The second month of our 2014 ROOT Challenge has us a little short of our goal. We need to push a little extra to catch up.
I have placed a ★ for anyone who reached 2/12th of their goal. If anyone is at ¼ of their goal they got ★★, and two months ahead got ★★★ . This just signifies that you are on target to reach your goal if you keep up the same pace. Those without a ★ (I caught up this month) need to concentrate on ROOTs if the group is to remain on target.
Let's see the Tickers sparkle with enormous proportions so that we dig deep and weed out those UNREAD BOOKS!

These tickers show the progress toward the group goal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like to ask for your assistance keeping the totals in 2014.
Anyone with the ° symbol next to their name still need to add tickers to the thread or need to remember to put their total at the end of the month in the progress thread. It is extremely helpful to have the progress consolidated in only one or two locations.
I try to keep up on the personal threads during the month, so having to revisit to gather numbers can be a bit time consuming if the system is slow. Any help is appreciated.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are the totals for February. If anybody's number need adjustment, please let me know.
If your name is not on the list, I couldn't find your ticker or personal thread.
So, now, Ladies and Gentlemen, BOOK LOVERS, BIBLIOPHILES, BOOK HOARDERS - get out there and read those BOOKS!
Our goal for March is 1,285.

Are the stars listed here in addition to last month? Or is it readjusted each month? Because there's some people with a lot more stars than you listed at the top, but I've just my lonely one (haha) and I was on track both times. (Actually I'd need "12.5" books to be at the specified ¼ of my goal and I'm technically there, but, only whole books count! Pff! ;P) Just checking!
3cyderry
The ★s are readjusted each month. So if you stay on track each month then you will have 1 ★. If you are ahead of schedule, for each month you are ahead, you will get an extra ★.
If I don't readjust each month, then someone who was on schedule in January but got captivated by library books in February and is now a bit behind, wouldn't have a star this month. To earn the star you have to be on schedule for the year. In the same manner if someone had 4★s in January and didn't read any in February, they would lose a star in February because they would still be ahead, but just not as far. Does that make sense?

I'm still a bit behind for the year, but hope to catch up this month as we're on vacation til next Thurs and I'm already close to finishing another couple of books.
I forgot to post in the Feb progress thread but I finished In the Woods by Tana French and liked it very much. I can see why rabbit princess gave it 5 stars. I did too.

I see that there are several zeros - what's the policy about people who sign up and then disappear? Do you end up excluding their goals from the group goal?
8.Monkey.
>7 leslie.98: Yeah, it's still early so it's possible some folks are just busy with other things or whatnot, but if they continue to be MIA for several mos they'll be removed from the main ticker/goal.
9Robertgreaves
I think zeroes are moved into a separate list and their target removed from the group target at the end of June.

Congrats Squeak!~! You are pushing us.

Great work, Cheli.
I myownself have finished my first root for march: Death in Disguise by Caroline Graham. Great mystery; surprise ending; Graham joyfully skewers a variety of modern ideas/fads in her works.

Hello there, Cheli! I added one more ROOT, but was unable to update my totals on Friday night due to computer problems. Thanks for all your great work! :) And congrats, Sqeakychu! :)
13moonshineandrosefire
Hi there, Cheli - my totals are correct, and I finished my first ROOT for March! :) I'll be updating my tickers later on today. Way to go, Squeaky! :)
14Ameise1
Good morning Chèli, thank you so much for those works you are doing for us. I wish you a lovely Sunday.
16streamsong
I actually had two more ROOTS that I stayed up reading until midnight Friday night. But, I didn't get the ticker updated until yesterday (and I still don't have my thread updated). I'm good if you want to hold off and count them in March.
17majkia
Happy Read day!
I finished my first ROOT for March: Death at La Fenice. From 2012. Updating all tickers

I've finished my first one for this month too - The Camel Bookmobile by Masha Hamilton. I'll be updating my thread a little later.
20lindapanzo
Phooey, I read only two of my required ROOTs for Feb so I've fallen one behind.
The good news is that I've got quite a few ROOTS in mind on my reading list for the month. Maybe I'll even get ahead.

First ROOT of the month, done. I absolutely loved Divergent.
24dudes22
Another finished - The Cruelest Month by Louise Penny.
25Anansilaw
I just updated my ticker - At the end of February, I had read 15 ROOTs. I'm now at 16 with my first ROOT for March - A Mourning Wedding by Carola Dunn
26dudes22
I've finished another excellent book - In the Time of Butterflies by Julia Alvarez.
27.Monkey.
I finished my first for March the other day, Wide Sargasso Sea. Working on two more at the moment (three if you count the NetGalley ebook).
30avanders
Woot! pretty stars :)
Congrats everyone!
And boy am I glad I'm a little ahead right now, because I think March will be 100% early-readers, and 0% ROOTs... :-o

Here's a ticker question. This does not refer to my main ROOT ticker, but to my other tickers that track different things for me. When I reach the goals on them, I'd like to delete them. To do that properly, do I just delete the link on the page I'm displaying the ticker on?
Or do I need to go back to the Ticker Factory page and delete them there? If so, please tell me how, because I don't see a way to do that.
I made one go away already, but afterwards I wondered if just deleting the link on my ROOT page just 'hid' it and left it laying around somewhere taking up cyberspace.
Thanks!

I have no idea if tickers can actually be deleted on TF. You can simply remove them from your post.
35majkia
I finished The Cloud Roads a ROOT from 2012. What a terrific read. Am updating all tickers.
36connie53
I think deleting them from one post will delete them everywhere, But that's just a feeling.
37.Monkey.
>36 connie53: If you remove it from a post all you're doing is editing the post, it doesn't get rid of the ticker itself. You'd have to edit every post with the ticker to hide all evidence of its existence.
39connie53
This morning I finally finished ROOT #5 De toorn van een waanzinnige god by Raymond E. Feist. It took some time to read and it certainly is not one of Feists best books.
That's all I can give it. Too many battles going on in this one. And too chaotically written. But in order to read the later books I had to finish this one.
I'm more than halfway into De kinderen van Prospero by Jan Siegel and that's a ROOT also.
Going to update the group tickers!
Edit: the tickers were not in sync so I added 2 books to the percentage ticker and 1 to the other one. Now they both are on 817.

yay! First ROOT finished for March. After my big reading push at the end of February, I've been a little burnt out.
44lindapanzo
My current ROOT is huge, about 750 pages of text, plus other materials. It's going to take me awhile to finish this one.
45Merryann
>34 .Monkey.: and 36 Thanks Connie and PM. I think I shall just delete it from my page. There is nothing on the Ticker Factory page that talks about how to delete tickers one is finished with, so I'm guessing it doesn't clutter up the cyber-world for me to just delete it. It feels good to be accomplishing some of my reading goals and not needing those mini-tickers anymore!

No new ROOTs, but I did learn that in Japanese there's a specific word for unread books you own - tsundoku, so I wanted to share that.
52dudes22
I've just finished The Shortest Distance Between Two Women by Kris Radish. Still a little behind, but I think I can be caught up by month end.
53cyderry
50>> I'll have to add tsundoku to my dictionary! I wonder if I could rename my collection of "My Unread"?
54Robertgreaves
But does 'tsundoko' mean books you simply haven't had time to read yet or does it mean books you own purely for display purposes or to impress others? Or does it cover both?

>54 Robertgreaves: The post I originally saw said this:
"the act of leaving a book unread after buying it, typically piled up together with other such unread books."
And on my thread lilisin added this commentary:
"Yep! In fact, tsundoku (積読) is a new word that was just recently created in the language to represent those who have lots of books piled up. It comes from the words "to pile up" (積む - tsumu) and "to read" (読む - yomu). If you notice, those same characters show up in the word above. Japan has its own version of LT and Goodreads so the word came up at about that time."

Got my first root done for March (The Virgin Suicides) and my first ever ROOT done thanks to this group! It felt great to get something that had been sitting on my shelf for awhile off! I think being a member of this group is going to be a great motivator towards getting some of these books finally read! Also my ticker has been updated to show this book has been read.
I also have to jump in and say I love this word Tsundoku! Since my pile is massive and needs defeated it sounds more like a monster that needs slaying than the procrastination and putting off that it has been hehe.

It's A. Scott Berg's biography of Woodrow Wilson, Wilson. The actual text is 750 pages long but the entire book is close to 1,000 pages, I think.
I'm closing in on about 3/4 of the way through it. It's interesting but I'm definitely read to move on to something lighter.

>73 teeney: You click on the group page (at the top of the thread) and join the group. Then you make a thread of your own with your goal, and update it as you read. You should also make a ticker, and then add it to the ticker thread, because that's how Cyderry keeps track of our progress as a group.
The rules are: read books you own.
The rules are: read books you own.
75Tallulah_Rose
Adding to the rules: You make your own rules, but basically it is to get books read you already own. You decide if they should be on your shelves for a certain time, or belong to a certain category or whatever. But, you cannot do something wrong. As a first impression you might visit threads of some other members to see how they create their challenge.

It's been a while since I have been here (new books kept throwing themselves at me...). Just finished Little Man, What Now? by Hans Fallada. Great book which I have had on my shelves for well over 3 years!

I've read and reviewed Poul Anderson's A Midsummer Tempest, my first ROOT for March and my 7th one this year.

ROOT #4 now read (#1 for March) and my ticker has been updated (I am avoiding the group ticker so that will still need changing). It was "The Great Typo Hunt: Two Friends Changing the World, One Correction at a Time" by Jeff Deck and Benjamin D Herson. Two nerdy guys on a road trip to correct public typos throughout America. Interesting debates on language and education, and musings on the different reactions they got. 3.5/5.
I should add, I have reduced my personal goal from 25 ROOTs for the year to 18, so presumably that means the percentages might change slightly on the group ticker. It means that I have managed my 1.5 books per month for Jan and Feb after all (rather than the 2 and a bit I was originally planning for).

This may not be the best place to announce it, but: I have (finally!) added ALL of my to-read pile to LibraryThing! The count on my TBR collection should not go up again. Unless, of course, I buy books. But. Whew.
94rabbitprincess
>93 jen.e.moore: Nice work! It must be very satisfying to finally have it all recorded.
95SqueakyChu
My numbers should read 4 out of 6 (not 5). Tickers updated today with #4 ROOT read.
96HelenBaker
Finally a root for the month. I got side-tracked by a couple of library books but this one means I'm on target and should get my star. :-) Tickers updated.
97leslie.98
>93 jen.e.moore: Wow! Congrats!
99Robertgreaves
I think there is a separate ticker thread, isn't there?
100Tallulah_Rose
Here's the link to the ticker thread: http://www.librarything.com/topic/162053
101cyderry
Yes, if any of you have a "°" next to your name, then your tickers are not in the ticker thread. If you would please copy them into the ticker thread, it really saves me a bunch of time. Thanks.
102mabith
I just finished my 7th ROOT, The Battle of Blair Mountain putting me a bit ahead for my goal. Once I decided to make a rainbow with the book spines I've been more excited to get these read.
104mabith
Yup! I post a new picture with each new ROOT in my thread (there are two that don't fit well, because the rainbow idea came after I'd read three books already).
105dudes22
I've finished In This Rain by S.J. Rozan, one of her stand-alone novels. I've started Dandelions in a Jelly Jar by Traci Depree and am still working on Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio.
106streamsong
I love the rainbow! Another great motivation for keeping us after those sneaky ROOTS!
107Henrik_Madsen
Second ROOT of the month has been in my family for almost a century. Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson: Synnøve Solbakken
Tickers updated or will be shortly!

109kac522
>107 Henrik_Madsen: Wow--a 100-year-old ROOT! That has to be a record of some sort...
110Henrik_Madsen
>109 kac522: Could be - but it's not been my ROOT all the time, obviously.
My parents don't like reading much, but they have held on to the books they have inherited from their parents, and they have started to send them my way. It's funny reading those books and imagining your grandparents going through them much younger than I am now.

112Tallulah_Rose
>110 Henrik_Madsen: Henrik_Madsen: That's such a great image! I've got some ROOTs on my shelves that I inherited from my grandparents, though the books themselves are not a century old yet. But I like knowing that these were owned and possibly read by my grandparents some time.
113jen.e.moore
>110 Henrik_Madsen: That's fantastic. (And to think I was so pleased the other day to discover that my copy of Nine Princes of Amber has both my parents' ownership marks in it...)
114rubyandthetwins
Hello everybody! ;) So far, I've only been able to finish 4 ROOTS for March. I think I'll be able to finish at least two more before the end of the month. Here's my link: https://www.librarything.com/topic/163513
115lindapanzo
I finished my third ROOT for the month last night, the fifth book in the Irish Country series. I'm glad to be back into this series after a few years' absence. I've got all the remaining books in the series on my shelf so maybe I'll aim for another in the next month or two.
One more ROOT this month and I'll be back on my pace for the year.
Incidentally, I note that we are not that far off the pace, as a group. We can do it!!

>112 Tallulah_Rose: It's great to have books connecting us to the past, isn't it? - And I must admit I appreciate it more as I get older.

I've finished Dandelions in a Jelly Jar by Traci DePree my 16th book this year which puts me back to where I should be.
118kkunker
Finished my second ROOT of the month so I'm on track for my goal. I updated the group tickers.
119Merryann
I'm glad to be back after having to be gone from here for so long. It's great to see all the good reading people have done! Today or tomorrow I'm going to update my tickers and list my reading for March. It's been a good month for reading for me, even if I haven't been able to keep up here as well as I would have liked.
120majkia
Another ROOT for me, from 2013, The Brutal Telling . Updating all tickers.
121cyderry
The ticker is showing us just about 140 books short of what we need to reach this month's goal and there are 130+ members of the group so if everyone just tried to get one more ROOT book finished in these last 5 days - we'll be on track for the 1st quarter of the year.
SO READ THOSE ROOTs!!!
SO READ THOSE ROOTs!!!
122Tallulah_Rose
We should also keep in mind that some people (like me) only post there ROOTs at the end of the month or leave the tickers alone completely.
123Merryann
I have read 8 books so far this month, and I have 4 in progress (I hope to finish at least two of them before the end of the month). I've updated my tickers and the ticker at the top of this thread.
Is there a monthly ticker that shows our overall progress and goal for the month? Or do you just do the math on the yearly ticker to get the monthly goal, Chèli?

124.Monkey.
I hadn't added any of mine to the group ticker and I've finished 5 so far and am working on another 3, that at the very least 1 of which will be finished.
125dudes22
I tend to lose track partway through the month of what I've updated and what I haven't so I usually just let Cheli grab mine from my ticker at the end of the month. I think I've read 9 this month and may finish another one before the end of the month.
126MissWatson
You have all been so busy ROOTing this month! I'm a total slacker, but my ticker is up to date. Will do better next month, I promise!
127rubyandthetwins
Hi there, Cheli! ;) I finished my fifth ROOT for March late last night, and even though I count all books that are in my collection as ROOTs, this ebook had been on my TBR pile since August of 2012! LOL! :) Anyway, here is the link to my thread: https://www.librarything.com/topic/163513. All of my tickers are updated! I'm hoping to finish at least two more ROOTs by the end of the month. :)
128moonshineandrosefire
Hello Cheli! I've been kind of slow with reading my ROOTs for this month - as of March 25th, I'd finished my seventh ROOT - and am currently reading an eighth. I'm not sure if I will have it finished by the end of the month, but I hope I will. :) All of my tickers are updated, and I will add my 27th ROOT to my list by this afternoon: https://www.librarything.com/topic/163437
129avanders
Whew! Finished my early reviewers (5!) and I've finally finished my next ROOT as well (#8 for the year!), Divergent. :) I'll be updating just my personal ticker...
131lindapanzo
>130 cyderry: Awww, that's cute, Cheli.
Amazingly, I have 6 books going right now, which is probably a record for me. This number includes 3 ROOTs (and three Kindle books, which aren't ROOTs for me this year. Hoping to finish at least one more.

I'm currently reading a ROOT, but I'm not sure if I will be able to finish it this month. To much fun and work things are happening right now.
133leslie.98
>130 cyderry: Chéli, that is so sweet!
I have been updating my own ticker and thread but not the group ones. I hope to squeeze in one more ROOT before the end of the month...

Hmm...I was about to make a library book next up (it's due soon) but maybe I'll pull one from the TBR pile....
136riverwillow
Just coming in to say that I've read 4 ROOTS so far this month, depending on how the weekend goes, I may get another one finished this month.
I've not touched the tickers.

I've finished another Root - Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio.
138Robertgreaves
I won't be reading any more ROOTS this month, although I may just squeeze another ROOTless book in. But here is my report for March 2014:
UpROOTED books: 8
ROOTless books: 2
Added to the TBR pile: 1
My ROOTS were:
Helen Berry's The Castrato and His Wife
Tom Wright's Lent for Everyone: Matthew
Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea
Kenneth Minogue's Politics: A Very Short Introduction
Stephen Cottrell's How to Pray Alone With Others At Any Time In Any Place
John Riches's The Bible: A Very Short Introduction
David Crystal's Begat: The King James Bible and the English Language
Tim Dowley's The Christians: An Illustrated History
ROOTS in YTD: 22
No tickers were harmed in the compilation of this report.

Just updated my ticker: was stunned to discover I'm at 20 ROOTS total.
140Tallulah_Rose
>139 rabbitprincess: rabbitprincess: Well, then congrats on that. It's nice to be able to surprise oneself isn't it?
141Jackie_K
I won't have finished any more ROOTS this month, but am half-way through the next one (or at least will be by the end of the month). So although I won't be getting any stars for March, in my head I know that I am on target, now that I've reduced my annual target to 18 - it will be 1.5 ROOTS for the month. So I shall award myself a virtual star anyway :)
So, my final tally for March is one ROOT - I updated my own ticker but not the group one.

I loved your report >138 Robertgreaves:!
>139 rabbitprincess: What a great surprise! That's about where I should be, if I want to hit my ambitious, invisible goal instead of my official goal. I'm afraid I've fallen a bit behind the higher goal this month although my official goal will still look good.
>141 Jackie_K: Yay! Great that you're on schedule!
Everyone is doing so well with their goals!
So far I've only finished 2 this month, but have several in progress. It's a cold, rainy weekend so I vow to get at least one (and maybe more!) done even though what I should be doing are my taxes. Sorry if I'm late, Internal Revenue Service, I needed to finish a couple of ROOTS. (Yeah, that should work.)

Another one done - The Girl Who Remembered Snow by Charles Mathes. This will probably be my last one for this month even though a rainy day here is a good excuse to curl up with a book.
144lsh63
Good Morning Everyone:
I probably won't finish any more ROOTS for the month. My total for the month is 4, and my ytd total is 17. I'm off to update my ticker and organize my April reads!

146lindapanzo
I had a good ROOTS month in March. I thought I was done for the month but then got grabbed by one of my current reads, which happens to be a ROOT. I'm off on Monday so I might be able to finish this month, after all. All the Pretty Horses.
147rainpebble

MARCH ROOTS:
26. The Red Garden by Alice Hoffman; {acquired 2/03/2011}; (5*)
27. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque; {acquired 1/15/2011}; (5*)
28. Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys; {acquired 9/08/2011; (4*)
29. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte; {acquired 9/02/2007}; (5*)
30. Charms for the Easy Life by Kaye Gibbons; {acquired 9/02/2007}; (3*)
31. One of Ours by Willa Cather; {acquired 5/09/2010}; (4 1/2*)
32. Aleta Dey by Francis Marion Beynon; {acquired 5/09/2010}; (3 1/2*)
I am afraid that this proves to be the sum of my ROOT reading for March; a total of 7 on the month. My ticker has been updated. I've not touched the group one.
(I smiled when I saw that you & I both read Wide Sargasso Sea this month Robertgreaves. :-)
148Familyhistorian
March wasn't as bad a month for ROOTing as I feared it would be. I managed to read 5 bringing my year to date total to 14. That's well on the way to my goal of 35 for the year.
149tymfos
I have three ROOTs in progress but will probably not finish any of them by tomorrow night. Drat! I only finished 2 this month.
150connie53
I've almost finished number # 3 for march ( #7 in total) maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, maybe tuesday (april 1).
152lsh63
I finished another book, so 5 for the month and 18 for my year to date total. I've updated my ticker.
153ipsoivan
I will not be adding another to the ticker, alas. I'm still 300 pages from the end of The Brothers Karamazov. Next month!
154Robertgreaves
#147 I read Jane Eyre last November and found Wide Sargasso Sea just afterwards. So when the Caribbean came up for the GeoCat I knew what to read ;-) Unfortunately, I don't have any books in the real or virtual TBR piles set in Eastern Europe.
155tymfos
Ok, I managed to pull one more tiny ROOT. I read The Summer Camp Mystery for the mysteryCAT juvenile mystery theme over on the category challenge. That is only my third for the month, but brings me up to 12 out of 48, still on pace.
157lsh63
Ah, nothing better than a person who works with numbers all day and can't count lol!
My ROOTS are 6 for the month, with a grand total of 19. Off to correct my ticker, hopefully for the last time.

I'm hoping for one more ROOT. I think I'll finish Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore today.
159cyderry
There's a problem with a few of the tickers on the ticker thread.
Could JacobsBeloved, mgnm, scenik1, becbart, lulaa refresh their tickers within their messages there please?

Ok, I've read 2 ROOTs in March (all others were ERs :))
8. Divergent by Veronica Roth, March 26, 2014
9. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, March 31, 2014
Personal ticker updated; left group tickers alone.

Hello everyone! My March was really pretty good (it started out sort of slow for me, but I ended up reading one more book than last March! :)) So, in keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for this month:
Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 2
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 6
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 1
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 9
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 12
I started reading The Tin Can Tree by Anne Tyler on Saturday afternoon. I'm not that far into the book yet, but I hope to be very soon.
All of my personal tickers are updated :) Thanks so much, Cheli!

Yay! Finished Mr Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore so adding another ROOT. Updating all tickers.
163cyderry
I have gathered the numbers for March, so if anyone finishes another ROOT today, please be sure to let me know here.
Hopefully, April will bring spring!

I still read on the last day of the month, and usually finish at least one book that day, so tallying numbers ahead doesn't work well. As it is, I finished two more today, so my total is 19.
168Tallulah_Rose
I didn't finish any more today, so that is 2 for March and 4 for the year.
Unfortunately I already added 3 books, but that still keeps one book ahead. And I have several ROOTs going, so should probably finish some of them soon.
I added Mr. Penumbra's 24 hour bookstore today. I amvisiting my hometown and since I am usually here when the shopd are closed, I took the opportunity to visit the local bookstore. And there it was. And it is a small bookstore, living mostly of summer tourist. So it's kind of my duty to buy a book when I'm in, isn't it?

170Tallulah_Rose
I hope it's good! I liked the cover and the description read good. And it's about books. Everything that makes it a psooible good read ;-)

I'm sorry, Chèli, I am late updating my ticker for March. I'd updated mine and the main ticker after ROOT 8, updated my own ticker after ROOT 11, and just now added ROOT 12 to my own ticker.
You probably got eleven for me...do you want to just add the last one to my April count?
