Sorry for the delay everyone. Here's the quote:
But instead of vomit, what came out of ________ was a long, low buzz - the sound of a factory machine which has been put under severe strain. ________'s eyes bulged from his face like glass marbles and his cheeks were so taut that little crescents of shadow appeared under the corners of his eyes. It went on and on, a rumbling, rasping noise, and when it finally ceased, the genny out back seemed far too loud.

This is a bit of a cheek as I failed to post last time and I'm not sure I can really be bothered this time either, but is it The Green Mile?
3QueenOfDenmark
No, not the Green Mile.
4Swinny
Hm... I'm thinking it's from one of the stories in Everything's Eventual, not sure why. This does sound very familiar though.
7QueenOfDenmark
It is Dreamcatcher, when Jonesy and Beaver are in the cabin with McCarthy when he first shows up. It's his name I blanked out. Your go Beeg, well done.
8beeg
________ gave him a final, furious glance, his lips twisting and bucking as the words bottled up behind them struggled to find their way out.
11angelikat
hmmm, maybe The Gunslinger?
15jseger9000
Oh! Or Graveyard Shift? (I'm trying to think of a story where a character was FURIOUS with another character who held power over him...)
16beeg
It's The Shining unless you want to take it back ;)
ya know jseger, since doing these quotes I'm amazed at how many times Uncle Stevie uses the same descriptions and situations. After awhile they *all* start to seem familiar.

17jseger9000
Oh no. The Shining is my official pick. I'll always remember the first line of that book "Jack Torrence thought: Officious little prick."
20CandiBelle
it has to be the shinning. beeg i remember that exact part in the book and thinking the same thing. tons of ppl do that.
21beeg
sorry for the confusion CandiBelle, Jseger won the quote and now we're just talking about our favorite other quotes from The Shinning
Pick a quote Jseger, you're up.

Sorry beeg,
I understood. I just went out to dinner and haven't had the chance to pick a quote. I'm working on it right now...

The day Hillman Brown did the most spectacular trick of his career as an amateur magician- the only spectacular trick of his career as an amateur magician, actually- was Sunday, July 17th, exactly one week before the Haven town hall blew up.
24Swinny
The Tommyknockers?
I never actually read it, even though it's at the top of my list of ones to read, but I know it takes place in Haven, so...

25QueenOfDenmark
It is the Tommyknockers and it's a great book (and a pretty good magic trick too). I hope you enjoy it Swinny.
Sorry jseger for hijacking and confirming but I do love that book and couldn't resist.

26QueenOfDenmark
Love the book so much I posted that comment twice.
27jseger9000
Yeah, it was The Tommyknockers. I was going to blank out the reference to Haven, but thought it messed up the flow of the quote.
The Tommyknockers is one of his books that regularly gets dumped on, even by his fans and I never understood why. That one (along with Desperation and The Regulators) are a couple of my favorites, yet they all get smacked around from time-to-time.
On the other hand, Insomnia is usually praised and I didn't much like that one at all.

28beeg
LOL I love how we all vary on our King books. I never liked The Tommyknockers but I don't remember why? Didn't love Insomnia either, something about those bubble headed Drs. I'm curious to see if I like the books any better at this age.
29Swinny
Nice, glad I was able to get one. As far as The Tommy Knockers goes, like I said I never read it, but I did read Insomnia, and I agree that it wasn't the greatest, I heard great things about it and expected more. It was good, but it wasn't one of his best. Alright, now onto the quote...
He threw her on the bed beside me and I saw that she was dead, and that's when I woke up screaming. With an erection.

You don't want to go? Alright, I can go again than...
Her lips pressed together. Her brow furrowed, as if in concentration. Her hand came up and seemed to grab for the back of my neck, as a person falling from a cliff may grasp blindly at anything to hold on just a little longer. Then it fell away and lay limply on the grass, palm up. She trembled once more-the whole delicate weight of her trembled in my arms-and then she was still.

38jseger9000
I'm not sure why... but I'm thinking... Cell?
39beeg
nah, I think it's The Running man, Swinny is on a Bachman roll :)
42Booksloth
Not Bag of Bones? Or is that too obvious?
43TheBentley
Carrie? From Sue's book?
45Swinny
It is indeed Bag of Bones Booksloth. I thought it was kind of obvious too, but I guess everyone looked passed the obvious, lol. Nice job.
46Booksloth
Yay! I'm amazing! Try this one
"There were no bad dreams that night. ------ and I went out to dinner, drank too much, went to a jazz place where we hadn't been in nearly six years, and listened to that amazing blue-eyed black man, Dexter Gordon, blow his horn until almost two in the morning."

I think that might be the The Green Mile although I couldn't say which installment.

A Winter's Tale: The Breathing Method from Different Seasons

I'm starting to wonder if beeg isn't somehow secretly related to Stephen in some way. HaHa! Just jealous that she seems to get these so easily when the rest of us (me) just look like morons.
58beeg
yeah, he was busy at that time ;)
ok, gonna get a book for the next quote as soon as I finish my tea.

Ok, I've got one.
"Bodice-rippers are one of my secret vices," ------ said, "Better than chocolate because they don't make you fat and the men in them are better than real men because they don't call you at four in the morning, drunk and whining for a second chance."

62jseger9000
That was my first guess too, but it seemed too obvious. Also, it doesn't sound like Annie to me (though I guess it could be another character in a flashback I suppose).
How about The Dark Half?
Shoot! I know there's another book or two where SK mentions that one of his characters are reading one of the Misery Chastain novels. I bet the quote is from there. Unfortunately I'm blanking on which books/characters those are...

63Booksloth
A sort of wild guess but jseger9000 has started some faint bells ringing. Could it be Rose Madder?
64ealaindraoi
Ah, there you go, Booksloth. 'Tis Anna the head of Daughters and Sisters, and jseger was right, it was a Misery Chastain novel that she was referring to. Funny how those novel interweave.
65jseger9000
My spotty memory is a blessing and a curse.
66Booksloth
It was a blessing for me (heh, heh, heh!)
Oooh-er. We're running out of books a bit, aren't we?
Try this'n
"A report card which did not contain all A's was an unacceptable report card. An A - was the subject of a lecture fraught with dire warnings of what life would be like digging ditches or emptying garbage cans, and a B resulted in punishment
- most commonly confinement to his room for a week."

67angelikat
Déjà vu, was this quote already done? And why am I relating it to The Who? WAG The Waste Lands, where Jake was worrying about his essay grade.
68Booksloth
Nope, not The Waste Lands. I don't think it's been up before though I couldn't swear to it. As for The Who? Can't help you there I'm afraid :-(
69QueenOfDenmark
Could it be Christine? Arnie Cunningham's parents were a bit keen for him to keep studying.
#67 angelikat, not sure about The Who but I can't read Dreamcatcher without thinking of The Rolling Stones singing We love you.

70Booksloth
Not Christine either. Good guess though (as they say on quiz shows whenever someone gets it wrong - so, not so good, after all.)
71QueenOfDenmark
That's okay, I was just coming back to change my mind. For some reason the short story Apt Pupil is poking at the back of my mind and whispering "pick me, pick me."
72beckylynn
Jody I was scrolling down so excited to make my guess but you got there before me........I just know that it's Apt Pupil.
74Booksloth
Wow! Amazed so many of you knew it was Apt Pupil! Talk about great minds thinking alike! Congratulations!
Except that it's not Apt Pupil (tee-hee-hee-hee-hee).

76jseger9000
Oh! Is it Word Processor of the Gods? I wouldn't think so only because I remember the parents being pretty dismissive...
77jseger9000
Or It. Could be Stan's parents. This is a quote I remember reading...
How many guesses do I get any way?
How many guesses do I get any way?
79angelikat
Man, I know this quote and I can't think of it - grr. I think it just might be from an early short story.
#69 Jodyreadseverything - I can't listen to Sting's The Dream of the Blue Turtles without thinking of Cycle of the Werewolf.

Not Cycle of the Werewolf either. For me, the one that always sets me singing is The Stand. Blue Oyster Cult of course.
81jseger9000
Or The Ramones song Pet Sematary...
83klarsenmd
Does that mean it is Pet Semetary? I was going to guess The Long Walk.
85jseger9000
Oh, no. Pet Sematary wasn't a guess. Just adding to the convo about Sk and music. Everyone here has heard the Ramones song Pet Sematary, right?
I don't wanna be buried
in the Pet Sematary
I don't want to live my life again...
Right now, I'm outta guesses. Once I get home I will probably have second thoughts.

Hm... The Dead Zone?
87ealaindraoi
The Langoliers from Four Past Midnight. That's the totally A type business guy who is sure everyone else is just plotting to make him late for his meeting.
88Booksloth
Sob, sob - just as things were going so well and I was feeling decidedly evil. You're right ealaindraoi - it is indeed The Langoliers - a story that pops into my mind and makes me look behind every time I take off in a plane.
89jseger9000
Oh! Very good ealaindraoi! I never woulda got to The Langoliers!
90ealaindraoi
Nah, jseger, you would have gotten there, eventually! ;p

That weird old man in Bag of Bones?
100jseger9000
#96 - Oh, I know. I was just goofing around.
103jseger9000
BTW #97 - I keep thinking Insomnia. I know it's not that one (the description is too negative to be the description of our hero), but for some reason it's wedged in my head anyway...
107QueenOfDenmark
Popsy from Nightmares and Dreamscapes?
109ealaindraoi
I think it's that guy from the short story about the house that he keeps adding onto... It grows on you
112TheBentley
Salem's Lot maybe?
119Booksloth
Si it's from a DT book (though, I suspect, not actually Roland at all, 'cos I think you're being a bit crafty there). Could the book be The Drawing of the Three? I'm now thinking maybe a description of the Pusher?
120angelikat
hmm, to me it sounds like a description of Walter, so I will guess that it is from The Gunslinger.
121klarsenmd
How about Randall Flagg. I'm not sure from which book that particular discription is from though.
123jseger9000
I guess that's what I get for not reading the Dark Tower books...
126ealaindraoi
Close to Roland and Randall Flagg....Not a DT and not Insomnia.
Hmmm, maybe The Stand or Eyes of the Dragon?
Hmmm, maybe The Stand or Eyes of the Dragon?
127Swinny
Yeah, it's Eyes of the Dragon, describing King Roland, I do believe. Wish I would have figured that out earlier, lol.
129ealaindraoi
I actually thought Eyes first, but then noticed no one had guessed the Stand, so figured I'd better guess that.
Oh, I'm feeling evil....
It was the most vivid dream he'd had since the age of fourteen, when three or four brilliant wet-dreams had ushered him into physical manhood. It was the most horrible dream ever, hands down, nothing else even close. What made it horrible was the sense of impending doom that ran through it like a red thread. This was true even though the dream had a weird thinness: he knew he was dreaming but could not quite escape it.

Duma Key..........jseger you've got to read the Dark Tower series they're epic!! There's also so many relations in other books (obviously).
131jseger9000
#130 - jseger you've got to read the Dark Tower series they're epic!!
'Epic' is the problem. I'm not a fan of 'dark fantasy' type stuff. I read the first two Dark Tower books and they just didn't thrill me. That's also why I'm not a fan of The Stand or most of Clive Barker's novels (though his Books of Blood stories were brilliant).
As to the quote, could it be It?

The Shining?
I did read all the Dark Tower books, and I while I acknowledge they're quite an accomplishment, I'm not as crazy about them as everybody else. Since I've read them, it's hard to say, really, if they "cleared a lot up" from the other books. My sense is that if you read It, Insomnia, Hearts in Atlantis, and The Stand--and maybe Eyes of the Dragon, you've really got all you need to understand the "allusions" to the Dark Tower in the other books. For me, I don't think it's the dark fantasy that I don't care for. (I like Neil Gaiman when he's on his game, for instance.) I think it's the John Ford Western in them that bores me--lots of the rugged cowboy wandering alone on the prairie. Even though I usually enjoyed the books when I got into them, there always came a moment when I thought, sort of giddily, this movie's credits end with the words, "And Clint Eastwood as Frodo."

Not Duma Key, not It, not the Shinning.
I agree Bentley. I think I'd read a cereal box before a Louis L'Amour novel - so the whole lonesome prairie thing is lost on me. I read the DT books (actually I held off for a long time, I read 5,6 & 7 last year) but I didn't really love them.
The "Clint Eastwood as Frodo" comment will now make me chuckle inside every time I think of DT!

Okay, the evilness of this seems to have stumped everybody and I will be home tomorrow so I am going to answer.
It's Stationary Bike from Just After Sunset and I just bought it the day I read the quote on LT, then reached the story in the book about an hour later so it was fresh in my mind.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say I was right.

Ah, but Stationary Bike was in a collection that was released a few years ago. It is in Just After Sunset also, but it's been available for a while.

I've got my copy and it's been on the rack for almost a week.....so I'm pretty sure it's usable.
Also, there are some of you guys who need a little 'freshness' in the game, some of you blow my mind how fast you can guess a quote. Okay that's my two cents.

147Booksloth
And I'm guessing definitely not Misery (did I win?). It sounds to me like one of those wife/girlfriend characters that make me think he based it on Tabitha - though maybe in a bad patch. How about Pet Sematary?
148QueenOfDenmark
Well, Booksloth is right, it isn't Misery, but it isn't Pet Sematary either.
149Booksloth
So I won! I did win, didn't I? Or are you telling me guesses about what it isn't don't count?
151jseger9000
That quote sure is familiar. I'm guessing The Stand, though I couldn't say who it was or why...
152QueenOfDenmark
No, it isn't The Stand either.
Booksloth you definately won the guessing which book it isn't part of the game.

I guess it ISN'T Carrie!
I guess it might be Duma Key. Because Edgar and his ex-wife had that kind of relationship.

158TheBentley
I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and say Insomnia, mostly because I don't think these people are married--at least not to each other. At best, he's talking to his ex-wife.
159angelikat
Oh, could it be Lunch at the Gotham Café from Everything's Eventual??
162QueenOfDenmark
nope.
164QueenOfDenmark
Not Thinner either, sorry.

I am going to have to fall back on my favorite guess and say 'Salems Lot - but I won't guess that it is one of the Dark Tower books.

168QueenOfDenmark
It is Tommyknockers so well done jseger.

176pinkcbpoet
Isnt that the Stand?
178jseger9000
Sorry. It's 'Salem's Lot, when Father Callahan is drinking and looking out his window. I should have saved a quote from such an obvious source, but what are you gonna do?

188jseger9000
If there's none when I get home, I'll dig one up.

Okay I'm dying here. Hope no one minds that I'm taking the plunge.
"Plus, dreams don't have to be logical, do they? Dreams are poems from the subconscious."
Good luck hope I'm not making anyone mad.

I'm so sorry! I forgot it was me and I got busy with Turkey Day stuff! It's cool, let's go with beckylynn's. (thank you!)
I'll guess Bag of Bones - lots of weird dreams in that.

I'll go for Pet Sematary though I don't really know why.
192QueenOfDenmark
Thinner? I think the guy in that had dreams but I am also not sure why, it's been a long time since I read it.
193beckylynn
Nope, sorry guys none of the above.
Yeah, I was having withdraws glad to see I'm not the only one! Happy Turkey Day

Is it today? Happy Thanksgiving all our American friends - I hope you're being duly thankful for LT ;-)
195ealaindraoi
(adding LT and Bookmooch to list of things thankful for....!)
Thank you UK friends for your well-wishing, without you we wouldn't have a Thanksgiving! ;)
Lisey's Story?

If beeg is right (and let's face it, she is) and it isn't from a King book... I'll guess Storm of the Century? I doubt it. It doesn't sound like it comes from there. But it wasn't a King book and dreams played an important part (or I'm remembering wrong).
Sorry I didn't post like promised. Turkey Day sort of eats up everything else.

#197 Don't worry, you weren't the only one - LT was like the grave yesterday. I hope you all had a great time and are suffering for it today
#195 Nice of you to say so and thanks for the thanks but I don't think it was actually anyone on LT :)

The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer? That's the only thing I can think of that would fit the hint unless it's an introduction to something...
200beeg
Ridley Pearson wrote The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer under the pseudonyms of Joyce Reardon.

'kay, I may not be very bright but at least I'm willing to admit it. Do you mean by that 'not a SK book' that it's in an anthology? I was already confused; it's not fair to mess with my poor little brain even more,
204beckylynn
I'm there with ya Booksloth, I'm a little confused to. The quote is defintley from a Stephen King Book...and no one has guessed it yet.
205beeg
yeah ok, see I have it from a book of short stories, and later realized it's from his new book I don't have yet.
so there I'm guessing it without really saying it outloud

I went out. When I came back this seemed to have turned into a game where we all guess what it is but don't tell anyone. Just for the record, I know it too. Is it my go now?
209ealaindraoi
Yeah, I know it now too.
I see beeg's dilemma - she gets ALL the quotes but doesn't want to guess because she doesn't want to have to put up a quote. Maybe we should all provide you with 2 or 3 quotes and then when you win you can just put up one of them? ;)

LOL I was trying to explain my earlier post that confused you. See what happens.
Ok the story is called "Harvey’s Dream" it's in The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror Seventeenth Annual Collection. Only later I figured it's been re-released in Just after Sunset. Sorry for the confusion and my not so helpful hints.
go ahead Booksloth, it's your go.

Nice offer but you don't get out of it that easily. I'm one of the few people in the world who hasn't yet got Sunset and I didn't have the slightest idea what it was. Hoist by your own petard Beeg - your go!
212beeg
I don't have Sunset either, it's on the list of course, but not up there as I already have most of the stories in other books.
here's a quote:
She looked up at him, her eyes wide and wild. "Misunderstanding?" She indicate the dried bib of blood on the front of her dress "does this look like a misunderstanding?"

I know this quote. It's right on the tip of my tongue, and yet my brain WILL NOT retrieve it. AARRGGG!
216klarsenmd
Well beeg, have you stumped us all or did I miss something? My guess, although I know I should know this, is Cell.
