Comics creator Bernie Mireault died aged 63. Mireault's works include his independent comic series The Jam Mackenzie Queen, in addition to mainstream projects such as Fallout: J. Robert Oppenheimer, Leo Szilard, and the political science of the atomic bomb and The DC Universe by Neil Gaiman.

Military historian Alfred Goldberg died recently, aged 105. Goldberg's works include A history of the United States Air Force, 1907-1957 and Pentagon 9/11.

Jazz journalist and advocate Dan Morgenstern died September 7 aged 94. In addition to the liner notes on hundreds of records, Morgenstern's works inculde Living with Jazz: A reader edited by Sheldon Meyer and Jazz People.

Actor James Earl Jones died September 9 at the age of 93. The story of his life was told in Voices and Silences. He narrated many books on tape with his fabulous voice. 😞RIP. May the force be with you always.

I once visited a coal mine in West Virginia where he filmed the movie Matewan. The locals there still loved him.

Film director, screenwriter, and journalist Laurent Tirard died September 5 aged 57. Tirard's works include Moviemakers' master class : private lessons from the world's foremost directors and Mas lecciones de cine / More Lessons of Theater: Entrevistas / Interviews.

Illustrator and comics creator John Cassaday died September 9 aged 52. Cassaday co-created the DC/Wildstorm Planetary series of comics; his works include Astonishing X-Men, Vol. 1: Gifted, Planetary: All over the World and Other Stories, and Hellboy: Weird Tales, Vol. 1.

Novelist, journalist, and founder of DownSouth Press Tina McElroy Ansa died September 10 aged 74. Ansa's works include Ugly ways : a novel, The hand I fan with, and Baby of the family.

Comics artist Karl Moline died aged 51. Moline's works include co-creating the BtVS character Melaka Fray, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 Volume 4: Time of Your Life and X-Factor, Vol. 9: Invisible Woman has Vanished.

Jewish physician and artist Mark H Podwal died September 13 aged 79. Podwal's works include The menorah story, Jerusalem sky : stars, crosses, and crescents, A Jewish bestiary : a book of fabulous creatures drawn from Hebraic legend and lore, and Elie Wiesel's book The Golem.

>12 karenb: it's a book you have to take your time with and read carefully. Then you should find the rhythm. Looking at some reviews here made me think that some of the people tried to rush through it. Also names---people lose track and get frustrated and especially if the characters have unfamiliar sounding names. Often if there are a lot of characters I'll tear out a page from a notebook and start writing names down and sometimes grouping them or writing a short couple word explanation of who they are or what they do. I don't know how you could get through War and Peace or the other big Russian blockbusters otherwise.

Tony Bunyan died September 9 aged 83. His works include The political police in Britain, Statewatching the new Europe : a handbook on the European state, and Apocalypse Soon.

Fredric Jameson died September 22 aged 90. Jameson's works include Postmodernism, or, The cultural logic of late capitalism, The political unconscious : narrative as a socially symbolic act, and Archaeologies of the future : the desire called utopia and other science fictions.

Former ambassador, broadcaster, and economic journalist Peter Jay died September 22 aged 87. His works include Road to riches: or the wealth of man and Apocalypse 2000.

Singer-songwriter and actor Kris Kristofferson died September 28 at the age of 88. It doesn’t appear that he wrote a book on his own he did write the introduction to several others including A Man Called Cash and The Bitter End: Hanging out at America’s NightClub.

Dame Maggie Smith, stage and screen actor, died on 27 September at 89. She acted in plays by Shakespeare and Ibsen, and her many films included adaptations of many novels, including the Harry Potter series, Evil Under the Sun, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Room With a View and many others.

Writer and workshop teacher Tom Spanbauer died September 21 aged 78. Spanbauer's works include The man who fell in love with the moon : a novel, Now is the hour, and I loved you more.
