What are we reading in January 2014?

Edited: Dec 31, 2013, 11:30 pm

OK, I'm 32 minutes early, but I can't wait to get started!

Like a lot of folks, I'm reading Bleak House by Charles Dickens for the Group Read.

Also reading an ARC of Defy by Sara B. Larson which I will likely finish tonight/this morning.

Oh! Only 31 minutes until 2014!

Edited HTML tag, and now only 30 minutes!

I'm reading The Arabian Nights. Drawing Down the Moon, and All Wrapped Up by {Stephanie Pearl-Mcphee. So far, I'm enjoying all of 'em.

I am enjoying The Black Book, and Doc. I think
I would like to get caught up with the Rebus series, but I don't want to overload and read them back to back.

I am also going to try to do the Bleak House group read.

I started The Eight by Katherine Neville a couple of weeks ago for my first book, knowing that between the holidays and a family situation I wouldn't finish before the year started. I'm about half-way through.

I can see Bleak House is popular, as it showed up on the top 10 list of what members are reading this morning! I'm not a Dickens fan, so I am opting to start the year with Swamplandia by Karen Russell for the GeoCAT. That's as far as I have gotten in my planning for the month.

PS Happy New Year everybody!

Happy new year everyone! Still not quite finished wrapping things up over at the 2013 challenge, but I'm officially here now, at least. Starting my year with In the night garden. (no, not the one with Iggle Piggle and the pontipines)

>9 .Monkey.: - Poly - Although I'm enjoying it, I'm not sure this was the best time to read it. As busy as it's been, I don't think I'm following it and the multitude of characters and plots and getting all the connections that are probably there in the short bursts of time I've had to read. Hoping to find a chunk of time today (took a snow day) to settle down with a cup of tea and make some progress.

I've also started my Jan random book Climbing the Stairs by Padma Venkratraman.

Just finished Sorry by Gail Jones. I'm also reading The Imposter Bride by Nancy Richler for the GeoCAT and The Price of Blood by Declan Hughes for the RandomCAT and the MysteryCAT. I'm disappointed that the protagonist is an Irish American who moved to Ireland rather than an Irish guy who emigrated in the other direction, because then it would have been a CATtrick.

The first two books mentioned were released today Home of the Braised is the latest White House chef mystery, and Fear Nothing, is the lastest in Lisa Gardner's series featuring police detective DD Warren.

Brooklyn is for my GeoCat, and I'm trying to discipline myself with Bleak House for the group read.

Judy, I'm reading One of ours, too. I'm enjoying it. I think reading Willa Cather is like listening to a story being told by a wise old woman. Also reading The ambassadors and am wondering why I'm subjecting myself to more Henry James. Also Murder in the museum of man which is a hoot so far.

@ 55 -- RP, so far I'm enjoying Lexicon and frankly finding it a bit creepy! I think this is a book that I'll have to read all the way to the end before I truly know what to think of it, if that makes sense. I will let you know when I reach a conclusion. :)

I'm reading a book bullet from someone in this group. (I'll chew you out thank you personally on your thread later when I remember who did this to me.) And thanks for pointing out the similarities between Retribution Falls and Firefly - I probably would have reached that conclusion on my own, but now I can't help but picture Nathan Fillion as Frey. Not that that's a bad thing . . . no, not at all. ;-)

60christina_reads

I just discovered this thread... Let's see, I started the month by finishing up Alias Grace and The Child in Time which I had begun in December. I am also listening (still) to the audiobook of War and Peace which started in December. Then I read a short classic, Nightmare Abbey, and a couple of mysteries (The Rubber Band, Twelve Drummers Drumming, & Dog River Blues), followed by some children's stories by Oscar Wilde called The Happy Prince and Other Tales and reread The Phantom Tollbooth. Then some Russian poetry (in English!) by Anna Akhmatova and a Shakespeare play (Measure for Measure) and a reread of a favorite historical fiction, The Game of Kings

Right now I am almost done with The Golden Notebook (but still only about 65% done with War and Peace).

I've started The Shadowy Horses by Susanna Kearsley, but I'm having trouble deciding what category to put it in! I thought it would fit into historical fiction (since most of her other books do), but it looks like this one is set entirely in the present day. There's apparently some paranormal stuff (ghosts), so I could put it in fantasy....or there's a love story, so perhaps chick lit/romance would be a good fit? For anyone else who has read this, what would you suggest?

I'm reading Winter of the Wolf Moon and hope to finish it tomorrow evening. I shouldn't be reading about cold, icy weather when it's been about 10 degrees or so most of the week, but I am enjoying the book!

I couldn't get into my January RandomCat Time's Witness not because the book isn't good, but the type is set very close together in an odd sort of font, it's a heavy hardback, etc.... So even with my specs I didn't get very far with it.

Jan 30, 2014, 7:52 am

Lisa, I know your frustration. My eyes take a while to warm up in the morning, which is my best reading time -- I get up an hour before the kids so that I can read -- and if the book has too small a font, I can't read it then. It's the non-fiction and more substantial tomes that tend to have small print, so while my mind is up and ready to go, my eyes won't let me.

Meanwhile, I'm reading July 1914: Countdown to War by Sean McMeekin, which is dry, but certainly detailed and I'm starting to get into it. I'm breaking it up with Alexander McCall Smith's The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon. You can't get much lighter than that!

As I have posted at various places elsewhere on LT, I have finished my big fat classic - War and Peace. After that, I turned to something short & easy - a mystery novella audiobook by Bill Pronzini, The Booktaker.

After finishing Bleak House, I've moved on to something that's more of a page turner - Golden State by Michelle Richmond. I'm listening to Joy in the Morning with the resourceful Jeeves.

I listened to Joy in the Morning last month - love Wodehouse and the audiobooks are a great way to revisit them! Who is doing the narration on yours?

>115 leslie.98: Jonathan Cecil. Not my favorite narrator, but he's growing on me.

I am hoping to close out January with Hart of the Empire a historical fiction adventure that so far seems to be pretty run-of-the-mill. It's a sequel so the completist in me needs to finish it.

I am starting The Short Life & Long Times of Mrs. Beeton, but this one will likely carry over into February.

>116 cbl_tn: I have come to really like him in the Jeeves & Wooster books. I haven't heard anything else narrated by him, so I don't know how that would strike me.

I usually keep one physical book and one ebook going at a time. I'm reading Anne of Green Gables on the Kindle. I finished Sweetness At The Bottom Of The Pie this morning and will start A Play of Isaac by Margaret Frazer next. I received this for SantaThing.

I finished Tatiana by Martin Cruz Smith and started The Picture of Dorian Gray for the OLOB group read.
