MARCH/APRIL Progress Thread

We are looking at birds that are signs that Spring is here or almost!

Spring birds are marked by the return of migratory species and increased activity, with early signs including American robins, Red-winged blackbirds, Eastern bluebirds, and Phoebes. Key species returning or becoming active in spring include the Ruby-throated hummingbird, Baltimore oriole, Indigo bunting, and various warblers. They are often identified by their courtship songs, nesting behaviors, and brighter plumage.

Early Signs of Spring (Late Winter/Early Spring)
American Robin: Often seen searching for worms on lawns.

Red-winged Blackbird: Males return to wetlands to establish territories with a distinctive trill.

Eastern Bluebird: A symbol of spring that begins nesting in early spring.

Common Grackle: Frequently arrives in large flocks.

Killdeer - A shorebird you can see without going to the beach, Killdeer are graceful wading birds common to lawns, golf courses, athletic fields, and parking lots.

Migratory & Colorful Spring Arrivals
Ruby-throated Hummingbird: One of the first hummingbirds to appear, often in mid-March.

Baltimore Oriole: Known for bright orange and black colors, often seen near feeders.
My home town team mascot - so beautiful

Rose-breasted Grosbeak: Features a distinct rose-hued chest and melodious song.

Indigo Bunting: Bright blue birds returning from migration.

Warblers: Many species (e.g., Yellow-rumped, Palm) migrate through in spring.

Sorry, Chèli, at the end of February I had reached 16 ROOTs, not 14.

4kac522
Edited: Mar 3, 2:36 am

Cheli:

I just checked and my ticker says 9 roots, which is correct, but the list above has only 2.

If that's not what you see, let me know.

I did add one yesterday, so it was 8 roots as of Saturday 2/28. Not sure if that caused a problem.

ETA: I just added one more, so now I have 10 roots.

5atozgrl
Edited: Mar 2, 7:01 pm

I had 5 ROOTs completed by the end of February, plus one more finished yesterday on March 1. My ticker is current, so I'm not sure why the count above was wrong.

>1 cyderry: I love all the spring birds. Some of them are year round here, though I have heard that the robins we have in winter are actually visitors from further north.

Hello! I was at 7/40 rather than 5 at the end of this month. But, it actually should have been the 8/40 that it currently shows.

Love the bird thread. Killdear have a terrible name but they are some of the cutest little creatures.

15EGBERTINA
Mar 3, 4:25 pm

>14 Kyler_Marie: The thing that always breaks my heart about Killdeer is that they are kind of terrible mothers. Whenever, I would be making deliveries, the mother would leave her nest- which is on the ground usually in rocks, and pretend she had an injured wing to keep me away from her nest; but instead, I always knew now where her nest was. :/
