Majkia Tries to Stay Focused

1majkia
Edited: Dec 19, 2024, 8:49 am

I'm trying to spend most of my reading time on series I've already started. This is my attempt to do that better this year than last.

I'm going to give star ratings to books based on how much I enjoyed it, rather than attempt to rate a book as to how it is written, what it is about, or how high-falutin' it thinks it might be. I might, though, just chicken out again and not rate anything. We'll see...

My challenges are:
1. TBR challenge - books I've had in my TBR for awhile and have been avoiding or just don't hit the genres I read most. This is for the TBR Challenge Group. I'm trying to read 2 a month.

2. Sci Fi Focus Series - no real aim as to how many of any of the focus series categories. My favorite genre.

3. SFF Focus Series - I have fewer of these series and lately have been disappointed in many SFF books. So we'll see how this goes.

4. Mystery/Thriller Series - I've been caught up in spy fever lately (I blame Slough House books and the Apple Slow Horses series for this) so I'm reading a bunch of older thriller spy series.

5. Historical/Alt History Series - Not too many of these but same as above. I may add a few more series to this.

6. Library Books - I have a ton in my wishlist there, so want to read at least one a month.

7. Kindle Unlimited books - Again, I have quite a few, including some that fit in above categories. I'll track them both places. I aim to read 2 per month.

8. W(h)imsey reading. I want to spell that 'Wimsey' because of a certain guy who tends to piffle alot, but probably everyone will just think I can't spell. Anyway, here's where I wander off plan and pick up newer books, or try out new series or authors. I'm hoping to keep this category small(er). We'll see.

9. LITSY challenges as listed.

In addition, I'll be wandering in and out of our KITs and CATs, and BingoDOG (which I've never manange to complete and doubt I will this year either).

I'm an introvert so tend not to post a lot or talk alot beyond the basics but I'll try to say more about the books I've read this year.

I'm reading Ilium. Firstly, I didn't realize this was the author who wrote Hyperion when I first put it on my TBR challenge. I didn't care for Hyperion I found it needlessly confusing. And now Ilium is even worse. Several different stories with no obvious connection between them. Characters who are obnoxious or boring.

At least Chapter 8 with the dinosaur was satisfying. Crunch.

I'll try to keep on with this tome but not sure how long I'll hold out.

Is there any sense to be found in the latter part of the book?

The Suspect - L R Wright
Series: Karl Alberg #1
pages: 252

Interesting and surprising beginning of a Canadian mystery series. I liked how uncomfortable Karl can be in situations. He's not the typical cop. He's vulnerable, crotchety at times, and stubborn. He's also sometimes needy.

The victim was well portrayed and complex with depths and surprises. The mystery, while we knew who dunnit from the beginning, was still intriguing enough to hold my interest easily.

Ilium - Dan Simmons
Series: Ilium #1 - 752 pages
Audiobook read by Kevin Pariseau

Challenges: TBR Challenge, AlphaKIT, BFB

I found the start very confusing and disjointed. Three totally unrelated stories, one of the battle of Troy, a second robots on Io, and a third humans living on a reconstructed world with essentially no knowledge of their history or geography, and obnoxious mostly.

I finally stopped trying to make sense of the story and just read it. At the end, of course, the three pieces come together. However, I found that even so, much of it made little sense to me, as to the whys and wherefores.

I'm undecided if I will read book 2.

Zodiac - Neal Stephenon

Challenges: AlphaKIT, TBR Challenge, BingoDog

Wow. This wasn't what I expected in many ways. I love Stephenson's works so there is that. Very Very sciency so a slow read for me but oh so interesting.

It's the story of an eco activist who, as usual, gets labeled terrorist as he takes on corporate entities who are knowingly polluting the waters in and around Boston.

The title, btw, if you are wondering, refers to the zodiac boats he (and Greenpeace notably) uses to harrass polluting ships and he uses to look for sources of pollution so he can pinpoint the company involved.

The real heart-stopping action isn't until the last third or so of the book, but well worth the wait.

Everyone On This Train is a Suspect - Benjamin Stevenson
Series: Earnest Cunningham #2
Audiobook read by Barton Welch, Megan Smart

How can I not love a book where an Oxford Comma is a clue!
Second in the series, and a strong second. I love the whole first person narrative and the narrator talking to the reader. He sets out the rules, points out where he's followed them, and even lets you know when he's identified the killer. I confess I didn't solve it, probably because I was too busy enjoying the narrative.

Architects of Memory - Karen Osborne
Series: Memory War 1
I listened to the audiobook read by Sophie Arnoss

Challenges: AlphaKIT, Focus SciFi,

At times confusing, but very well written and imagined. I loved how alien the aliens were and how wrong the humans were about what was going on, simply because they didn't understand anything.

Characters, the main ones at any rate, were well drawn. Plot was twisty and surprising.

Looking forward to book 2

Audiobook: read by the Author, surprisingly well.

Seven Surrenders - Ada Palmer
Terra Ignota #2

Challenges: Sci Fi Focus, AlphaKIT, BingoDOG

A future world which has done away with wars and hatred finds itself disintegrating when the truth comes out.

Complex plot, which is hard to follow at times, and world-building that is believable sort of. The dirty politics is human though.

The Spies of Zurich - Richard Wake
Series: Alex Kovaks #2

Challenges: AlphaKIT, Focus Mystery

Alex is a spy. He's not really good at it, but does his best. He's been run out of Austria as Hitler took it over, now he's wondering if Hitler is coming for Switzerland. He tries to do what he can to help the Czech spy network, and the French network, but the more he tries the less they seem to take the info passed on and use it. He's frustrated and getting desperate.

I really enjoyed this view of spies. No fancy weaponry, just yeoman doing what they can for their countries.

I've undergone a major surgery (open heart) and am recovering. I did some reading while in hospital and in rehab but wasn't organized enough to keep a list of what I read. I couldn't read, actually, all I could manage were audiobooks.

I finished my re-read and first read of the last book of The Expanse series by James S A Corey and it was wonderful.
I listened to a few more, none of which were particularly memorable but I enjoyed them anyway. Too bad I can't remember them all, lol.

At any rate, my numbers are off, and I don't care right now, so am going to just pretend the last half of February didn't really happen in this dimension.

Paradise (Expeditionary Force) - Craig Alanson
Series: Expeditionary Force #3

Fun series, with Skippy, the alien beer can, constantly stealing the show.

The alien beer can sounds like a must read!

An alien beer can? How do people come up with such things? The imagination is endlessly fascinating.

I know! Isn't it wonderful.

The Big Four - Agatha Christie
Oevre #8

Meh. Disappointment after the goodness of last month's mystery. I found it a bit disjointed and not very compelling.

Resolute (Lost Fleet) - Jack Campbell
Series: Lost Fleet Outlands #2

Always interesting with great space battles. And new aliens!

The Old Silent - Martha Grimes

As usual, complex mystery with lots of history behind what happens.

Something Wicked - E X Ferrars

Very slow mystery. Interesting, but slooooooow.

Carthage - Joyce Carol Oates

This was a very strange book. It is ostensibly about the possible murder of a teen by her elder sister's fiance, who has just returned from war badly wounded, body and soul. He admits to killing the girl but he is so broken it is unclear if what he believes is the truth or not.

Delves deep into psyches all over the place, but I found the ending too open ended for me. I'd have rather had more of a resolution than we got.

Still, a good and interesting read.

Red Warning - Matthew Quirk

Spy novel about a threat to Washington DC. It was okay, but it never really captured my full attention.

The Blind Assassin - Margaret Atwood

Beautifully written, as usual for Atwood. Deep in thoughts and feelings. I did find it confusing though.

I've been doing a crappy job at updating my threads.
I was in hospital for two weeks (infection and myasthenia gravis flare up as a consequence). Currently in rehab hoping to go home Nov 1st.

I've been able to enjoy audio books but one symptom of mg is blurry vision so not reading ebooks very often.

Hopefully when I get home I'll remember the books I've finished!

>185 majkia: Oh, Jean, I know someone who has MG and it has taken such a toll on him--that is really tough. I'm glad to hear you've made it to rehab and crossing my fingers you'll go home November 1!

I hope you feel better fast and get to go home! My mom was in a physical rehab center this summer and did her PT just because she wanted to go home so badly.
