Welp, Spring here is beautiful, although we hadn't expected to be at the house for so long. At least we are seeing lots of bird activity. Babies! Raspberry finches, brown headed nuthatches, titmice, bluebirds. And today, we saw a towhee, which we hadn't seen for a long time.

My amaryllis are blooming like crazy too.

Happy New Thread, Jean! I used to have a "Christmas" cactus that bloomed at Thanksgiving and then a small bloom at Easter. Your amaryllis look great.

So... Hurricane Sally. We were camping about 100 miles or so from home. We got kicked out of the campground because of flooding, and so just gave up the ghost and drove home to see the disaster we'll have to deal with.
The house is fine, but the yard is messed up. Fences are down, part of the decking has been wrecked so the water and power lines to the dock are toast. Lots of wreckage in the yard once the fence came down, so we'll be cleaning up for weeks.
At least our house is fine. I feel horribly for those whose houses got flooded or hit with the surge.
With regard to the surge, this one, for a cat 2 storm, which wasn't even a direct hit, was higher than the cat 4 direct hit we got in about 2005.
Power is out at many people, including us, but we have a whole house generator we bought after that storm in 2005 because it took almost two weeks to get power back then. So we'll see when it comes back.
Our area will be trying to recover for 3 or 4 years.

>138 majkia: Jean, the bad thing about Sally is that she just sat out there churning. It kind of reminds you of the one that just stalled over the Bahamas except this one wasn't as powerful and was moving slightly. My cousin lives just north of Gulf Shores. They were fine. He was able to call on his cellular but other things like his land-line phone and power were off. (He has a generator.) I didn't keep him as I knew he needed to save as much phone charge as he could.

ETA: Is that the same porch from the pic at the top? Did you lose all your screens?

Good to know you are safe! I have a whole house generator that was installed in 2015 when I became widowed. One night alone in the dark house without power was enough to motivate the installation. It was a wise investment.
