I wouldn't mind having a way to rank books in my "To Read" collection. I could use tags, such as "to read 1" or "to read high priority", but I would have more fun actually ranking them numerically (since I know I would spend a lot of time rearranging that list!). Alternatively, there could be a pull-down such as Amazon uses to let you prioritize your wishlist into categories such as "highest," "high," "medium," etc.

Ooh, now that I think of it, I'd like a way to prioritize my LT wishlist in addition to my LT "to read" collection....

Perhaps you could use the "List" feature? It would be a separate grouping from your collection, so it might take some work at first if you have large To Read and Wishlist collections.

Tags are always a possibility for this kind of activity.

Yes, I mentioned tags in my original post. That actually is probably how I'll go, but I was just wistfully thinking of something different.... ;-)

Check whether there is a sortable column that you are not using for anything else. You'll find the list in your catalogue by clicking on the up and down arrow icon.

Comments would work, but there are a couple of others that could also be used if you don't need them otherwise.

You can always (mis)use the ratings feature too. Sorting by tags will be tricky because it won't rank 'highest' before 'high'. You could prefix with a number... but by then you might as well use the rating.

I wouldn't use a number in tags ... just think what happens when you get the latest book by your favourite author and want to put it at the top of your tbr pile (so moving all the others down by one). Of course, the list feature would sort that for you.

Yeah, it does sound like a list would work best for you.

But it's still a good Recommended Site Improvement since the best work around is still not very good.

This will easily work:

You can use the BCID box for numbering your books in the order you want to read them. That entry can be sorted in numerical order and will not affect anything else.

That box can be found over "member name" on the "edit page". You might have to "unhide" it, though. No, you do not have to be a BookCrossing member to use this box on LibraryThing. :)

10> That was one of the fields I was talking about.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

Adding a new favourite book without renumbering the others can be done by using 1 for least interesting, and 100 for more, with 101 for the next or 150 or something, putting sufficient numbers between.
Or using decimals.

This is the one feature I miss from Goodreads the most. It'd be quite useful for me since my "To Read" list grows quickly, with 50+ books at a time.

They even allowed you to drag and drop the order of the "To Read" books, which was very easy and convenient. Also, when you first added a book to your "To Read" list, it put it by default in the back but opened up a dialogue giving you the option to put it in automatically at #3, #7, etc.

I think I'll have to look into the List feature, as using tags is quite a kludgy solution for this.
