Journalist and historian Tim Bowden died September 1 aged 87. Bowden's works include One crowded hour : Neil Davis, combat cameraman, 1934-1985, Changi photographer : George Aspinall's record of captivity, and Antarctica and back in sixty days.

Comics creator Bernie Mireault died aged 63. Mireault's works include his independent comic series The Jam Mackenzie Queen, in addition to mainstream projects such as Fallout: J. Robert Oppenheimer, Leo Szilard, and the political science of the atomic bomb and The DC Universe by Neil Gaiman.

Military historian Alfred Goldberg died recently, aged 105. Goldberg's works include A history of the United States Air Force, 1907-1957 and Pentagon 9/11.

Jazz journalist and advocate Dan Morgenstern died September 7 aged 94. In addition to the liner notes on hundreds of records, Morgenstern's works inculde Living with Jazz: A reader edited by Sheldon Meyer and Jazz People.

Actor James Earl Jones died September 9 at the age of 93. The story of his life was told in Voices and Silences. He narrated many books on tape with his fabulous voice. 😞RIP. May the force be with you always.

I once visited a coal mine in West Virginia where he filmed the movie Matewan. The locals there still loved him.

Illustrator and comics creator John Cassaday died September 9 aged 52. Cassaday co-created the DC/Wildstorm Planetary series of comics; his works include Astonishing X-Men, Vol. 1: Gifted, Planetary: All over the World and Other Stories, and Hellboy: Weird Tales, Vol. 1.

Novelist, journalist, and founder of DownSouth Press Tina McElroy Ansa died September 10 aged 74. Ansa's works include Ugly ways : a novel, The hand I fan with, and Baby of the family.

Comics artist Karl Moline died aged 51. Moline's works include co-creating the BtVS character Melaka Fray, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 Volume 4: Time of Your Life and X-Factor, Vol. 9: Invisible Woman has Vanished.

Ballet dancer Michaela DePrince died aged 29. DePrince's works include Taking flight: from war orphan to star ballerina and Ballerina dreams : from orphan to dancer.

Minister and university leader Lois Miriam Wilson died September 13 aged 97. Wilson's works include Miriam, Mary and Me, Stories seldom told: Biblical stories retold for children & adults, and Like a mighty river.

Novelist, writer, and editor Elias Khoury died September 15 aged 76. Khoury's works include Gate of the Sun: Bab El Chams, Yalo, and White masks.

Jewish physician and artist Mark H Podwal died September 13 aged 79. Podwal's works include The menorah story, Jerusalem sky : stars, crosses, and crescents, A Jewish bestiary : a book of fabulous creatures drawn from Hebraic legend and lore, and Elie Wiesel's book The Golem.

>12 karenb: it's a book you have to take your time with and read carefully. Then you should find the rhythm. Looking at some reviews here made me think that some of the people tried to rush through it. Also names---people lose track and get frustrated and especially if the characters have unfamiliar sounding names. Often if there are a lot of characters I'll tear out a page from a notebook and start writing names down and sometimes grouping them or writing a short couple word explanation of who they are or what they do. I don't know how you could get through War and Peace or the other big Russian blockbusters otherwise.

Bestselling novelist Nelson DeMille died September 17 aged 81. DeMille's works include Plum Island from the John Corey series, The General's Daughter from the Paul Brenner series, and The Charm School.

Singer-songwriter J.D. Souther age 78 on the 17th. Penned some great songs, some hits for the Eagles.

Chef Greg Malouf has died, age 64. Malouf's works include Turquoise: A Chef's Travels in Turkey, Saha : a chef's journey through Lebanon and Syria, and (with spouse Lucy Malouf) Arabesque : modern Middle Eastern food.

Comedy writer and performer Ian Davidison died September 8 aged 84. His works include (with Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker) In a packed programme tonight, The two Ronnies: but first - the news, and Bumper Book of the Two Ronnies.

Tony Bunyan died September 9 aged 83. His works include The political police in Britain, Statewatching the new Europe : a handbook on the European state, and Apocalypse Soon.

Fredric Jameson died September 22 aged 90. Jameson's works include Postmodernism, or, The cultural logic of late capitalism, The political unconscious : narrative as a socially symbolic act, and Archaeologies of the future : the desire called utopia and other science fictions.

Former ambassador, broadcaster, and economic journalist Peter Jay died September 22 aged 87. His works include Road to riches: or the wealth of man and Apocalypse 2000.

Singer-songwriter and actor Kris Kristofferson died September 28 at the age of 88. It doesn’t appear that he wrote a book on his own he did write the introduction to several others including A Man Called Cash and The Bitter End: Hanging out at America’s NightClub.

Dame Maggie Smith, stage and screen actor, died on 27 September at 89. She acted in plays by Shakespeare and Ibsen, and her many films included adaptations of many novels, including the Harry Potter series, Evil Under the Sun, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Room With a View and many others.

Chemistry professor and genealogy historian George K. Schweitzer died September 20 aged 99. Schweitzer's works include Pennsylvania genealogical research, War of 1812 genealogy, and Handbook of genealogical sources.

Writer and workshop teacher Tom Spanbauer died September 21 aged 78. Spanbauer's works include The man who fell in love with the moon : a novel, Now is the hour, and I loved you more.

Jesuit priest and theologian Norbert Lohfink died September 23 aged 96. Lohfink's works include Qoheleth, Theology of the Pentateuch : themes of the Priestly Narrative and Deuteronomy, and The covenant never revoked : biblical reflections on Christian-Jewish dialogue.

Christian apologist, theologian, lawyer, and historian John Warwick Montgomery died September 25 aged 92. Montgomery's works include History and Christianity, Faith founded on fact: Essays in evidential apologetics, and The suicide of Christian theology.

Baseball great Pete Rose died September 30 at the age of 83. His books include My Prison Without Bars, Pete Rose: My Story, and Play Hungry: The Making of a Baseball Player.

Former co-host of American Pickers, Frank Fritz died September 30 at the age of 60. He wrote How to Pick Vintage Motorcycles.

Long time actor John Amos. From Good Times to The West Wing he was always good.

Religious scholar Kari Vogt died September 19 aged 85. Vogt's works include Bruddet : hellige krigere og en ny verdensorden, Kvinnenes kulturhistorie, and New directions in Islamic thought : exploring reform and Muslim tradition.

Children's book author Thomas Rockwell died September 27 aged 91. Rockwell's works include How to eat fried worms and its sequels, How to fight a girl and How to get fabulously rich.

Poet, teacher, and bookseller Lewis Turco died September 25 aged 90. Turco's works include The book of forms : a handbook of poetics, Dialogue : a Socratic dialogue on the art of writing dialogue in fiction, and The book of literary terms : the genres of fiction, drama, nonfiction, literary criticism, and scholarship.

Law professor and philanthropy influencer Joel L. Fleishman died September 30 aged 90. Fleishman's works include The foundation : a great American secret : how private wealth is changing the world and (with Thomas J. Tierney) Give smart : philanthropy that gets results.

Archaeologist and former curator at the British Museum Ralph Jackson died September 16 aged 73. Jackson's works include Doctors and diseases in the Roman Empire and (with Richard Hobbs) Roman Britain.

Artist, curator, and teacher Timothy Hyman died September 7 aged 78. Hyman's works include Sienese painting : the art of a city-republic (1278-1477), a monograph on Bonnard, and the catalogue for Carnivalesque, a national touring exhibition.
