💙💚💛💜💗🧡❤️🖤
My little June baby turns ONE at the end of the month and my biggest baby just turned FOUR!!
💙💚💛💜💗🧡❤️🖤
Welcome to my June thread! I have a few goals for this month but overall I won't be forcing myself to read anything that I don't feel like. This seems to be working best for me and I'm over halfway to my goal of 100 books already!
I am Chelle, 36yo wife, mother of two and a police dispatcher. Hubby is an officer and between our two shift work schedules we share in all duties of house and children. I read at work when it is slow and after our daughters are in bed, which doesn't amount to much reading anymore. We had our second child in 2017 so life is hectic right now but I'm still trying to find time to read.
I used to read about 100-125 books a year but in 2016 I only hit 36 and 2017 I just squeaked in with 75!
Hoping to hit 100 this year.
My other threads (that have gone to sleep out of neglect) are:
Women's Prize for Fiction
1001 books list
Booker Prize

Happy new thread, Chelle! Congratulations on the birthday to come and one just past. They are such adorable little girls!! (impressive book lists too).

Happy new thread! And Happy Birthday to your girls too!
I've just finished watching "The Great American Read" and it's inspired me to get to a whole stack of books up for the title. But my vote for #1 goes to The Great Gatsby.

Happy new thread Chelle my dear, great photos of the girls dear friend.

Thanks everyone for the new thread wishes! This morning Chloe has soccer and then temps are finally cooler! Should be only 16 while we are at soccer, which will be lovely! Possibly rain for the rest of the weekend, which will make Chloe sad, but means I can stay out of the sun for a couple days as I think we are all getting too much sun!

60) Two Kinds of Truth by Michael Connelly
Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch novels have been a favourite of mine since I discovered them many, many years ago. This was another solid entry in the series and it was a pleasure to read. I love that Bosch hasn't changed much after all these years and Connelly's writing is still as enjoyable now as when I first read them.

Happy Saturday, Chelle. Happy New Thread! LOVE the topper and your lovely daughters. Happy Birthday to dear Chloe. It has been wonderful following her grow up.

61) Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett
This was, by far, the best Discworld yet. I just loved Esk and Granny. It’s been a while since I highlighted so many quotes in a book that made me giggle!

>20 msf59: Morning, Mark! Reading is going quite well! I've been finding time during the day and after the girls go to bed and I've been listening to audios while I work around the house (with one headphone in and one listening to the littles!) It's been working well and my house is semi tidy right now :)
>21 kidzdoc: Thanks, Darryl! I feel that they are growing way too soon and Chloe is starting school in September. I know I'm going to be sad to have less time with her but she needs the child interactions and this means I'll get some one on one with Elissa, which will be nice
>22 ronincats: Thanks, Roni! Ellie still has the round, chubby baby face. I'll be interested to see if they look alike still once she grows into a little girl.
>23 EBT1002: Ha, thanks Ellen. Yes, chasing the littles has become a full time job lately as Elissa is crawling and starting to try and walk. She is fast and ALWAYS into something!
>24 AMQS: Thanks, Anne! I agree, but I am biased :)

62) Bloodsucking Fiends🎧
I have enjoyed a few of Moore's books so far but I didn't find this one quite as funny or entertaining as some of the others. I will continue with the series, but I won't be rushing to grab the second.

63) Three Secrets by Clare Boyd
Netgalley
I almost put this one down in the first chapter as it felt like it was going to be a bit cheesy. Since I had just finished a book I really enjoyed I put it down and tried again the next day. I am so very glad that I did go back to it as I ended up reading this in only two days. It sucked me in after only a few chapters and kept my interest until the very end! Recommended to anyone who enjoys a great psychological thriller and doesn't mind ignoring real life responsibilities, as you won't want to put it down!
(Thanks to Netgalley for this ebook in exchange for an honest review.)

64) Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
2018 PopSugar Reading Challenge 33. A childhood classic you've never read
Great American Read
When I picked this up as an ebook I was not aware of how short it is, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in strength of story. I found myself cheering for Brian and hoping his luck would change. I’m not sure if I crashed in the wilderness whether I’d even last a week. This is a quick read but a good one. It doesn’t get my vote for Great American Read but you should read it anyway!
33thornton37814
>32 ChelleBearss: That's one of the "required reads" from the YA course I took in library school. (We won't say how many years ago that was.) I probably would not have selected it as one of the options otherwise, but it was a memorable book which stuck with me over the years.
34BLBera
Happy new thread, Chelle. What beautiful babies!
Some good reading as well. I have the Caine book on my e-reader. Glad it's a good one.

Happy Tuesday, Chelle. Hope your week is off to a good start. It looks like your books are treating you fine. I like Paulsen, but I can't believe I have not read Hatchet. Bad Mark...
37ChelleBearss
>33 thornton37814: I agree that it's probably not going to win GAR but I like that it made the list as otherwise I don't think I would have read it. It wasn't required reading for us in school, and honestly the ones that were required reading haven't really stuck with me much.
>34 BLBera: Thanks, Beth! I've heard great things about all of Caine's books which is funny because I didn't know she existed until this year! I picked up her Stillhouse Lake series as well and hope to read them over the summer
>35 EBT1002: Hiya, Ellen! It's so hard to keep up, even with the threads being a bit slower. I admit to being terribly behind as my morning coffee has not been LT time lately but instead it has been chasing the baby time! I'll be happy once the exploring stage is over, but it is fun to watch her discover, and get into, new things.

Chloe and I have started reading chapter books, instead of board books, lately. While she still likes her board books she has been asking to read books "like mommy" so I got out my ancient copy of Wind and the Willows from when I was young. She enjoyed the beginning of it but then I could tell she got a little board with the story as it's a touch dated.

We then moved onto Disney's Alice in Wonderland, also from my childhood, and she loved it! Our library is having a Mad Hatter toddler tea party next week and my MIL is taking her so we read that at the perfect time.

We started Winnie the Pooh last night but she didn't take to it yet. We also have James and the Giant Peach out from the library to try and I just bought her a copy of Catwings and it looks like it has chapters and pictures so hopefully she likes that one! I have a few others on holds at the library to try in the coming weeks The Adventures of Captain Underpants, Mercy Watson to the Rescue and Who gives a hoot? : Calpurnia Tate, girl vet
As for myself I have managed to start two Stephen King books at the same time! On audio The Stand: Uncut and in print The Outsider. Both are excellent. I've read The Stand in print before, a few times, but this is the first time in audio.

Hi, Chelle. So, did you vote? I am dreading tonight. I can't bear to think about it, even. My stomach feels sick

Love your book update, Chelle, especially what you're reading with Chloe! I love introducing my nieces and nephews to favorite books from my childhood. And I try not to take it personally if they don't like them :)

>40 katiekrug: Thanks, Katie! I was disappointed, and so was Nate, that Chloe didn't take to Winnie the Pooh but it's an older copy with zero pictures. I think I'll try a copy with some illustrations for her as it really is a great story!

Nice to hear that Chloe is expressing interest in chapter books. I've read The Stand Twice - the first was the 'cut' edition and the second the uncut edition. Have fun listening to it!

Happy Friday, folks. It's supposed to be a beautiful day today so I'm hoping for some outside play time today. I got a whopping 4 hours of sleep last night so perhaps a nap is in order too!
Sunday is a joint family birthday for both girls. Chloe just turned 4 on May 30th and Elissa turns 1 on June 29th so we decided to have a little party for the extended family. Today I have to start working on the cakes. We decided on a Moana theme so I have a two tier Moana ocean cake to make today and tomorrow. I picked a fairly simple design that although it looks fancy, is actually more assembling than decorating with icing. Crossing my fingers that it doesn't turn out more complicated than I think!
If all goes well mine should look a little something like this. I also have a tiny ocean smash cake to make just for Elissa.

Last night was the election here in Ontario and the PC party took a majority with the NDP forming their opposition. Neither party really seemed like a good idea, however the party that was removed, Liberal, did such a terrible job that they not only did not get voted back in but they lost the majority of their ridings and lost so many votes that they lost their party status. If that's not the voters speaking then I don't know what is!
>46 katiekrug: She was less sweet when she decided to wake up at 6am. Ugh.
>47 norabelle414: Glad to hear you liked Catwings, Nora! I have not read anything by Le Guin before but I recognized her name when I saw it and the amazon link looked pretty good! Should be here tomorrow.
>48 RebaRelishesReading: I hope so, Reba! I have to find her a little party dress to wear to it. Gramma and Papa are taking a month long vacation after the party so it will be nice to have Chloe and Gramma time before she leaves.
>49 Copperskye: Yay for Echo Park! I love Harry Bosch and got my dad and FIL reading the series as well.
Your comment about King made me laugh! I can't imagine what a King children's book would be like! I know Neil Gaiman writes awesome kids books but I don't see anything King could write being child appropriate! lol
>50 karenmarie: Hi, Karen! The uncut audio is a whopper at 48 hours! Oy! I think I've knocked off about 10 hours so I'll be listening for quite a while yet!

From what I understand Ford's father was in politics as well so this is second generation. Hopefully there won't be a third. Or perhaps he could turn out to be amazing .... really our bar is not set that high right now as "anyone but Wynne" seemed to be a voting option.

I'm officially tired now!! At 915 this morning I wandered over to the neighbour's garage sale and on my way home my other neighbour yelled at me "you're late!". I had no idea what he talking about until he saw my blank look and yelled "soccer?!" ... So ya, I forgot about Chloe's soccer game. We had 8 minutes to get dressed and run out of the house. Thankfully the field is only two minutes away so we made it right on time! Phew!

I enjoyed this one just as much as the first in the series. All my favourite characters made an appearance and there was lots of action. I had a couple issues with the plot line but nothing that I'd make a big fuss over. Recommended if you've read the first book and I'm looking forward to the next one! 4🌟

>54 ChelleBearss: - Chelle, I was not living in Ontario when ford's father was around but from all I've heard, the apples haven't fallen far from the tree. He was a bully and a boor. What a surprise. The current generation learned from their *role model*. And as for Drug Ford being *amazing*, well, don't hold your breath. There are not enough points on the collective family ford IQ scale to even approach *good*, forget about amazing . The best one can hope for is that he has decent advisors, and that, unlike his role model, trump, he actually listens to them.
I have not felt this depressed in ages. I actually feel like crying. I just think it is so wrong that someone like him is even allowed to run, let alone run a province.
>57 ChelleBearss: - Those are amazing!! have you ever seen the site CakeWrecks.com? Most of those are funny but sometimes, they are awesome. Yours could be in that latter group! They look too pretty to cut!

66) The Outsider by Stephen King
2018 PopSugar Reading Challenge 43. A book that was being read by a stranger in a public place (Starbucks on Instagram)
5🌟
I had 50 pages left at 1030pm and was in the zone when two stray cats started fighting and screaming outside. I may have just had a heart attack. This was great and at only 560 pages it was actually small for a King novel. Recommended to anyone who likes to be scared and has already read King’s Bill Hodges Trilogy (due to spoilers)

Fox and Raccoon by Leslie-Anne Green
Received this ARC today from LT Early Reviewers. This is a sweet book about best friends that live next door to each other in Juniper Hollow. They do everything together, until today because Fox is too busy so Raccoon decides to help out. I loved that all the illustrations are done using textiles like wool, thread, and fabric (and love, says the book jacket :) This is the first children’s book by Toronto 🇨🇦 based Green and I’ll keep an eye out for more in this proposed series. *on sale June 19*

Sloth at the Zoom by Becker & Orbie
This is a great little book about a sloth trying to make friends at the too fast Zoom. The drawings are great and I love how the speech bubbles are separate to show that you should be reading the words of the sloth slower. This is a great book to teach children to slow down and enjoy life and making new friends. Recommended. 4🌟

Great reading here, Chelle, and AMAZING cakes!! You are so talented! Do the girls think it's as magical as I do, or are they accustomed to the cake wizardry?

I starred your thread, Chelle. I have to see what you're up to along with my other friends here on LT. Just chatting with you on Litsy is not enough. I love reading your remarks about kids' books because I have a five-month-old granddaughter and a five-year-old grandson PLUS I get so many kids' books as donations to my Little Free Library. Aren't kids' books fun?!

Hi Chelle. Stopping by for a quick visit. What a lovely idea to have a joint birthday party that the extended party can attend. Love the cakes you made... they are stunning!
Wishing you and your family a wonderful weekend.

68) Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
1001 Books to read before you die
Great American Read
When I first heard of this novel I didn't think I would ever pick it up as I had it in my head that it was going to be one of those stuffy classics that I wouldn't be able to get into. I was wrong. This caught my interest from the opening line and kept my attention until the very end. Excellent and recommended. 4🌟

Glad you enjoyed Rebecca, it truly earns its reputation.
Du Maurier's short stories can be downright creepy, especially when you consider the era she was writing.

69) The Stand by Stephen King 🎧
Great American Read
This has been one of my favourite books since I first read it in high school. After many re-reads I decided to try it for the first time on audio. I am happy to report that it is just an enjoyable on audio as it is in print! It was quite a commitment at 47 hours and 52 minutes but it was worth it! Highly recommended 5🌟

>85 RebaRelishesReading: Hi Reba. Rebecca was my first Du Maurier. I may have to try and find a few others at some point
>86 mstrust: Hi Jennifer. I'm not a big fan of short stories but I may try to find a couple of her other novels.
>87 ronincats: Thanks Roni! Chloe does play soccer willingly each week. Because it's toddler soccer it's usually games and obstacles still and not a lot of actual playing. She likes it fine but I'm not sure this will stick as she gets older. She seems to like tball more.
>88 msf59: Hi Mark! I've managed to squeeze a bit of reading in most days, either print or at least some audio while cleaning/cooking etc. Hope you have had some cooler weather for your route!

71) Foe by Iain Reid
I requested this one from NetGalley as the description sounded quite freaky. While the writing did not quite live up to what I'd hoped for and was a bit chunky, the story did keep my interest until the end and I managed to read it in about a day. It's a very slow build up and gets creepy very slowly, but it was a decent read. I would recommend it to anyone who likes sci-fi and doesn't mind a slow burn. 3.5🌟

73) The Minimalist Home by Joshua Becker
I've been slowly trying to organize our home, and when I say slowly I mean sloooooooowly! We've lived in our current home for over three years and still had unopened boxes in basement storage from our move. I requested this book from NetGalley in the hopes that it would motivate me to finally do something about all this stuff. While some of the book and the minimalist movement is not for me (I need to live with more than two towels and one plate and fork per person), some of it was incredibly helpful and motivating. I asked my in-laws to watch my children for one day and was able to tackle that basement storage room and open every box and the majority of the contents immediately went into the garage sale pile. I've managed to make it through the children's toys and bedrooms and have removed so much stuff! I still need to tackle the kitchen, and master bedroom and closet this week but I know I will be as ruthless as I was with the rest of the house. I'm planning an epic garage sale for this summer!

74) Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard 🎧
4🌟
2018 PopSugar Reading Challenge 35. A past Goodreads Choice Awards winner (debut Goodreads author 2015)
I picked this one up because of all the hype I've been seeing about it and while I didn't love it as much as others have, I did enjoy it enough to want to continue with the series. Some of the plot is predictable but I was happy to see that I didn't catch all the twists and one surprised me near the end. 4🌟

75) Liar, Liar by Lisa Jackson
4🌟
This is the first novel that I've read by Lisa Jackson and I doubt it will be the last as this was great! It was fast paced and full of drama from the opening pages through to the end. I really felt for the main character and found myself hoping she would find the answers that she desperately needed. I was surprised at how many characters were involved in either the mystery itself or the unraveling of it. Recommended to anyone who likes a good mystery.

Hi Chelle my dear, glad you enjoyed Red Queen enough to give it four stars, I have it on the shelf and thought it would be a good series so I look forward to getting around to it, don't think it fits my criteria for this year though.
Hope you, Nate, Chloe and Elissa are all well my dear, I have been missing around the threads as something always seems to get in the way to cut my time on here down. I hope to get back to some kind of normalcy on my posting in the next few days and hope that from July onwards I will get my posting numbers back up. Sending love and hugs to you all from both of us dear friend.

76) Soulless by Gail Carriger
I have always been a big fan of a fun urban fantasy novel and have been looking for a new vampire and werewolf series since I ran out of Kelly Armstrong's Otherworld books. I think I have found it in Gail Carriger and her sassy Miss Tarabotti! This was very enjoyable and I found myself really loving the characters and was sad when it ended. While it had a bit more romance than I normally enjoy, it wasn't over the top. 4.5🌟

3.5🌟
I picked this one up after seeing a few reviews on Litsy and really ended up enjoying listening to it. I could hear myself in the main character, Francis, and some of the things she says about kids and parenting made me laugh out loud. I don't normally like the whole desperate housewives type drama but this tells more along the lines of normal people drama and things that be happening behind closed doors in any neighbourhood.
