most of the time.

131. Animal Farm by George Orwell.... A good way to state the point that no matter how innocent or good intentions any political system starts out to be it will also end up corrupt. There will only be a few that the system befits there will always be an upper class that will live in comfort from the sweat and labor of majority of the lower class. 3 Stars

132. Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Funny how quickly these kids turned into little savages. 3 stars

133. The Forstye Saga by John Glasworthy. Loved this family saga and even looking back at my own family it amazes me how much the actions and drama of past generations spill over into the new furture generations and the new generation has these attitudes and dislikes for people and have no idea as to why. But I have to say I will miss the Forstyes 4.5 stars

134. The Bluest Eyes by Toni Morrison. Such as a sad little girl that just wants blue eyes because so she can be pretty like the white little girls. She just broke my heart hoping and wishing for something that could never be true (maybe today with the colored contacts) and drove her to madness that and her father raping her. And here all of my life I just hated my really fair skin and freckles just now at the age of 40 something am I to say you know what this is how I am made that Im okay with that. 4 stars

135. Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison Not sure what to say about this one. Loved the story but the ending was kinda flat for me. But being a person that loves to hunt for secrets and answers Song of Solomon was very readable. 3.5 stars

137. The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing. The book started out with great promise and ended up really flat for me. Really not sure what else to say about this one expect I get to mark it off. 3 stars

I felt pretty much the same way about The Golden Notebook, although I felt it picked up again for a bit near the 2/3 point, but didn't sustain my interest for the rest of the book.

OKAY Went through and here are the books that I guess I just forogt to list.

140. All Quiet on the Western Front I cant believe I didnt list this one because I still rememeber just how sad war can be... "What are we fighting for...I suppose to hate the French but I actually like them.... and then tomorrow it will come down that we now like the French...... Paraphasing of course but this was 4 stars

141. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland read this one a year or so ago guess I just overlooked listing this one also. We all know the story 3.5 stars

142. Elegance of the Hedgehog Amazing how we think we know someone that we see every single day and we know nothing at all. And why do we feel like we have to hide our true self from others. The ending did slap me in my forehead I didnt see that one coming at all. 3.5 stars

143. The Moonstone I should really go back and read this one because I started the 1st half of the book on my kindle but it went completely out on me so it wasnt for another 3 months before I picked it up again so if I had read it all in one sitting it would of carried more of a punch for me. But by the end of the book I didnt really care anymore who took the jewel and why. 3 stars

144 Therese Raquin Another one I read a year or so ago but still remember this. This is the french version of Crime and Punishment. Im glad the husband haunted both of them. 4 stars

148. Bouvard and Pecuchet by Gustave Flaubert. I have to admit very disappointed in this book. I loved Madame Bovary but this was a real let down. Two older clerks that met in a park and notice they have a few things in common strike up a friendship. One of the clerks comes into some kind of money (sorry cant really remember right now) and the other one just retires and they buy this house out in the country. They find something that interest them and spend large amounts of money on it and lose interest to find something else and the cycle continues until they are back to where the were at the beginning of the story BROKE. The best I can give this is maybe a 2 1/2 stars.

149. Bleak House by charles Dickens. Im on a Dickens mission this year and what a perfect book to start out with. I shed a few tears for poor Jo and Lady Deadlock, felt for poor peppie and also laughed a few times at him. And actually cry tears of joy for Esther. 5 stars

150 Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. I was not always a Austen fan but I found a bio of her life and now knowing her life I realize she was very tongue and cheek about girls being on the 'Marriage hunt" and just the nosely habits of "polite" society make reading her books alot easier. 3.5 stars.

Feb 10, 2014, 4:38 pm

151. The Time Machine by H.G. Wells Im just not a big fan of sci fi stuff but it was a quick read and another one I can mark off the 1001 list. 3 stars

152. Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks. Yet another book that I would have never picked up on my own and loved it. I have so many thoughts on this book I honestly dont know where to start. Just reading about the conditions that these men had to live in had me saying MY GOD MY GOD more then once and I almost felt guilty for complaining about my so called problems and for the comforts in my life. I could of done without the modern day part of things I dont think Elizabeth really added that much to the story except at the very end when she was told who her Grandmother really was. 4 stars

153. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood I know many people love this book but Im just not a big fan of dystopia stuff I guess. The book was very readable and just drilled the idea if life really came down to this just kill me off. 3 stars

just drilled the idea if life really came down to this just kill me off.

Ha ha ha! Yes, I hear you. Maybe that's why I'm not a big fan of dystopia either--a little bit is interesting, but I get tired of it.

154. Oliver Twist by Chalres Dickens. My 2nd Dickens book this year and never disappointed yet. The characters just comes alive plus the BBC movie was not bad either. 4 stars

155. The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins. I dont know why but I feel like this is cheating just alittle by being able to mark this one off the 1001 list but here it is. This poor woman and her decline into madness. This book backs up my theory If I am able to ask myself am I going insane then I am still at least okay. Since most people that are truely mad think they are normal. (Does that make sense at all) 4 stars

156. Home: A Novel by Marilynne Robinson. This book about family and relationship within the family really made me think about my own family and where did I fit in. 4 stars

157. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Ann Bronte. Really really enjoyed this book. Having read alittle about the lives of the Bronte Sister I know that Helens husband was actually the Bronte sisters brother. I admired Helen very much that she found the strength to take her young son and leave her husband and life of comfort to save her son from her husbands influences. But then had enough heart to go back and care for the husband that used and abused her so in his hour of sickness and death. 4 stars

Apr 18, 2014, 10:31 am

158. The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. Finally done the first half was full of boys romping around flashing swords, but the 2nd half really picked up with the story of Milady. the Musketeers is by far not The Count of Monte Cristo. The biggest question is why is the book called The Three Musketeers when there were actually 4???? 3 stars

159. He Knew He Was Right by Anthony Trollope Oh this book proves how a little bit of jealously and two people been hard headed can not only destory a marriage and a young family but make one lose their mind. I see where man and wife could have done to something to solve the problem. The wife could of told the gentleman not to call on her and stop all communication with him because that is what her husband wished or the husband could of went man to man and told the gentleman himself stop coming to my house and stop all communications with my wife. Over all 4 stars

160. Hard Times by Charles Dickens This is my 3rd Dickens this year and I just love his characters and the names he gives them. Hard times falls on all of us poor or riche, good or evil. But at the end of the day everyone reaps what they sow in life. 4 stars

Working 2 jobs makes it all the more impressive that you've read so many great books this year. Plugging along is all any of us can do - hopefully the 2nd job is a temporary situation and you'll be able to get back to normal soon.
