Amber's (scaifea) Thread #6

Hey, everybody!

I'm Amber, a one-time Classics professor, turned stay-at-home parent/lady of leisure, turned part-time library assistant, turned once again Classics professor, and turned librarian again. I spend my free time sewing, writing, knitting, baking, and, of course, reading.

My reading life is happily governed by lists, which means that I read a healthy variety of things across various genres.

I'm 47 going on 12 and live in Ohio with my husband, Tomm; our son, Charlie; Mario, the Golden Retriever; and the newest addition to the family: Agent Fitzsimmons, the Border Collie.

Here I am modeling the gorgeous headband that Ana (the library patron for whom I'm learning Spanish) brought back from Guatemala for me:

The books I have going at once and the On Deck books nearly all come from the following categories and lists:

-14 years ago I started working my way through a handful of awards lists for children's books. I've finished a fair few of those, but I'm still working through the 1001 Children’s Books You Must Read Before You Die list, and I try to stay up to date with several of the YALSA awards each year.

-A mystery

-A romance novel

-Manga

-A book from my wishlist (it's *so* long)

-A book from the Green Dragon 1001 Fantasy List

-A Beauty and the Beast retelling

-An audiobook, which I listen to as I knit/sew/otherwise craft/clean/drive/pack and unpack cargo at work

-Agatha Christie's bibliography

-Stephen Fry's bibliography

-John Boyne bibliography

-Neil Gaiman's bibliography

-Christopher Moore's bibliography

-Maggie Stiefvater's bibliography

-The NEH Timeless Classics list

-The National Book Award list

-The Pulitzer list

-An unread book from my shelves

-A book from my Read Soon! shelves

-Book-a-year challenge: A few years ago I made a year-by-year list to see how far I could go back with consecutive reads. I've since been trying to fill in the gap years.

-A full-on re-read through Shakespeare's stuff.

46. Two Night in Lisbon by Chris Pavone (audiobook) - 8/10
A woman accompanies her husband of 3 months to Lisbon on a business trip. Then he gets kidnapped. She has tons of trust issues for various reasons, so can she believe that the local police and/or the CIA will help her when they don't seem to believe her story? And can she trust her new husband?

I read this one on the glowing recommendation of a patron, who claims it's the best book he's read in a long time. It was...okay. For me it wasn't the page-turner that it was for my patron, but it was still enjoyable, I suppose. My issues with it: the main character spills over into annoyingly paranoid fairly quickly. I also had the twist sussed out more quickly than was fun, which may be why I didn't turn the pages as urgently as the recommender. So, for me, an average thriller.

On the Agenda for Today:
A long-overdue haircut this afternoon, and then Charlie has another track meet this evening. This morning I'm going to work on cleaning up my desk and then maybe spend some time in the sewing room.

On the Reading Front:
I finished up On the Road yesterday, read a bit of Beauty and the Werewolf, and listened to some of The Woman in White.

The Crafting Report:
Coattails Update - yeeeah. That pattern is so messed up and poorly written that I am officially giving up on trying to figure it out. I gave in and ordered Charlie a jacket instead. I don't abandon sewing projects often (in fact, I think this may only be the second time ever), but this one is just too ridiculous. If I have more time, I might try to put together my own pattern (which I should have done in the first place), but yeah, I'm calling it on this one. Lesson learned: don't buy patterns from companies you don't know and trust; instead just make your own.

Anyway. The good news it that now I can move on to the backed-up pile of other projects I'm excited to get to!

What We're Watching:
Yet more Glee.

43lauralkeet
Apr 20, 2023, 7:27 am

Oh dear, I'm sorry about the crappy pattern, Amber. That's so frustrating! I get it though. A few years ago I had a yarn subscription and each shipment included a pattern suited to the yarn. Which would have been great if the patterns were all well designed, fully edited, and tested. Sometimes they were, and those projects turned out well. But sometimes it was a design created by the business owner, which hadn't gone through all the appropriate publishing steps. Lesson learned.

I'm excited to see what you get up to next!

A quick review catch-up before I head out to the track meet:

47. The World Without Us by ALan Weisman (audiobook) - 8/10
Examines from several different viewpoints what the world would look like and how it would adjust if all humankind were to vanish. Hint: it wouldn't miss us much. A good and fascinating read.

48. Mrs. Stephen Fry's Diary by Stephen Fry (Fry bibliography) - 8/10
A silly entry in the Fry corpus. Silly but fun.

49. Given vol 2 by Natsuki Kizu (manga) - 10/10
Four high school and college kids are in a band together and they navigate their friendships and relationships to one another, along with their musicianship. I adore this series and these characters so much.

50. On the Road by Jack Kerouac (books I'm reading with my friend, Rob) - 7/10
Meh. I knew going in that this genre isn't really my thing, but I've always wanted to know what the book was. So, not I've read it. I'm glad I did, since I can now see how its influence has vined out into all sorts of works, both literary and otherwise, but I can't say I enjoyed it much. Sal/Jack et al. seem so self-indulgent and self-serious. Blech.

On the Agenda for Today:
I'm working 9:30-3, then I need to get packed for our trip to Indiana. It's been a long while since we've been able to visit my parents, so it's long overdue.

On the Reading Front:
I finished up The Ghost Drum, read some of The Plot and the Pendulum, some of A Gentleman in Moscow, and listened to more of The Woman in White.

The Crafting Report:
I didn't have time to get into the sewing room yesterday, so nothing to report. I'm hoping that I'll have some down time today at work to get started crocheting a Very Hungry Caterpillar...

So the trip to visit my parents is off; my mom isn't feeling well. I'm bummed because I haven't seen them in so long, but I also, of course, completely understand. We'll get there eventually.

So now I have an unplanned weekend ahead of me. I'm thinking that there will be naps and reading time and time in the sewing room. Tomm went to get us McDonald's pancakes this morning to cheer us up. He's a good man.

On the Reading Front:
I read some Pi: A Biography, listened to some of The Woman in White, and started Freewater.

The Crafting Report:
I made some progress on the Very Hungry Caterpillar yesterday at work. Today I'm hoping to clear off my sewing table and move on to the next project.

What We're Watching:
The latest Ted Lasso, some Schitt's Creek, some West Wing, and an Animal Control.

51. The Ghost Drum by Susan Price (1001 Children's Books) - 9/10
A very cool and interesting children's/YA fantasy book that uses elements of Russian folklore. Evil Czars, a prince locked in a tower, a story-telling cat, good witches, and bad shamans. Think Howl's Moving Castle but make it Siberia and darker. I loved it.

On the Agenda for Today:
I need to do the menu planning for next week and prep my list for tomorrow's grocery shopping. Then I may spend some time in the sewing room, and some time reading. I also would really like to finish up the puzzle I've got going now; it's been a really tough one and I'm ready to move on! Not sure what's for dinner yet. Fried rice, maybe?

On the Reading Front:
I listened to more of The Woman in White and read bits of It's in His Kiss and Freewater.

The Crafting Report:
I got the sewing room all reorganized and ready, and then I sewed up something requested by a friend. Next up: fabric pears for the library display.

What We're Watching:
Some Schitt's Creek, some West Wing, and Sharknado 3.

Errands this morning, including a trip to the fabric shop, Target, and groceries, then I'll probably be in the sewing room this afternoon before picking Charlie up from track practice.

On the Reading Front:
I finished It's in His Kiss, read a bit of Freewater, and listened to more of The Woman in White.

Nothing to report from yesterday. I chose napping and puzzling over crafting.

What We're Watching:
Some Schitt's Creek, some West Wing, and some Abbott Elementary.

52. It's in His Kiss by Julia Quinn (romance) - 9/10
This entry in the series sees Hyacinth get her HEA, plus two mysteries to solve: who her future FIL really is, and where did her fiancé’s grandmother hide her diamonds. Probably my second favorite of the bunch so far - I loved it.

It's taken a while bu I've been meaning to post this for you. Along with my theatre trip last week, I had the day in London. One of my stops was The Garden Museum. In one if the sections on allotment gardening was this series. I loved the idea and thought it might appeal to your crafty self.
There were also spuds and beetroot, but the heritage carrots appealed to me the most.

Today I'm gonna tackle a full-blown reorg of the kitchen pantry. I'm fairly sure there are stroopwafels in there from TWO Christmases ago. It's time. I also want to get into the sewing room for a bit, and maybe take a nap at some point? Tonight is Charlie's spring band concert. Should be a good time.

On the Reading Front:
I read bits of Silverlock and Freewater yesterday, and I'm still listening to The Woman in White.

On the Reading Front:
I made progress on Beauty and the Werewolf yesterday. Still listening to The Woman in White (it's good but hefty).

Charlie has a track meet tonight that I'll have to miss, but Tomm will be there, so it's all good.

On the Reading Front:
I read a bit of Freewater, started My Hero Academia vol 10, and I'll probably finish up The Woman in White today.

Staff Day wasn't half bad, to be honest. The active shooter training (which was NOT interactive, although my taco coma was very real, let me tell you) was really good and helpful. I learned a ton.

Working three days in a row this week - something that doesn't happen very often for me - has thrown my usual schedule of kilter. This afternoon Charlie's friend is coming over for garage band practice, so at least I'll have a soundtrack for some of the madness. Not sure yet what's for dinner.

On the Reading Front:

53. The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins (audiobook) - 9/10
This one's been on my TBR for years, and it did not disappoint. Mysterious, possibly bananas, women walking around at night and just in the out-of-doors in general saying enigmatic and quirky things, drawing tutors falling for their students, possibly-evil-but-maybe-not? men, shady pasts filled with secrets, and strong women with strong sisterhoods. Excellently written and paced, and nicely twisty. I loved it.

Another track meet tonight that I'm hoping will get canceled. 40F, blustery, and rainy isn't my idea of perfect sit-in-the-stands weather, let alone Charlie hurdling weather. Fingers crossed they come to their senses again today. Otherwise, I'm not working today so I'll probably spend most of the day in the sewing room, with a quick break in there somewhere to go vote. There's a school levy on the ballot and I want to make sure I get my vote in for it! It's scary how many people don't want to support education, even when explicitly told it will not raise their taxes. I'd pay more taxes to make sure the schools were properly funded even if I didn't have a kiddo in the system. Yeesh.

On the Reading Front:
I' started The Thief of Time yesterday and so far it's really good. I also finished up Bad Feminist and immediately ordered a copy for Charlie. I don't generally tell Charlie what to read, but I'm going to insist he include this one in his summer reading list. (Review to come hopefully later today.) Charlie's concert band dress code is just that it must be all black, but other than that (and that it's at least slightly dressy), they can wear what they want. I like that policy.

The Fly was...grosser than I remembered it, but we both enjoyed it. I mean, Jeff Goldblum.

55. Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay (audiobook) - 10/10
A collection of essays on women's rights, issues of race, and the harsh truths of Scrabble tournaments.

At times hilarious, at others gut-punching, but always sharp and insightful and important. 56. Destination Unknown by Agatha Christie (audiobook) - 9/10
One woman's husband is missing and she insists she doesn't know where he has gone; another woman's husband has left her and she thinks she has no more reason to live. Their paths cross in the midst of an investigation into missing scientists, secret identities, and treason.

This entry in Christie's bibliography is different from anything else I've read by her. No whip-smart detectives, not locked room murder mysteries; instead it reads more like a wartime spy novel. There are still plenty of Christie-like twists, and I enjoyed it a great deal.

I didn't have time for any print reading yesterday, although I did start listening to The Strain.

The Crafting Report:
I've finished with the first round of cutting for the garden quilt. I ordered a couple more bits of fabric to as a smidge more variety, too.

What We're Watching:
U of Wisconsin-Platteville won the Robotics World Championship, so we watched the final match last night. They had to do the same challenge that Charlie's team faced, so it was fun to watch the masters are work. Very cool.

57. Pi: A Biography by Alfred S. Posamentier (wishlist) - 6/10
Disappointing. It isn't at all well written, and there are factual errors on topics that I *do* know about (for example, in the details of Archimedes' life), which makes me wonder about the rest of it. Also, it's dry when it could have - and should have - been fascinating.

On the Agenda for Today:
It's time, folks. I'm cleaning out the fridge and the deep freezer today. Who knows what ancient treasures I'll find. Also, I was an idiot yesterday and forgot to apply sunscreen at the track meet until too late and my arms are hurting today. I may just stand with my arms in the freezer for an extended period this afternoon... If I have the energy I'll maybe bake a cake today, too. Keema Alu for dinner tonight.

Charlie did well at the meet, though, and of course, HE remembered his sunscreen because he's much smarter than I am.

On the Reading Front:
I read bits of The Changeover, The Plot and the Pendulum, and Freewater yesterday, and I finished listening to The Strain.

58. The Strain by Guillermo del Toro (audiobook) - 7/10
A plane lands at JFK and immediately goes dead in every sense of the word. And so begins a plague of the vampiric kind, and also the race against the clock to stop it. This task is up to a group of people made up of a couple of CDC doctors, a Holocaust camp survivor who has spent his life chasing this monster, and a NYC rat catcher.

I have to say that I expected a more interesting and quirkier story from Guillermo del Toro than what I found here. It's a mediocre vampire story and nothing more. I won't go on with the series.

On the Agenda for Today:
I have a bunch of stuff to take into the library: supplies for Teen Tuesdays, plus, anybody remember the fabric barn playhouse I made for Charlie years ago that fits over a coffee table? Well, we have a farm playset out in the children's section right now, so I thought I'd take that in to go along with the theme. I don't work today but I may pop in just to drop all that stuff off and get the barn set up before tomorrow's preschool story time. I also have a To Do list of little odds and ends that I need to get through, and I'll maybe do some cleaning, too. Charlie Chili for dinner tonight.

On the Reading Front:
I started listening to The Young Elites and read a bit of Freewater.

The Crafting Report:

Woke up to no wifi and boy, I just don't know what to do with myself without access to my interwebs. So, I sort of shuffled aimlessly for a bit, then picked up a book. Imagine that. Anyway, clearly we're back up and running now. I'm working 12-8 today. I'll probably do a bit of cleaning this morning and possibly putter in the sewing room for a bit before that. I made, for the first time ever, a chilled berry soup for dessert last night. It was so good that I can't wait to have it for lunch!

On the Reading Front:
I spent some time with Silverlock and Freewater yesterday, and I'm still listening to The Young Elites.

The Crafting Report:

Quick canter through after a long weekend away.
>174 scaifea: booo! How disappointing that a book that should/could be a nugget turns out to be a dud.

How was the freezer? We try and eat our way through it a bit first, then defrost it, less food to try and store while it does its thing. Our problem is that I'm not always terribly reliable at labeling anything... Which can lead to some slightly odd meals. Freezer surprise.

Hurrah for the band comments, hope the last track meet went OK - apart from the sun screen thing, of course. And OMG. No wifi?! I hope I'd cope, but suspect I'd fret somewhat.

Spaghetti and salad for dinner tonight, I think.

On the Reading Front:
I'm nearly finished with Freewater, and I'm still listening to The Young Elites.

Book Review Catch-Up Time:

59. Freewater by Amina Luqman-Dawson (Newbery Medal) - 9/10
This year's Newbery medalist tells the story of Freewater, a refuge for escaped slaves in the antebellum south. Two children run away from their plantation and are saved by the inhabitants of Freewater. They come to know what it means to be free, and go back to rescue their mother and friends.

A gripping narrative with great characters, I loved that this story was based on the actual existence of such communities in the swamps. I can easily see the book becoming a favorite for middle graders for its story and then leading them to learn more about slavery and the ways black people resisted it. Definitely recommended.

60. My Hero Academia Vol 10 by Kohei Horikoshi (manga) - 10/10
Not much to say about this one besides the fact that I still adore the series.

61. Assassination Classroom Vol 5 by Yusei Matsui (manga) - 8/10
I'm five deep in the series and I'm still not sure I love it. But, I'm invested enough to keep going, for now.

62. The Young Elites by Marie Lu (audiobook) - 8/10
A decade or so ago a virus swept through the land, killing the adults who contacted it and turning the surviving children into malfettos, ones with scars but also special abilities. These malfettos are now adolescents and are, in general, shunned by the rest of society. A few of them have formed a rogue company set on assassinating the king and taking over, so that their kind can live safely and in peace. Adelina is a malfetto who has long been mistreated by her father until one day she flees, is chased down by him, and accidentally uses her powers to kill him. The Young Elites save her from execution and proceed to groom her into becoming a member of their team. But there is darkness in Adelina that no one counted on or can tame.

A good story and I enjoyed the characters, but not enough, really, to continue with the series, I think. At least not for now.

I read some of The Plot and the Pendulum and listened to more of The Night Strangers.

The Crafting Report:
Nope.

What We're Watching:

On the Agenda for Today:
I need to clean off and organize my desk - it's a mess - and then I'll maybe spend some time in the sewing room, since I didn't get there yesterday. This afternoon we need to take Charlie's luggage to school to get it checked in for his 8ths grade trip to DC (they leave tomorrow morning). He's excited; I'm both happy for him and super jealous. Meatloaf and potatoes for dinner tonight.

On the Reading Front:
I finished Silverlock yesterday, read some Beauty and the Werewolf, and listened to more of The Night Strangers.

The Crafting Report:
I did a little Death Star knitting yesterday.

What We're Watching:
Jessica Jones and Animal Control.

64. The Witches by Stacy Schiff (audiobook) - 8/10
A thorough and thoroughly interesting look at the Salem witch trials and the possible motives behind the frenzied turns it took. It's well-written and just as nicely researched. Recommended, if you're looking to read about the event, this is a great option.

65. Silverlock by John Myers Myers (Green Dragon 1001 Fantasy Books) - 6/10
A man who survives a shipwreck is saved by someone who becomes his guide through the Commonwealth of Letters, where they wash ashore and where they encounter all sorts of characters from mythology and literature.
Meh. Interesting idea, but not carried out very well. The main character is in no way likable, nor are many of the others. And I think the interpretation of the literary and mythological nods could have been more clever/inventive, too.

On the Agenda for Today:
Welp, Charlie's on his way to DC - we had to have him at the school at 5:30 this morning! - and I'm settling into my first cup of coffee. I have an appointment for an oil change later this morning, and then I'm going to do my best to get into my sewing room today. It's been too long. Tomm's taking me out to dinner tonight to a place we've never been. It looks amazing, though:

https://cameronsamericanbistro.com/

I think I'm getting either the salmon or the pasta, and I'm definitely trying a dessert drink of some kind.

On the Reading Front:
I read a bit of Wildwood yesterday, and I'm nearly finished with The Night Strangers.

The Crafting Report:
Nope.

What We're Watching:
A bit of Schitt's Creek, some West Wing, and some SNL.

I hope Charlie has a great time in DC! School trips like that are such a rite of passage. I was thinking this was his first time doing something like this but then remembered he went on a band trip not too long ago so he's an old hand. I know you'll miss him but it sounds like you and Tomm are doing what you can to distract yourselves.

On the Agenda for Today:
I slept in! On a weekday! Woot! I'll do some cleaning, some laundry, and then probably some sewing today. I think we're doing Mexican takeaway for dinner tonight.

Last night's meal was so good! I had the pasta, which was amazingly fresh and delicious, and then the pineapple upside down cake, and omg, I've not had one so good in a long time. It was a lovely date night with Tomm.

Charlie reported in last night that he had a fun first day and sent us a photo of the space shuttle they saw and the air and space museum. Very cool.

On the Reading Front:
I started Mother May I, which I checked out of the library because it was on my colleague's display for May (all titles have May in them) - nobody was checking any of her books out and she was bummed so I secretly took two of them so that when she came in the next day there would be blank spots for her to fill - and it's really good so far! Very seat-edgy. I also finished listening to The Night Strangers and started Crazy Rich Asians.

The Crafting Report:
I actually did some sewing! I'm working on the community garden quilt.

What We're Watching:
Some West Wing.

66. The Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian (audiobook) - 9/10
A pilot, who is one of the few survivors of one of his flights, moves with his family to a rambling, old Victorian house in a small, Northern New Hampshire town in an attempt to reset and recuperate from the accident. But the town is filled with strange folk who seem to love herb gardening more than is customary, and the house is either haunted or it's all in the pilot's head. It certainly doesn't help the creep factor that the townsfolk seem overly interested in his twin daughters...

The Shining meets Rosemary's Baby. Excellently creepy atmosphere, and nicely told in such a way that keeps you guessing for a good long while if the monsters are real or not. A supernatural thriller that doesn't get too scary. I loved it.

On the Agenda for Today:
I'm working the 12-8 shift and before that I'll probably just putter around a bit. Maybe I'll pop into the sewing room for a while? We'll see.

Charlie called last night and is clearly having the time of his life. He was really impressed with Arlington, and they managed to add the National Cathedral to their schedule yesterday and he was blown away. I've been there, too, and adored it. I'm so happy that he's getting this opportunity and sharing it with his best friends. I'm still jealous, but also super happy for him.

On the Reading Front:
I started Throne of Glass yesterday, read a bit of The Darkness Outside Us, ditched Crazy Rich Asians (the audio just wasn't working for me), and started listening to Ash.

The Crafting Report:
I made some progress on the quilt yesterday, and I also perused the pattern websites to make a like of things I'd like - Joann Fabrics is having pattern sales over the next couple of weekends.

What We're Watching:
More West Wing.

285scaifea

On the Agenda for Today:
Another 12-8 shift, but then Charlie gets home around 8:30 tonight! I've missed that kiddo.

Before going in today I need to do the menu planning and get my grocery list ready for tomorrow, then I need to bake some cookies for tonight's Craft and Chat. Whew. Busy morning.

On the Reading Front:
I listened to some Ash and started My Hero Academia vol 11.

The Crafting Report:
I worked on piecing for the garden quilt yesterday, and then at work I started putting together the community garden display, because apparently I am now the "mastermind" behind the big displays. So, I spent most of my shift with pool noodles, a hot glue gun, and an exacto knife. I'm happy to report that I neither burned myself nor suffered any lacerations at all. Success!

What We're Watching:
More West Wing!

>285 scaifea: I am still struggling with ideas for decorating our library for summer. We're not on the CSLP theme with you guys, so ours is "Adventure" this year, which is way too broad for me to narrow things down. On the Agenda for Today:
The Kiddo Is Back Home!!! Currently still sleeping, but HOME. WOOT!!

I need to do the grocery shopping this morning, plus I'm going to hop into the fabric store to take advantage of their pattern sale. Then this afternoon Charlie has a end-of-the-year gathering with the robotics club at the local frozen custard stand. And yes, I will be treating myself to some delicious FroCus. Not sure what's for dinner tonight yet. Possibly Frozen Friday, but if Charlie is craving actual food after his trip, I'll whip up something else.

On the Reading Front:
I read a bit of The Darkness Outside Us and listened to more Ash.

The Crafting Report:
I finished putting together our community garden display at the library - we're starting out with sprouts and will gradually replace those, throughout the summer, with veggies:

On the Agenda for Today:
Yesterday was *bananas* at the library - we weren't super busy, but we were hustling to get the last-minute things ready for Tuesday, which is the first day of SLP (Summer Library Program).

This morning Tomm and I are heading to the nursery for flowers - we're a bit behind schedule with all that - and then I will do some laundry, a bit of cleaning, and maybe work on the garden quilt some. I badly need to start a new thread here, too, and I have two backlog reviews to complete. Ooof. Hop to it, Scaife!

On the Reading Front:
I started Hollow Kingdom yesterday and am already in love with it. So good. I also read a bit of The Darkness Outside Us and listened to some Lunatics.

The Crafting Report:
I finished the Very Hungry Caterpillar!
