The news out of California is SO sad.
Hopefully, fed forest & emergency pros aren't distracted from helping by Trumpy Bear...

Trump’s Old Tweet Bashing Funding for Smokey Bear Forest Fire Prevention PSAs Is Actually Perfect

Who is paying for that tedious Smokey Bear commercial that is on all the time - enough already!

My friends on #TeamSmokey know I can't prevent unwanted wildfires alone. #OnlyYou can prevent wildfires. #TBT pic.twitter.com/2CpyH9ExEh

There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor. Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!

Finnish President doesn't recall telling Trump Finns do a lot of 'raking' to prevent forest fires
Caroline Kelly | November 19, 2018

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö...the subject of raking was never brought up in his conversations with Trump. He said that they did discuss the California wildfires when they met, and that he told Trump "we take care of our forests."

The Finnish President...intended to convey that although Finland is covered by forests, the nation has a good monitoring system which has helped to prevent catastrophic wildfires. He added that he only sees raking in his own yard, and surmised that raking perhaps came to Trump's mind after he saw firefighters raking some of the burned areas in California.

Still, Trump mentioned raking while surveying the devastation in Northern California on Saturday.

"I was with the President of Finland and he said we have -- much different -- we are a forest nation. He called it a forest nation," Trump said. "And they spend a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things, and they don't have any problem. And when it is, it's a very small problem. So I know everybody's looking at that to that end."

Trump also told Fox News' Chris Wallace during an interview last week that aired on "Fox News Sunday" that he saw firemen raking brush near the wildfires, and that doing so earlier could have prevented the fires.

"I was watching the firemen the other day, and they were raking areas, they were raking areas where the fire was right over there," Trump said. "And they're raking ... little bushes, that you could see are totally dry, weeds. And they're raking them -- they're on fire."

"That should have been all raked out and cleaned out," Trump added. "You wouldn't have the fire."...

Mr. President, with all due respect, you are wrong. The fires in So. Cal are urban interface fires and have NOTHING to do with forest management. Come to SoCal and learn the facts & help the victims. Scott Austin, Pres IAFF 809

Alternative NOAA @altNOAA | 1:07 AM - 19 Nov 2018:

I'm told someone explained Santa Ana Winds to Trump and how they dry out vegetation with basically a katabatic* wind.
Trump actually asked if it was possible to "bulldoze the mountain tops (Sierra Nevada)" to make them "shorter" to "lessen the intensity".

* Interesting explanation of such winds at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katabatic_wind ... A katabatic wind (named from the Greek word κατάβασις katabasis, meaning "descending") is the technical name for a drainage wind, a wind that carries high-density air from a higher elevation down a slope under the force of gravity...

MAKE AMERICA RAKE AGAIN

I ran into this article:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/apos-smarter-apos-finns-hilariously-031217488.html

Trump makes it all seem so simple. Just go out into the forest with all your friends and neighbors and start clearing brush. He's unable to conceptualize how vast an area he's talking about and up and down mountain sides and passes. Maybe he could send Pat Robertson out into the middle of this wilderness to pray to God to stop the wind from ever blowing again. It's not his Mir-a-lago estate where he pays an army of people to tend the grounds and golf course. The No. 1 thing that he can do is take climate change seriously but that's off his agenda and just as much as gun control. He gets too much support from deniers in both camps and flat out refuses to go against them. So he talks a bunch of shit and get ready for next year because it's going to happen all over again and maybe even worse.

I also found pretty funny how Finns poked fun at his bullshit--brought up gun control and a national health care system. As long as your pointing out differences you might as well point out all of it.

W. Bush was supposed to be pretty active at clearing brush. Maybe he could head an army of volunteers...

And the Finns, not letting an opportunity go to waste, have been "replying" to Trumps comment.

Volunteers... Right this moment I'm trying to organize and equip some volunteers to defend a local conservation area against new onslaught of invasive plants. To paraphrase Mr Trump, "No one knew it could be so difficult..." .

Surely not. It's impossible that an influx of non-natives into an area could ever be bad for the natives that were already there.

You must be hallucinating.

Zinke blames ‘environmental radicals’ for deadly California fires
Timothy Cama | 11/19/18

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke blamed “environmental radicals” for the California wildfires that have killed at least 77 people, saying they stop forest management practices that could have prevented the fires.

Days after touring the damage of the Camp fire, the deadliest in California’s history, Zinke went on Breitbart News Sunday and declared “it’s not the time for finger-pointing” on the causes of the fires.

But minutes later, he put the blame squarely on environmentalists, contending that they stood in the way of clearing brush, doing prescribed burns and other actions.

“I will lay this on the foot of those environmental radicals that have prevented us from managing the forests for years. And you know what? This is on them,” Zinke said.

“We have dead and dying timber. We can manage it using best science, best practices,” he continued. “But to let this devastation go on year after year after year is unacceptable, it’s not going to happen. The president is absolutely engaged.”...

Whose Boat Is This Boat? Comments That Don’t Help in the Aftermath of a Hurricane is a picture book made entirely of quotations from President Donald Trump in the wake of Hurricane Florence. It is the first children’s book that demonstrates what not to say after a natural disaster.

On September 19, 2018, Donald Trump paid a visit to New Bern, North Carolina, one of the towns ravaged by Hurricane Florence. It was there he showed deep concern for a boat that washed ashore. “At least you got a nice boat out of the deal,” said President Trump to hurricane victims. “Have a good time!” he told them. The only way his comments would be appropriate is in the context of a children’s book—and now you can experience them that way, thanks to the staff of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Whose Boat Is This Boat? is an excellent teaching tool for readers of all ages who enjoy learning about empathy by process of elimination. Have a good time!

($8.99 and 100% of the proceeds go to hurricane victims)

Sure, as one example. I am told that that influx necessarily had good consequences for the natives.

Article mentions risk of flammable, invasive grasses taking over if scrubby chaparral was cleared. Common Reed (Phragmites "frag-MIGHT-eez"), an exotic grass threatening coasts, wetlands, roadsides, and ditches, may not grow in dry areas, but it sure can be dangerously flammable:

Opinion piece in the Santa Barbara Independent, not placing blame, but asking pertinent questions.

The (Un)natural Disaster of California Fires

ends with:

I found myself asking: How many lives and homes are the Trump administration and fossil-fuel industry willing to cannibalize before change is enacted? Would they burn the world if it meant they would be kings of the ash?

Smokey Bear told when I was a kid that only I can prevent forest fires. That's wrong. I can't do anything to prevent forest fires.

Me? I? Only I? No one else can prevent forest fires?

>19 2wonderY: Why don't you address your question to the Democrats of California who have dominated that state for its entire history? Why do you blame the president? Besides, we have had Democratic presidents, too. They didn't help either did they?

Why don't you address all of your questions to the Democrats of California?: the foul air and pollution, the traffic, the mass shootings, the guns, the fires, the illegal immigration, the drugs, the sexual harassment, the police brutality and racism, the loathsome Hollywood culture, the loathsome practices of Silicon Valley. And...Scientology!

Democrats have caused these. They haven't solved them. Isn't that obvious? So why do you keep voting for them? Or are you going to say that because Reagan had two terms as governor it's all his fault?

California. Get your act together. The rest of us are tired of bailing you out.
