Where are you in fantasyland? October 2024

I was recently in Toronto, Salem (Massachusetts), and a couple of other places en route to New Orleans in Cherie Dimaline's excellent VenCo. Just happens to be a good witchy novel for spooky season.

I'm back in an alternative 14th century China with She who became the sun, re-reading this amazing book before I starting the second and final one.

I'm in Zoo City with Zinzi December. I thought that it was horror, but it's noir urban fantasy.

I'm back to Roshar with Oathbringer.

In Western Massachusetts looking for the Book of Night.

Still chipping away at Oathbringer - about 75% complete. It gets pretty sloggy at times but I'm sticking with it.

Now in the twin walled cities of Sun-Er, thanks to Chloe Gong's Immortal longings.

Just returned from the England of League of Dragons, the 9th & last book of the Temeraire sequence. It was great fun up to the end. Since it incorporates naval-type adventure, dragons, and alternative history, it was a good match for me. It's also praiseworthy that Novik, unlike some series authors, knows when to end a series. I like the way she folds in the acquisitive, grasping nature of dragons into the books in an original way.

Just back from the England of The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean, where reclusive clans of human-like people eat printed material and absorb the subject matter -- and struggle with family members who have more sinister eating habits. Darker than I expected. Dean has original ideas and an ambitious agenda, but she just manages to carry it off.

Just left Elfhome after re-reading the whole series to get up to speed for the newest entry, Storm Furies.
Not all of it was as good as I remembered it. Too many sloppy editing errors - words missing, swapping two characters names mid scene, spelling errors (like using jam instead of jamb) - and too many plot holes.
And the two most recent novels suffered from shoehorning too many characters from Project Elfhome into the main plot line, as well as a general inability to critically edit - using two novels to cover 24 hours of action is just excessive. If Wen Spencer had kept to the fan fiction spirit of Project Elfhome, both Harbinger and Storm furies would have been better off.
I might continue reading new entries in this series, but I am not sure they are auto-buy any more.

I'm in France with Lestat for the Blood Communion, the last installment of The Vampire Chronicles.

I was in Bath (and environs) and London with The sinister booksellers of Bath. I didn't really remember much from the first book, but that's okay.

(Also, yay for living in the future, so I could easily find out what stuff looked like, especially Purbeck marble.)
