EAM Back for More ROOTs

I'm back again. Or I will be in 3 hours. Going to make my goal a little easier to attain this year (36) and I'll feel like I accomplished the world if I go over. :D

Happy New Year to all and I wish successful ROOTing and nothing but 5 star reads in 2018.

>16 Tess_W: Thanks! I really think taking a little of the pressure off has helped put me back on track.

So I completed 5 ROOTs this month. *backflip*

Great work, EAM - I'm intrigued by the title Killed by Clutter which is what I will be if I don't put the books down for a while and tackle some housework ;)

19Jackie_K
Feb 1, 2018, 7:14 am

Most of my clutter is (sort of) confined to The Room Of Doom (I'm sure I'm not the only one who's got one of those!), but it is also spilling out! I've decided, as I find it really hard to follow formal programmes for decluttering, that I'm just going to work at decluttering *something* each week this year, and see how that goes. So far I've cleared a bag of stuff from my wardrobe, 3 bags of clothes and lots of equipment she's outgrown from my daughter's room, and sorted out some duplicate books which will go to Barter Books when we next go there. Hopefully I'll keep it up beyond January!

20floremolla
Feb 1, 2018, 7:57 am

>19 Jackie_K: that sounds like a sensible approach. I declutter from one room to another, till eventually it ends up in the garage. Then my in-laws come for their twice-yearly stay and I'm shamed into donating or dumping :/

21enemyanniemae
Feb 1, 2018, 10:53 am

>19 Jackie_K: >20 floremolla: I have a house worthy of the TV show Hoarders. Working at a bookstore for 21 years means that I have thousands of books and they are stacked everywhere. Bookcases, shelves, tables, floor, everywhere. I also worked 15 hour days 7 days a week for all of that time (had a real M-F job AND another part time job on top of the part time bookstore job) so I used my house for sleeping, showering and storage. Mail and other papers just piled up, fell over and grew more. Laundry piled up on the floor in my bedroom until I washed them and then they sat in piles on my bed or on a chair until I used them. I couldn't get to my closet to put anything away if I wanted to. The mess has been so overwhelming that I have turned in circles, not knowing where or how to start getting rid of a lot of it and putting the rest in order. I can clear a little clutter and it reappears within days. I have so many books on decluttering that they are clutter in themselves. But I started reading a book called Unf*ck Your Habitat by Rachel Hoffman and it has really helped. I still have a long way to go but I can see empty floor space in rooms I have not seen in years. I'm optimistic and for once, I really WANT to tackle a little more of it before I go to work or go to bed. Being able to see the changes and knowing that I have the means and ability to prevent it from reoccurring is a great feeling!

I read somewhere that we seem to spend the first half of our lives acquiring stuff and the rest trying to get rid of it - good work on seeing progress!

>22 floremolla: BOY is that true!! I have no idea where I got this packrat mentality from, it definitely wasn't either of my parents.

>23 rabbitprincess: Thanks! It's nice to have people in your corner. I should have taken before pictures so I can really show off the after... but I would DIE if anyone ever saw what this place looked like. Seriously.

>27 MissWatson: trying to make up for last year's meager total? *grin* Well, that and the facts that I can read (discreetly) at the library when there is no work to be done, that I have a glorious hour for lunch instead of 30 minutes to wolf it down, take and antacid and run back to work, and that I love my job so much that I am not super stressed out when I get home so I can read for a bit before bed and it's not just words swimming on a page.

You are doing a great job yourself! I love your cookbook experiment.
