Eh, the last one was 358 posts. (You can find it here.)

I've been missing hearing what everyone is reading. It's a great way to get book suggestions! So what is everyone reading? :)

Nov 8, 2007, 7:15 pm

I'm reading The Subtle Knife and listening to The Prestige.

Kerian, what are you reading?

3Kerian
Nov 8, 2007, 7:24 pm

Hehe. I was waiting for someone else to say first.

I'm reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (on chapter two), and The Golden Compass.

I am almost done with New Moon. Don't tell me what happens! I am in line for Eclipse at the library.

In the meantime I am going to reread Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I am allowing myself one reread a month which has been keeping me just ahead of the discussion groups. I can't limit myself to 4 chapters a week. Even though I know what is going to happen, I can't put the books down. I have recently acquired the British versions and I like reading the "real thing." Did you know they call the back of a car a "boot"? Do you think that's what they call the nose of an elephant? :)

BTW Amazon uk does not ship, it dispatches.

I'm reading this hysterical book called Storky and it cracks me up. Plus I'm reading Beauty shop for Rent but that ones a little sad

Nov 8, 2007, 8:58 pm

I've just finished rereading Dark Lord of Derkholm (which I love) for the teen discussion group I help lead, and am rereading The Golden Compass (which I am less than crazy about) for the middle-school discussion group I help lead (and because everybody else in the world is reading it. I'm about to read Number the Stars for a class.

For fun, I'm looking forward to Reader and Raelynx (which apparently doesn't touchstone) and Empire of Ivory -- both adult fiction, in series I've gotten addicted to.

And, of course, PoA with you guys!

I just started The Amber Spyglass tonight.

I want to read Betrayed by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast next.

Nov 9, 2007, 11:01 am

I just started Modoc by Ralph Helfer. It's a true story about a circus elephant. it's not the best writing (he's an animal trainer not a writer) but it's a great story.

I just finished The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray by Chris Wooding an dwould definitely recommend it.

Nov 9, 2007, 12:48 pm

I've been reading through my set of Haunted Ohio by, um *had to check last name*, Chris Woodyard. It's a set of books on the supposed hauntings all around Ohio. She's a great writer so whether or not you believe in ghosts all the books are really REALLY entertaining and funny.

Nov 9, 2007, 5:40 pm

I recently finished The Thirteenth Tale which I enjoyed immensely, Moomin: The complete Comic Strip Volume 2 which is by a fabulous Scandinavian Author Tove Jansson I think some of you would love her books about the Moomintroll family- she's popular in the rest of the world but hasn't received the appropriate noteriety in the U.S. They are whimsical and magical and funny.

I am in the midst of Sunflower by Hungarian author Gyula Krudy which is great, sort of timeless and fantastical. Of course I am still part way through Remembrance of Things Past and I was just given a copy of Growth of the Soil but haven't started it. I think I may search out a funny book next because it has been awhile since I read something funny.

I see many are reading or rereading The Dark Materials Triology. I think the movie trailers look really promising- anyone else excited?

4-compskibook - Are the differences between the US and the UK versions minimal or are they pretty distinct? If there's a drastic difference (i.e. you can really tell you're reading one vs. the other) I might look into acquiring the UK ones myself.

14compskibook
Nov 9, 2007, 7:47 pm

13 - All I have noticed are some "Americanized" words and that has only been a few in each book. I just started Goblet of Fire and she refered to Azkaban as a "gaol" which I had never heard of. If it was in the scholastic version, I completely missed it.

I guess I have to admit the main reason I got the UK editions was that they looked so cool stacked up in Kerian's Potter bookpile! I did scrimp and just buy paperbacks, though.

Here is a warning for anyone who does try buy the paperbacks: I got most through the US Amazon, but when Half Blood Prince came it was just a mass market size and smaller than the rest. At least for now, order that one through Amazon UK.

I wasn't all that thrilled with either The Golden Compass or The Subtle Knife (although I did like the second one better) so I blew off The Amber Spyglass and I'm now reading A Confederacy of Dunces. When you can't decide what to read, always pick a classic that you've missed.

This book is hilarious. Why did I wait so long?

#32 How do you like it Foggi? I love Sherman Alexie's work for grown ups (Maybe it was growing up next to a reservation but his work always feels like home somehow) I was curious to see that he'd written a book for young adults.

35foggidawn
Nov 16, 2007, 4:04 pm

#34 -- I've actually finished it already. It was a quick read, and I enjoyed it. It's a great "boy book" and there are never enough of those, so I always applaud the good ones. It reminded me a little bit of John Green's books (Looking for Alaska, An Abundance of Katherines) -- the same mix of (sometimes pretty crude) humor and really weighty stuff.

I haven't yet read anything else by Sherman Alexie, but I'll have to tack it on to my mile-long TBR list! :-)

Okay I finished Sunflower by Gyula Krudy It was sort of timeless and followed Falstaffian male characters and ethereal women very difficult to describe but I enjoyed it.

I just picked up Jakob von Gunten which is by this Swiss author who ended in an asylum needless to say it is sort of absurdist.

I also got The Late Hector Kipling by our lovely David Thewlis which seems very dark and funny in the first 10 pages.

Then I started The Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson. He's always so consistent and funny. Finally, Mistmantle which my sister sent me a fantasy with squirrels and hedghogs of course.

AR imagine an alternate world where novels are worlds of their own and the general public is passionate about books and someone can enter novels and kidnap people or change endings and there is a whole police force whose mission is to stop these villians. . . that's the closest I can come to a set up.

#92 Yes LG, I am about 80 pages in now and it is very funny in a dark way. It is sort of a send up of the art world. The main character, Hector Kipling, is an artist who is famous for painting giant heads and is jealous of his friend, a conceptual artist, who is more famous and maybe stole some of his ideas.

Kipling narrates for the most part and so you get to hear his inner monologue as well as what he actually says which is funny. It also has that quality, that Brits do so well, of having a somewhat dislikable, pathetic hero. I can already feel that Kipling is headed on a path to screwing things up but, thus far, I am enjoying watching him get there.

Lots of swearing, definitely not for the HP set. I think it has been getting good reviews overall.

96littlegeek
Nov 29, 2007, 3:35 pm

I love David Thewlis, but I am always reminded of his part in Naked. Very harrowing, horrific film, rates up there with Trainspotting for me on the "films I could never sit through again, because they are so raw" scale. Talk about not for the HP set!

It was so hard for me at first to see him as Lupin because of that film, but he does pull it off Great, great actor. I'm really interested in his book. Please review it when you're done!

Edited: Nov 29, 2007, 5:30 pm

I finished reading the last of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, The Amber Spyglass earlier today. I tried to write a review on paper since I didn't have a computer handy, but was just too upset about the news of people protesting the film of The Golden Compass and keeping kids from seeing and reading it that I couldn't much focus. Check my blog if you want to see what it is that I wrote.

I've just started reading one of Holly Black's books, called Tithe. I'm on page thirty-eight, and hope the beginning of the book is not what the rest of the book will be like. I think a change in the story is approaching, thankfully. It may be a truly wonderful book, for which I have so much more to discover about it since I'm so early in the book, I just am not fond of some of the things that have appeared in it.

Edited for spelling correction.

#96 LG I know what you mean. I didn't see Thewlis in that film but I avoid seeing actors I like in roles that might distress me. Dec 12, 2007, 9:41 pm

#145 -- I can't remember too many specifics about the trailer, just that it looked interesting. I have to admit, I'm not all that much of a fan of the book, so I'll probably be able to enjoy the movie on its own merits.

Good point about the GoF reread -- what we might do is, when enough people have reread Inkheart, start a single thread for it, or a spoiler and non-spoiler thread like the book discussion threads on The Green Dragon. That way, it's a little more flexible, as people can add to it as they read the book. I'm capable of reading a lot of different things at the same time, but I was planning on a Hobbit/LotR reread (in addition to GoF) starting after Christmas. Depending on how long that takes, I may not want to do Inkheart, so we'll see.

183 I always like to go back and reread certain books especially at certain times of year. I have been rereading Tove Jansson's Moomintroll series. They are a brilliant set of Scandinavian classic children's books that haven't seemed to catch on in the States (I think because she refused to sell the rights to Disney). #186 -- Sunshine was the worst as far as McKinley's rambling goes, though if that bothered you in Sunshine, you'll probably want to give Dragonhaven a miss, as well. However, I thought Rose Daughter was pretty good -- worth rereading. McKinley is one of my favorite authors, but her latest stuff has tended to ramble all over creation. I always recommend her earlier works to fantasy fans (The Blue Sword, The Hero and the Crown, Spindle's End, The Outlaws of Sherwood, and Beauty: a retelling of the story of Beauty and the Beast, which is one of my favorite books ever) -- so, if you've missed any of those, they're worth searching out.

When my brother and I were still at home, we would often read aloud (mostly, I would read aloud, because I enjoy doing so) on long car trips. We did at least a couple of the Harry Potter books that way (we read all of them aloud together, but sometimes at home, rather than on the road). Now that I do a lot of trips on my own, I try to remember to bring along books on CD to listen to.

I agree that it makes the time go faster. I listened to most of Mister Monday by Garth Nix today, driving home from Pennsylvania.

#190 AR I have read the Spiderwick Chronicles. I enjoyed them. They are fun, the are a little light on plot and seem to be for a slightly younger reader than Harry Potter- or maybe equivalent to book 1.

The illustrations and the concept of a book of fantasy creatures who are real are clever. I also like that the girl in the books is a fencer and that becomes useful to them. I actually think they might be a book that is improved by film because the story might be filled out a bit more. I'll be curious to see how it goes. The film trailer makes it look more intense than the books ever felt while reading them.

I'm curious to see how others felt about them

I read Ironside by Holly Black yesterday. I enjoyed it much more than Tithe and Valiant, tho I still maintain that there is approximately zero chemistry between Roiben and Kaye.

I started An abundance of Katherines by John Green this morning (well more like afternoon, anyway when I woke up). It is written with great humor and intelligence. The only thing---and I had to actually pause for a second there--is that I found the most atrocious of typos I have ever happened upon while reading a book. Page 58, a whole line is repeated. You often find the odd letter or grammatical faux pas, but this, it has changed my life, somehow. How did the editors miss that?

I found a copy of Dave Barry's Big Trouble in my stocking, and have just started it after finishing The Lincoln Lawyer for my library's mystery group. Big Trouble is about what you'd expect from a novel by Barry: good basic concept, bits of hilarity and stretches of insipidity, pages that read as if they're from one of his columns. Several laugh-out-loud moments, but not as consistently excellent as that great singer, Luciano Calamari.

How about starting the Wolves Chronicles by Joan Aiken? The first is The Wolves of Willoughby Chase.

They are a great older young adult series set in an alternate historic Britain and involve evil governesses and plots to overthrow the crown. They are a little dark like Lemony Snicket and have a great gothic British feeling to them.

266compskibook
Jan 4, 2008, 6:03 pm

Mrs G. Every since I was young I have always liked Little Men better than Little Women. It picks up a few years later, isn't as long, and moves a little faster, I think. If you are in the mood for more Alcott, that is.

Days without reading? That has never, never happened in my whole life since I was 4. I finish one book and immediately pick up the next.

269foggidawn
Jan 4, 2008, 6:47 pm

Okay, some suggestions:

I see you're read Eight Cousins by Alcott, so I would recommend the sequel, Rose in Bloom -- those are my favorite of her books; I like them better than Little Women/Little Men/Jo's Boys, though all Alcott is good.

Try The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner, and The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan -- both very good fantasy, and the beginnings of great series.

Also in fantasy, I love Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede. It is likewise the beginning of a good series.

If you like historical fiction, Ann Rinaldi is a good author to look for.

All of the above are children's or teen books, since that's my specialty. You might also look at some of the threads in the "Read YA Lit" group, if you haven't already -- I get a lot of good suggestions there!

To those that asked:
Yes, I have read the Twilight series...some of the best books I have ever read.
I would also recommend books by Michael Chrichton, good fast books. Adventureish for the most part.
Robin Cook is more medical thrillers, but they are very easy, fast and fun. Scary sometimes too. Not anywhere close to the point of "horror" book though.
Of course, Dan Brown is one of my personal favorites. Angels and Demons is one that's not well know, but it is VERY good.

#306 - Forget About It sounds cute. Painful to admit but I may add it to my TBR list (need more reading and less adding.....). Let me know what you think/thought of Patrick Carman. I wouldn't say I was blown away by his series but at the same time I thought it was pretty fresh and creative so I did enjoy it.

I just finished Angels by Marian Keyes. Best I can call it is mediocre chick lit. Pretty much on par with every other Marian Keyes book I read. Now I'm reading George R.R. Martin's Fevre Dream about vampires running a steamboat on the Mississippi in the late 1800's. (I'm taking a break from Martin's Dreamsongs because 300 pages of short stories was all I could take. They were good short stories mind you but I dare say my attention span was too long for another 400 pages of short stuff.)

I'm trying to only buy books used or with coupons for now. Funny you mention Patrick Carman - I bought the second book last night (sadly new and without a coupon because it was used on a more expensive book ;). I'm going to read the rest of the series and will let you know what I think of it as I read it. :)

Who decides which books get press (Harry Potter) and which get censored? After all, censorship is becoming America's favorite past-time. The US gov't (and their corporate friends), already detain protesters, ban books like "America Deceived" from Amazon and shut down Ron Paul. Free Speech forever (especially for books).

In crime shows they often call a young boy being abused a "little lord fountleroy," it always bugs me because they book has absolutely nothing to do with that, and can't the writters do a little research before using a literary reference, because they are totally miss-repreasenting the book.

    * why are we whispering*

I did read Great Expectations in H.S. but I didn't enjoy it very much. The Ethan Hawke adaptation was very strange and didn't improve my opinon

I think the easiest place to start Dickens is Hard Times or A Christmas Carol. They are both shorter and have less of the feel of being paid by the word. Hard Times is very funny I just overcame my Dickens aversion and read it last year - nothing like having a teacher named Gradgrind.

hi every1. I just finished The Lovely Bones. what a horribly wonderful book. I found myself overcome on several occasion while reading this book, and it's probably my fave book so far this year. I needed something to cleanse the old literary palette, and cheer me up again, so I turned to 13 blue envelopes I'm sooo enjoying it! 507 K: glad you liked Inkheart! The sequel is okay, but set mostly in the Book so it didn't freak me out as much. I hope they do a good job on the movie. Brenden Frasier and Paul Bettany should be great!

513 Sugey: The Lovely Bones has been sitting in my to be reread pile, but I haven't been able to pick it up. I might have to wait until summer when things are brighter and I can get through it faster. "Horribly wonderful' is a good way to describe it.

Dickens discussion: The only Dickens book I have been able to read more than once is Oliver Twist. It might not even count as a novel since he wrote it as a newspaper serial. I also had to read Great Expectations in high school (I only remember the Havisham stuff) and Hard Times in college (I don't remember anything). I tried to read The Pickwick Papers once, but I couldn't get through it. I only picked it up because it was mentioned in Little Women.

I have less than 100 pages left in Little, Big. This is one long book!

compski: You're doing better than I am. I'm only about a third of the way through Little, Big.

    516foggidawn
    Feb 11, 2008, 8:43 pm

I'm so wanting to read Little, Big, but my library doesn't have it! Yes, the library has failed me! Tragic, isn't it? And I'm trying not to buy more books right now.

Dickens -- I love Dickens! I went through a Dickens phase in high school. However, I haven't read anything of his (other than A Christmas Carol) for years. Guess I should whip out Barnaby Rudge or The Pickwick Papers (two that I never finished) and try again.

I've been reading a lot of fluff lately -- tearing through the Bloody Jack series, partly because my teen book club decided to read the first book, and partly in anticipation of getting the fifth book when it comes in -- I put a hold on it, and unlike with Eclipse, I can be patient and wait for it! I also read Chicks with Sticks: It's a Purl Thing, which was full of knitting and teenage angst. I'm also rereading A Little Princess (more LT inspiration!) and then will read Little Lord Fauntleroy.

514--> Totally read it Compski, I really did love it, tho I mourned Susie with each page.

*** I don't think these are spoilers, but what do I know?***

I think its an important book, you see humans at their best and their very worse. You wonder, how do you pick up the pieces after so much horror? How do you shoulder the burden of your choices? As I read, all I kept thinking was "These things really do happen", and I would cry some more.

I just finished Little, Big. It is a good book and very well written, but I think I missed something. I feel as confused as some of the characters.

I think it is time for some comfort rereads. The PBS "Austenpalooza" has inspired me to reread Mansfield Park and Hogwarts Express has me wanting to read A Little Princess again. I think a lot of us have (re)read it recently. Maybe we need a discussion.

I've been so disgruntled because I can't seem to find a copy of Little, Big! You guys have made me very curious about the thread for it.

    *light ups*
A Little Princess discussion would be great. We seem to have been talking about the author's books a lot lately.

Compski, I had just been thinking about reading Mansfield Park soon. I haven't read that one yet. :)

As I recall, we've also discussed possibly having a group discussion of Inkheart, though I can't remember what the result of that was. (The Read YA Lit group did a group discussion of it fairly recently.) With the third book due out in April, maybe we could discuss even simply the trilogy itself a few months further down, once everyone's had a good amount of time to read the complete series, or, if they disliked it, simply part of the first book. (People do give up on some books, I know I have.)

    547Marensr

Yes K it is fiction. From the 1930s a British writer Rachel Ferguson She and her two sisters live with their mother and have fantastic stories about famous people theyve never met but they pretend they have-confusing a string of governesses but it all changes when they meet one of their idols and have a ghostly visit from the Bronte sisters. It is funny and whimsical and lovely.

Edited to add that it is out of print. I read a library copy but loved it so much I ordered it used from a British bookseller- American ones seem to sell it for outrageous prices.
