Bumping this up as 2016 approaches.

I'm also adding an author to the 1916 list:

Jessie Kesson

Some references have her as born in 1915, but she wasn't on that list, so I'll put her here.

>3 baswood: I sympathize completely.

There are many other authors born in 1916, as there are many other books, published in 1916.

According to LT "Common Knowledge" the catalogue of LibraryThing has at least 479 books (with some doubles) listed as published in 1916.

On Lists, I have created a list, named: First published in 1916.

In this list, I have made a selection of 50 books (out of 479), which were published in 1916. I have onlt added books that I think are still often read, such as by authors whose other books I regularly see reviewed by members on Club Read.

If you want to dig deeper, you can take a plunge in the Common Knowledge data yourself.

The same could be done for books published in 1816, etc.

First published in 1916:

>7 edwinbcn: That will be my spur to finish Petersburg. Thanks for the list. It's an interesting mix of currents of interest on the part of the authors.

I've arrived here via Trollope and have joined up for 2016.

The following writers were born in 1916. None of them are literary giants. I've read many Beckwiths (light and amusing, semi-biographical), a few Ellins, and an occasional Davis.

Lillian Beckwith who wrote The Hills is Lonely, the first in a series about the Scottish Highlands.
Stanley Ellin, American crime novelist who wrote The Eighth Circle
Morris West, Australian writer of best sellers, including The Shoes of the Fisherman
Dorothy Salisbury Davis. American writer of crime novels
Gordon Merrick wrote fiction featuring gay men. His best known book was The Lord Won't Mind

Do we have a dedicated thread for Walker Percy yet or have I overlooked it? I read an interesting article today, marking his birthday, which says that Peter Handke translated The moviegoer, so I'm trying to make time for it in June.

>10 MissWatson: There doesn't appear to be one. Perhaps you could create one. He was certainly an interesting writer and man of his time.

>12 MissWatson: I may get around to it later in June. I would like to get my hands on a book first, to get an idea of him as an author. My local library doesn't have any of them, and my bookmooching site
