This thread is to go along with the July 2013 TIOLI challenge to read a book whose cover pictures an animal also seen on the 2013 National Book Festival poster. During the month, please post a picture of your "charming animal" book cover on this thread. If you need help with posting, let us know, and someone will help you out.
At the end of the month, we'll have a secret vote for the most charming animal on our book covers. Only one very small prize will be awarded. The book with the winning animal must have been COMPLETED before month's end.
No book covers with animals not on that poster are allowed on this thread or in this challenge!!
By the way, I thought that this animal book cover idea was great because norabelle414 not only is spearheading the LibraryThing Meet-up for the National Book Festival but she is also a bona fide FONZ (Friends of the National Zoo) volunteer. Please come to Washington this September to meet her!

Here is a larger, more clear close-up of the same poster.

I'll be reading Wesley the Owl by Stacey O'Brien.

COMPLETED ... is eligible for the charming animal award because this was a shared read.

The cover of David Quammen's Spillover features a mandrill, which is a different type of monkey than appears on the poster. I hope it's okay, though. He won't give anyone competition for the charm contest, I promise:
6SqueakyChu
I'll take any kind of monkey... :)
7kidzdoc
I see an alligator or crocodile in the poster, on the left side between the monkey above and the elephant below. My copy of A Season in the Congo by Aimé Césaire has a reptile with a similar appearance on the cover. Does this book count?
8SqueakyChu
I just now discovered that I forgot to mention that alligator (or crocodile) and have already added it to the list on the main thread. Be on the lookout for any other escaped animals! :)
You book sure does count!!

Thanks, Madeline! I'll see the play in London next month, so I'll read the script afterward.
10SqueakyChu
We've got some real charmers here already, haven't we? ;)
11kidzdoc
Another question: my copy of Contagion: How Commerce Has Spread Disease has a rodent on the cover, which could be a mouse but is probably a rat. There is definitely a mouse on the poster, which looks too cute to be a rat. What do you think?
12SqueakyChu
> 11
Darryl,
The rodent pictured on the poster is most likely a mouse, but we don't know for sure. Your book cover rodent seems more likely to be a rat. However, both mice and rats spread disease...so we can't be 100% sure what's on the book cover. :D
I'll say you can use a mouse or a rat.
Again...another charmer! ;)
Here's the caveat. If you choose your "poster rodent" to be a rat, you may not choose another book with a mouse on the cover for this challenge. So there!! :)

Ha!
15SqueakyChu
So...where are all the charming animals (i.e. like on the poster)?
16lahochstetler
I can't compete with Wesley, but this one is pretty. Butterfly on Tapestry of Fortunes ***COMPLETED***
17SqueakyChu
> 17
Ahhhh! A charmer, for sure! :)
Anyway, Wesley's out because I have to disqualify myself from this challenge because I'm collecting the votes. However, if anyone decides to match my book, then Wesley's fair game (no pun intended).

To make voting easier, could all of you who finish your books on this thread, add a note to your post that the book has been COMPLETED. If you forget to do that, it's okay, though.
19Megi53
Isn't there a pelican on a branch near the top right of the poster -- near the cockatiels? I don't have a copy yet, but was thinking of finally reading The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl.
20SqueakyChu
It is a pelican! How did I leave that one off, too?! I'm glad all of you have better yes than I do. :)
21SqueakyChu
Now, here's another idea for this challenge. Note that Megi53's book cover has two different qualifying animals on it. Therefore (for this challenge only), a second person can match a book with a different animal! In that way, two challengers cab both be eligible for the very small prize (and also have a matched book!) if your animal is voted the most charming at the end of the month.

Hi
I'm new to TIOLI. Feel free to steer me straight.
How about Alligator by Lisa Moore COMPLETED
How do I post a picture of the cover?
My copy of Flowers for Algernon has a super cute mouse on it. I don't think I'll be re-reading it in July but somebody else might want to.

I was beginning to wonder if I'd ever find a book to suit this challenge or would have to cheat and use one of the Popular penguin books. Anyway this is one I've been wanting to read for a while and I just noticed that there is a largish monkey on the rampage on the cover of this one.

To get the pointed brackets to save, you can't use them in your explanation.
You have to use

in place of the first pointed bracket.

Saving the pointed brackets themselves changes them (as you found out!).

Finally found a book with a qualifying animal on the cover:)
India: A History by John Keay - I'm not sure if they can be called charming but there are elephants!
Image removed - book not completed:(
Fortunately it has a Y at the end of the title so has been moved to TIOLI 1 for August.

The animal on this book is a beaver. I was wondering about that! :)

COMPLETED ... but NOT in contest (so I won't enlarge this picture)!
The book is Library Mascot Cage Match (weird title!) by Bill Barnes and Gene Ambaum.
I'm pretty sure it was @MDGentleReader who left this book in my Little Free Library #7720. Thank you so much!! The book is really funny.

Update
I was just looking at the wiki and realized there are more entries to this contest than just what's on this thread.
First of all, Wesley the Owl is in this contest because that was a shared read. So I was not the only person to have COMPLETED that book.
However, if a shared read wins, only one prize will be awarded...and that will go to the first person to list the shared read (but is someone other than me!).
I'm going to try to post pictures of the COMPLETED that are not yet up on this thread. If you have already voted, you may change your vote up until midnight of August 5, 2013.

I'm looking forward to receiving your three votes (per challenger). Your three votes per challenger can be changed at any time until the contest ends.

Are we still allowed only one vote, now that the contest has opened up? :)
ETA: That whole picture between the text on the cover in #31 is meant to be an owl; a little abstract, perhaps, but an owl.

Never mind, Liz. I was looking at the wrong cover. You've got a good picture of that book up already.
Let's change to three votes per person.
Those of you who have already voted can add two votes to your first choice or vote three entirely new votes. I hope I don't get too confused tallying this up. Anyhow, this will now make for a more interesting contest.

No. I know it's an owl. I was looking at the wrong cover elsewhere (one without an owl, of course!). I thought my eyes were either going bad or missing the owl. I did see a penguin on that other book cover, though! :)

I'm glad I'm not this confused for all the rest of the things I do here on the TIOLI challenges. Heh!

Heh! I was thinking that my cover must be like one of those abstract games, where you have to find an image within a bigger picture - and then when you have, you can't NOT see it. :)

Has there been a winner announced yet? I got back from vacation too late to vote, but for "charming", I love the little elephant (@67) on The One and Only Ivan and the snail (@52) on The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating and (@49) the squirrel on Miss Suzy. My very favorite charming little animal is the mouse (@25) on The Mousewife.
