We did a gem of a job closing out 2015 and meeting our goal so I thought maybe we should be rewarded with a gem for the month. The ticker thread https://www.librarything.com/topic/208665) is filling up and we already have pledges of over 2,000 books.
Again, this year I ask that if you are participating, please create a ticker and post it in the ticker thread so that I can gather all the monthly numbers in an efficient manner.

This year the password for the ticker is ROOTS. If you want to update this group ticker, feel free, just be sure to update your own as well.
Here is the list of those that have joined this year. If your name isn't on the list, be sure to set your goal and signup at the digger thread (https://www.librarything.com/topic/208668).

Okay, everybody get out there and read those ROOTs!
ETA: GOAL for January is 317!
There are currently 148 participants with goals defined so that equals about 3 books a person. Some will do more others 1 will be hard but everybody needs to work on their ROOTs - myself included.
3clue
I decided to start the year with a gentle read and have finished The Village School by Miss Read.

I'm done with my first: San Rafael, Camba Town. All tickers updated.
Here's to another great year of ROOTing!

Finished my first ROOT yesterday. A Royal Pain by Rhys Bowen. Fun. Updating all tickers.

I love the gem, Cheli. I must get off the computer and get my first book finished. I am excited to be starting afresh and every book I own is in the selection.

>3 clue: I've got that on my wishlist. Did you enjoy it?
11Jackie_K
I finished my first ROOT this morning, North by Seamus Heaney. I've updated my own and the group tickers.

Love the monthly gem theme! I'm inspired. :)

I'm back and back in the land of connectivity. I will head on over and set up my threads and get my goal for the year set up. I did much better last year as I concentrated on reading stuff off of my shelves so went way over my goal for the year. I hope to do as well this year.
15MissWatson
Love the intro picture! I'm just catching up with threads, and then off to ROOTing...
16Jackie_K
My 2nd ROOT is now added to both my and the group's tickers. Don't be impressed, it's a ROOT that was abandoned rather than finished - the first turkey I've read for a while. All I can say is Auld Acquaintance by Ruth Hay - don't bother!
18leslie.98
>16 Jackie_K: I am toying with the idea of abandoning my current ROOT - Madame Bovary. I am really not enjoying it but it is such a famous book, I hesitate to give up.
19cyderry
>18 leslie.98: I know exactly where you are coming from on Madame Bovary. I fought through it, but I didn't ever find a redeeming factor for the book's ranking as a classic.
20majkia
>18 leslie.98: I'm all for abandoning what isn't working for us. I have a healthy skepticism toward 'critics' who seem to think what appeals to them ought to appeal to everyone.
21Jackie_K
>18 leslie.98: Abandoning a book is something I don't do very often - it feels like I'm breaking The Rules. I think what is helping me this time is wanting to seriously reduce Mt TBR, and awareness that I'm just not getting any younger! Life is too short!
22connie53
>18 leslie.98:, >21 Jackie_K: completely agreeing with Jackie. Live is to short to read books you don't enjoy. Even if people say it's a must read. I have never read any Shakespeare or Dickens or other people to 'have' to read. I read what I like.
23torontoc
I agree- put it away- you might come back to the book -or maybe not.
I gave myself permission this year to stop reading books that I wasn't happy with.

25clue
Well we're on a roll...I've stopped reading a book too! The title is The Search for Gainsborough by Adrienne Corri who was a well known actress in the 60s and 70s. This book is nonfiction and about a painting she found in an old and somewhat rundown theater. She was certain it was an early Gainsborough and the book is about her efforts to prove that. Before I started it I went to the internet to read about her and also saw a website about the sale of this painting in recent years. Long story short there were a few dealers who thought there might be a possibility it was a Gainsborough but none that were certain and when it sold it went for a fraction of what she thought it was worth. While the painting was still in the theater Corri cleaned it and then started working on it's provenance on her own. Later she sued the owner for nonpayment of her labor and in an out of court settlement she was given the painting. After I had read all of this and then gone back to the book I realized it wasn't going to tell me any more than I had read online and I ditched it. I was not overly impressed with Corri's style and she came across as rather arrogant.
26Carmenere
>18 leslie.98: I'm ever the optimist, always hoping that a Ho hum book will become enjoyable so I rarely give up on a book. That said, life is too short to squander time reading a book that doesn't suit you at the moment. Toss it and move on.

I am going to hijack the thread for a minute because I want to add to all those TBR piles, shelves, and boxes of books with this announcement.
Librarything is giving away free passes to the American Library Association winter meeting. The conference will be held in Boston, MA starting this coming Friday, January 8, 2016 and ending on Monday, January, 11, 2016. The passes will get you into the exhibit hall.
Here is the link for the free passes to ALA Boston. They are courtesy of the LT Goddess Abby Blachley.
https://www.compusystems.com/servlet/ar?evt_uid=314&oi=1Trx3hK26xzHoIiGjo9vo...
That's the link to use for free exhibit-only passes!
Best,
Abby
You have to have a lanyard and name tag to get into the exhibit hall. To do that you will take the printed out pass from the above link to the registration area. Go to the line that says Exhibits Only Passes. Once you get that name tag you can then go to the exhibit hall. The pass will be good for all three days of the conference. The passes will not get you in anywhere else but the exhibits. You can get a special pass if you are handicapped, otherwise wheeled apparatus' of any kind are not allowed on the exhibit hall floor.
The exhibit hall is a big wonderland of free, or very reduced price books, and all other things library. The publishers will be giving away ARC (Advance Reader's Copies) of books that will be published between January 2016 to June 2016. They will often sell books as well. Usually paperbacks will be $5.00 and hardbacks will be $10.00. If you are unsure if the books are free or not, just ask one of the sales reps in the booths. They will be happy to help you - but remember that the booths can get quit crowded and so the sales reps can't give you their undivided attention.
I would recommend that if you want to attend that you come on Saturday or Sunday, as those will be full days in the exhibit hall. There will be authors galore on those two days. There will be adult, YA, and children's authors. In the last few years it seems that there are more and more children's authors who will be signing books, but there will be plenty of both. Many of these authors will be new and unknown authors who the publishers want librarians to get to know and then push their books to the public. Often publishers will have free books that the authors will sign for you.
You will get a book that will guide you around the various exhibits in the hall. The exhibits are grouped by type so the book publishers will be in one area, the graphic novel publishers in another. Please take the time to visit the LT booth and talk with Tim and Abbey. They love to hear from LT members.
You can bring suitcases and check them at the bag check. You can't take rolling cases into the exhibit hall without a special pass. You can go in and out of the exhibit hall once you have the name tag, so you can use the suitcases to store your swag and books while you go back to the exhibit floor for more ARC's. (Ask Joe about how many trips he has made in the past to the bag check area!)
I will be around, but have a busy day lined up for Saturday, as I have committee meetings and have a big meeting scheduled for that day. If you want to get me, please e-mail me at this address. bstrnad@ua.edu I will be checking my e-mail while at the conference. You can also post to my profile page here on LT. I will check it when I can do so.
I would love to meetup with any LT members who will be in Boston. Coffee late in the afternoon is great as my feet and shoulders hurt by the end of the day on Sunday. I will also be free for lunch on Monday, but let me know via e-mail if you would like to meetup and I will be happy to do so.

I have finished my first ROOT of the year which isn't a comic, but instead, a book!
Jules Verne: Voyage au centre de la terre (Journey to the Center of the Earth)
This was placed on my TBR pile at this same time last year so it seemed like a good time to take it off the pile. A delightful, quick read that I managed in three reading sessions.

I'm not sure I understand this correctly and since I'm new here I want to make sure I'm doing things right so I have to ask - does everyone update the counter in this thread in addition to their own counters? Or does someone go through the counter thread at the end of every month and tally them together? The first post seems to suggest both, but doesn't that lead to possible double entries? I'm sorry, this is probably obvious to everyone else.
36connie53
You can ask anything you want to ask.
Answer: you can choose to just update your own ticker. Make sure it's in the ticker thread and in your own thread (but I think you did that, according to my excel spreadsheet).
Cyderry/Chèli checks that thread.
You can update the group ticker too, if you want to. Chèli is very good at keeping track of things. Even if people have no ticker she somehow manages to do so. Some people don't feel at ease with tickers so they just mention it in this thread. But you have to mention a ROOT finished. It would help if one counts the read ROOT's by saying: this is ROOT 34 for the year when it is posted without having an own ticker.
I think Chèli has an enormous spreadsheet.

Because I made the decision to count only print books owned this year, and not all books owned, my progress is going to be a lot slower. This morning, I finished my first owned book of the year and was about to add it to my ticker when I realized that, as a Kindle book, I'm not counting it this year.
Still, I am carrying on with my first owned print book and may finish it by the weekend.
I'll just have to be more patient this year but the added physical space on my shelves will be nice to see, especially if I minimize my print book purchases this year.

>35 nerwende: Some people like to see the group ticker move along so they will update it as well as their own ticker. It's not required. At the end of each month I go through the ticker thread and individual threads for those with no ticker and update my spreadsheet with each person's year-to-date total and then I adjust the group ticker as needed.
Do whatever you feel comfortable with.

I think I'm right in saying that it helps Cheli if we indicate when we post on this thread if we've updated both tickers or just our own, that helps avoid double counting.
42Carmenere
I've finished my 2nd ROOT of the year and I updated both tickers. It's easy, don't be afraid.

I just stayed up till 4 in the morning to finish reading -- or rather, I started reading to just read 50 pages before going to bed and found myself turning the next page and the next till suddenly reading 47 more pages really didn't seem like much so here I am reporting myself reading 147 pages to go from the half point of the book to the end of the book. I just found myself very gripped by Henri Troyat's La tete sur les epaules. Highly recommended although upon checking Amazon, it seems only his biographies, and not his works of fiction are translating into English. Considering he's not an author I had heard of before I'm not too surprised. But recommended to any French readers.
And that is my second ROOT of the year.
And that is my second ROOT of the year.
63CurrerBell
Just finished my first ROOT of the year, but it's a doorstopper: Norman Mailer's Harlot's Ghost (4****), quite as good as Of a Fire on the Moon (4****) but not comparable to Mailer's 5***** masterpieces, The Naked and the Dead and The Executioner's Song. I'd started Harlot's Ghost in December as part of the Reading Through Time group's Modern History time-period quarterly read, but most of it was read since the New Year and I'm counting by books finished. Only other book read so far this year is a Kindle that I don't have in treeware, so it doesn't count.
I've got a few more from last year to finish up, but I'll first be ROOTing through some other off-the-shelf treeware for the Reading Through Time group, one of which may also be a Virago read.
ETA: To avoid conflicts and confusion, I'm going to leave the Group Ticker at the top of this thread alone throughout my ROOTing. I've updated my Individual Ticker, though, and I'm leaving it to the Group Meister to handle the Group Ticker.

I like the % percentage ticker because I use it to compare to my personal %. It's an incentive to stay in step with the group.

I like it, and it doesn't require any mathing whatsoever. Both tickers require you just put in the number of books, but the % one has a handy little box ticked which says 'display as percentage'.
I can live without it though. I just liked having another number which helped visualise how far/close we were.

In fact, the percentage ticker was even easier than the regular ticker, last year at least, since we didn't have to add the password. The percentage one would just pop up automatically when I clicked on it.

Okay, for now I think I have everyone account for.
There are 73 members of the 81 that joined that have set their goals - 10 still need to create their tickers (if they are going to) or copy their tickers to the ticker thread. We have 6 members that have yet to set their goals and I am ashamed to say 2 members who I can't figure out who they are so that I can contact them.
I have updated the opening post for January to reflect the newest additions to the group. If your name isn't on the list, please let me know.

Hi all ROOTers, I'm afraid I've messed up on the ticker thread so asking for help. First, I found my 2015 ticker and copied it there but could not figure out how to edit it for starting over so I created a new ticker and now both are there together. I tried to delete last year's ticker and it didn't work. Befuddled.
Also a question. Should I have my own page/thread? If so how is that done?
Appreciate any help here.

>97 mhmr: on the ticker thread message #69 click where it says More and you will see a Delete and just delete the message.
No problem. But I don't a goal on the new ticker.
In the future, just for everyone's information, (I've done what mhmr did,) and what you can do is edit the message and paste the new ticker in place of the old.

>97 mhmr: You can make your own thread by going to the group page
There you can see all the threads other members have started.
Just above that list you will find 'start a new subject/thread' on the left. (I don't know what it says in English, so this is freely translated from Dutch.) Click on that. Fill in the name you want to give your thread using your member name in it. (easy for cyderry to work with)
And start your own thread by telling us what you want to do and include your ticker if you like.
You can read other threads first if you need ideas.
Need any more help? Just ask.

cyderry and connie53 Thanks for the help. When I got back there the new ticker was gone so I just updated the old one. I must have deleted the new one in all my confusion.
Anyway, on to the actual reading...

ROOT #6 was an audio short (22 minutes) of Maya Angelou reciting some of her poetry - it is so short I debated not counting it but decided since it is a title in my Audible library, it is a "book" even if it is a very short one!
I have updated my thread & all tickers. I hope that I have been updating the group tickers all along but am suddenly not sure -- my ticker is correct but I am uncertain about the group ones. Hope I haven't made a mess of things...

First ROOT for me this year (and first book at all) was The Year I Met You. As all books by Cecelia Ahern I liked it very much. I only wasn't so thrilled by the last two or so pages. She kind of wrote down everything again that was the moral of the book, instead of letting it stamd for its own. I think everyone could have figured that out on their own.

Two ROOTs so far...I got distracted by sequels for my first ROOT, Fortress in the Eye of Time...
111sallylou61
I have finished reading my 4th ROOT -- When Books Went to War by Molly Guptill Manning -- an excellent book. More description on my thread.
My ticker (copied into ticker file) updated.

Second ROOT finished, Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists of Avalon. I'm getting a slow start, but both my books so far have been doorstoppers.
115lilisin
>114 CurrerBell:
I really loved that book. The trilogy was fantastic but The Mists of Avalon is the standout.

116CurrerBell
>115 lilisin: I'm not going on to the trilogy only because I don't have the rest of the books and my priority for this year is ROOT, not buying more. Incidentally, another ROOT I'm currently reading is The Language of the Goddess by Marija Gimbutas, which as nonfiction "archeomythology" ties in with Bradley's goddess themes.

For all my LT friends who are expecting a visit from JONAS, here's hoping you can just sit back with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book in a cozy place with those you love safe and warm.

>125 fuzzi: Hasn't started here yet. We are estimated to receive somewhere around 2 FEET of snow, so I'm expecting an indulgence of books and hot chocolate. I might get my wine cellar inventoried as well.
127connie53
I hope everything will turn out all right for everybody over there. It sounds awful. Hang in there, stay warm and read books.
128Carmenere
>126 cyderry: I heard on the noon news that folks in the DC area have 2 hours to find the place they intend to stay for the entire weekend. Hope all affected have found that place and it's loaded with books, tea, cocoa and wine.
129Jackie_K
>126 cyderry: Wine cellar inventory-ing sounds like a marvellous way to spend a few hours of a snow day! Hope you are all safe, warm and have all your supplies to hand.
130torontoc
For all of you LT people who are in the path of the storm- I hope that you have batteries for flashlights, some water,food- canned, and hopefully a battery powered or wind up radio. ( experience from the big Toronto storm two years ago- we had power gone)
131Robertgreaves
Did you see the ROOT challenge made the State of the Thing newsletter?
133Robertgreaves
The State of the Thing archives are here but the January issue doesn't seem to have been archived yet. I get them by email.
134Familyhistorian
I finished my 5th ROOT and finally updated my ticker so that should help the January totals. My last ROOT was the first book in a promising new mystery series The Devil's Music. I also have 4 or 5 ROOTS on the go for various challenges and I am hoping to finish them by the end of January (fingers crossed.)
135connie53
>133 Robertgreaves: it looks like that newsletter did it's work. There are so many new members. I counted at least 15 of them. I hope they all will stay and participate.

Yes, I think the newsletter was good PR for our group! I joined in 2014 after seeing a post on LT's facebook page about the ROOT group. I haven't seen anything similar this year though.

ROOT #3 finished last night. Both tickers here and my personal ticker have been updated.

Finished my third ROOT for the month, one of the Malazan tomes. Excellent. Updating all tickers.
141HelenBaker
Another root for me. Off to update tickers and threads.
143Dejah_Thoris
Number three for me - all tickers updated.
144CurrerBell
Number 3: Nicola Griffith, Hild. My ticker updated but I'm leaving the group ticker to the groupmeister.
145cyderry
To all our newest members - if you have set a goal, please be sure to create a ticker and copy it into your own personal thread as well as the group ticker thread - http://www.librarything.com/topic/208665

I can add another 2 to the months tally. Trying for one more. Updating tickers.

Yay! Moved it .1%.

I just started ROOT #4, The Angry Hills by Leon Uris. At 180+ pages, I know I can get this one done quickly!

I'm not expecting to add any more ROOTs this month although I may add a couple more Non ROOTs. However, I am going away for Sunday and Monday, so here is my report for January 2016 a little bit early:
UpROOTED books: 5
ROOTless books: 2
Added to the TBR shelves: 0
The ROOTs were:
The First Man In Rome by Colleen McCullough
The Mammoth Book of Historical Whodunits: Volume 1 compiled by Mike Ashley

A Drink of Deadly Wine by Kate Charles
ROOTs in YTD: 5
Personal and group tickers have been adjusted, but hopefully not harmed.

I had a really good month in clearing my shelves and since the two books I have going now are behemoths I won't have any more for this month. I had 8 ROOTS. No tickers.

I am finishing up my January challenges and they were all ROOTs this month. I will update my ticker with my final monthly number by the end of the weekend.

ROOT number 6 for me and I should have one more finished by tomorrow. Updating tickers.

I ran through the gates of 2016 and read 4 books the first half of January then got distracted by other extracurricular activities in the second half but I'm very much on pace! All tickers are correct.
184Familyhistorian
I hope you are enjoying your trip, Cheli. It worked well for me as it allowed me to post my 8th ROOT for this month. I just squeaked in my January book for the CAC.
185CurrerBell
I only got through THREE for January, but two of them, Harlot's Ghost and The Mists of Avalon, are doorstoppers and the third, Hild, was a really tedious read.
Should do better in February since I've got several ROOTs already started or even close to finishing. And I may do some middle-reader and YA quick reads.
My own personal ticker is correctly updated but I leave the group ticker to the groupmeister to avoid lousing things up.

Oops - this is my first time in this group and I hadn't starred this thread, so I just found it. I added my 11 ROOTs for January to the group ticker.
I'm still a little unsure after reading these posts - is it better to update the group ticker ourselves? Or will the info eventually be taken from our individual tickers? I don't want to cause duplicate entries.

>186 madhatter22: I don't really know how Chèli/Cyderry does the maths. But I update my own tickers and both the group tickers. And Chèli gives us a list each month with our personal number of ROOTS. If that is incorrect you can tell that in the progress thread for the month. And she will adjust it.
188lilisin
>186 madhatter22:
Cheli automatically updates both of the group tickers at the end of each month after checking all the members' individual tickers and tallying them together. (That is why it is much easier on her if everyone has a ticker.)
You are welcome to update the group tickers yourself throughout the month as you go through your ROOTs as it is fun to track the overall progress and see how we are doing. But you are not required to do this.
