One Quarter of our 2014 ROOT Challenge has us just slightly below pace. We can catch up.
I have placed a ★ for anyone who reached 3/12th of their goal. If anyone is 1/3 of their goal they got ★★, and two months ahead got ★★★ . This just signifies that you are on target to reach your goal if you keep up the same pace. Those without a ★ need to pickup the pace if we want to reach our goals.
Let's see the new Tickers sparkle with enormous proportions so that we dig deep and weed out those UNREAD BOOKS!
These tickers show the progress toward the group goal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like to ask for your assistance keeping the totals in 2014.
Anyone with the ° symbol next to their name still need to add their tickers to the thread or need to remember to put their total at the end of the month in the progress thread.
Please post your personal tickers in the ticker thread or post your monthly progress here at the end of the month so that I can gather the numbers in one thread as much as possible.
I try to keep up on the personal threads during the month, so having to revisit to gather numbers can be a bit time consuming if the system is slow. Any help is appreciated.
There are still tickers that are on individual threads that have not been posted to the ticker thread. PLEASE CONSIDER COPYING THE HTML TO THE TICKER THREAD TO HELP ME OUT.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are the totals for March. If anybody's number need adjustment, please let me know.
If your name is not on the list, I couldn't find your ticker or personal thread.
So, now, Ladies and Gentlemen, BOOK LOVERS, BIBLIOPHILES, BOOK HOARDERS - get out there and read those BOOKS!
Our goal for April is 1,738.

Hello there, Cheli! :) I ended the month with 28 ROOTs read, not 27 - but I still think I need to up my ROOT reading for April. Thanks for everything you do, Cheli :)
10majkia
Cheli, it is truly hard to wrangle bookies. Worse than cats. Thanks for trying so hard though!
11rubyandthetwins
Hi Cheli! :) My total is 'right on the money!' Thanks so much :)
12raidergirl3
Oh dear, I lost my star this month since I read no ROOTs last month. Must try better for April, and I have one that I should finish today or tomorrow that should have been done in March. Onward!
14MissWatson
Thanks for doing the numbers, Chèli! Off to start my April reading...
15lindapanzo
More than half of my expected reads in April will be ROOTS so, hopefully, I'll both get ahead of pace and contribute a few extras towards our total.
17avanders
>5 cyderry: Chèli - you're right, you work so hard! and we appreciate it :) Little slip-ups are bound to happen.. thanks for fixing!

Grrr. Lost my start because I only managed to read two ROOTs in March. Annoying, but I believe I'm bouncin back fast. At least I finished the first April ROOT: Leif Davidsen - Den ukendte hustru

I'm hoping that I will do well in April. I figure once I have my surgery on the 21st, that last week, I'll just be reclining and reading. I have 13 ROOTs on my schedule for April. Sure hope I can get them all done.
22rabbitprincess
Yay, fresh new April thread! :)

I finished my first ROOT for April The Tin Can Tree by Anne Tyler! :) Here's my link: https://www.librarything.com/topic/163437. Will update later on.

Sorry, I've been stumbling around learning how to manage my ticker. I had to create a new one finally. In the meantime, I've read 19 of my 45 old tomes!

I'm starting April with Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult. Then I have 2 library books coming which won't count as Roots.

Have a good recovery! And take time off from moderating if you need it. We may flounder around a bit, but we'll be ok!
37moonshineandrosefire
Well, I think I've jumped out in front of the pack - and it's only April 2nd! :) lol! I mean that I may have just erased my lag in ROOT reading! I received a bonanza of books in the mail this afternoon - 20 books at one time! 13 books were sent by a children's author who wants me to review her books. 12 books are from 2 separate series, and a standalone book that teaches children easy yoga poses. Two books were from another new author for me, and two other books that I've actually read before - but both have now won an award! I also received three interior decorating books from Bookmooch.
So far, I've read all 13 children's books and it only took me about half an hour! :)

Thank you all for your good wishes. I have all kinds of doctors appts. before the surgery just to clear me to have it. I figure sitting in waiting rooms, I'll get plenty of reading done!
39benitastrnad
I finished 4 ROOTS this last month. No ticker.
I have been out of touch with my computer for about 2 weeks so didn't keep up with the threads too much. Sorry to hear about your surgery. But sitting in hospitals and such does accommodate reading. At least it did for me during the first quarter of this year.

48benitastrnad
I made a mistake on my March total and I actually have 6 titles for that month. That should help our average! I wasn't on-line as much and so spent more time reading. That was the one good thing about all that time spent in the hospital.
49streamsong
Yay! First ROOT done for April and tickers updated.

Hello there, everyone! :) Well, I just finished my 44th ROOT yesterday (I'll be updating my list later on today!) :)
Anyway, I was doing a little spring cleaning yesterday afternoon, and discovered two big boxes of books in my closet that I had absolutely no idea were there! LOL :) Plus, Mareena and I are off to our library's perpetual book sale this afternoon. (I pray that there'll be enough room to fit our most recent influx of books! :))

Wow! I finally finished The Brothers Karamazov. Much of it brilliant, but enough that was irritating that I really dragged my heels on this. Short books for me for a while.
62.Monkey.
I agree on the brilliant, not so much on the irritating. :P I read most of it while on vacation for 5 days a few years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
63ipsoivan
Gah! I wish I had gotten through it in 5 days. It felt like an eternity -- I think it was about 5 weeks, as I really had to convince myself to read more than a few pages at a time. That doesn't sound too complimentary to Doestoevsky, but for over half the book, I was seriously counting the pages. I'm stubborn though, and I kept at it, and I'm glad I did.
The court scenes were brilliant, and I found the whole brothers-as-Russia (including Smerdyakov) to be a fascinating device, but on the whole, I'm glad that one's down.

Two more ROOTS for me, bringing my total to 15. The Last Detective, the first in a good mystery series, andThe Last Chronicle of Barset, which is the final volume of an Anthony Trollope series.
I'll be reading some newer books for a week or so, then back to clearing some of the backlog.

Fiiiiiinally finished a book last night - Shattered Pillars by Elizabeth Bear. It's not that I wasn't enjoying it, just that I couldn't manage to focus, so it took me about three times as long as it should have to read. Oh well, at least that means I have the new one waiting for me as soon as I'm ready.

Congratulations to both daughterofheaven and SqeakyChu - very well done! :) I'm not quite sure that I'm doing as well as I was expecting to at the beginning of the month. I'm still hoping to maybe read 3 more ROOTs before the end of April - but I sure swallowed up those three stars pretty darn quick! :) LOL!
Anyway, my first ROOT of the month was The Sea Wife by Holly Cook, which I finished on Sunday, April 6th. And tonight - Thursday, April 17th - I finished my second ROOT, Dinosaur Lake by Kathryn Meyer Griffith. Now, I'm off to update my personal tickers!

I just finished Skylark, another great NYRB novel. All group and personal tickers updated.

I feel like I just won the lottery! I just updated the main ticker and now it shows 25%! We're exactly on target! I'm so excited...my kids are just lucky that I'm not waking them up to babble about how it was my update that put us at the 25 mark!
I often remind myself of Toad from The Wind in the Willows. Can't you just see me, thumping my chest and saying, "My update!

By the way, I did read some books, lol. Forgot to mention them. I enthused at length on my thread about Library: An Illustrated History and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Also deserving of mention are A Strange Enchantment by Mabel Esther Allan, a fine book about a teenage girl in England who joins the Women's Land Army (becomes a farmer) at the beginning of World War II. Educational, interesting, and with a dash of romance, I really enjoyed this unique view of the war years.
And, Rodzina a book by Karen Cushman about an orphan train rider. I don't know why I put off reading this book for so long; once I started it, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The author did a nice job of scaling the emotions back enough to give younger readers the gritty realism without traumatizing them. If this had been my first introduction to the orphan train riders, it would have done a good job at making me want to read more.

Congrats on all the reading done here, but I'm sorry to contradict >99 Merryann: Merryann: At the end of April we should be at 33% because then 4 months of the year have gone by and 4/12=1/3=33% (appr.). At the of March we should have been on 25% ;-) But nevertheless, we're all doing great, so keep reading everyone!

I'm updating with two ROOTs, Perdido Street Station - from before the beginning of time, and the White Lioness from 2012. That's ROOT 35 and 36. Updating all tickers.

Maybe at the end of the month we will have reached our group target? So people, let's got some more reading done, so we all get the great feeling of what it means to be on target!

Well not everyone updates the group ticker (myself included), so until cyderry does the monthly tabulations we really don't know exactly where we stand, anyway.

I just finished ROOT # 8 Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay and I'm well on track for April ROOTreading. I liked this book a lot. In the beginning it took some getting used to to the way Kay alternates descriptive parts with parts that take place in reality (not our reality but the reality of Tigana). But in the end the book swept me away into tears. So
.
I started in another book and another ROOT by Guy Gavriel Kay - Een lofzang voor Arbonne

Going to update both the group tickers!

I just read The Night Workers by Alvin Schwartz. This nonfiction picture book will not count as a ROOT, but I mention it here as a great example of photographic history. Ulli Steltzers pictures are of real people working at their actual jobs, circa 1966 and Mr. Schwartz' words are just right.
110moonshineandrosefire
I finished my 47th ROOT on Friday, April 18th - The Murder of King Tut by James Patterson and Martin Dugard! :) A ROOT that's been on my TBR pile since October of 2012 - I can't believe I waited so long to read it. :) Here is the link to my thread: https://www.librarything.com/topic/163437

I finished my 1st ROOT for April (5th for the year - this might sound like a small amount but it is a massive achievement compared to what I would normally manage!) - "A Time to Keep Silence" by Patrick Leigh Fermor, a lovely short book detailing his travels to and impressions of monasteries (two in France, and the abandoned rock monasteries in Cappadocia in Turkey, which sounded absolutely fascinating). 4/5.
I've updated my own ticker but avoided the group one, as usual :)

>115 ipsoivan: I bought The Broken Road recently, but I want to reread the first two (A Time of Gifts and Between the Woods and the Water) before I start it, so I get the sense of the entire journey from start to finish. Depending on how I go with my ROOTs I might do the rereads towards the end of this year, and then have The Broken Road as one of next year's ROOTs.

Even tho I haven't quite finished The Bee Season by Myla Goldberg, I've decided to start The Morning Show Murders by Al Roker.

Well, I finished my 48th ROOT on Tuesday, April 22nd! :) Cold Mountain: A Novel. Charles Frazier is a new author for me, but this was an absolutely excellent book, in my opinion! :) And this afternoon, I finished my 49th ROOT - All Through the Night: A Suspense Story by Mary Higgins Clark. Not an absolutely terrible book, by any means, it's just that the mystery wasn't all that suspenseful. At least, in my opinion. :) Here is the link to my thread: https://www.librarything.com/topic/163437

Hi there, everyone! I finished two ROOTs on Wednesday, April 23rd - The Affair by Lily Maxton and The Duke's Shotgun Wedding by Stacy Reid - both books were actually historical romance novellas. I hope to finish reading at least one - maybe two more ROOTs by the end of the month. :) Here is the link to my thread: https://www.librarything.com/topic/163513.

I finished my 3rd ROOT for April (7th for the year), Oliver Sacks "The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat". I've updated my ticker but left the group one as usual. I suspect that will be it for April. I'm pleased to be ahead of target for a change. :)

I have read 3 ROOTs in April for a total of 16. (I'm reading another one now, but I most likely won't finish it by the end of the month.) Only 5 away from my goal now! I've updated my personal ticker but haven't touched any group tickers.

Actually, I have finished another Root for this month Alice's Tulips by Sandra Dallas. It was rather raw out today so I postponed my errands and spent the day with a book instead. But I really think this will be my last for the month.

I finished my second ROOT for the month - Flu by Gina Kolata. I should finish one more tomorrow evening. It was a very slow reading month for me as real life got in the way.
144riverwillow
Its been a bad month for reading, long story mainly to do with lots of work deadlines, but I've started reading lots of books and my reading's been interrupted and I've put them down and not picked them up again. So not a single ROOT has been finished. Good job I got ahead last month.
145Tallulah_Rose
I finished 2 ROOTS in April, getting me to 6/20 in total. I'm quite behing, but I hope to get back on track some time. Congrats to all for the great progress!

Only 4 ROOTS for me this month, I am a little behind thanks to my new fascination with using Overdrive to read library books.
Lately I've been finding that even with reading glasses my eyes can't read for long periods of time with smaller really light print or fonts that are close together. I will never go strictly e-book, but some of the older physical books I have will have to be replaced in electronic form.
I have decided to pull more ROOTS for May to try to catch up.

Hello there everyone! :) Well, I think I may have gained back a star or two, but I'll leave it to Cheli to figure out the final calculations! :) At the moment, I'm reading 1 ebook ROOT (every book on my TBR pile I consider to be ROOTs, so I guess that's not much of a distinction.)
Anyway, I thought that since I probably won't be able to finish reading this ebook by tonight, I'd do my ROOT Reading Wrap-up now.
My April was much better than I was expecting - five more than last April! :) So, in keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for this month:
Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 1
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 6
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 0 (yes!)
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 28 (what can I say?! - I am so weak! :))
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 1
Leaves Swept Up: stands for books that were purged: 3

One more to add for April, Herself Surprised by Joyce Cary.
Sara Monday is a sweet-natured rogue, a kind of 20th century Moll Flanders, and this is the story of her career as cook, wife, artist's muse and... well, no spoilers. Sara always seems to turn her setbacks into benefits to herself and to those she loves; it's a pleasure to see how her mind works. She is, however, a surprise to herself--hence the title.
One of the beauties of the book is Sara's gift of description. Here is a random sample:
The sun was so bright as a new gas-mantle--you couldn't look at it even through your eyelashes, and the sand so bright gold as deep-fried potatoes. The sky was like washed-out Jap silk and there were just a few little clouds coming out on it like down feathers out of an old cushion; the rocks were so warm as new gingerbread cakes and the sea had a melty thick look, like oven glass.
I've updated all tickers.
