The island of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia was called 'Ascension Island' by Europeans in the early 1800's. At some point that name was replaced by a European rendering of the indigenous name for the island, and was spelled by Europeans as 'Ponape'. Now, however, the island's name is considered to be properly spelled as 'Pohnpei'.
Per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pohnpei#Languages :
"The Pohnpeian language (formerly called "Ponapean") and its dialects are the indigenous languages of Pohnpei. The Federated States of Micronesia government also uses Pohnpeian as a regional language."
Right now, 'Ponape' appears in the LT language list. I'm suggesting that it be changed to 'Pohnpei' or better yet 'Pohnpeian'. Consider this use case for the latter form, from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pohnpeian_language : "Pohnpeian is a Micronesian language spoken as the indigenous language of the island of Pohnpei ...". An English speaker would naturally use the words 'Okinowan', 'Spanish', or 'Japanese' as the first word of a sentence like that, rather than 'Okinowa', 'Spain', or 'Japan'.

LT's language list depends on the Library of Congress language names, used as a MARC standard, I believe.

True, but I know they are looking into the possibility of changing the display names: https://www.librarything.com/topic/378667#n9178962

No, we can change names. We just can't change whole categories. I'll make the change.
