OK, I'm 32 minutes early, but I can't wait to get started!
Like a lot of folks, I'm reading Bleak House by Charles Dickens for the Group Read.
Also reading an ARC of Defy by Sara B. Larson which I will likely finish tonight/this morning.
Oh! Only 31 minutes until 2014!
Edited HTML tag, and now only 30 minutes!

>3 laura_88: Oh I've heard that it's good, looking forward your review !
6cbl_tn
I started Fer-de-Lance last night. I'm also reading Bleak House and The Colony of New Netherland, which will both take me most of the month to finish. My current audio book is The Namesake.
7lsh63
I am enjoying The Black Book, and Doc. I think
I would like to get caught up with the Rebus series, but I don't want to overload and read them back to back.
I am also going to try to do the Bleak House group read.

I started The Eight by Katherine Neville a couple of weeks ago for my first book, knowing that between the holidays and a family situation I wouldn't finish before the year started. I'm about half-way through.
10Helenliz
Like most people, I'm making my way through Bleak house.
Also on the go I have Raising Steam and The White War, because there's nothing like having bit of variety.

Happy New Year (10 hours and 40 minutes ago, haha)! I started my first book of 2014 shortly after midnight: The Impersonator by Mary Miley.
12rabbitprincess
In Scotland at the moment with Nigel Tranter's The Path of the Hero King. Robert the Bruce is in a part of the country I visited! Yay!
13LittleTaiko
Add me to the list of Bleak House readers. Am also reading Tenth of December by George Saundersand Tonight I Said Goodbye by Michael Koryta.

15mamzel
Another Bleak House reader here. I will also listening to the audio version of The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon in my car, an ER win.
16hailelib
I've started Gateway and A Nation of Immigrants.
17sturlington
I can see Bleak House is popular, as it showed up on the top 10 list of what members are reading this morning! I'm not a Dickens fan, so I am opting to start the year with Swamplandia by Karen Russell for the GeoCAT. That's as far as I have gotten in my planning for the month.
PS Happy New Year everybody!
PS Happy New Year everybody!
18GingerbreadMan
Happy new year everyone! Still not quite finished wrapping things up over at the 2013 challenge, but I'm officially here now, at least. Starting my year with In the night garden. (no, not the one with Iggle Piggle and the pontipines)
19OldDan
I am currently reading Roughing It In The Bush Or Life In Canada By Susanna Moodie for the Geo Cat (Canadian) AND Shards of Honor By Lois McMaster Bujold for the year-long Vorkosigan Saga. Also plan on reading Bleak House by Charles Dickens but better get these other two read and returned to the library in due time before checking any more out.
20christina_reads
I'm about to start Just Like Heaven by Julia Quinn.
21thornton37814
My first read of 2014 is The Girl on the Cliff by Lucinda Riley.
22rosalita
I've finished my first book of 2014, The Burglar on the Prowl. I will move on tomorrow to starting The Taking of Pelham One Two Three and Death Comes for the Archbishop.
23cammykitty
I'm reading Suite Francaise and remembering there was a group read of it a few years ago. Wishing I was reading it with a group! All the characters are generally self-serving, and I'd love to talk about it.
24VictoriaPL
Happy New Year to all!! I'm reading Purity of Blood by Arturo Perez-Reverte. It doesn't really fit my challenge, but I swiped it off my TBR shelf in desperation last night.
25BookLizard
24> It doesn't fit your challenge? Wouldn't it fit under Historical Book or Book Dealing with Religion? I haven't read it myself, but from the description, it sounds like you could make it fit if you wanted.
26virginiahomeschooler
I'm reading Fellowship of the Ring and loving it. I stayed up past 2am reading last night because I just couldn't put it down.
27christina_reads
I'm beginning Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding.
28dudes22
>9 .Monkey.: - Poly - Although I'm enjoying it, I'm not sure this was the best time to read it. As busy as it's been, I don't think I'm following it and the multitude of characters and plots and getting all the connections that are probably there in the short bursts of time I've had to read. Hoping to find a chunk of time today (took a snow day) to settle down with a cup of tea and make some progress.
I've also started my Jan random book Climbing the Stairs by Padma Venkratraman.

>25 BookLizard: BookLizard, I supposed it could go under Historical. I was thinking non-fiction for that, but I'll consider it! Thanks.
30BookLizard
I'm almost finished with Heat Stroke by Rachel Caine, the second book in the Weather Warden series.
31christina_reads
I'm about to start Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay.
32RidgewayGirl
Just finished Sorry by Gail Jones. I'm also reading The Imposter Bride by Nancy Richler for the GeoCAT and The Price of Blood by Declan Hughes for the RandomCAT and the MysteryCAT. I'm disappointed that the protagonist is an Irish American who moved to Ireland rather than an Irish guy who emigrated in the other direction, because then it would have been a CATtrick.
33ALWINN
Im on the wagon train for Bleak House and really enjoying it so far. Also planning on starting Whome the Bell Tolls and Swann's Way in the next couple of days for group reads.
34DeltaQueen50
I am reading Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold for the Vorkosigan Group Read, and also, One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson for the MysteryCat.
35lsh63
I'm in the midst of several books right now: Home of The Braised, Fear Nothing, Brooklyn, and I'm also working on Bleak House in bits and pieces.
The first two books mentioned were released today Home of the Braised is the latest White House chef mystery, and Fear Nothing, is the lastest in Lisa Gardner's series featuring police detective DD Warren.
Brooklyn is for my GeoCat, and I'm trying to discipline myself with Bleak House for the group read.
Whew!

Just getting started on Whiskey Rebels by David Liss and hoping to make more progress with Bleak House.
38cbl_tn
I'm reading A Room of One's Own. I'm right on track with Bleak House to finish at the end of the month. Still listening to The Namesake but hoping to finish it in the next couple of days.
39BookLizard
Just started Moon Over Soho, the second book in the Rivers of London series.
40DeltaQueen50
I'm reading my grandson's choice for me, A Cat In the Window by Derek Tangye and have just started One of Ours by Willa Cather.
41Roro8
I am reading Footprints of Lion which my daughter picked off the bookshelf for me. It is a sequel to a book I read a couple of years ago.
42psutto
having read a whole bunch of GNs I've finally started on my first book of 2014 - London Falling by Paul Cornell - lots of reviews owed on my thread though....
43Bjace
Judy, I'm reading One of ours, too. I'm enjoying it. I think reading Willa Cather is like listening to a story being told by a wise old woman. Also reading The ambassadors and am wondering why I'm subjecting myself to more Henry James. Also Murder in the museum of man which is a hoot so far.
44christina_reads
I'm reading Dear Mr. Knightley by Katherine Reay.
45DeltaQueen50
#43 - That's a great way of describing Willa Cather, Beth. I've avoided Henry James and don't see that changing anytime soon.
46mamzel
I finished Bleak House *happy dance* and have begun a book recommended by our bookstore as an adult book with special appeal for teens called The Bone Season.
47christina_reads
I've just started Fer-de-Lance, finally! :)
48cbl_tn
I'm reading Praisesong for the Widow and still working on Bleak House and the audio of The Namesake.
49cammykitty
I'm reading a book on dolphin training Lads before the wind and a short story collection Things Invisible to See.
50DeltaQueen50
I am just starting The Food of Love by Anthony Capella and The League of Frightened Men by Rex Stout.
51RidgewayGirl
I didn't really want to read Five Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink, but now that I've started it, I am having trouble getting daily tasks done and my SO claims I can't hear him while I'm reading it. The rest of the family, excepting pets, are leaving the house for a few hours this afternoon, so my plan is to read.
52dudes22
Don't you love it when you find a book like that? I was rather hesitant to read American Gods last year and it need up being one of my top reads of the year.
53thornton37814
I will begin Shadows on the Rock by Willa Cather tonight.
54christina_reads
About to begin Lexicon by Max Barry.
55rabbitprincess
Today I polished off Doctor Who and the Planet of the Spiders as an antidote to feeling bogged down in Bleak House.
>54 christina_reads:: I have Lexicon on the TBR and will be interested to hear what you think about it!
>54 christina_reads:: I have Lexicon on the TBR and will be interested to hear what you think about it!
56mamzel
I finished The Bone Season today and will finish A Christmas Hope by Anne Perry, an Early Reviewer book which I would have read earlier if I had received it before Christmas.
57sturlington
I just started The Burn Palace by Stephen Dobyns. He's a favorite author, the book was a birthday present, and so far, I'm enjoying it.
58christina_reads
@ 55 -- RP, so far I'm enjoying Lexicon and frankly finding it a bit creepy! I think this is a book that I'll have to read all the way to the end before I truly know what to think of it, if that makes sense. I will let you know when I reach a conclusion. :)
59BookLizard
I'm reading a book bullet from someone in this group. (I'll chew you out thank you personally on your thread later when I remember who did this to me.) And thanks for pointing out the similarities between Retribution Falls and Firefly - I probably would have reached that conclusion on my own, but now I can't help but picture Nathan Fillion as Frey. Not that that's a bad thing . . . no, not at all. ;-)
60christina_reads
@ 59 -- I think I have to take the blame credit for Retribution Falls, BookLizard! No harm in imagining Nathan Fillion as Frey, or really Nathan Fillion as anyone! His profile should be on coins.
61lsh63
I'm at a point in Bleak House where I am enjoying it a bit more. I'm also reading Six Years and Time's Witness.
62mamzel
I read a quick one at work - a YA book called Denied, Detained, Deported for the GeoCat challenge.
63cbl_tn
I just started Middling Folk: Three Seas, Three Centuries, One Scots-Irish Family for the GeoCAT. I'm still working on Bleak House and the audio of The Namesake.
64-Eva-
I've started The Cuckoo's Calling and it's a page-turner so far. Also listening to Dead Beat - Dresden is always a fun read.
65GingerbreadMan
I'm still immensed in Valente richness, now continuing with In the cities of coin and spice.
66psutto
still enjoying london falling & hoping to dedicate some time to it soon!
67christina_reads

68christina_reads

69DeltaQueen50
I am now reading The Tall Men by Will Henry and The Exploits and Adventures of Miss Alethea Darcy by Elizabeth Aston.
70LittleTaiko
Getting a small head start for Wodehouse month with Cocktail Time. Am also starting Ancillary Justice, Anne of Green Gables, and The Walled Flower.
71whitewavedarling
FINALLY finished the 500+ page Benjamin Britten, and halfway through Life of Pi (which I'm reading on the bus to and from work). Starting Songs for the New Depression now...
72leslie.98
I just discovered this thread... Let's see, I started the month by finishing up Alias Grace and The Child in Time which I had begun in December. I am also listening (still) to the audiobook of War and Peace which started in December. Then I read a short classic, Nightmare Abbey, and a couple of mysteries (The Rubber Band, Twelve Drummers Drumming, & Dog River Blues), followed by some children's stories by Oscar Wilde called The Happy Prince and Other Tales and reread The Phantom Tollbooth. Then some Russian poetry (in English!) by Anna Akhmatova and a Shakespeare play (Measure for Measure) and a reread of a favorite historical fiction, The Game of Kings…
Right now I am almost done with The Golden Notebook (but still only about 65% done with War and Peace).

I'm on the last one third or so ofBleak House and it is moving along at a brisk pace.I hope to finish on Monday.
77Helenliz
76> It certainly picked up in the final 1/3. I finished yesterday so am concentrating on Raising Steam lighter, both mentally & physically than the dickens was.
78RidgewayGirl
I'm in a mild reading lull, with several books underway, none of which is grabbing me, but none of which is bad enough to abandon. I'm taking a break for Dare Me by Megan Abbott. I know it'll be good.
79VictoriaPL
I am rewarded by not following Nancy Pearl's advice and sticking with Lorna Doone. 150 pages in and I am really beginning to enjoy it.
80DeltaQueen50
I am about to start The Death of Sweet Mister by Daniel Woodrell, who is an author I usually really like, so looking forward to this one. I am also reading The Passage by Justin Cronin and although I am only 60 pages in, I think I am going to really like this one as well.
81lsh63
I finallly finished Bleak House!!!!!!!! The last 300 pages moved very quickly. I'm not sure what's next, I was really concentrating on BH.
Judy, that is funny you mention The Passage, I tried to read it but couldn't get into it. Right Victoria? *****Waves*****

I've started Assassination Vacation yesterday, and it's moving briskly.
83VictoriaPL
Hi Lisa! ** waves **. Ah, The Passage.... looking forward to your thoughts Judy.
84psutto
having finished johannes cabal: the detective I'd best start the ARC I've just been sent, the waking engine by David Edison...
85rabbitprincess
Continuing my adventures with my favourite consulting detective in Sherlock: The Return of Sherlock Holmes. (Had to include the extra "Sherlock" in the touchstone to force it to display my edition, which is a TV tie-in.)
86sturlington
Now reading Gaudy Night. It's a reread, but I last read it so long ago that this may as well be a first read.
87clue
Yesterday I finished Songs of Willow Frost by Jamie Ford. I was greatly disappointed in it and pretty much scanned the last chapters. Tonight I have started By A Slow River by Philippe Claudel. After a couple of chapters I'm hooked by the beautiful writing.
88mamzel
I finished If on a Winter's Night a Traveler. I feel like I was playing twister in my head. Very cool! Ah, what to read next...
89DeltaQueen50
#81 & 83 - My trouble isn't getting into it, Lisa, but in putting it down!
90GingerbreadMan
After being peppered with stories within stories within stories in both volumes of The orphan's tales (and what a ride it's been!), I crave raw, crude realism. Now I'm reading Blattejävlar!, about serbian immigrants in a bad part of Ljubliana, which will also be my Slovenian read for the Europe Endless.
91RidgewayGirl
I've just finished Love in Infant Monkeys, a short story collection by Lydia Millet. I'm trying to finish up partially read books now instead of starting several new ones, which I am in the mood to do.

I've started The Shadowy Horses by Susanna Kearsley, but I'm having trouble deciding what category to put it in! I thought it would fit into historical fiction (since most of her other books do), but it looks like this one is set entirely in the present day. There's apparently some paranormal stuff (ghosts), so I could put it in fantasy....or there's a love story, so perhaps chick lit/romance would be a good fit? For anyone else who has read this, what would you suggest?
94dudes22
I've finished Something Old, Something New by Beverly Jenkins, the third book in the Blessings series. I don't know what's wrong with me this year but this is only my second finished book this year. I have a couple more going and should finish at least one of them before month end ( which is my book for the Random Cat). Haven't even started books for the other two Cats.
95leslie.98
I have finished another Rex Stout mystery - The Red Box…
96RidgewayGirl
I just finished Dare Me, Megan Abbott's killer book about high school cheerleaders. I knew it'd be good and it was!
I've started several new books, including July 1914 by Sean McMeekin and In the Forest by Edna O'Brien, which is based on the same incident that inspired Tana French's In the Woods.

97ALWINN
I just finished up Bleak House and I so loved it I have shed tears of sadness and joy. I need to start on For Whom the Bell Tolls and Swann's Way but I have a few others that calling my name so who knows I guess I will figure it out later on tonight.
98-Eva-
I started Johannes Cabal the Detective last night since @psutto just finished it and reminded me just how much I like the character - so far he's just as great as in the first book.
99dudes22
I keep forgetting to post here. I finished my book the Random Cat for Jan - Climbing the Stairs by Padma Venkatraman. I think I'll be starting Butcher's Hill tonight for my book for the January Mystery Cat. I'm running far behind this month. I might not even get to the GEO Cat.
100leslie.98
I read Travesties by Tom Stoppard, which I absolutely loved! Next: Vile Bodies, which will be a ROOT, fulfill one of my categories & starts with a V…
101BookLizard

105GingerbreadMan
I'm reading The graveyard book, which is okay so far.
106RidgewayGirl
I've finished Snow White Must Die by Nele Neuhaus, which was not good, and have started In the Forest by Edna O'Brien.
107leslie.98
Just finished the first of the Robot series by Isaac Asimov, The Caves of Steel. Very enjoyable, quick read...
109dudes22
I finished my January Mystery Cat book Butcher's Hill by Laura Lippmann. I'm starting my GEO cat book In the Skin of a Lion by Michael Ondaatje but I'm not sure I'll get it done by month-end.
110lsh63
I'm reading Winter of the Wolf Moon and hope to finish it tomorrow evening. I shouldn't be reading about cold, icy weather when it's been about 10 degrees or so most of the week, but I am enjoying the book!
I couldn't get into my January RandomCat Time's Witness not because the book isn't good, but the type is set very close together in an odd sort of font, it's a heavy hardback, etc.... So even with my specs I didn't get very far with it.

Lisa, I know your frustration. My eyes take a while to warm up in the morning, which is my best reading time -- I get up an hour before the kids so that I can read -- and if the book has too small a font, I can't read it then. It's the non-fiction and more substantial tomes that tend to have small print, so while my mind is up and ready to go, my eyes won't let me.
Meanwhile, I'm reading July 1914: Countdown to War by Sean McMeekin, which is dry, but certainly detailed and I'm starting to get into it. I'm breaking it up with Alexander McCall Smith's The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon. You can't get much lighter than that!

I'm still plugging away at The Letters of Nancy Mitford and Evelyn Waugh...hoping to finish it this month, but it will be a near thing!
113leslie.98
As I have posted at various places elsewhere on LT, I have finished my big fat classic - War and Peace. After that, I turned to something short & easy - a mystery novella audiobook by Bill Pronzini, The Booktaker.
114cbl_tn
After finishing Bleak House, I've moved on to something that's more of a page turner - Golden State by Michelle Richmond. I'm listening to Joy in the Morning with the resourceful Jeeves.
115leslie.98
>114 cbl_tn:
I listened to Joy in the Morning last month - love Wodehouse and the audiobooks are a great way to revisit them! Who is doing the narration on yours?

>115 leslie.98: Jonathan Cecil. Not my favorite narrator, but he's growing on me.
117DeltaQueen50
I am hoping to close out January with Hart of the Empire a historical fiction adventure that so far seems to be pretty run-of-the-mill. It's a sequel so the completist in me needs to finish it.
I am starting The Short Life & Long Times of Mrs. Beeton, but this one will likely carry over into February.

119clue
I usually keep one physical book and one ebook going at a time. I'm reading Anne of Green Gables on the Kindle. I finished Sweetness At The Bottom Of The Pie this morning and will start A Play of Isaac by Margaret Frazer next. I received this for SantaThing.
120mamzel
I finished Tatiana by Martin Cruz Smith and started The Picture of Dorian Gray for the OLOB group read.
