BIG FAT BOOK CHALLENGE 2016 TOTALS

Post on here the BIG FAT BOOKS you have read.

1. Started in 2015 but finished in 2016. War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy Garnet Translation. 1167 pages. Just wow!

2. Der Zauberring by Friedrich de LaMotte Fouqué. 647 pages.

3. Queen of fire by Anthony Ryan. 637 pages.

Harlot's Ghost by Norman Mailer (4****), just about 1300 pages, finished Jan 9 having read about 200 pages last year.

5. The Grace of Kings, by Ken Liu ; 618 pages.

6. Daniel Deronda by George Eliot 896 pages of pure pleasure, sorrow, and grief. This is by far the best of her works!

7. The Small House at Allington by Anthony Trollope. 665 pages.

8. The Complete Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: Paul Revere's Ride, The Song of Hiawatha, Evangeline, Christus: A Mystery, The Masque Of Pandora and More by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 2270 pages read (1 year to read).

9. Marion Zimmer Bradley, The Mists of Avalon (876 pp) -- finished January 20

10. The Far Pavillions by M.M. Kaye disappointed 960 pages

11. Altruism, by Matthieu Ricard ; 700 pages.

12. The last chronicle of Barset by Anthony Trollope. 771 pages.

13. The Time Quartet by Madeleine L'Engle. It's an omnibus volume of A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, and Many Waters and clocks in at 646 pages with normal size font, so I'd say it qualifies although the individual items are fairly short.

I'm also about to start on Mary Poppins 80th Anniversary Collection, an omnibus volume that includes Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins Opens the Door, and Mary Poppins in the Park and clocks in at 1020 pages. The font's a bit large, but still, the length exceeds a thousand pages so I figure the 1000+ length can make up for the larger font.

Thoughts anyone?

14. The Lake House by Kate Morton; squeaks in at just 606 pages.

15. P.L. Travers, Mary Poppins: 80th Anniversary Collection. Large font, but 1020 pages for a four-in-one volume of Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins Opens the Door, and Mary Poppins in the Park, the first four of the eight (? I think) books in the series.

16. Lorna Doone by R.D. Blackmore. 750 pages, about 200 pages of battles too much! I read the ebook, but neither touchstone will link to it. The ebook was only 750 pages, wonder what they cut out because both of the paperbacks were 800 pages!

17. A Brief History of Seven Killings, by Marlon James ; 688 pages.

18. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, 760 pages of interminable babbling!

19. Homeland by John Jakes. 1200 pages 5 star read

20. The Passage, by Justin Cronin ; 766 pages.

21. The Landmark Thucydides (ed. Robert Strassler). 625 pages when you include the appendices (which are very legitimately included since they are an invaluable feature of these "Landmark" editions). A complete total of 711 pages, but the additional pages over 625 are primarily the index.

22. In May I finished Moby Dick by Herman Melville, 896 pages, with illustrations by Rockwell Kent. There was an illustration at the beginning of each chapter, which added to the high number of pages, but made the book very readable.

23. The City of Mirrors, by Justin Cronin ; 601 pages.

24. Ruhe ist die erste Bürgerpflicht by Willibald Alexis. 1081 pages

25. The Wheel of Osheim, by Mark Lawrence ; 640 pages.

The Last Chronicle of Barset by Anthony Trollope: 714 pages

Loved all three of them and look forward to a finishing a couple more chunksters before the end of the year!

MissWatson: Which was your favorite of the Barchester Chronicles? I think Doctor Thorne was mine, although I really enjoyed all of them.

I read Of Mice and Men any years ago and reread it just a few years ago so I didn't reread that one, but even without it the read is well over 800 pages.

31. Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era by James M. McPherson; (5*); (950 pages); a reread and oh, so worth it. A very appropriate year in which to do so.
