You're probably going to have to wait until we discover where the other Little Free Libraries are located. Only about 1/4 of those that exist are mapped.

It sounds as if the one in Rhode Island is either poorly maintained or not maintained at all. I'll post a comment to that LFL page here on LT. Maybe some BookCrossers might be kind enough to stock it.

Are you talking about the one on 164 Brown Street in Providence?

6Chatterbox
Dec 25, 2013, 8:11 pm

Yup, I think so -- at any rate, it's on College Hill. I checked it out back in August or September.

7SqueakyChu

Here's another one I just added to the LT data base. Are you anywhere near Cranston, Rhode Island?

http://www.wpri.com/news/street-stories/street-stories-unique-library-offers-a-l...

That's a shame, Suz. There are quite a few near me. Zoe, Mark, and I did a tour of a few of them when they were here.

I've only found one ever that was not stocked (I found out later that it was being waterproofed and insect proofed. It was stocked afterward) and one that was nonexistent (I found out later that the entire box had been stolen). All of the others have been great. They're really cute to see in person.

I also read an online article about a few Little Free Libraries that have had their entire inventories stolen. I guess people think they're going to sell the books? To prevent that, I label all of my books with BookCrossing labels.

8Chatterbox
Dec 25, 2013, 8:19 pm

I've seen the pics, Madeline; look cute when with books!

Cranston isn't that far, but not really reachable without a car. Certainly not someplace I would venture on multiple buses without a definite need to go there.

9SqueakyChu
Edited: Dec 25, 2013, 8:23 pm

I'll keep you posted. I know that the rest of the LFLs will eventually be mapped. I'm hoping it will be sooner rather than later. We've got about 2,600 identified on LT (and maybe a few more on the LFL website map). There are really closer to 10,000 of them.

>16 rosalita: It was too good to pass up, eh what?

I am vexed beyond endurance. The terrible people at Amazon have put on sale the Kindle edition of a book I finally broke down and bought. Nos4A2 is $1.99 today. Some evil-hearted bureaucrat, no doubt on loan to Amazon from the IRS or the DEA, saw the "Shipped" message in my account and clicked the "Super One-Day Deal" button to make me gnash my teeth.

What? What do you mean it's not all about me? Of course it is, don't be ridiculous.

18UnrulySun
Dec 29, 2013, 11:35 am

Picked that one up this morning, Richard. Amazon does price match within 7 days I think, so it might be worth a call!

Also on the daily deal are several of Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole books.

19richardderus
Dec 29, 2013, 12:08 pm

>18 UnrulySun: Oh wow, I didn't know that! But I bought the tree book of Nos4A2, as I'm **highly** resistant to non-special-deal Kindle books.

20rosalita
Dec 29, 2013, 12:09 pm

Oh dear, Richard, I'm afraid it might be my fault, or rather Mark's. You see, I was talking about planning to re-read The Shining before I read Doctor Sleep, which I had picked up in a previous Kindle sale. Then Amazon put The Shining on sale, and Mark mentioned that it would be good to also read NOS4A2 before I read Doctor Sleep because there is apparently a reference to it. Then today, there it is on sale! I think someone at Amazon is reading Mark's thread.

>3 SqueakyChu: What a great idea! Thanks for sharing that, Madeline! There are a lot of LFLs in the Denver area, but none in Aurora. Once we find a place we want to stay for awhile, I'm going to see about starting one.

I snagged five $1.99 ebooks (including Doctor Sleep and the Feist book and 3 Georgette Heyers) thanks to Richard Derus's tip the other day. Yay me.

25Storeetllr
Edited: Dec 29, 2013, 4:39 pm

Great! Thanks! Guess I missed it on the website and on LT's "local" page.

It's a little far from me, but I'll go visit it, bring some books I've been meaning to give away. Aurora's pretty big and can use more than just one, though, so my hope to start another one remains.

ETA Okay, I just checked, and it's not that far from me. Only 4 miles. Can't wait till the snow melts on the sidestreets of my subdivision so I can take the car out and drive over.

It was just added to the LFL website recently, and I just now added it to the LT website. That's the problem. :/

27Storeetllr
Dec 29, 2013, 4:42 pm

I'm going to find my BookCrossing labels. I like the idea of labelling the books going to the LTLs. Besides helping prevent stealing, maybe people will check the books in to the BC site so they can be tracked. I find that fascinating!

Actually very few books are journaled after they are taken, but when they are, it's really fun. For UK readers who use Epub ebooks (or can cope with converting them to another format) the Hive Network - http://www.hive.co.uk/ - is a good alternative source of ebooks. It is linked to independent bookshops. I bought several Georgette Heyer detective novels for 81p each yesterday. One thing to be wary of is that the same ebook is often available at different prices. You will probably want to choose the cheaper price!

Some surprising sudden price drops

I just bought 7 books at 99p each and 1 at £1.52, including 3 of the Booker shortlist which I already had from the library (all the shortlist except the Colm Toibin are available for 99p including The Luminaries! I was also pleased to get The Guts which is Roddy Doyle's latest addition to his Barrytown series, Bellman & Black and The Ocean at the end of the Lane.

Books on offer that I already have include Life after Life, Saints of the Shadow Bible and The Goldfinch (and £1.99 seemed like a bargain for such a new book until now). Saints was already less half the price I paid for it at £2.99 before the latest cut, grrrr (although I have at least read that one before any drops).

I wrote that and didn't post a few hours ago. Also on offer for 99p, Margaret Drabble, The Pure Gold Baby and more.

ETA: And another that might be of interest if you're looking for WW1 books - Max Hastings, Catastrophe: Europe Goes to War 1914

Glorious Misadventures by Owen Matthews
The Two Hotel Francforts by David Leavitt
Empress Dowager Cixi by Jung Chang (still)
Elizabeth of York by Alison Weir
Catastrophe: Europe Goes to War by Max Hastings
Return of a King by William Dalrymple
Identical by Scott Turow
Saints of the Shadow Bible by Ian Rankin

Hi! Today I learned through BookBub that John Verdon's Think of a Number is on sale for various e-readers (Kindle, Nook, iBooks, Sony) for $1.99 now. I read this book on a whim a couple years ago -- no LT recommendation, just thought it sounded good -- and found the premise of the mystery to be one of the more original ideas I'd seen in a long time of mystery reading. Some of the family drama didn't totally work for me, but the mystery itself was a real page-turner. (I gave it 4 stars.)

ETA re: Think of a Number -- I double-checked, and my review at the time I read it was much as I wrote above. But there was one note I'll pass along for more sensitive LT-ers, for what it's worth: "Note: this book is not for those easily offended by profanity. Mind you, it's not used gratuitously; it fit with the characters and circumstances. But there was at least one phrase that made me cringe a little, and I'm not usually bothered at all by rough language."

This month's US Kindle book sale list includes The Taliban Cricket Club, which I rather liked, as well as some recent faves, Dogstar Rising by Parker Bilal (which got my vote for best new mystery series of 2013), 1492 by Fernandez-Armesto and The Republic of Love by Carol Shields. I think these range from $1.99 to $2.99 or $3.99. There are a few other goodies that looked appealing amidst the general "mehness" of the list if you look carefully.

Also, for any residual Jeffery Archer fans, the Clifton saga, thus far, is $1.99 apiece.

Amazon's Kindle Store (US) has Turn of Mind by by Alice LaPlante for $1.99. The story is told from the POV of a woman stricken with early-onset Alzheimer's. I read this one and found it quite compelling.

The University of Chicago free e-book for February is I Feel So Good: The Life and Times of Big Bill Broonzy, about the great Chicago bluesman of the 1930's.

Nook's Daily deal is Dead Mountain: The Untold True Story of the Dyatlov Pass Incident by Donnie Eichar, for $1.99. It's about a hiking party who died mysteriously on a Russian mountaintop in 1959.

A while back I found a website called NoiseTrade, which offered downloads of free music by all kinds of artists, mostly up-and-coming. The idea is that it is a platform for musicians to offer free music in hopes of catching fans who will later buy their stuff (and of course, collect email addresses for later direct marketing, which I have to say I haven't gotten a whole lot of). It's always free but there's a button on each download page so you can leave a "tip" if you want.

Today I got an email from them announcing that they are branching out into books, using the same model — free downloads of e-books, the option of leave a "tip" if you want, the ability to embed pages or share them on Facebook, Twitter — or LibraryThing!

I have only glanced through the book selections briefly, but there appears to be a mix of fiction and non-fiction and a decent selection for a new site. Most authors I have not heard of, but Cory Doctorow has a number of books listed. Anyway, if you're interested you can check it out here:

I'll probably get it, since it's free, but I was just wondering. One of them is Lincoln's Melancholy: How Depression Challenged a President and Fueled His Greatness by Joshua Wolf Shenk, for $1.99. I read it a while back and gave it 4 1/2 stars, and the overall rating on LT is just over 4 stars. Black Boy is Richard Wright's wrenching and frightening tale of growing up in a world that hates more than it loves a child whose one besetting sin is his skin color. Worth your eyeblinks even after a half-century of progress. $2.99

And on a completely different plane of cultural existence comes Miss Timmins' School for Girls, a murder mystery-ish magical mystery tour of India forty years ago. It's a fun-house mirror world in many ways, British missionaries and small-town India and sex-drugs-rock'n'roll and fish out of water coming of age tale...and it's just as easy to read and savor as anyone could want. Unchallenging pleasure reading for $1.99, all formats.

Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M. is the story of Breakfast at Tiffany's, the film, as told by the makers, the movers, and the shakers involved in it. I'm a hopeless Hepburnian, and this book brought me a lot of pleasure.

Collected Stories of Carol Shields...well, you like her already or you don't, but if you've never dipped in the waters this is the time and the way to do it. Two bucks! Who *cares* if you hate it!

Knocked Up: The Shooting Script is what it says. I read screenplays and shooting scripts like I take painful shots. They're teaching tools. And this movie didn't even raise a smile off of me. But it made a zillion bucks at the box office, so it pays to pay attention to the how....

Sale books alert!

By Myself and Then Some is Lauren Bacall's memoir. It's $1.99 on all ereaders and quite appealingly name-droppy, as one would expect.

THE COMPLETE NOVELS OF GEORGE ELIOT yes, complete!, as in "all of 'em" complete, are 99¢! I about had an attack. It's Kindle only.

Isabel Allende's Island Beneath the Sea is $1.99 on Kindle, and while I'm no fan of the book, it's got some interesting things to say.

Now seriously ladies and gentlewomen. Who here doesn't enjoy a mystery? Agatha Christie's first Tommy and Tuppence book, the only realistic detectives she ever wrote about!, is The Secret Adversary and it too is a mere 99¢ today! Kindle only, apparently.

To my surprise, James Michener's epic Hawaii is 99¢ today as well, on Kindle...Michener moved to my hometown, Austin, when he was researching and writing Texas and a craze for his books gripped the whole place. I read this in one summer week and remember it most fondly.

I'm all in favor of recognizing the wrongs done to people in the past, under different laws and different codes of "morality." But the story behind the recent pardon granted posthumously to Turing is as queasy-making as his original persecution for the "crime" of being gay.

>181 richardderus: well said, Lord Quirk, indeed.

Well, at least the pardon didn't involved hormone therapy. Queasy making indeed. I had not read the details of the pardon, but almost mentioned the pardon when I mentioned the book. Much better to not have enforced a bad law in the first place. Far too late for that, though.

Us Kindle deals I succumbed to today:

The Fifth Witness is one of Michael Connelly's Lincoln Lawyer series. I'm a fan of the Harry Bosch books, and frankly can't wait for the new Prime series, but Connelly's a good procedural writer and all his stuff to date has made me happy I've read it. $2.99? Sign me up.

Lisa Scottoline isn't quite as familiar to me, I've read maybe one or two, but $1.99 for Final Appeal sounded like a safe bet.

208richardderus
Mar 28, 2014, 1:39 pm

Another sale! All ereaders can, in the US and Canada (it looks to me like that), get a $1.99 copy of the gripping and very sad non-fiction tale Last Hours on Everest by Graham Hoyland. I'm fascinated by Everest stories.

And on Kindle only, War and Peace illustrated with period artwork and "formatted for the Kindle" (ie, file effed around with so you can see the illos) is a whopping 99¢.

Today I'm completely bulleted!

The Secret of Chanel No. 5 by Tilar Mazzeo is one of the microhistories, the tight close-up looks at a slice of world culture that I so enjoy. I know this author wrote The Widow Clicquot some time ago, and that wasn't the best-reviewed book; but like that subject, this one sounds too intriguing to miss! $2.99 on all ereaders.

Also $2.99 on all ereaders is Drama, a "personal history" by the delightful John Lithgow. I don't have any idea what the difference is among personal history, memoir, or autobiography, but I have so enjoyed all the Lithgow performances I've seen that I can't say no to this.

Today's book-crack is aimed at mystery addicts: Louise Penny's Still Life, first in her Three Pines-set series featuring Inspector Gamache is only $2.99 for US Kindle users.

I'm deeply addicted to this series. This first book isn't anywhere near as polished or well-made as the later entries in the series are, but that's to be expected, isn't it? And it's not bad at all, just not as smooth as later ones.

There is quite a bit on offer from indie publishers including Salt (fiction and poetry), Parthian, Europa Editions, Daunt books reprints (several are also VMCs). Non fiction by Muriel Spark - a book on Mary Shelley and a collection of essays.

A bio of P L Travers, Mary Poppins She Wrote

The Lives of Tao
The Deaths of Tao
Two novels by one of the nicest guys ever to write science fiction are each $1.99 on US Kindles. They're snarky fun books, and even those poor benighted souls who don't like SF should read them.

Flight Behavior is a good Barbara Kingsolver novel for $1.99 on US Kindles.

Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter (which I hated but everyone else seems to like a lot) is $1.99 today on US Kindles. Personally, I think he should pay you, but YMMV.

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is $2.99!!!!!!!!! *fanboy squee*

One of those dreadful, treacly Mitch Albom things is on sale, too, but I can't bring myself to type any more about it. *shudder*

Guilty Confession Time: I read Hazardous Duty, first of the Squeaky Clean mystery series, in a few hours. Then I bought the rest. They're silly, frothy fun tales about a crime-scene cleaner who solves crimes. The first one is free.

I feel like a crack merchant handing out samples.

Lastly, a flawed memoir with enough good points for me to recommend spending 99¢ on it: State-Sponsored Sex and Other Tales of International Misadventure isn't gonna win any Pulitzers. It will, if taken in doses, make you snicker. Many days that's enough.
