New month, new thread!
I've started reading Maisie Dobbs and Antsy Does Time -- I like both so far, for completely different reasons! I've also started listening to Half-Blood Prince in the car; I expect that will take most of August to finish.

I'm about halfway through The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder and I plan to start my 3-in-1 copy of His Dark Materials this weekend.
3LadyN
Just starting Company of Liars. I do like my historical fiction...
4picolina
I finished The Sorceress and plan on starting to read Amos Daragon the second book. It's a french series about a boy who's chosen to be the first mask wearer. These mask wearers wear certain masks that give them powers and they protect other people from creatures from myths, like Medusa and such.
5VetaTorres
I'm currently reading The Serpent's Tale and now I'm starting The Poe Shadow
6catbastet
I have started Gods of Manhattan, and I'm really liking it so far!
7cmbohn
I am like 7 pages away from the end of Heart of Darkness, so I will finish that one today. I took it along to my daughter's appointment today, but didn't have quite long enough to finish. I also started Volume 2 of Don Quixote. Very intellectual around here. XD
8compskibook
I decided to skip The Demigod Files and I just started The Last Olympian. I want to get this one read and one other before I dive into my Meet-Up recommendations.
9littlegeek
I'm almost done with Stone's Fall and I'm really enjoying it. Not sure what I'll read next.
10mindylou182
I'm really starting to enjoy Rant. It's a little strange, but it is definately entertaining me. However, I left it at Missy's house. It's an hour away. So I won't be reading it for a couple days.
11jugglingpaynes
Rereading HBP and catbastet brought me the sequel to The Gods of Manhattan, Spirits in the Park. Now if I can just finish my project so I can sit down and read!
12pollysmith
I just finished a reread of DH and for some reason, I was riveted! Maybe because I knew what happened and I was reading for depth this time around.
I'm also reading a book by Elizabeth Peters which I have misplaced and need to find!

I'm still rereading HBP. I haven't been carrying it around in my bag (for obvious reasons - what a weighty book ;) so it's taking a while.
My mother bought and read Wesley's Owl this week. She agrees with JP that it's very good. She's handed her copy to my grandmother and I'm up to read it next.

I am going to start The Art of Deception but I am not sure about it yet. I also want to do another reread of something because with starting a new job I feel like a comfort read. I am not sure what I am going to reread though... either Harry or Edward.
15Espeon200
I decided to start off August with a John Greenathon. I read through An Abundance of Katherines and ten went straight into Paper Towns. I'm debating whether I want to do Looking for Alaska again right now or not.
16littlegeek
After "auditioning" various works, I seem to have settled into Phineas Redux. I love Phinny, he's such a tool.
17lefty33
I finished Neverending Story, which was wonderful. I have no idea what I'm going to pick up next.
19literarymiss
I just started Silence in the Sanctuary by Deanna Rayborun...gotta love a mystery!
21suge
Hey everyone!
I'm reading and LOVING Swoon. I originally bought it on Friday and took it to a beach party on Saturday, where SOMEONE STOLE IT!!! So I bought it again today. They could have taken my money or my credit card, but they had to hit me below the belt and take my book.... I love giving away books. I would have been happy to share a book that I loved with someone else. it gives me so much joy to help spread the word about a new favorite. How do they sleep at night??
I'm also reading Lord of Misrule. No one stole that, thankfully so I had something to read on the way home. See? all those people (my mother) who wonder why I must carry more than one book at a time? THAT'S WHY!!

I received my ER, Sworn to Silence yesterday. I'm about 200 pages in, and I should finish it tonight.
24mindylou182
I hate people sometimes.
Last night I felt the urge to read a little more of A Wrinkle in Time. It's a strange book and I'm trying to decide if I really like it. It has me interested. But it's just very different.

Suge, that stinks. :(
I started The Thief of Always before bed last night. I only read three chapters and I like it. Someone on here had said they liked it but I don't remember who. It was a while ago.

#1 Oh Foggi I am glad you like Maisie Dobbs!
#13 K let me know what you think I have almost purchased Wesley the Owl several times.
#17 Lefty was that a reread or a first read? I would love to repeat my first read of The Neverending Story
I am reading Some Experiences of an Irish R.M. hilarious and The sea of Monsters see I said I would get sucked into the series.

I' m continuning my reread of His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass. I hope to finish all 3 books, as well as a reread of Breaking Dawn (it's been 1 year since we last heard the adventures of Edward and Bella) before I go back to school. If not, they might go back to school with me.
ETA for touchstones.

Maren, this was the first time I've ever read Neverending Story. Somehow I missed it when I was younger though I remember seeing the movies. Enjoy Sea of Monsters!
29suge
Yep, some people are evil.
Finished Swoon and it was really, really weird. But I enjoyed reading it.
I'm still trying to finish Lord of misrule
No idea what I'll pick up next. sigh.

28. Lefty I missed it too. I only read it a few years ago and it was a delight! I actually have never seen the movie either. I should remedy that. I am glad you enjoyed it and I am enjoying Sea of Monsters

I finished my HBP reread this morning and I finished The Last Olympian this evening. What a great series!
I am going to start rereading A Walk in the Woods which is one of the funniest books I have ever read. I am also going to tackle World Without End. It is just so huge, but I will never be able to do it once school starts. Luckily school doesn't start here for another five weeks. I hope it doesn't take that long!

I love Bill Bryson, he spoke at my college and it was one the best author visits I went to!
I finished my ER yesterday, I'll have a review up later this morning and went back to Jurassic Park. I'm hoping to finish up Bleak House at work today and the Chrichton tonight.
If anyone's interested, Here's my review of Sworn to Silence

I finished Maisie Dobbs and will be reading the next book in the series soon!
Right now, I've started My Most Excellent Year: A Novel of Love, Mary Poppins, and Fenway Park. I had a hard time convincing myself to put it down and go to sleep last night. It's not that the plot is particularly gripping, but I really love the characters and can't wait to see what they do next.

#33: Great review, bib! That's one book less I will consider reading in the future! :D
I finished Shibumi which was really good, not my favorite, but all in all very entertaining. And I am now reading The Field Guide: The first book of the Spiderwick chronicles, it's really short so I'll finish it today, and then I'm reading The sea of monsters because a friend will bring me the demigod files in like ten days so I can finally read the whole percy jackson series :D.

34 Foggi: I loved My Most Excellent Year! I went to an author signing last year with Steve Kluger. He is hilarious. Tell me when you are done and I will tell you which part is actually based from his life. If you end up liking it, get his Last Days of Summer. One of my all time favorites.
37cmbohn
I just finished the 3rd one in the Erec Rex series, Erec Rex: The Search for Truth. I really enjoyed it, and the more I think about it, the more I like it, but I still think that the second one was my favorite. It was so unlike anything I was expecting. Really excellent.
38foggidawn
I've moved on to Vampire Academy, which I'm liking much better than the House of Night series so far. I'm about halfway through the book, so we'll see if it continues strong.
39biblioholic29
I've finished a bunch of books the last couple days, so I'm now working on On the Couch which I should finish pretty quickly, Ancient Greeks for Dummies, I love the for dummies books on the humanities, they're so easy to read and I actually retain some of the information, and I think I'll try to start on A Tale of Two Cities today.
40kirbyowns
This week I have read Why Gender Matters, Strategies for Teaching Boys & Girls Elementary level, and finished up SS this morning.

I read Dying to be Thin, but it wasn't that great. Picked up Don Quixote again. I have GOT to finish this thing, and it's taking forever!
43pollysmith
I'm reading a book called "Dead Witch Walking" by Kim Harrison. Its been pretty good so far.
44PollyAnnaHP
Suge, sorry to hear about your book! The nerve of some people!
Mindylou has you seen the movie version of Wrinkle of Time? It was rather odd also (I've never read the book)
#40 Kirby what did you think of theat book? I'm pretty sure I have it on my Amazon wish list.
I am almost finished with Great Expectations and am planning to start Founding Mothers when that is finished.
I also have to find time to read a member give away book I recieved electronically, but I keep forgetting that I have it dowloaded and I hate reading long passages from the computer screen....

46MellieT
Tom bought my City of Bones last night. I am thinking of doing housework before I start it.
47mindylou182
#44 Polly, I didn't even know it was a movie. It was an impulse buy one day at Meijer.
I'm getting really close to finishing Rant. It's gotten good, but it's still a little strange.

Foggi, I love the Vampire Academy series. Wait till you read book three!! (btw that's the same thing the sales girl at Borders told me when I bought mine LOL)
#44--> Thanks Polly, I still see red when I remember my poor purloined book.
I'm reading The Declaration and REALLY enjoying it. I love YA Sci-Fi.
I'm pretty happy with most of my reads so far this year. I haven't had to abandon anything. I'm in a winning reading streak. You guys keep me protected from crappy books, so I thank you all.

I'm on an Eva Ibbotson kick -- I bought several of her historical romances for Mom, and I'm trying to get them all read this week so I can leave them here for her. I read The Reluctant Heiress and A Company of Swans on the plane -- both good, but not as good as A Countess Below Stairs, which I absolutely adored.
6006nwingert
#59 foggi:
Since you're on a Eva Ibbotson kick, have you read The Secret of Platform 13? It's got a Harry Potter-feel to it, a juvenille fantasy involving witches, wizards, and secret worlds.

62catbastet
I have been busy. Yesterday I read House of Many Ways while reading Spirits in the Park (which I finished today). Right now, I am reading Bloodhound and The Magic Mirror of M.C. Escher. Everything has been good.
63grkmwk
Since our son was born, I've been re-reading HP and am currently on HBP. As I've yet to see the movie, I'm planning to finish before doing so...hopefully next week. I am also reading two books for parents: Blue Like Play Dough: The Shape of Motherhood in the Grip of God and Afterbirth: Stories You Won't Read in a Parenting Magazine. Both are good so far, and are giving me wonderfully humorous, down-to-earth insights on the reality of being a mom (i.e., I will make mistakes, and in all likelihood, my kid will turn out just fine).
64jugglingpaynes
You mean other moms make mistakes too? :o)
grk, someday we'll have to sit down together and I'll tell you how I thought I had ruined catbastet for reading. (Hooked on Phonics didn't work for her!)

JP, interesting. All 6 of us did well with the Phonics thing. Obviously the reading thing worked out anyway. :)
I read something on the way to NY and I can't think for my life what it was. I'll go check my bag later. I finished Time Traveler's Wife on the way back, which I got at a bookstore set up on the corner of Central Park on Compski's recommendation (when she was here) and Suge's (when I was there). I am currently reading The Ruby Key.

I just finished City of Glass and I have to admit that this series might become one of my favorites. Wonderful book. I began and finished City of Ashes last night. It is very well written and kept me guessing I loved it! I think I am going to go back to some old friends now though and reread the Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell.
67biblioholic29
Finished my ER yesterday and posted my review. Then I started The Time Traveler's Wife last night. I read until I realized I may as well go to bed as I wasn't going to finish it before passing out, but I can't wait to get back home to it.
68jugglingpaynes
Lefty, we finished the second Gods of Manhattan: Spirits in the Park. You must read it, as you have now visited some of the places mentioned!
Well, read the first book, then read it. Otherwise you will have no idea what's going on. :o)
Oh, and caveat: The second book ends with a cliffhanger. I think I'm waiting for about three or four sequels to books I read that ended on a cliffhanger.

jp - sometime i'd love to hear any stories/wisdom you care to share re: parenting! i'm trying not to hold myself to ridiculously high standards right now, but i know that'll be a constant challenge down the road. for now, though, a good day is one in which i manage to shower, not eat standing up, and only change shirts once!!
72lefty33
Oh, I left out my opinion. I did very much enjoy Time Traveler's Wife. It was a beautiful story. I am sure I will reread it soon.
Bib, I was doing the same thing reading it -- checking the number of pages left compared to my level of exhaustion. I did have to take a break to sleep but finished it in the morning.
JP, thanks for reminding me! I kept chanting the name of the series to myself on the way home so I wouldn't forget.

Bella, I read the Vampire Kisses books more out of habit and to know what happens next, but I don't really like the series. by the time I got to Royal Blood the latest installment, I was like "what is the point?"
I'm reading The Graveyard book, and just finished Revelations from the Blue Bloods series. I was surprised to actually enjoy it. This was becoming another series that I follow just out of habit.

*sigh* I picked up one of Mom's romance novels to read while I'm here, and found that I've gotten much pickier about good writing than I used to be. I used to read romance novels when nothing else was around, and now the writing style (or lack thereof!) bothers me so that I can't get in to the story. Oh, well . . . I'm saving The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie for the airplane ride tomorrow, and the little bit that I read of that was promising.
88biblioholic29
I've come to that realization recently as well. In fact, I just got rid of all my Catherine Coulter FBI novels a couple weeks ago after picking one up and realizing I just couldn't handle dialogue like; "Maybe Mrs. Smith will share the bottle of 20-year-old Scotch whiskey."
Scotch whiskey? Seriously?! Who says that?

On a semi-related note, I learned yesterday that one of my cousins who has been an HP hold-out for *years* (I think I first tried to get her to read them in 1999...) finally picked up the first one this summer, only to be instantly hooked! She just completed the series!! Yay for new converts ;o)

Suge: I noticed after I finished the 3rd on last night that it seems to be tesame story line and there aren't many surprises. But I do have to say that I am kinda liking the characters, I think mostly because I was once the ostrasized goth girl in Dullsville lol.

#90--> HIP HIP HIP HOOZAH!!
Bella, Yes, I like the characters too. I think this is a cute series. Raven is cool, she is spunky and I would probably hang out with her in RL. I'm also half in love with Alexander. But, when I'm done reading, I get the feeling that nothing has happened in 200 odd pages. sigh. I pin it down to bad writing... Bad prose... I don't know. Like I said its a "cute" series. Ah, I'll be reading the next book anyhow. LOL

I read The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie on the way home, and thought it was good. I'll probably read more in the series if I remember to look for them. I liked all of the literary references, but didn't find Flavia a particularly believable 11-year-old. I guess that wasn't the point, really; she's not intended to be typical . . . but there is a difference between typical and believable, and she wasn't either.
I also read Dead Until Dark, which was fun fluff. I'm not sure if I will go on with that series or not (vampire stories not really being my thing), but at least I can say I've read it.
I finished up the audiobook of HBP on the drive home from the airport -- I have a bit of a wait for Deathly Hallows, alas, as all copies at my library are currently "lost" (of course I have them on order, but it may take a while for the new copies to make their way to me, as I believe there are other requests before mine on the list).

I finished a book yesterday that will shock many people. I'm not saying what it is. If you really want to know you can try to find my 75 book challenge thread. It's all part of my new self-challenge to read top 100 lists.

102 Bib: I checked! I am so proud of you! Now you can watch (and love) the miniseries with Suge, Mandy, and I!
104biblioholic29
I still don't think I want to watch that. I like the other version fine. It seems like the miniseries takes as long to watch as it does to read it.

suge - Are you playing the latest Prince of Persia game? So fun! My husband and I are hooked on Resident Evil 5 - we've already won it on easy but now we're trying to master the whole thing!
Oh wait...we're talking about books.... ;) I finished Life the Universe and Everything but I'm taking a break from Adams and tackling Vanity Fair. Pretty decent so far!

I read The Hunger Games last night. It was good; I can see why so many people like it. I have an ARC of the sequel, but I'm told it ends on a cliffhanger, so I'm trying to decide whether to read it or not. In the meantime, I have Julie and Julia to work on.
109biblioholic29
#107: I really liked Vanity Fair when I read it last year.
I just finished Persuasion which puts me at 60 books for the year. Based on my current rate of reading, I may be done with my 75 books by the time I come back from vacation 9/9!

Nah, I re-playing "Revelations" on my PSP. Its old but I never beat it and I'm determined to do so now. Lets see... I would kill for Fatal Frame 4 tho! LOL. I might even learn Japenese just so I can play it.
I didn't know other people liked The Hunger Games, Foggi! It was recommended to me by the coolest book seller in the world. You have the sequel??!! And you didn't devour it? How can you stand it??? Even with the cliff hanger I couldn't bear it. I am too in love with Gale. Too in love.....

#111 -- I keep meaning to read that before I see the movie. Don't know if I'll go see the movie in theaters or just wait until it comes out on DVD, though.
#110 -- I broke down and started reading Catching Fire (sequel to The Hunger Games) today. And yes, I've heard a lot of buzz about The Hunger Games, on LT and in library circles. There's a discussion thread over on the "Read YA Lit" group, if you want to talk about it.

I just started a reread of The Time Traveler's Wife this morning! After seeing the movie I just had to read it again. I am only letting myself read two chapters a day until I finish World Without End.
I was planning to make Deathly Hallows my next reread, but I don't want to rush it. I might not do my HP reread again for a year and a half depending on if I do it for the first movie or the second.

I finished DH, and subsequently my first reread of the HP series without a break, last night, and once again I cried at the end. Now, I could chalk the crying up to new mommy hormones and lack of sleep, but that wouldn't be fair, as I've cried all three times when I finished DH. It still makes me very sad to know that the series is finished.
Not sure what will be next, although I'm contemplating a reread of The Time Traveler's Wife in the hope that I'll get to see the movie in the theater. However, I'm more in the mood for a good murder mystery, so I might go that direction instead...

I've finished 3 books in the last 24 hours, so I'll be picking up some new stuff today. Probably A Year of Cats and Dogs, I need to review it.

114: Lefty, I liked the movie a lot, but I hadn't read the book in over two years. I don't recommend rereading the book before seeing it, but it may help to do a first time read before seeing it. The whole "wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey" thing can be confusing.
118jugglingpaynes
#117: And now my interest has been piqued to read it. *sigh* So many books, so little time...
119catbastet
I read The Thirteenth Child, which lovely foggi sent to me. It was so good! I also finished The Magic Mirror of M.C. Escher which was also really good and interesting.
120lefty33
Thanks, Compski. I'm looking forward to seeing it but just read the book for the first time a little over a week ago or so. Perhaps I'll wait a little longer to see the movie.
JP, I do recommend it. It was a good read. Very interesting concept!

I just finished The Magicians and I loved it. It's got copious amounts of both awesome fantasy and sex/drugs/existential angst, very ingeniously mixed together. It seems like an HP ripoff at first, but it's definitely NOT.
I have no idea what to read now.

Just finished The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks. The concept was interesting, but the narrative was getting on my nerves at times. I tend to resent it when the narrator asks if I remembered about such and such that she mentioned earlier. Just tell me what you want to tell me!

Read A Year of Cats and Dogs yesterday. It's one of the books from the publisher of The History of Now. I'll post a link to my review once I've written it, I usually take a day or two to mull it over but I'll say that it was very good and I'd particularly recommend it to: Mandy (I'll lend it to you), K, JP, foggi, compski, Lefty, suge, LadyN, and perhaps mar (that's all the petlovers I remember right now).
I'm currently reading Mythology for Dummies.

Good review, Bib. I've always thought you were good at reviewing a book without giving away spoilers.
I am currently reading The Hiding Place and I've continued with Phantom of the Opera again. I had put Phantom aside for a while.

#123 - LG, I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed The Magicians, as it's on my TBR wishlist.
I decided to give into the mystery craving and started The Oxford Murders on Saturday. So far it's good, although some of the mathematics/logic principles are a bit heady for me to fully grasp without a second reading of the section. Not sure if this is due to the fact that this is a translation, or that I'm sleep deprived, or that the principles are just that difficult! Nevertheless, I'm intrigued and will keep going, as I want to know what happens...

I've been so busy that I only just finished rereading HBP a few days ago. I'm reading books for classes like An Invitation to Health, Give Me Liberty - An American History, Elemental Geosystems, Dire Predictions - Understanding Global Warming, and a heavy math text. I'm trying to get ahead in all my classes so I'm not yet sure when I can pick up a book-book next.

Reading Archaeology for Dummies.
151foggidawn
I finished Julie and Julia, which I would have liked if it was about cooking, but the cooking almost felt like a side issue or gimmick. It was more about Julie's search for the meaning of life: her friends' sex lives, her concerns about not being able to have a baby, her dislike of the Republican party in general and the ones she works for in particular. . . . She comes across as incredibly narcissistic and whiny, too. This is definitely a case where I like the movie better than the book.
I also read The Amaranth Enchantment, which was okay but not great.
Now I'm reading City of Bones. I like it so far -- there's some great humor in it.

I've gotten through 500 of the 1000 pages of World Without End and I just don't want to pick it up anymore. I liked the prequel Pillars of the Earth, but I just can't seem to get into this one. A contributing factor is that I am very busy at school helping get the new computers ready for the new year.

Vanity Fair was weighing me down too much (I like it, but the writing style is a little irksome to me. I get really pulled out of the story when the author talks directly to the readers.) I will go back and finish it, but I need something more engaging for now so I started Outlander and I am *totally* loving it! :)

I also have a couple books lent to me by a friend that are urgently jumping up Mount TBR so I could always pause Outlander and read those if you're not quite ready to get back to it. Sorrysorrysorry!!!

I finished my reread of The Time Traveler's Wife this afternoon. It was a 2 Kleenexer, even as a reread. Loved it! Next I am going to reread Deathly Hallows. This will be my last reread until after the movie. I am still trying to figure it out if I will reread it after part 1 or wait almost two years and reread it after part 2.
I very rarely give up on books, but after reading 500 of the 1000 pages of World Without End I have returned it to the library. I just don't have the time to really get into it. I liked the prequel Pillars of the Earth, but I read a lot of that when I had the puppy and was stuck in the backyard with nothing else to do. Maybe I will try again next summer.

#177--> Pah! You ALREADY have a Jamie!!! Think of us perpetually single girls who can't date anyone because they don't measure up to our literary heroes. Can't there be a guy out there who is over 6'2' who is a little Fitzwilliam Darcy/Jamie Fraser/Edward Cullen/Mr Rochester/etc...... sight. I DON'T ASK FOR MUCH!!!!

I also am reading The Little Ottleys which is actually three novels by the woman Oscar Wilde called "the wittiest woman I know" it is splendid, funny in a Wildean sort of way.
I have also read 2 biographies of Isadora Duncan and some Russian poetry as dramaturgical research.
