MARCH ROOT - Progress Thread

The second month of our 2014 ROOT Challenge has us a little short of our goal. We need to push a little extra to catch up.
I have placed a ★ for anyone who reached 2/12th of their goal. If anyone is at ¼ of their goal they got ★★, and two months ahead got ★★★ . This just signifies that you are on target to reach your goal if you keep up the same pace. Those without a ★ (I caught up this month) need to concentrate on ROOTs if the group is to remain on target.
Let's see the Tickers sparkle with enormous proportions so that we dig deep and weed out those UNREAD BOOKS!

I would like to ask for your assistance keeping the totals in 2014.
Anyone with the ° symbol next to their name still need to add tickers to the thread or need to remember to put their total at the end of the month in the progress thread. It is extremely helpful to have the progress consolidated in only one or two locations.
I try to keep up on the personal threads during the month, so having to revisit to gather numbers can be a bit time consuming if the system is slow. Any help is appreciated.

Are the stars listed here in addition to last month? Or is it readjusted each month? Because there's some people with a lot more stars than you listed at the top, but I've just my lonely one (haha) and I was on track both times. (Actually I'd need "12.5" books to be at the specified ¼ of my goal and I'm technically there, but, only whole books count! Pff! ;P) Just checking!

The ★s are readjusted each month. So if you stay on track each month then you will have 1 ★. If you are ahead of schedule, for each month you are ahead, you will get an extra ★.

If I don't readjust each month, then someone who was on schedule in January but got captivated by library books in February and is now a bit behind, wouldn't have a star this month. To earn the star you have to be on schedule for the year. In the same manner if someone had 4★s in January and didn't read any in February, they would lose a star in February because they would still be ahead, but just not as far. Does that make sense?

I'm still a bit behind for the year, but hope to catch up this month as we're on vacation til next Thurs and I'm already close to finishing another couple of books.

I forgot to post in the Feb progress thread but I finished In the Woods by Tana French and liked it very much. I can see why rabbit princess gave it 5 stars. I did too.

I see that there are several zeros - what's the policy about people who sign up and then disappear? Do you end up excluding their goals from the group goal?

>7 leslie.98: Yeah, it's still early so it's possible some folks are just busy with other things or whatnot, but if they continue to be MIA for several mos they'll be removed from the main ticker/goal.

I think zeroes are moved into a separate list and their target removed from the group target at the end of June.

I just finished my first ROOT for March, Middlemarch... Good to start the month with a chunkster done :)

As usual, I updated my ticker but didn't touch the group ones.

I've finished my first one for this month too - The Camel Bookmobile by Masha Hamilton. I'll be updating my thread a little later.

Phooey, I read only two of my required ROOTs for Feb so I've fallen one behind.

The good news is that I've got quite a few ROOTS in mind on my reading list for the month. Maybe I'll even get ahead.

The year is not over yet. Relax Linda!

I've finished another excellent book - In the Time of Butterflies by Julia Alvarez.

I finished my first for March the other day, Wide Sargasso Sea. Working on two more at the moment (three if you count the NetGalley ebook).

I actually finished 2 ROOTs yesterday - one audio, 1 book.

I'm reading 2 ROOTs now!

Here's a ticker question. This does not refer to my main ROOT ticker, but to my other tickers that track different things for me. When I reach the goals on them, I'd like to delete them. To do that properly, do I just delete the link on the page I'm displaying the ticker on?

Or do I need to go back to the Ticker Factory page and delete them there? If so, please tell me how, because I don't see a way to do that.

I made one go away already, but afterwards I wondered if just deleting the link on my ROOT page just 'hid' it and left it laying around somewhere taking up cyberspace.

I have no idea if tickers can actually be deleted on TF. You can simply remove them from your post.

I finished The Cloud Roads a ROOT from 2012. What a terrific read. Am updating all tickers.

I think deleting them from one post will delete them everywhere, But that's just a feeling.

This morning I finally finished ROOT #5 De toorn van een waanzinnige god by Raymond E. Feist. It took some time to read and it certainly is not one of Feists best books. That's all I can give it. Too many battles going on in this one. And too chaotically written. But in order to read the later books I had to finish this one.

I'm more than halfway into De kinderen van Prospero by Jan Siegel and that's a ROOT also.

Edit: the tickers were not in sync so I added 2 books to the percentage ticker and 1 to the other one. Now they both are on 817.

Finished my first ROOT for March last night, my 8th overall. I updated all tickers.

I've finished ROOT 5 of 10 and have updated all tickers.

yay! First ROOT finished for March. After my big reading push at the end of February, I've been a little burnt out.

My current ROOT is huge, about 750 pages of text, plus other materials. It's going to take me awhile to finish this one.

I finished my 5th ROOT for March this morning. On to the next one!

ETA - I was just tallying up my YTD ROOTs and realized I miscounted - I'm up to 20!

No new ROOTs, but I did learn that in Japanese there's a specific word for unread books you own - tsundoku, so I wanted to share that.

But does 'tsundoko' mean books you simply haven't had time to read yet or does it mean books you own purely for display purposes or to impress others? Or does it cover both?

Got my first root done for March (The Virgin Suicides) and my first ever ROOT done thanks to this group! It felt great to get something that had been sitting on my shelf for awhile off! I think being a member of this group is going to be a great motivator towards getting some of these books finally read! Also my ticker has been updated to show this book has been read.

I also have to jump in and say I love this word Tsundoku! Since my pile is massive and needs defeated it sounds more like a monster that needs slaying than the procrastination and putting off that it has been hehe.

It's A. Scott Berg's biography of Woodrow Wilson, Wilson. The actual text is 750 pages long but the entire book is close to 1,000 pages, I think.

I'm closing in on about 3/4 of the way through it. It's interesting but I'm definitely read to move on to something lighter.

I'm sensing a new monster movie franchise.

How exactly do I join this? What are the rules?

The rules are: read books you own.

Adding to the rules: You make your own rules, but basically it is to get books read you already own. You decide if they should be on your shelves for a certain time, or belong to a certain category or whatever. But, you cannot do something wrong. As a first impression you might visit threads of some other members to see how they create their challenge.

It's been a while since I have been here (new books kept throwing themselves at me...). Just finished Little Man, What Now? by Hans Fallada. Great book which I have had on my shelves for well over 3 years!

I've read and reviewed Poul Anderson's A Midsummer Tempest, my first ROOT for March and my 7th one this year.

Finally finished the Woodrow Wilson bio, 750 pages of tiny text. Hurray, hurray.

If you buy Broken Homes now and the new one in July, they can be ROOTs for next year.

I don't think I mentioned my last ROOT, I was Right on Time by Buck O'Neil. I updated my own ticker, but I've lost track of what I've done with the group ticker, so I'm just going to leave it alone.

I liked Whispers Under Ground, but I think I need to go back and start from the beginning before I try any later books in the series :)

ROOT #4 now read (#1 for March) and my ticker has been updated (I am avoiding the group ticker so that will still need changing). It was "The Great Typo Hunt: Two Friends Changing the World, One Correction at a Time" by Jeff Deck and Benjamin D Herson. Two nerdy guys on a road trip to correct public typos throughout America. Interesting debates on language and education, and musings on the different reactions they got. 3.5/5.

I should add, I have reduced my personal goal from 25 ROOTs for the year to 18, so presumably that means the percentages might change slightly on the group ticker. It means that I have managed my 1.5 books per month for Jan and Feb after all (rather than the 2 and a bit I was originally planning for).

I've just finished The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey by Trenton Lee Stewart, a quite enjoyable YA book.

I just finished my 7th ROOT, The Battle of Blair Mountain putting me a bit ahead for my goal. Once I decided to make a rainbow with the book spines I've been more excited to get these read.

Yup! I post a new picture with each new ROOT in my thread (there are two that don't fit well, because the rainbow idea came after I'd read three books already).

I've finished In This Rain by S.J. Rozan, one of her stand-alone novels. I've started Dandelions in a Jelly Jar by Traci Depree and am still working on Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio.

I love the rainbow! Another great motivation for keeping us after those sneaky ROOTS!

My parents don't like reading much, but they have held on to the books they have inherited from their parents, and they have started to send them my way. It's funny reading those books and imagining your grandparents going through them much younger than I am now.

I finished my third ROOT for the month last night, the fifth book in the Irish Country series. I'm glad to be back into this series after a few years' absence. I've got all the remaining books in the series on my shelf so maybe I'll aim for another in the next month or two.

One more ROOT this month and I'll be back on my pace for the year.

Incidentally, I note that we are not that far off the pace, as a group. We can do it!!

I'm glad to be back after having to be gone from here for so long. It's great to see all the good reading people have done! Today or tomorrow I'm going to update my tickers and list my reading for March. It's been a good month for reading for me, even if I haven't been able to keep up here as well as I would have liked.

The ticker is showing us just about 140 books short of what we need to reach this month's goal and there are 130+ members of the group so if everyone just tried to get one more ROOT book finished in these last 5 days - we'll be on track for the 1st quarter of the year.

We should also keep in mind that some people (like me) only post there ROOTs at the end of the month or leave the tickers alone completely.

I have read 8 books so far this month, and I have 4 in progress (I hope to finish at least two of them before the end of the month). I've updated my tickers and the ticker at the top of this thread.

Is there a monthly ticker that shows our overall progress and goal for the month? Or do you just do the math on the yearly ticker to get the monthly goal, Chèli?

I hadn't added any of mine to the group ticker and I've finished 5 so far and am working on another 3, that at the very least 1 of which will be finished.

I tend to lose track partway through the month of what I've updated and what I haven't so I usually just let Cheli grab mine from my ticker at the end of the month. I think I've read 9 this month and may finish another one before the end of the month.

You have all been so busy ROOTing this month! I'm a total slacker, but my ticker is up to date. Will do better next month, I promise!

Hello Cheli! I've been kind of slow with reading my ROOTs for this month - as of March 25th, I'd finished my seventh ROOT - and am currently reading an eighth. Amazingly, I have 6 books going right now, which is probably a record for me. This number includes 3 ROOTs (and three Kindle books, which aren't ROOTs for me this year. Hoping to finish at least one more.

March wasn't as bad a month for ROOTing as I feared it would be. I managed to read 5 bringing my year to date total to 14. That's well on the way to my goal of 35 for the year.

I have three ROOTs in progress but will probably not finish any of them by tomorrow night. Drat! I only finished 2 this month.

I've almost finished number # 3 for march ( #7 in total) maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, maybe tuesday (april 1).

I completed 3 for the month for a total of 14 for the year against my goal of 30.

I finished another book, so 5 for the month and 18 for my year to date total. I've updated my ticker.

I will not be adding another to the ticker, alas. I'm still 300 pages from the end of The Brothers Karamazov. Next month!

#147 I read Jane Eyre last November and found Wide Sargasso Sea just afterwards. So when the Caribbean came up for the GeoCat I knew what to read ;-) Unfortunately, I don't have any books in the real or virtual TBR piles set in Eastern Europe.

Ok, I managed to pull one more tiny ROOT. I read The Summer Camp Mystery for the mysteryCAT juvenile mystery theme over on the category challenge. That is only my third for the month, but brings me up to 12 out of 48, still on pace.

I still read on the last day of the month, and usually finish at least one book that day, so tallying numbers ahead doesn't work well. As it is, I finished two more today, so my total is 19.

I didn't finish any more today, so that is 2 for March and 4 for the year.
Unfortunately I already added 3 books, but that still keeps one book ahead. And I have several ROOTs going, so should probably finish some of them soon.
I added Mr. Penumbra's 24 hour bookstore today. I amvisiting my hometown and since I am usually here when the shopd are closed, I took the opportunity to visit the local bookstore. And there it was. And it is a small bookstore, living mostly of summer tourist. So it's kind of my duty to buy a book when I'm in, isn't it?
