Johnny Depp in Sleepy Hollow

Gary Olman as one of those blood sucking fiends.
9littlegeek
ack! I can't see Johnny!
10clamairy
I don't think she posted a picture, just a link.
Edit: Ack, that's just a touchstone. LOL

I'll cover my eyes until someone lets me know that the Johnny part of the thread is done. ;)
13philosojerk
And if we're talking about Gary Oldman in Dracula, we can also talk about him in The Scarlet Letter as well as in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (based on Shakespeare's Hamlet).
14littlegeek
clam, Alan Rickman is blonde.
15littlegeek
I just couldn't wait any more.

16littlegeek
Sir Larry as Heathcliff.

Did you know that Heath Ledger was named after Heathcliff? *snif*

Thanks for the Johnny pic, littlegeek. It was working when I posted it. I swear it was. I will go looking for another.
20littlegeek
OK, the movie sucked, but it does supply a blonde for clam.

21maggie1944
Love #16 - pictures out of my misspent youth.....

Really, Paris should not be prettier than Helen.

#24 I'm just glad i'm not the only dirty old broad at the GD.
31littlegeek
Well then, we mustn't forget the "blonde."

#28 I dunno, 47 seems pretty old to me lately. I notice you don't say I'm not dirty! (tee hee)
btw, I have a friend who has perfected the above expression. We call it her "Leggy face" and it gets a lot of requests at parties.

A few days ago I told my husband about the new Pee-Wee Herman movie that Paul Rubens is writing. I asked him if he could guess who Paul wanted to play the part of Pee-Wee. His immediate, and correct, response was: Johnny Depp.
35RowanTribe
re: 34
Oh no... please no. Pee-Wee scares the crap out of me. I'd be horribly scarred for life if dear lovely Johnny was connected in my mind to that.
*tries frantically to wipe image out of mind*

Will he get Laurence Fishburne to reprise his role as Cowboy Curtis?

Nobody is as old as me! I love these pictures all up and down.
39littlegeek
Crap! someone is protecting their bandwidth again. oh well, I guess they're entitled....
42DaynaRT
>35 RowanTribe:
I think the only person other than Paul who could possibly play that part is Johnny Depp.

And S. Epatha Merkerson from Law & Order needs to come back for the part of Reba the Mail Lady! No Phil Hartman though. :(

#30 Thank you MrsLee and as I have no idea how to post a picture here, if someone is bored and would like to post a picture of Eomer and/or Faramir, I would be one happy, grateful girl!
50KimberlyL
Bless you Clam! Such lovely sights for these tired eyes. Though the Faramir link doesn't seem to be working, but I'm not complaining since you added the bonus shot of Boromir.
51littlegeek
As Liv Tyler said in the bonus features, "so many pretty boys!"
53littlegeek
I was looking for a pic of Denzel in the blue leather pants in Much Ado, but we'll have to settle (!) for Laurence Fishburne in Othello. (With Kenneth Branagh as Iago.)
54KimberlyL
Thank you littlegeek! Both for the lovely picture of Faramir and for the Othello/Iago (two for the price of one!)
57littlegeek
I consider these books classics, and they did a pretty good job of evoking the spirit of the series, AND I love Russell Crowe, but couldnt' they get someone taller and blonder?
Oh well...
Oh well...
58jburlinson
Books don't get much more classic than The Bible.

Michael Parks before Quentin Tarantino got ahold of him.

Paul Newman as Hank Stamper (Sometimes a Great Notion, my new favorite book). Paul Newman's not my type, but he was kind of a hunk.
60frithuswith
Timothy Dalton as Mr Rochester (not that I've ever seen the adaptation, I just think he's nice to look at :-) )
61frithuswith
Oooh, and to add to the Master and Commander one:

Mmmm, Crowe and Paul Bettany :-)

Mmmm, Crowe and Paul Bettany :-)
62clamairy
Oh, LizT. That's one mighty fine picture of Mr. Rochester.
I have seen that adaptation, and it was quite good. Interestingly, I am listening to Jane Eyre on my iPod lately. I'm enjoying tremendously!
:o)
I think Charlotte kicked Emily's butt in the writing department. ;o)

*faints*
Vincent Pérez as Christian de Neuvillette in Cyrano de Bergerac (based on a play based on a real person's life, but nonetheless...)
Edited to fix touchstone.
66GeorgiaDawn
My favorite Mr. Darcy!
68GeorgiaDawn
How about Charlton Heston in Ben Hur? I just watched this!
69littlegeek
#61 See what I mean?!!! Stephen should NOT tower over Jack.
But they're both cool, so I forgave them.

I know this thread kind of died, and everyone is going to think this is weird, but the cutest leading man I can think of is Evan Adams, who some of you may remember as Thomas-Builds-the-Fire, the "Indian nerd" from Smoke Signals. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, but I love his big grin and I have a thing for guys with braids.

Edit: I forgot to mention, Smoke Signals was based on a story from the classic of Native American literature Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie. Besides being an incredible read, it wins the prize for "Best Book Title Ever."

73maggie1944
And Smoke Signals is a movie very well worth seeing. I agree this guy is a cutie pie.
81littlegeek
A modern Atticus?
83KimberlyL
There is certainly the possibility. As a matter of fact, I'm placing my hope there. Whoops, sorry, that ventured close to politics.
85KimberlyL
That's easy enough, as I do have a shallow streak when it comes to men. ;-)
Edited to fix Street?!?!?!
Edited to fix Street?!?!?!
86littlegeek
Apparently, that was from GQ, a definite pretty boy rag.
87oh2read
#76 Are you reading my mind or what? I just finished reading TKaM, and there is absolutely no one finer than Gregory Peck, or the character Atticus Finch, for that matter.
88oh2read
#77- I don't have a clue where the Atticus Finches of our real-life times are, but another great character along that line is Jake Brigance. He takes the case of the black man who shoots two white men in modern-day Clanton, MS, in A Time to Kill by John Grisham.
Played in the movie by Matthew McCaunaghey *pant, pant*. Probably his best role ever, in my lowly opinion. Also John Grisham's best work.

89clamairy
#88 - And his first book, too, wasn't it? Also my favorite of his.
Yes, Mathew! *slobber* I posted a very nice picture of him in another thread. He reminds me of a young Paul Newman sometimes.

91oh2read
OMG! I could just DEVOUR that whole, with chocolate please! Sometimes I don't understand why he has done all the lightweight roles that he has, when he was SOOO good in this one, and could really be a serious actor.
Still, he is a good ole Texas boy.... can't ask for much more than a good ole Southern boy.

92drsol
I know this isn't a popular stance to have, but I agree with GeorgiaDawn upthread (#66). The new Darcy is hot! My husband has had to deal with me drooling over him for the past few months since I saw the movie. I even ordered his british tv series (MI-5) just so I could see more of him. My stalker-ish tendencies are showing...
Here he is again:

93littlebookworm
I love this thread. I like to look at both Mr. Darcys, although Colin Firth always wins.
Missing my favorite though, who I've probably posted elsewhere:

ETA: And then I found these ..., which are kind of creepy and awesome at the same time.

#92 drsol - Thanks for the pic! *sigh*
97KimberlyL
#92 drsol I hope you enjoy the MI-5 series. I love them and you'll get very nice Matthew McFadyen fixes in!
98maggie1944
I used to have a life sized Michael Jordan in my classroom. That was lovely.
99clamairy
Yes, he is one very beautiful man, maggie. The only movie I've ever seen him in was Space Jam, though. It was hardly based on a classic. Might be worth a pic.
101maggie1944
let's see ... thread is on 'leading men from films based on classic books' ....
I must have missed this one. And I sure am sorry cuz he's got the best smile going! What movie? what movie? I wanna rent it.
No, seriously, he is totally beautiful.

He did make a series of classic underwear ads, does that count?

I think that Gerard Butler is a worthy addition to this fetching repertoire.

#95 & 96 Matthew is also in a film that came out last year - Death at a Funeral. It's very funny, definitely worth checking out.

My! what a big sword.

I always tell my less than enlightened 300 fan buddies that before Gerard was King Leonidas, he was in The Phantom of the Opera movie musical.
Usually I get the response: "NoOOOOOO! You've got to be s***ing me!"

111Choreocrat
Real men wear kilts. Really manly men wear kilts with a pink shirt. Of course, if you're weilding a sword like that, *no one* is going to question your manliness.
112Jakeofalltrades
I'm not questioning GB's masculinity, I just like confusing adolescent males my age who are insecure in theirs by toppling their expectations of their screen heroes.
Aren't I evil?

113Choreocrat
No, not particularly. But it is fun to gloat smugly over others' ignorance. (#111 was a general comment rather than a pointed one at your post)
I was actually more shocked to find out that The Phantom was Leonidas. I had it the other way 'round.

#118 - really bad. I just tried watching it a couple of months ago, anything with Gerard Butler couldn't be too bad right? Wrong!!!!!
128Caramellunacy
I could be wrong, but it looks like Clive Owen in King Arthur to me. Terrible movie, plot-wise, but there sure were a lot of pretty people in it...
129littlegeek
Gerard is nice, but Clive Owen wins.
130DaynaRT
Yeah, it's Clive in King Arthur.
I loved the movie. But I'm an Arthuriana buff, not a movie lover.

133MrsLee
I liked Clive in King Arthur too, thought it was imaginative, but I'm not picky about history or films. :)
I think I'll have to watch the Beowulf & Grendel film though. I don't care how bad that movie is...#114. Sigh. Besides, the Rotten Tomatoes were only 50% negative, I can handle that!

As long as you all understand the Johnny is mine.
139weener
Who do I have to pound to keep the Native American nerd from Smoke Signals all to myself? Grrrr!
141dreamlikecheese
I couldn't see a thread of this sort and not contribute something. So I give you two cheeky monkey English men (my favourite sort).

David Tennant as Casanova.

John Simm in The Knight's Tale from the BBC's modern version of the Canterbury Tales.

*giggles*
*giggles*
143MrsLee
#142 - I love that idea! Much better than Pokemon or DragonballZ. Or baseball/sports, however, I know some of the gals here would throw in some of the sports cards too. :)
145tapestry100
Curse my lack of knowledge on how to post a pic in here, but James McAvoy from either Becoming Jane or Atonement. Neither classics in the classic sense, but all the same...
Scrumptious!

Here you go David. =)

and jsut because he's so darn cute here is one from Penelope as well.

Also lets not forget about Dougray Scott who played Prince Henry in Ever After based on the classic fairy tale of Cinderella.
148tapestry100
Thanks, Gail! :)
150tapestry100
That is one of my favorite movies!
151Jakeofalltrades
Stephen Fry is mine, though. Since he's gay and has no interest in me in that way, and I'm straight and don't want to do HIM, it's the perfect arrangement...
153Jakeofalltrades
Hugh Laurie looks so adorable in that picture.
155AlannaSmithee
This is completely disregarding the "Classic Books" theme, but this is Roy Dupuis, French Canadian actor who has played a few real life characters in his time. You may perhaps forgive the theme disregardation (;-)) just because he too, like so many of the others here, is purdy. :D
156AlannaSmithee
Ans speaking of Gerard Butler, he first appeared on our screens here in the US in Attila

158littlegeek
#154 clam, he's supposed to look like a dweeb....he's playing Bertie Wooster!
I love Hugh....sigh...
And thanks to Irish for the Much Ado pics in 149....best costume design EVER!

I vote for Edward Norton in The Painted Veil, or Daniel Day-Lewis in The Crucible.

Ooh Ooh Ooh. Just thought of another (I can't believe I forgot this one!)
How about Ioan Gruffudd in The Forsyte Saga

(I couldn't find a decent sized one from the show so this will have to do.
Also, Ioan as Horatio Hornblower.

Gotta love a man in uniform...

164dreamlikecheese
Yes he was. Why oh why did he agree to do those films? Oh well, I suppose we all have to pay the bills somehow. He was also in some other shockers like 102 Dalmatians.
