New Year's Weekend Readathon

1LibraryLover23
Edited: Dec 31, 2016, 7:04 pm

Hi everyone, and welcome to the New Year's weekend readathon! I offered to host and get a thread started - it's going to be pretty informal, so feel free to drop in as much or as little as you'd like. The readathon starts Friday, December 30 at 9am EST and ends Monday, January 2 at 5pm EST. (But feel free to tweak the times so they fit your schedule and time zone, these are the times I'll be around.)

Leave a comment if you'd like to join and I'll add your name to the master list. And here's a basic template for anyone who wants to use it (borrowed from an earlier readathon thread!):

I've been reading: (Name of book or books you're read in the last hour)

I've been reading: Old & Rare: Thirty Years in the Book Business by Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine B. Stern - borrowed this book from the library after running across info about Stern and how she uncovered the name Louisa May Alcott used when writing her Blood and Thunder stories early on her writing career. This book makes me want to discover a rare book on almost any subject just for the thrill of discovery.

I'll get started right after lunch. For the past few days, I've been reading kindle book samples, trying to decide what to exchange for a couple of books I was given for Christmas that just aren't my cuppa. Today I will get back to Victoria: A Novel of a Young Queen by Daisy Goodwin. It's an ARC from Book Browse, and the review is long overdue. I'm about 1/3 through, but it's a fast read.

I started this book awhile ago but had to set it aside to finish some library books. I'm enjoying it, it's the story of a German boy and a French girl and their lives during World War II, the chapters alternate back and forth between their perspectives. I'm finding Werner's storyline to be the more compelling of the two, but I'm liking it overall.

What was embarrassing was my first tweet was to our Prime Minister, so he was getting trolled along with me & a couple of others. I suggested they do some reading so was being trolled for an LT list of 280 books on the Middle East, and was accused of bias.

eta: settling down with my book again.

Waiting in vain for UPS to deliver a book from Amazon as promised -- but now they told me that they lied and won't deliver it until Jan 3rd, when I won't be here. ARGH. So I did do some reading, just to keep myself sane. At least I can now go get something to eat and go to bed.

I don't track reading time or posting time; sorry. Assume that I'm reading when not sleeping, eating, etc. And while I'll have to set up my new thread at some point, I won't be posting that much.

I've got a bunch of mindless mysteries that I'll probably turn to next. I've just read about 38 pages of Rise the Dark, by Michael Koryta, an ARC that I got earlier this year because it's the sequel of a book I read previously that was quite good. I've got the new John Grisham book on my Kindle, and even a deep discount copy of a James Patterson book, if my head gets bad. On my audiobook, I'm listening to The Sherlockian by Graham Moore.

For "serious stuff", when I feel up to it, I'll starting reading Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. I've also got The Sellout by Paul Beatty, but that may wait. I have two short memoirs that I might look at, one for a book group meeting next week, A Tour of Bones by Denise Inge, and the other Bleaker House, by Nell Stevens, an ARC of a yet-to-be published book.

No idea what will get read and what won't. Depends on my head and my energy level. I don't have much else on my plate, having finished work and (most) grocery shopping today.

>44 Cariola: I think it depends more on how the book is formatted than the device whether or not you can see page numbers, or at least it does for me on my ancient kindle. In this case, I just googled for the book and did the math for the percentage read out of the total number of pages I turned up.

I left out some reading I did yesterday because part of it was half an hour's worth of listening to an audio book (Wave) and I had seriously no idea of an easy way to put that into pages, so I didn't bother.

Re page numbers on Kindle - some books have page numbers, some don't - I wish my purchases from Amazon all had page numbers. Netgalley books don't, as they are document files rather than published ebooks, and sometimes have very erratic formatting too. I also have some ebooks bought from a publisher that can be read on any device, ie they are not published as books in the Kindle format but as documents.

You could guess how many pages you might have read from percentage read multiplied by page number shown on Amazon (which are usually not quite right but it's an estimate). Or if you've just read a few "pages" or turns usually one page of a book is about 2 "pages" on a Kindle at the font size I read at (normally the 4th option but some books need a slightly different size to be read comfortably). Or just put percentage read!

9 am EST would be 2 pm in London - we are on GMT in winter.

I was out from late morning until after 8 pm so didn't start reading probably until well after that. Have had a bit more reading time today, but still distractions.

Jo Walton, Half a Crown
Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale
Jonathan Coe, Number 11

I checked this out of the library to get an overview of the state history I have of course missed by not being from around here. I didn't figure it would make that much difference that it was written in the 60s since what I'm most interested in is the earlier stuff anyway. However, I just keep saying "yikes" about the descriptions of the native people. "The Indians were savages, but they did have some inventions that the white man found useful" is only one example. That and reading about those aggressive, war-crazy Iroquois has made me put it down. *sigh*

I finished Harry Potter and The Cursed Child. I'm glad I persisted. The second half really picked up. 3.8 stars

I spent about thirty minutes listening to The Tiger's Wife as I was driving to get groceries. I have a print copy, too, and it looks like I have about 120 pages left.

And I took a sneak peak of about twenty pages in Evicted which I didn't plan to start until tomorrow.

I'm settling in to read.

>86 carlym: I liked it. It's a bit gushy, like a juvenile biography about some sports- or pop music star, but that's the intent, so complaining about it is just missing the point. (There's even an appendix about how to be like RBG.) I was already convinced of Ginsburg's awesomeness, so I didn't mind. If you're looking for nuance you'll be disappointed. For what it's trying to do it's quite good.
