Show both original and edited times in Talk headers

This was requested way back when Talk was revamped (the link is taking longer to find than I want to devote), and again with the new design (hah! found this one: http://www.librarything.com/topic/152211#4009018). It used to be that Talk posts displayed the original time in the header, and the edited time at the bottom, and I agree this wasn’t pretty, but removing the original time altogether wasn’t an ideal solution. A suggestion was to keep the edited date as is, but show the original date with a click. I’d much prefer to see BOTH at a glance. The original date gives continuity to the thread; the edited date is generally secondary, though useful to know. Here’s an example of a problem situation: http://www.librarything.com/topic/136710#3379302 . Last year I edited a bunch of posts on my garden thread because I changed the photo source. This year I’ve been referring to the thread frequently for comparison. Fortunately I thought to tack the original date onto each message, but I’d really like to see it on the right as I scroll down the page.

I think Tim was heavily against showing both, and I can understand why.

Perhaps as a compromise position we could have the original post time in the header (if I have to pick only one, that's going to be it) and a little icon that indicates it's been edited.

Then mousing over as well as clicking (for the mobile devices) could show the edit date.

Really, only two people care? Is everyone else busy playing with the new Home page?

It doesn't really bother me. Maybe I've wondered about the original timestamp a few times, but never so much that I didn't forget about the curiosity as soon as I looked away from the "edited" notation (or triangulated a general idea based on prior/following posts).

If it were simple enough, some way to do a hovering tooltip (like the abbreviation notation, I guess?) with the original would be better than nothing, but it doesn't seem like a priority to me.

I wouldn't necessarily interpret the silence to mean nobody else cares. It may just mean that others think you did a good enough job stating the need. I didn't bump this RSI because it's personally not yet been an "issue" for me, but I can definitely see how it would be useful to see both, so I do support it.

Yeah, a lot of people tend not to chime in when their comment would be "Yeah, that would be nice" - they're not passionate enough about it to say "yes this is very important", and they don't disagree, so they just nod and move on.

It would be nice to have both but I can live without it.

And the fact that simple uncontroversial ideas tend to get ignored is precisely why we need an RSI tracker like the bug tracker.

Yes, I certainly wouldn't oppose this. But I've been around on LT long enough to have stopped expecting any LT time stamp making any real sense to me at all. I happen to live in a very different time zone, so as far as I'm concerned it's all yadayada.

Didn't you get the memo about being able to set your time zone and the talk headers reflecting that?

There are a couple of posts here in Talk that I go back and add new things to as I come across them, and since they're the last post in the thread, I have no idea what date I originally posted. That would be the main usefulness of this RSI for me, I think.

Nah, but I'm I've studied history and archaeology. Juggling around centuries is easier (for me) than dealing with time zones. I could probably deal with anything like that more easily than the "couple of hours" difference.

Never mind though, I'm not complaining, it's probably just some consequence of me having set my browser to delete all cookies at the end of any session. That's my choice.

Yeah. I’m not expecting instant gratification, and even minor requests occupy time (which I realize is devoted elsewhere at the moment), but this was semi-agreed to some time ago, and it’d be nice to have a category for such things for when Tim et al happen to be in the area, just as there are sudden bursts of bug fixes. RSI is such a scramble that I don’t know where the original complaint is; probably buried in a long new features comment thread from when this was actually a new issue, not a longstanding irritation.
