My first foray into the Readathon this year. My wife is out of town for the weekend & it's cold & rainy in Oregon (in other words, normal). Currently reading Neuromancer by William Gibson.

Friday afternoon update
Books read from: All the President's Gardens: Madison's Cabbages to Kennedy's Roses - How the White House Grounds Have Grown with America by Marta McDowell. I started reading Coldest Case by Martin Walker and I am listening to She Come By It Natural: Dolly Parton and the Women Who Lived Her Songs by Sarah Smarsh.
Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: I finished reading Beatrix Potter's Gardening Life: The Plants and Places That Inspired the Classic Children's Tales by Marta McDowell, and Pink Suit by Nicole Mary Kelby.
Book Thoughts: Since I am on a Beatrix Potter reading kick I decided to go ahead and request Beatrix Potter's Gardening Life through Inter-Library Loan. It turned out to be a beautiful book and fun to read. The only thing I didn't like was the last half of the book is written in third person and I find that writing style disconcerting and therefore distracting. I also requested All the Presidents' Gardens at the same time. It is by the same author and it looked just as interesting. I am now reading it and learning things I didn't know about the White House Gardens.
Non Book Activities: I haven't done a thing with my boxes. My car looks like a Bag Lady car because it is stacked with boxes. I plan on going up to Gadsden to knit tomorrow so I won't be able to get the boxes out until next week. It has been an interesting two days. I planned to spend the first week sitting at Starbucks drinking coffee and reading books, but instead, I slept in. Answered phone calls, and then started through the check list for check out. I was irritated with our parking services. I had to switch hang tags on my car. I parked in the parking deck where the office is located and when I went to leave it wanted to charge me $10.00 because I didn't have a hang tag that worked for that parking deck. It turns out that our FREE parking isn't all that free. We are restricted as to what decks we can park in. I said to heck with it and drove under the gate and didn't pay. If they send me a bill I will appeal it.

I will be interested to hear what you have to say about Purple Hibiscus. My real life book discussion group read it a couple of years ago and most of us did not like it.

Saturday morning update:
Watching the tennis final this morning. I have a couple non-reading plans: I have potatoes ready to plant and want to experiment with some small batch kraut using collards, kale and turnip greens that are growing in the field and the high tunnel. I also want to make a few more St. Patrick's Day cards. I will work on them while I watch the tennis.
I finished An Island Wedding early yesterday. I loved the series and am hoping there might be another one to take care of one of the story lines. There is a prequel novella that I haven't read yet.
Took a long hot bath yesterday to sooth my achey joints and muscles and kept reading Honeycomb by Joanne M. Harris.
I am listening to the first book in Colgan's Little Beach Street Bakery series. As an inhabitant of a small town, I think I appreciate your loving kindness for the quirky characters who seem to choose rural living.
I read a bit from two others books on the Kindle: The King's Inquisitor and A Woman of No Importance.
Happy weekend!

>20 nrmay: I read several quite good books last month, including A Spell of Good Things. But I really enjoyed the joyfulness and playful humour of The Man Who Died Twice, and I might start reading The Bullet That Missed later this month.

>16 benitastrnad: >21 elkiedee: I am loving the audio version of Purple Hibiscus. It's hard to listen to because of the subject matter, but the narrator (Lisette Lecat) does a fantastic job. As a bonus, I don't have to figure out how to pronounce the unfamiliar-to-me names correctly in my head. The narrator does it for me!

Sunday morning update:
Finished Honeycomb last night. Fantastical fairy tales from Joanne M. Harris
I started the day with A Woman of No Importance and am heading back to it now that I've finished morning chores while I listened to Little Beach Street Bakery. I am reading Wondrous Encounters for Lent.
I want to make a few more St. Patrick's Day cards along with a pot of chili for today and lunches this week.
>27 AnneDC: It took me a few chapters to get into Demon Copperhead but found it incredibly compelling and well written. It led to Beth Macy's books about the opioid crisis. The first one--Dopesick--was set in the same county as Kingsolver's book.

About halfway into Childhood's End and 40 pgs into All the Trouble in the World.
Non-reading activity - went to my grandson's state basketball playoff game. It was a soul-crusher - the other team erased a 9 point lead with less than 2 minutes to go by hitting 3 3-pointers - shots they had been missing all night - and then holding on to a 1 point lead in overtime.

Sunday morning update
Books read from: All the President's Gardens: Madison's Cabbages to Kennedy's Roses - How the White House Grounds Have Grown with America by Marta McDowell. Coldest Case by Martin Walker and I am finished listening to She Come By It Natural: Dolly Parton and the Women Who Lived Her Songs by Sarah Smarsh, and started listening to German Wife by Kelly Rimmer.
Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: I finished reading Beatrix Potter's Gardening Life: The Plants and Places That Inspired the Classic Children's Tales by Marta McDowell. Pink Suit by Nicole Mary Kelby. She Come By It Natural: Dolly Parton and the Women Who Lived Her Songs by Sarah Smarsh.
Book Thoughts: I just finished up a work of nonfiction about a notorious woman. Dolly Parton. This was a look at the career of the famous, or infamous, entertainer, Dolly Parton. This book was written by a feminist scholar and for that reason the book is written using a feminist lens. It is a short book, but it is academic in tone. It is enjoyable, but if you are not into dissecting song lyrics and sussing-out hidden meanings in popular culture this is not the book for you. Dolly Parton is a very good songwriter, singer, and entertainer. However, she is best known for her famous bust line and her unabashed sexuality. This book is about how she has taken this image and has owned it. I found it well researched and well documented, peppered with anecdotes and excerpts from actual interviews it is approachable and clearly intended for a popular audience. There were so many parts of this book that made me downright mad because sexism is rampant in the culture of today and we should be so past that. I read this book as part of my ongoing reading about the Country Music industry and its continued anti-female bias. And because of Dolly's famous bust and all the ribald jokes, innuendos, and denigration about her. This book shed some light on all of that. Now, I await a good biography of the woman.
Non Book Activities: I finished knitting my socks!!! So I started knitting another pair. I made a trip to Gadsden to get started on the new pair because it has been so long since I started the first pair, I couldn't remember how to do it correctly. I also got to drink some fantastic tea! I also met a retired librarian who moved from Montgomery to Gadsden upon retirement - just so she could start over in a place that had no baggage for her. She now knits, reads, and teaches a yoga class there. I really love that little shop and will miss it when I move back to Kansas.

My first R-a-Th. Inspired by what I’ve seen here before and above, I offer my results below.
Books read from: Family Happiness, Laurie Colwin; Sub Tales: Stories that Seldom Surface, Frank and Charles Hood; The Numbers, Nick Pirog; Brothers Karamazov, Theodor Dosteovsky.
Books Listened to: Brain Food, Lisa Mosconi; Brothers Karamazov, Theodor Dosteovsky (solgood episodes, re-listening to what I’ve read to cement it in a bit more).
Dinners: Scallop & Crab Cioppino w/Italian Bread, Cacio e Pepe, and red wine to celebrate weekend visit by eldest offspring; husband’s Skirt Steak w/chimichurri sauce, finished with 2-ingredient chocolate mousse; Soupe Provençale au pistou. An exceptionally good eating weekend because otherwise our visiting, gourmet-leaning son derides our offerings and makes us order in.
Thoughts: when uninterested in the “to-do” list, a Weekend Read-a-thon is the perfect remedy!
Non-book activities: Canine recreation and -ew- taxes.
Total books finished: 2
Total read from/listened to: 5
Total time reading: (hours) 13.5h
Books read from: Family Happiness, Laurie Colwin; Sub Tales: Stories that Seldom Surface, Frank and Charles Hood; The Numbers, Nick Pirog; Brothers Karamazov, Theodor Dosteovsky.
Books Listened to: Brain Food, Lisa Mosconi; Brothers Karamazov, Theodor Dosteovsky (solgood episodes, re-listening to what I’ve read to cement it in a bit more).
Dinners: Scallop & Crab Cioppino w/Italian Bread, Cacio e Pepe, and red wine to celebrate weekend visit by eldest offspring; husband’s Skirt Steak w/chimichurri sauce, finished with 2-ingredient chocolate mousse; Soupe Provençale au pistou. Weekend update - Books Read from:
Morning by Morning by Charles H. Spurgeon
Evening by Evening by Charles H. Spurgeon
God Sees Her by Our Daily Bread Ministries
Holy Bible (NASB)
Thread and Gone by Lea Wait
The Coldest Case by Martin Walker
I didn't complete any. I'm loving Thread and Gone so far. It ties in with a non-fiction I recently read about Mary Queen of Scots and her needlework. Guess what just went missing when the murder occurred? A piece some speculate may have been stitched by the Queen herself.
I need to leave shortly to see if I can get one of the copies of a book I'm supposed to read by our book club next Sunday. I have a Knox County library card. Three branches supposedly have a copy on the shelf. I plan to arrive when they open to hopefully check it out so I don't have to buy it. It's not one I want to own.
