password = ROOTSWe 've started out great! There are so many new members in the ROOT group, and I welcome them all. Together we surpassed the needed number of ROOTs for January and are off to a great start!
But we need to keep the momentum rolling, so look over those shelves and take some ROOTs for February.
Below is a list of the members that have identified a ROOT goal for 2016 and how many books they read in January.
The percentage is calculated and a star awarded for those on target to reach their goals. More stars for farther toward their goal.
If there is © next to your name, I see a ticker on your thread that is not in the ticker thread. If you could copy the code to the Ticker thread it would be a huge help each month.
If anyone's number is incorrect, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments.
The group goal for February is 667
So go out there and dig those ROOTs.

Wow, wonderful. If there is any way we can help, Cheli, with all the new members or with stats or anything else, please let us know!
3Jackie_K
Can I just ask a dim question? (not about anything particularly important!). You say that the group goal for February is 644, do you mean by that that between us we need to have read 644 books in the month of February, or do you mean that the ticker has to reach 644 by the end of Feb (ie including the 431 that is already there) and so we need actually to read 213 between us this month?
6connie53
I think it's the last option, Jackie. Otherwise we would read more than a 1000 books in the first two months and that would be almost 1/4 of the group total for the whole year.
7CurrerBell
I just finished Sylvia Townsend Warner's The Corner That Held Them (5*****), a gift from my Virago Elf from Christmas. Sort of reminds me a bit of Rumer Godden's In This House of Brede, except that it's got a lot of comedy and humor that's lacking to Godden.
It's my fourth of the year, but it really is a holdover from January. I only have about 35 pages to finish.

8connie53
>7 CurrerBell: I always let them count in the month I finish the book.
9CurrerBell
>8 connie53: That's how I'm doing it too. It gets too complicated trying to apportion one month to another. (Actually, though, I have occasionally given myself credit on a Reading Through Time theme-read if I finish a relevant book just a day or two after the month's end.)
10connie53
>9 CurrerBell: I would do that too. So I won't tell anyone
11cyderry
>3 Jackie_K: Connie is correct, we need the ticker to reach 644 by the end of February. So 212 still need to be read in February - we even get an extra day! That equals a little more than 2 books per person for those that have indicated a goal.
12MissWatson
Thanks for doing the numbers, Chèli! Looks like we're on a roll!

Another ROOT. Tickers updated.

I woke at 4:00 AM this morning so I read, dozed, read, dozed and by 9:00 had finished a ROOT, House Made of Dawn by N. Scott Momaday.

We're doing awesome! Yeah!
& Welcome to all new members! :)
I can't believe someone is already over 50% just from January! Way to go Okrysmastree!
Thanks always for all your hard work, Chèli!
(And my personal update - I'm still working on Chunky ROOT #2, which is "only" just under 800 pages, but the font is small & close together... a bit of a dense read, in the physical sense. BUT it's awesome and totally worth it!)

I read Life and Death by Andrea Dworkin and The Basque Hotel by Robert Laxalt.
I read them in January but I updated the tickers today, my personal ticker and the February group ticker.
Wonder if I should have updated the January group ticker instead, at this late date?
Also, please remind me how to do the blue touchstones for member's names. I tried both kinds of brackets but neither produced results.
Sorry to be such a pest!

Hi Mel,
First of all: questions about how things go, are never a pest. ;-))
Here is the ticker solution: They move from the January thread to the February so they change where ever you update them.
About the touchstones you use > with the number of the post you are referring too
Like this: >23 mhmr:
Or do you mean something else?

All tickers updated.
City of Golden Shadow was wonderful! Will probably be adding the 2nd heavy tome to my shortlist sooner than originally anticipated (fortunately it is also a chunky root ;))

>37 connie53: I worded that badly, sorry. Also having tried to re-word my question 4 times now, I believe I'm just trying to make something simple too complicated :P - so instead I'm just going to ask one thing which I think will clear this up for me: is the maximum available number of stars 10?
55cyderry
>54 nerwende: The maximum stars is 5. If you are on target to finish your challenge in December you get 1 star, if you are 1 month ahead you get 2 stars, 2 months ahead 3 stars, 3 months ahead you get 4 stars and 4 months or more ahead of target, you get 5 stars.
I started to award the stars last year, so that people could see if they were on target to reach their goal or ahead of the target, or behind.
It wasn't meant as a bad thing but to encourage everyone to stay on course so that we could our goal together.

I'm in the middle of a in Japanese book and at the beginning of a longer book so to make sure I manage to post some ROOTs this month, I read a manga last night. All tickers updated.
71CurrerBell
>70 lilisin: I'm including some YA and middle-reader this month to get my total boosted. Last month I only had three, but two of them were doorstoppers and the third was a heavy, tedious read. I've also got some leftovers from last month that I'm partway through, so getting them finished should give me a nice overall job for February.
72Henrik_Madsen
ROOT #6 for the year is done. William Shakespeare: Henry VI is not one of his best plays, but the lines are laid out for Richard III
Tickers will be updated shortly.
Tickers will be updated shortly.
73CurrerBell
>72 Henrik_Madsen: Actually, there are three "Henry VI" plays – Henry VI, Part 1, Henry VI, Part 2, and Henry VI, Part 3 – so if you read all three you should be able to claim three ROOTs.

I got in a non-reading rut the last week or so, but I'm back, and reading two ROOTs at the same time. I expect to finish them tomorrow or Thursday.
75Henrik_Madsen
>73 CurrerBell: I know, and I read all three of them. They are contained in one volume (with three other plays) so it's a question of how you define a ROOT. I settled for one now, but might revise it later if my goal becomes unattainable... ;-)

I can add 6 ROOTs read so far in February, all tickers updated.

How are our newest members doing? Are you all finding any gems in the books that have been waiting so long?

Finished my second ROOT for the year and first for February. The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst. All tickers updated.
87CurrerBell
I have EIGHT so far for February and I'm expecting to finish at least a couple more. With my THREE from January, that will put me on course for my goal of 75 for the year. Note that January's three included two doorstoppers and a third that was a rather tedious read. I've compensated for this in February with some shorter books, and I'll also be finishing up some that I started in January.
My own ticker is updated but I leave messing with the group ticker for the groupmeister.

89klarusu
>88 Robertgreaves: It took me by surprise. I also had it on my shelves for a long time and shied away from picking it up because I thought it might not be my 'thing' but Hollighurst really won me over. I think it's his characterisation and the subtle social interaction that he conveys so well. I'd definitely recommend picking it up! It took me a little while to get into it but once I did, I flew.

I have slowed down a bit in my ROOTs reading this month but I am reading even if I haven't updated my thread yet. I have this coming week off work and hope to get caught up with things and maybe finish some more of the pile of ROOTs that I have on the go.

My ticker was updating (I cross use it on another site), but I wasn't logging what made up that jump! +6 ROOTs so far this month, but I expect that to dive down in March as there's 3 ARCs patiently waiting their turn.

I've read 3 ROOTs in February, so I'm up to 4 so far. One of the three is from the list of 9 I proposed for myself, but as I inventory my shelves and just look around, I'm discovering wonderful books I forgot I had, so have read two additional ROOTs.
96streamsong
I'm slogging away at the ultimate ROOT by having joined The War and Peace group read. My numbers are taking a hit, but I figure it's better to do this in the first part of the year when I have lots of time to make up lost ground.

I'll be lucky if I make it to 4 ROOTs this month - in my defense though, book #4 is a bit of a long one! The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco is 512 pages and I'm at page 78 right now; I think I can do it if I push. :)

I'm splitting my time between a new book (Leviathan Wakes) and a ROOT, Three's a Pack, the latter by one of my favorite authors, Joyce Stranger. I should finish my ROOT in the next day or two, although Leviathan Wakes is gripping, and probably will demand most of my reading time this week.

GA State Age-Group Swim Championships took up all Fri-Sun. but due to lots of driving, I was able to start a CD book and make progress. Our Kind of Traitor is another fine example of John le Carre's unchallenged mastery of the espionage novel. Robin Sachs' voice performance (not just narration) is exactly right. This will be a pleasure to "read."
109lindapanzo
>108 Limelite: Your state age group championships are quite a bit earlier than ours in Illinois. Is this club or high school?
My 15-year old niece has regional championships this weekend and, if she can somehow manage a state-qualifying time, her state senior championships would be March 3 to 6 (age group champs, which no longer apply to her now that she's 15, are March 10 to 13.
I do get quite a bit of reading in at swim meets during the lulls but this past Sunday, I didn't read much in my mystery short stories book. There were only 2 or 3 heats per event so it was pretty quick.

I've sat at my current desk at work for over 10 years and, during that time, I finish books at lunch and tend to drop them wherever. During the next month or so, we've been asked to do a thorough cleaning/pruning of everything, in advance of a relocation within the building.
Long story short, I'll be getting rid of a lot of old books that have accumulated over the years, which will greatly add to my ROOT totals.

>114 fuzzi: I'll probably donate to the library friends for fundraising.
Unless it's a mystery. I'll give those to an LTer (she knows who she is, ahem--we need to get together soon).
Some are actually unread and I'll want to take those home. Every summer, our company charitable committee holds a used book sale fundraiser. One year, I bought a bunch of Donna Leon mysteries. I've been reading this series lately and I thought I had numbers 4, 5, and 6 in the series at home. I suspect they're around here somewhere...

Isn't that a question we all ask ourselves every time we are in the area of books?

I keep telling myself "There are starving children in Africa, you know". It mainly keeps me from handing over money but has no effect on ebooks because they already know my credit card number.
119KLmesoftly
I thought I'd be able to ban myself from buying more books until I got my TBR pile under 10, and yet here I am in February with 6 books in my possession that I didn't own 2 months ago :| They creep in, even picked up one at a time!
120CurrerBell
>119 KLmesoftly: Well, but of course there's the new Library of America volume of Henry James: Autobiographies that just came out a few weeks ago. And there's Constance Fenimore Woolson: Portrait of a Lady Novelist that just came out this week. And B&N sends me those discount coupons, and I mustn't waste them....
ETA: But I really am trying to get it under control. Just buying B&N when I get a coupon. Well, but of course, there are those used book stores. But really, I read more ROOTs than I bring in noobs, so that's something, isn't it?

>120 CurrerBell: Justifications like these are how we ended up here in the first place! I can relate though, especially passing a used book store with a 50 cent cart sitting right out front that I pass every day...after all, I am only human.

>122 jen.e.moore: I'm trying! I've moved a lot in the past couple of years and have had to cull a lot of things so my owned-but-not-read pile has naturally been in the 30-50 range for the most part. It helps that I don't like to buy ebooks, too. ;)

Just finished ROOT #4 for February, total of 10 so far in 2016. My personal ticker is updated, too. :)
126HelenBaker
I finished another at 1a.m. this morning. Couldn't sleep so at least I achieved something in the wee hours. Updating tickers.
127HelenBaker
There is a big discrepancy in the tickers. I decided not to touch the percentage one in case there is a mistake. We seem to be well ahead of our goal which looks great.
128fuzzi
Woo! I spent the day reading, and added two more ROOTs for February, total of 6 for this month!
129MissWatson
I can add two more, my own ticker is updated, didn't touch the group ones this time..
130ipsoivan
>128 fuzzi: 2 in one day?? Wow!
131LadyBookworth
Have just updated my personal ticker. Left the group one alone. Not tech enough...:+}
This month read a total of 4 books.
Next month need to read a "door stopper"!!

Feel ashamed to not have even one ROOT to report as uprooted for February. Must find a way to read more. I used to be so good at just reading and letting the chips fall where they may! But seems I have less and less time to myself these days as I spend more and more of it with an ailing mate who is at home most of the day these days. And with his upcoming knee surgery will it get easier or harder to find time for my self.
Will try harder in March to finish some books.

Final total for the month: 4 ROOTs, 8 non-ROOTs!
My ROOTs:
Let the Great World Spin - Colum McCann
On Such a Full Sea - Chang-Rae Lee
A Tale for the Time Being - Ruth Ozeki
The Name of the Rose - Umberto Eco
Hopefully I can match that in March and keep whittling down my to-read pile faster than I'm buying new books!

Okay, finished one more!
Personal thread and ticker updated .
Group ones not touched.
Happy reading all!

I finished 6 ROOTS this month with a cumulative total of 13 for the year. I have updated my personal ticker but not the group tickers.

I finished one more for the month at 11.55p.m last night. Just in the nick of time. Updating tickers.
143CurrerBell
Finished a total of 14 for February, which gives me a total of 17 for the year. (Two in January were doorstoppers and the third was a tedious read.)
I just finished one more around 1:15am this morning, but that one's credited toward March.
My own ticker's updated, but as always I leave the group ticker for the groupmeister.

Just updated one more (read in Feb) to my personal thread only, bringing my total to 12. I need to get my butt in gear this month!
146Jackie_K
I've got one more February ROOT to add. I updated my own ticker, and the first of the group tickers. However, the numbers in the two tickers don't tally (if it helps, the first ticker (number of books) now reads 707 which includes mine, but the second one (%) reads 705 (which doesn't include mine)). I hope I explained that clearly enough that it's not mucked things up! :/
147Familyhistorian
I finished a total of 5 ROOTs for February. I hope to do better in March but it is hard to find books on my shelves to fit all the challenges.
148lilisin
>146 Jackie_K:
A lot of people forget to update the second ticker when they update the first. If that happens, just have the second ticker match what the first says. It doesn't matter in the end since cyderry reworks the tally again at the end of the month.
---
Really, we need an FAQ thread.

I hope that everyone has updated their tickers or personal threads. I'm calculating numbers!

I can't find anything. I'd like to include it in the numbers for February.

I always update my personal ticker but am a bit confused regarding whether I should be updating the group one? Some people seem to and some don't. Doesn't that get confusing for cyderry?
153lilisin
>152 Soupdragon:
It doesn't matter whether people update the group ticker in the end since cyderry reworks the tally again at the end of the month. So it does not affect her.
The only reason to update the group ticker during the month is so that we can visually see our progress. You don't have to update it if you don't want to.

>152 Soupdragon: I don't think so, Dee. Chèli is probably using excel to keep track of the numbers. And the total of the personal tickers should be the same as in both the group tickers. But not everybody uses a ticker (or updates them regularly). So in the first post of every monthly thread there is a list of all ROOTers with the numbers. If you think your number is wrong just tell Chèli and everything gets adjusted.

I didn't have time to report yesterday , but I have four (4) ROOTS for February. No tickers updated.
158moonshineandrosefire
Hello everyone! My February was pretty good - I only read one less ROOT than last year, but I suppose that's not too bad! In keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for February:

Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 4
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 1
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 4
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 11
