Ok it suddenly came to me, I didn't think it through, so before I talk myself out of it, I want to experiment with a new game. Of course, it could all just be one big suge-style flop, but I guess, since we are among friends (and lurkers) why not?

Ok. The game is "I spy... a book". you have to describe the cover and people have to guess what book it is??

for example:

"blue cover, woman dancing on a fountain with a pink umbrella."

is:

so what do you guys think?

(note: sorry if another group has a similar game, I barely have time to keep up with this group let alone others. I sincerely have NO IDEA what's going on, in the rest of lt.)

Feb 11, 2008, 9:54 pm

OOOHH!!! I like it suge!!! Let's play! Let's play!!!

But I don't have time to be clever and start it right now....

3MrsGrinch
Feb 11, 2008, 9:57 pm

Ok easy one

Black cover, someone holding an apple. (you only see the persons arms and hands)

4catbastet
Feb 11, 2008, 10:49 pm

7MrAndrew
Feb 11, 2008, 11:49 pm

Does that mean CBley has to guess next? Well, i'm sure that the little poppet is asleep by now, so i'll sneak one in (hoping that this cover was common to the USA editions):

thatched hut on top, stylistic crocodile below, with a clock inside the croc.

It's in my catalogue, feel free to cheat.

>#1 suge: "since we are among friends (and lurkers)". yuk yuk yuk.

#1 suge:
That sounds like a wonderful idea for a game! :)

9elbakerone
Feb 12, 2008, 9:27 am

#7 - Since you gave permission, I did cheat. ;)
The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency

(I actually had a guess on something entirely different that would have appeared on the same page and just happened to see the correct one.)

New one (US paperback cause I know it has several different covers):

A dark cover with white/cream lettering, a close up of a curved line of stacked dominoes with a finger poised to start the reaction of knocking them down.

10foggidawn
Feb 12, 2008, 9:52 am

#9 -- That's The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

I'm going to do another easy one:

An old man and a young man stand, looking into what appears to be a glowing bowl on a pedestal.

12philosojerk
Feb 12, 2008, 10:30 am

Neat idea for a game :D

OK, this one has a blue background, with a woman on the cover who has a white wrap around her waist, but is nude from the waist up. She has her arms crossed across her chest, her eyes are closed, and she has a tattoo on her back which you can only see part of because you're viewing her from the side.

Hmm... I'm either not very good at giving descriptions, or I included way too much there...

14Kerian

I spy a book with a book, doorknob, and key on it. The background is blue and white.

15foggidawn

Would that be The Eyre Affair?

And dingdingding for Philosojerk, #11.

16foggidawn
Feb 12, 2008, 10:58 am

New one: This cover features two hands cupping an amulet set with a glowing blue stone.

The Secret of the Old Clock :)

New one (more obscure book but it's in my catalog):

Stark white cover with a silhouette type picture of two large black birds perched on a tree branch - author's name at top in red letters, title below in black.

(And a little tip for helping at this game is to look at the posting person's library in "Cover View" with 50 covers per page, it's really easy to scan through and find the right book!)

Hey mandy, not to play the mom or anything but it would probably be a good idea to try to get permission from a parent, guardian or older sibling. Tim and co. have created a pretty great site here and there are some good reasons behind the rules they've put in place. Definitely don't lie about your age, but try to see about getting the right permissions - I can't see parents objecting to this site but I don't think it's the best idea to be on it without their approval either.

Don't want to sound harsh - we're always up for new friends around here! - I'm just wanting to look out for you and other young folks out there!

The cover of this book is gold in color, and looks like a door, or the lid of a trunk, with hinges to the left and a lock to the right. The title is in large white letters, a little above center, with the author's name beneath it and slightly smaller. Below that are what appear to be some sort of runes.

pssst lets go party with dirty feet in MrA's library while he sleeps!

213Kerian
May 17, 2008, 7:34 pm

K looks over the threshold to MrA's library. "See library," it says. She pulls out a magnifying glass to read the fine print but upon raising it to MrA's library link, all she sees is blue. "This is more peculiar," she thinks. She wonders if this means her socks should be blue, and looks down at her feet to see that her socks are lavender. K shrugs. She begins to place a foot on the blue link. Foot down, an alarm sounds. K quickly moves her foot back and jumps out of MrA's profile page for safety. Pondering, she wonders how she should proceed. She double thinks the request of wiping one's feet before entering the library. After such consideration, K enters the profile page once more. The gateway still sits there in blue, "See library." K looks all around for any sign of a doormat. There is none. "Stumped...No way around it....I'll have to..." K makes a run and enters the library, blaring sound behind her as she runs and wanders aimlessly through MrA's 220 cataloged books. It doesn't take much time to go full circle. K thinks back to what it is she is supposed to be looking for. A particular book cover. Nighttime story seas...a wooden ship. "Ah-ha!" She finds it. Quickly before anyone can catch her running through the library with her lavender socked feet, K makes a dash out of the library, away from the profile page, and to the I Spy thread where she types her findings. She hopes no one notices that she failed to wipe her feet. K lifts a foot and is startled to see text from the sea of text upon the souls of her socks. She quickly slams her foot down and decides to walk with caution until she leaves the thread, hoping no one will know. Slowly, she walks away she she drags one foot across the thread. A *gasp* can be heard from across the thread. K looks back at an LTer whom she cannot make out who it is just yet before she looks down and sees that her foot has been dragging letters. She makes a wild run away from the thread, letters following her as she goes. "You can't stop me!" she yells. K wonders why all of this was necessary and dreads that perhaps visiting MrA's library gave her a case of longpostitis. She wonders if the illness will run it's course by the end of May, and if it will take a new form after that. Shaking her head, she abandons the thread completely.

215MrAndrew

That's been on my TBR list for a while - have you read it? Is it good? Hopefully not too depressing?

I'll post a new one soon....

267biblioholic29
Jun 5, 2008, 11:07 am

I read it, it's very good. I don't think it's too depressing either, he doesn't focus as much on his time as a soldier as he does on the time leading up to his enscription and the time after. I think no matter what it has to end on a note of hope as he obviously made it to NY and wrote a best-selling book! I highly recommend it!

#267 - thanks for the info, I'll have to read that one!

Okay... This cover has a black silhouette of a cat (mostly it's head) facing the left. The left side of the book is red with a shadowy city in the background and the right side of the cover is all black. The title is in mixed font in white lettering at the top and the author's name is at the very bottom.

Yes! I'm putting my brains on the wrack!
Maybe I'll give it a few turns, and see if that helps me remember it better. ;)

Jun 9, 2008, 3:22 pm

Hooray but winning always brings the burden of coming up with a new one.

Oh and isn't The Master and Margarita good. It has been several years now since I read it and I recall it being a bit mind-warping but very interesting.

I just read this book over the weekend. It is a black cover with a picture of a plastic toy Indian and a plastic toy cowboy on the cover and the author's name is at the bottom in bright green.

276elbakerone
Jun 9, 2008, 4:25 pm

RE: Master and Margarita, it's one of those books that I really wish I could've read in the original language (Russian). I had an edition with commentary notes and Bulgakov used plenty of wordplay and subtlety of language that didn't come across in the translation. But overall it was a very bizarre and interesting book!

Not sure on yours.... my first guess would be The Indian in the Cupboard because of the cowboy and Indian figures but that's just a shot in the dark.

277foggidawn
Jun 9, 2008, 4:36 pm

#275 is The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie -- so good. I'm still miffed that it didn't get recognized by the Printz award committee.

I'll be back shortly with another cover for you guys to guess.

278foggidawn
Jun 9, 2008, 4:41 pm

Okay, new cover: In the foreground, a nun and a group of schoolgirls in yellow raincoats. In the background, the Eiffel Tower. The title is in white along the top of the cover, the author's name is in white along the bottom of the cover.

Here is one from the boy:

Black faux leather cover with the title toward the bottom in fancy gold lettering. Under the title, also in gold, is a skull facing right with two swords crossed behind it. Above the title is a working compass, decorated with ships, a sun, and a moon. At the west and east points are inlaid plastic gems.

New one: A unicorn with a heavy golden chain around his neck stands in a field of yellow grass, looking back over his shoulder. Blood drips from his horn.

(I can give more hints to this one if it doesn't get guessed fairly quickly.)

304foggidawn
Jun 11, 2008, 12:12 am

Oh, dear. Time to think of another one. . .

The author's name is at the top of this cover, with the title in the center. Above the title rises a castle. To one side of the title is a green face with sharp-looking teeth, to the other is a scarecrow. Below the title is an old woman walking along a path. A thin gold frame runs around the edge of the cover.

Howl's Moving Castle, of course.

ETA the touchstone, which didn't work the first time.

307Espeon200
Jun 11, 2008, 7:42 pm

Ok, here's an older one.

Blue cover. Dragon with a pair of human riders flies above an island town that humps out of the water. Waves surround the bottom of the cover. On the back is a sparrow hawk also surrounded by sky and sea.

This paperback is older than I am. How's that for longevity...

308jugglingpaynes

The Dragon of Lonely Island

I think my son has read every children's/YA novel that involves a dragon.

309jugglingpaynes

311jugglingpaynes
Jun 11, 2008, 10:54 pm

I've already found three blue books on my son's shelves with dragons carrying assorted people and creatures. Don't these illustrators have any imagination?

My next guess: the farthest shore

312Espeon200
Jun 12, 2008, 1:27 am

The Farthest Shore it is. I managed to pick up all three of the original cycle in a used book store and they are in good condition seeing as the edition was printed sometime in the 70s.

313jugglingpaynes
Jun 12, 2008, 10:26 am

*blushes, because we owned that edition when it was still in the bookstores. But it belonged to my big sister!*

OK, new one:

A wall of grey bricks almost fills the cover. In the lower right hand corner is a woman dressed in a red formless dress with red gloves, a white hat and carrying a basket. Author's name is along the top with the title under it, all in white letters.

cool. I think I had a different cover on that one but "red formless dress with red gloves, a white hat" gave it away.

Next one:
The title and author of this book are in the center of a large sunflower that occupies the whole cover, the background that can be seen is bright red.

Ok... This cover has a dark green border at the top containing the title and author. The scene below is of three people: a woman in a flowing orange-ish dress is seated at the left and looks off to the right side, at her feet are two boys - one is seated and wearing a striped shirt, the other is stretched out on his stomach. He is wearing a checked shirt and is reading/writing a stack of papers in front of him. The papers are blowing away and extend in a chain over the seated woman and into the background.

It is Dandelion Wine. Someone else can post another clue.

329Kerian
Aug 25, 2008, 4:50 pm

Thanks, Letta!

I'm thinking of another book. The cover displays a person wearing a mask over the upper half of their face, revealing the eyes, nose, mouth, and jaw. The lower part of the cover is black. You can see buildings and a bridge. The title is done in purple on the lower half of the book, with the author's name in white at the very bottom of the cover. Guess this book?

330suge
Aug 26, 2008, 1:45 pm

K, is it Masquerade?

*Blush* a belated, but very cheery "Ding ding ding" for 255/256..... and a "ha ha ha" for 253. What would that be called? Sorry my English is not very ah correct.

Ok, the top third of this book is scarlet with the title is in blue letters written over this. There is a vicisous looking dragon shooting fire at a young man on a broom who is reaching towards the bottom of the cover where large stones are piled to get something shiny among the stones.

also:

This book has a blue-ish color and features an rural small town nestled in snow. There are quaint little homes and one church spire towering above all else i the town. There is a bare tree at the foreground. In the back ground there are low mountains.

The second book was written by a woman. A New Yorker.

Ah, I am unbeatable, unconquerable in this game. I claim this thread as my own. It shall be called Sugeland (oooh! that sounds like a groovy place, if I say so myself) (What does that even mean?) and you shall all worship me!!!

Another clue, my lovely subjects? I can think of at least three of her books that have been turned into period films.
