In honor of today being the release day of Cale Atkinson's new picture book To the Sea, I'd love to list/discuss other books about whales (and I know that's probably not very many, so talking about the ocean would be great too!), new and old.
One of my favorites is The Storm Whale by Benji Davies.
There are just a few in my personal collection:
- This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen
- Flotsam by David Wiesner
- The Sea Tiger by Victoria Turnbull
- The Mermaid and the Shoe by KG Campbell
What whale/ocean-themed books do you have? What are your favorites?

I have two Jonah and the Whale books. The Usborne book has nice drawings. But the one I love to look at is Jonah's Trash...God's Treasure because the illustrations are made of found objects. They are amusing and absorbing.
Other than that, The Wizard's Daughter lives in a castle under the sea, and her faithful dog has a dorsal fin.

How about A Big Guy Took My Ball!? My son and I love Willems, especially his Elephant and Piggie books, and this one *does* have a whale in it...

These are all wonderful additions! Thanks all!
I just found The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler (the duo who created The Gruffalo). It looks great. I'll have to pick it up and check it out.

I see I missed getting the touchstone correct for The Wizard's Daughter by Chris Conover, so here is one of the illustrations.

Baby Beluga!!! I know the origin is a song but my daughter really liked the book.
Over in the Ocean is another favorite.

Dear Mr. Blueberry by Simon James is an adorable picturebook told in letters from a small girl who claims to have spotted a whale in a fishpond; greenpeace write back to argue politely about it. (It was dear greenpeace in the uk which explains why wretched brackets didn't work... aaaand they still don't)

Since this thread has resurfaced, much like a whale itself, I must add If you Want to See a Whale by Julie Fogliano.

Twelve Daring Grays by Nora Nickum, illustrated by Elly MacKay

The Whale's Song by Dyan Sheldon used to be a standard years ago. I preferred Little Whale by McGovern, which was an edutainment type nonfic picturebook with luminous art..

There's an artist called Ahpornsiri who did a book called Beneath the Waves She makes images out of dried flowers and seaweed she has beachcombed. The result is gorgeous (imo)
Another artist Helene Druvert does big blockish stylised chunky images ; she did a nonfic picturebook called Ocean in English (she's french)
