The 1010 Challenge Category Compiler

I've been thinking about my categories lately - well, since this group went up actually. I'm keeping eight from my 999 so I need two more. I had three I was considering but chose to do one for short stories and drop the other two. So I still need one more category.

I seem to recall that the 999 Challenge had a category list thread and even though I'm reading each new thread that goes up here with a bit of addiction, seeing lots of categories in one place would help me mull them over.

So here is the category thread. As you firm up your categories, please list them here. If the names aren't self-explanatory, please include your descriptions.

Since I'm starting the thread, I'll even volunteer to do most common categories total towards the year's end. I remember one on the 999 category thread and it was an interesting statistics bit.

>8 lsh63: jonesli - Have you read Chasing Shadows Across the World? It is a motorcycle travelog written by two actors, Ewan McGregor and Charles something-that-begins-with-B. I don't read a lot of non-fiction, but this one really intrigued me. They rode their motorcycles all the way around the world.

Here are mine, so far...

1. Because I Said So - Books my Mom recommends
2. And You'll Never Guess What Happened Next - Series books
3. Miss Austen and Her Relations - Books by Jane, about Jane, sequels to her books, etc...

The only repeat categories are the classics, and the children/YA lit. It's only the middle of August, so we'll see what pans out in the next few months. I have lots of ideas for categories and this thread is both helping and not helping. Well, isn't LT the same way, actually? I'm desperate to read more of the books I own and yet my rec list from here is pages and pages long!

About the detailed list:

Some categories could go in more than one place, so I put them in each place. The purpose, I figured, was to be able to see who is reading like books as you, as well as what categories/types of categories are common. Some of the categories with just a single person in them are ones I think will have multiple people as more people join.

If you think I've put one of your categories in the wrong place, let me know.

If you can think of a better title for some of the clunkier ones or better organization structure for some of the broad categories, let me know. I am open to ideas.

You Did a Great Job,Chrine!

Here's my suggestions,

Couldn't First books by an author, First time reading an author, Jane Austin & Co., Favorite Authors and Books by a specific author all be categorized as "Author specific Categories"?

And how about Biographies, Autobiographies, & Memoirs and
History, non-fiction and Non-ficition
being put together as historical Non-ficition? Isn't all non-fiction really history in some form or other? And biographies are simply the history of one person.

My "Honest Abe" Category is for the US Presidents Challenge.
My Craft & Hobby category is Cozy Mysteries with a theme.
I have 2 catch-all categories - Surprise and found on LT/INTERENET. etc.

But again, great job!

Aug 22, 2009, 1:16 am

Thanks Cyderry & Bookoholic.

Cyderry, I've moved your categories to the correct places.

Books by a specific author is someone reading all books in that category by one author.

Jane Austen got separated out of that because several people are reading her books, fiction using her characters, and related books. I expect more will turn up as 2010 approaches.

First time reading an author is someone trying an author they've never read before.

First books by an author is someone reading the first book written by an author for 10 authors.

I know I didn't do the best job making the names of categories clear but I tried. I suspect categories will evolve as I add people's in.

Thanks, chrine. There are a lot of ideas there.

I am not planning any major changes to the types of category (just more tweaks to the order and number of books I read on each subject). I think doing the stepped version is a constant - a minimum target to aim for. That leaves plenty of room for books outside the challenge and the opportunity to grow within the challenge itself.

chrine, thanks for all your hard work compiling! I'll enjoy watching as more categories/people get added.

I haven't decided yet how many books I'll attempt in each category but here they are (mostly likely NOT changing, even though it's early):

1. "Library" books - stories involving libraries, librarians, etc.
2. Keep it Short - short story collections
3. Elves, Dragons, and Princes, oh my! - fantasy
4. Too Young for Me? - children's and YA
5. Out of the Box Fiction - genreblending
6. But they MADE me read it - LT/RL Recommendations, LTER, etc.
7. Dewey Decimal Challenge - nonfiction for any Dewey number I haven't yet read this year
8. Author Revisits - books I haven't read by authors I have
9. 8-9-10 - books published in 2008, 2009, or 2010
10. The Everything Drawer - overflow, whims, and just about anything else that doesn't otherwise fit

Edited a description for clarity

Wonderful summaries, chrine. What a lot of work that must have been. I like that you took the time to list personal categories into more than one classification - these things are never clear cut and I appreciate that you didn't try to make it so.

39calm
Aug 22, 2009, 4:29 pm

I appreciate it even more as I "interwove" my categories to allow for how I read now- while still stretching enough for it to be a challenge (and fun!)

It is also good to know where interests intersect (poor ever expanding wishlist! and TBR pile!)

40chrine
Edited: Aug 22, 2009, 6:47 pm

You're welcome ya'll! It's personally interesting to me to see, plus I like stats and lists and whatnot. I figured since I had made it already, I might as well share it.

I should say that I've only used categories by people who have posted theirs in this thread, but I plan to go look at the thread and collect the rest (so long as they look fairly definite) while the group is still small. Then I can add the couple of people who join each week as we go. I will keep updating the list above for now. After so much time or so many new people joining the challenge, I will make a new posting. And while I'm currently reading all the threads in this group and will make changes as I see them, if you change or add a category could you please post in here so I can change it on the list. Thanks for all the data so I can geekly compile!

So, on to a personal matter, I've been thinking about my challenge and I'm not sure what to do. I will not read 100 books in one year, I will not read 81 books this year. But I don't want to do a step challenge. This year, so far, I have read much more in some categories than others. But I also don't want to have low minimums of 3 or 4 per category. I thought about 10 categories and capping them as completed once they reach 10 books but just allowing myself to read a set number of books for the challenge (30, 40, 50, perhaps raising it as I go) in whatever categories they may fall in. I've also thought about just setting it up like I'm planning on reading 100 and not finishing it, which doesn't both me since I like the organization, having a goal, and chatting among the group. But I am also releasing it to all the creative minds here to see if anyone has any other ideas.

edited b/c I was missing a period!

I've also thought about just setting it up like I'm planning on reading 100 and not finishing it, which doesn't both me since I like the organization, having a goal, and chatting among the group.

This is what I'm planning to do. Not creative, but it works :)

42arubabookwoman
Aug 22, 2009, 10:47 pm

I haven't posted my categories yet, and I'm not sure I will be able to read 100 books either. So I'm going to go for 10 books in 10 categories, and it won't bother me if I don't make it. I'll just try to read books in every category, and as many books as possible. I'm also planning to make my categories fairly broad, so I don't feel constrained or get bored with what I'm reading. (In other words, I'll be able to fit any book I read into one of my categories. :)).

And thanks chrine--this was a lot of work.

@40 :: You could always just pick a random number of books per category, say 6 or 7. That would leave you with 60 or 70 books in 2010, which would be more manageable than 100. Or, just read as many (or as few) as you want and call it a day. It's your challenge, after all! :)

I am not going to complete all my 999 books this year either, so I have to some extent revamped my 2010 challenge to become 2 step challenges. All my selected books over the 55 required by the 10-9-8- ... step challenge will become bonus books. I will start my 1st step challenge headed down my list and iffnwhen I complete that, I will start a 2nd step challenge, headed bottom to top. I almost certainly won't finish the 2nd set, but it will be worth a try. Any books, this year and next, that I don't get to will be rolled forward into future years since they will now be TBRs. Nice, tidy and obsessive. Another option might be dice - Roll for category then roll for book.

#40 - These are my categories for the challenge. Most of them are listed in your compilation, but some may not be. I'm impressed with all the different categories we have chosen!

"The Way We Were" (biography/autobiography)
"Teach Your Children Well" (children's/YA books)
"Jesus, Take the Wheel" (Christian fiction)
"Honolulu City Lights" (set in cities)
"My Favorite Things" (classics or short stories)
"Eve of Destruction" (disasters)
"Lost in the Fifties Tonight" (written in the '50's or written over 50 years ago)
"1,2,3, Red Light" (number or color in title)
"I've Been Waiting for a Girl Like You" (TBR list too long!)
"Happy Together" (whatever I want to read)

This year I started with a list of categories, and have added to them as it seemed fitting. Next year I think I'll just start reading.I'll create categories as my reading starts to form patterns, and split the categories that overfill.

I'll try for 10 of 10 in both fiction and non-fiction.

I made a main category list, but looking through this thread makes me want to possibly change or add to it.
What great ideas people have - I am sticking with the boring basic for now but that is not to say it won't change drastically by the middle of 2010. Thanks for all the wonderful ideas everyone and for the listing by chrine (messages 22 & 23) Wow that's a job - thanks!

1. Owned but unread
2. Re-reads
3. Library Books
4. Early Review / Reviewer group

@#44 That sounds very complicated. Complicated is good :) I have a good friend who often says: "Why do it the easy way when it's usually much easier to just stomp down the hard way?".

I'm also pondering on how to find a middle road between 100 books (which I surely won't do) and the stepped 55 that seem a little on the low side. At the moment I'm pondering a bonus category of "Further reading", books inspired by books read within the challenge, that will consist of twelve books. One book extra a month, so to speak. A total of 67 is a bit of a challenge for me, but a possible one.

I'm currently lending towards setting it up like I'm going to read 100 and filling it in as I go. I might let it evolve itself into a step challenge, instead of matching the categories to the numbers ahead of time. 55 book is much more realistically closer to what I could read in a year, but I probably wouldn't make that either.

Thanks Onyx and Jenson.

Queen Elizabeth I - it really depends on what kind of historical books you like to read but one of these should work for you (Amazon probably have a few pages from each online so you can check which one you would like):

Elizabeth I by Anne Somerset
The First Elizabeth by Carolly Erickson
The Life of Elizabeth I by Alison Weir
Queen Elizabeth I by J. E. Neale
Elizabeth: The Struggle for the Throne by David Starkey
Alison Plowden's books

I like Neale's although it is quite old. Weir's is in her usual style - I like it but I she has her strange moments.. mainly leaps in logic that just make my head spin. Starkey is stable as always, Carolly Erickson is solid although now and then she also leaps in strange directions; Somerset knows her stuff although I am not sure I like her style. The same applies to Alison Plowden.

I know I did not help much but wanted to throw some titles for consideration:)

And if you are not looking strictly at a biography, there are also a lot of other Elizabeth related books.

I made one big switch in my categories - removed Civil War, renamed Honest Abe to be Civil War and its leaders and added a Romance category.

I was looking at the challenge in general and realized that I had nowhere to put romances other than general categories and I knew that I could not manage all those histories, so made a cut to Lincoln from 10 to 5 and same for the Civil War and combine them together.

Sorry Chrine to make so much trouble.

Hola Cheli. No problem at all. I'm just going to leave you in the US Presidents Challenge category (for Abe) and the Civil War category. I also added you to the romance category.

I have been splitting categories into two categories if they fit in both (ex. reading an author from a certain country in a certain time period or the general challenges category and the category for that specific challenge). Some people will be listed in more than 10 categories on the compiled list. I decided this based on the aim to be able to find people reading the same/similar categories as you.

It is possible to be listed in more than 10 categories in the compiled lists even if you only have 10 categories. An example would be YA Vampires would be in both YA and Vampires.

Please let me know if I've put one of your categories in the wrong place.

The best way to see where your categories have been placed in the detailed list is to use the find function on your browser to highlight your user name then scroll down to the detailed list and see where you are.

It can be done two ways. One is to press "Ctrl+F". The other is to go under Edit and select Find. Then type your user name into the box and select Highlight all. Scroll to where the detailed list is and your user name will be highlighted and easy to find. Be sure to use your exact user name. I think the only one I didn't do this with is Zoe, who is Zoe without the underlines.

This is also an easy way to see what any of your friend's categories are without having to find and/or open their threads. And say while you were checking out who was also reading your categories, you noticed someone who was in several of your categories with you. If you wanted to see what other categories they had, you could use this method.

chrine,

I have three set in categories - African & European & South American Novels - categories 8, 9 and 10. Or is it just Africa counted separately?

Would my category New in SF&F not also qualify for the Recently published books?

wow. great job, great list!

what is the difference between things like 'used books', 'bookswap', 'bookmooch' etc?

Sep 14, 2009, 11:09 am

@107 bfertig, I think bookswap and bookmooch are specific online communities designed for the passing on of unwanted books. Used books are just books obtained second-hand.

My categories are as follows:

1. Y.A.
2. All things Steinbeck (just can't leave him out)

I hope everyone enjoys their challenges in 2010. I know I am looking forward to mine as I enjoy this free choice time right now.

Wow, chrine, what an amazingly detailed list! I love being able to see at a glance who is reading other categories similar to mine and getting a sense of the wide variety of books we're planning for this challenge.

A few notes on my categories - I'm listed in science fiction, but don't have a category for it (just fantasy). Also, I'm including Early Reviewer books in my "Recommendations" category, kind of an overlap with miscellaneous/books I "have" to read, but that's probably getting nitpicky as any book I get in the program would most likely find its way into my LT Recommendations...

Thanks so much for all your hard work!

1) 1001 books you must read before you die

4) Science and Nature
5) Biography/memoir
6) Dickens and Dickens-inspired
7) Non-fiction
8) Israel/Palestine
9) Man-Booker Prize (winning and short-listed books)
10) Hello again (writers I enjoyed last year that I want to explore more)

Hola Annie. Three people are reading Africa books so I've pulled it out and counted it separately, instead of in the specific places category where your set in European and South American remain. I suspect South American books will be separated out as well as more people join the challenge and I add them in.

117chrine
Sep 15, 2009, 1:33 am

Hola Dave. Yes, yes it would. And I've added it in there.

I did not put anyone's use of new in that one because I did not know what they meant by new. It could be used as opposed to old/classic books of a genre to mean anything relatively recent. The Recently Published Books category is for books only three, maybe four, years old. So I only placed people's categories which had specific years stated in it.

I do not mind knowing if anyone's new certain type of books means in recent years only and adding them to that category. I deciphered as I could and certainly don't mind changing things so that they are correct because I am also anal like that. lol

118chrine
Sep 15, 2009, 1:33 am

Hola bfertig. Dave is correct in the message below yours.

119chrine
Sep 15, 2009, 1:38 am

Hola Belva. Your categories are already in the compiler.

I went and collected them from anyone who had a thread and a seemly definite list of categories last night and added them in before I posted the current list. As members join the Challenge, I've been adding their user names to a list at the end of the compiler doc. When they list their categories here, I take them off the list and compile their categories. I looked at the remaining threads for those on that list last night and added those in who had categories.

just a minor tweak - my category on thinking, that is philosophy/religion/science will probably try to focus on big issues, relations between the three as well as with society in general. i will specifically try to gain a variety of perspectives - e.g. many religions, areas of science, philosophies, rather than focusing on any one (e.g. Judaism, Christianity, etc). but i definitely won't be bothering with fiction regarding any of them.

Hola bfertig. I've got your philosophy/religion/science category compiled in this way. Religion under the religion category, science under the science category, and philosophy under the books on a topic category. None of these are solely fiction categories, though someone might included a fiction book in them. Is there a category you think yours might go better under? Would you like it under Misc. Categories? Thank you.

Hola chrine,
Yup, I see that I'm under all three. Just when looking under the Religion category, if I read it correctly, I'm listed with jmfonz52 as reading Christian Fiction. Such a minor thing though.. sorry for nitpicking!

Religion – 12
calm (Non-Fction), cmbohn (LDS Books), CatyM (Christian Books), channywax (LDS Books), busy91 (Christian Fiction & Non-Fiction), bfertig, jmfonz52 (Christian Fiction), nannybebette (Christianity), SqueakyChu (Of Jewish Interest), beatles1964 (2 – Wiccan & Pagan), VirginiaGill (Christian)

Hola bfertig. Rest easy, you've miss read it. There is nothing in parenthesis after your name so you're reading just Religion in general. The people with parenthesis have their reading further clarified within them and those without parenthesis are just reading the category in general. Check, for examples, either the classics category or the mystery category to see what I mean.

Hola Soffitta & Judy. Your categories have been added to the compiler. They will be included in the next update, as will everyone else who joins after this. I was reading over the list again (I love it!) and thinking about how one category can be listed in multiple places. So, I think my Ancient World category should be listed under both Historical Fiction and History, since it's a combination of those two categories.

Thank you again for doing this!

Some changes for me (mainly because of the TBR piles...):

- The SF and Fantasy novels published in 2010 go in the same category now (together with Horror and Speculative fiction -- I have trouble separating some of them anyway)
- Removing the European Novels as a category- I am already doing the European Challenge (and i needed one more empty slot anyway). I am leaving the other two continental categories - already picked the books anyway.

And in the two newly opened slots adding:
- 5. Novels, collections and anthologies published between 2000 and 2008
- 8. The older books - anything published before 1.1.2000
Add some shifting to get all the new books at the beginning of the list and my list look like this now:

1. Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror and Speculative Fiction Novels originally published in 2010
2. Crime Fiction, Mystery and Thriller Novels originally published in 2010
3. Anthologies and collections published in 2010
4. Literary journals with cover date in 2010 (including Asimov's, EQMM and the similar)
5. Novels, collections and anthologies published between 2000 and 2008
6. Leftover Novels from 2009 (published in 2009 but either arrived too late or did not have time to read them in 2009)
7. Non-fiction
8. The older books - anything published before 1.1.2000
9. African novels (written by authors from or living in different African countries; or with the story set mainly in Africa).
10. South American novels (written by authors from or living in different South American countries; or with the story set mainly in South America).

My first year doing this type of challenge and it looks like fun! Choosing the categories was hard enough...now to choose the books!

1. Published in ‘10
2. Blind Buys (used bookstore, unheard of books without looking at LT or other reviews)
3. Hail to the King (My quest to finish all of Stephen King's bibliography)
4. Dusty Shelves (TBR pile)
5, Dracula Approves (Bram Stoker Award Winners and Nominations)
6. Cotillion (new author debuts)
7. Now a Major Motion Picture (books made into movies)
8. Murder 101 (related to my job - forensics, true crime, science in general)
9. Tea Cosy (Agatha Christie mysteries)
10. Around the World in 365 Days (novels originally published in a foreign language)

And for a bonus, I'm going to try and read 5 self-published books!

Oki Doki....I've decided to jump in on this challenge. I sorted through my TBR pile and through my booksfree queue and picked out the books I plan to read over the next year...and sorted them into ten categories.

I'm not going to read a set number of books in each category. I plan to read 150 books over the next 14 months (we'll see if that ACTUALLY happens lol). I currently have a list of the exact books, but I'm sure I'll end up straying...

Here are my categories. I'll start a thread soon with the lists of books chosen at this point. I hope you enjoy my song lyric topics!

1. I like big books and I cannot lie- Books 600+ pages long
2. It's the end of the world as we know it- Dystopias, alternate futures, disasters, etc…
3. Girl's just want to have fun- Chicklit, romance, etc.
4. Stop pressuring me- Reccomendations and gifts
5. It's easy as 1, 2, 3- Series reading
6. Short, don't ever mean small- Short stories, plays, and graphic novels
7. Cause we are the chapions- Award winning books and award winning authors
8. I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up- Children's and YA lit
9. She's a big star and she eats caviar- Books-to-movies
10. I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a lover- Miscellaneous

156dreamlikecheese
Oct 11, 2009, 11:12 pm

There were so many other categories I wanted to include as well, but this is what I narrowed it down to.

1. Lost in Translation - books originally written in a language other than English
2. Digging My Own Grave - books from the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list
3. Things Could Be Worse - dystopian and post-apocalyptic fiction
4. Book'em Danno! - Booker Prize shortlisted novels
5. Cheese's Wall of Literary Shame - classic Japanese novels I've never read, despite having a degree in Japanese culture
6. Children of Herodotus - non-fiction history books, any topic
7. Land of the Rising Sun - non-fiction books about Japan
8. They Did What?!?!? - books turned into movies or TV series
9. Dusty Tomes - books written before 1900
10. How Novel! - books published between now and Dec 2010 (not necessarily fiction)

157psutto
Oct 13, 2009, 9:06 am

so my categories are:

Top 10 = 10 books from any top 10 lists
10 from 10 = 10 pieces of writing from 10 different authors
10 years = 10 books written between 2000 and 2010
10 times 10 = 10 pieces of writing from the last 100 years
10 minus 1 = 9 Lives (9 biographies)
10th month = 10 pieces of horror writing
10 to 10 = 10 recommendations from 10 friends
10 down to 1 and blast off = 10 pieces of writing about space travel
10 commandments = 10 books from the 1001 books to read before you die
10 feet = 10 pieces of travel writing

159crazy4reading
Edited: Oct 15, 2009, 7:52 pm

Well I have most of my categories chosen. Here they are:

1. Books to Screen
2. Recommendations from friends, LT and other places
3. Required reading (books my children have had to read for school)
4. 1001 books to read ??
5. What have I been missing?!? (authors new to me)
6. Johanna Lindsey books
7. From when I was a youngin' (YA/Children)
8. It's been in the mountain for too long... (Books from my TBR pile for years.)
9. Books from the Library (Goal is to borrow more books instead of buying them right away)
10. Books from series...

#4 category is one that I am still contemplating do to the fact that I don't own the book 1001 books to read before you die. I hope to buy the book and to then start choosing books to read. # 10 is still one I am not sure of yet. I don't want to make it misc. I will let you know when I do decide on that category.

What I find really handy for the 1001 list is that a lot of people use 1001 as a tag, so if you do a tag search on that, you get a list with the little green checks for the ones already in your library.

theres also a spreadsheet for the 1001 book (both versions) at http://johnandsheena.co.uk/books/?page_id=730 so you can track your progress :-)

Another tip: 1001 books is listed as an award in the common knowledge. The link is:
http://www.librarything.com/bookaward/1001+Books+You+Must+Read+Before+You+Die
It has 1265 works, so that's probably all books from all editions. It is probably a bit more accurate than tags, but the combination of both should be golden!

Oct 19, 2009, 9:41 pm

Technically not an added category, so you can choose whether to add this or not - I've decided to have an 11th "overlap" category (I'm planning one book from each of the original 10) of Global/translated reads.

175ThrillerFan
Edited: Oct 20, 2009, 10:26 am

NOTE A CHANGE BEING MADE!!!

The 2nd category was a little too confusing and difficult to fulfill (especially if a book was to be published late last year, then I'd have no time to read it to fulfill the requirement). Therefore, I have changed the second category to "One Word Titles".

The rest remain as is. I will be doing my year as November 2009 thru October 2010, as we are traveling for Christmas this year, and will have a hectic time setting up for Christmas next year as we will be playing host with a large number of family members coming for our child's (due April 2010) first Christmas. Won't have much time to read Nov/Dec 2010, and should then be ready for whatever the 2011 challenge is at the start of 2011.

I put a post up with a full description of my 2010 categories. (See http://www.librarything.com/topic/75009)

Here's a brief list of what those categories are:

1) New Authors
2) One Word Titles
3) Horror Novels
4) Thriller Novels
5) Political Intrigue Novels
6) True Crime Novels
7) Standalones
8) The "ThrillerFan 500"
9) Overflow
10) Wild Card

Actually, it's probably my easiest category aside from "Wild Card". Don't know for sure which ones will fall under that category vs a different category, but here are some one-word titles I'm looking at (some of which are already in my to-read stack, or my wish list and just haven't purchased yet):

1) Event by David Lynn Goleman (This will be among my new author reads)
2) Nathaniel by John Saul
3) Dispatch by Bentley Little
4) Relic by Preston and Child (This will be among my new author reads)
5) If I like either or both authors, Goleman and/or Preston/Child, in both cases, I believe their second book in the series for each are 1-word titles.

Of yours listed, already read 2 of them:

Dracula (teen-age years, early 90s')
It (about 2 years ago)

I'd say the biggest challenges are the 3rd book in the "New Authors" category (the other 2 I already planned on reading the first novel of, and was thinking maybe Brad Thor) and the "ThrillerFan 500". If Goleman and Preston/Child end up taking up the New Author and One Word slots, then James Rollins I have to figure out whether to put under Thriller or "ThrillerFan 500", and same with Vince Flynn, some of his will be under 500 pages (easily Political Intrigue category), but those over 500, have to figure out which category is in more need. The "Overflow" will likely be One Word Titles, Horror, Thriller, or Standalones, or some mix of that.

I'm changing my category VIII from Romance to Recommended Books: Books other people have told me I ought to read. I've been reading far too much romance this year, and I need a bit of a break from it. (I expect a few romances will creep in to the catch-all category, though.)

CatyM,

Depending on what Genre you are looking for recommendations in, here are a few books I'd highly recommend reading if you are into the Genre that precedes each:

Horror - Terminal by Brian Keene - It's about a man who is told at the very beginning that he has terminal cancer. He lives in a low to lower-middle class family, and doesn't want his wife or kids to suffer financially, so he gets involved in a bank robbery. The real horror is the situation he gets in at the end. There is no real "gore" in this book, so the perfect book to introduce someone to horror without grossing them out.

Political Intrigue/Espionage - Term Limits by Vince Flynn - The president is trying to pass a bill, and you have those that support the bill, and those that oppose it. A few get killed in order to try to skew the vote, and everyone's trying to figure out who plotted the murders.

Action/Adventure - Subterranean or Deep Fathom by James Rollins - Personally, I recommend all 5 of his "standalone" novels, and I have read his first Sigma Force novel...still have to read the others, great author. In Subterranean, a group explores the underground in the antarctic to try to find what happened to a previous group that went on a similar mission. In Deep Fathom, it's 2 groups trying to go on a deep sea mission, and let's just say that one seems to think the other is "in their way", and tries to use force to solve the problem.

True Crime - Perfect Poison: A Serial Killer's Deadly Medicine by M. William Phelps - This is about a woman named Kristen Gilbert (her profile is on Wikipedia) who used epinephrine to force people's hearts to give out so she could make code calls in order to cause the security guard (who had to monitor codes, and who was her partner in an affair) to be closer to her more often and it caused patients to die in a Veterans Hospital.

I think they all sound very interesting and can't wait to see your lists. I own a copy of Liberty For Women Freedom and Feminism in the 21st Century by Wendy McElroy which might fit
in either your Votes For Women or Women Unbound categories.

Totally enjoying seeing everyone's categories. I think I'm ready. Too lazy to make 'em cute! Also, my goal is one book per category and then I'll just add them as I read them. I put too much pressure on myself with the 999 Challenge and then didn't enjoy reading the books I "had" to. I am also going to try the ABC challenge.

My list:
1. Mystery, Thriller
2. Non-fiction
3.Prize winners
4.YA
5.New to me author
6. Next book in series
7.Looked good @ library/bookstore

I set these categories down a few weeks back and can't see them changing. Fairly unimaginative headings but I didn't want to get too specific. I have 4 bonus or substitute categories as well, but won't list them here.

I haven't fiddled around with my 1010 categories in a long time but realized how much I've enjoyed my biographies/autobiographies category in my 999 x 2 challenge.

I am changing my Vintage Mysteries category in 1010 to Biographies/Autobiographies. These won't necessarily be bios of famous people but they will be about peoples' lives.

As 999 x 2 winds down, I will probably tinker more with 1010.

There are a lot of really good categories listed, looks like I too will be making plans for 2011 ;-)

It's been so long since I abandoned my 999 that I haven't been here in a while so I started my own personal 10-10-10 with the following categories:

1. Review Books - I have more than 10 but need an extra reminder to get them read

2. Young Adult Books - 12+

3. about or published during the 60's - my birth decade

4. Christian fiction - I have a huge pile of fiction written specifically for the LDS market as well as several others

5. non-fiction - '09 was the first year I got into non-fiction and I'm loving it. I want to read at least 6 next year but am hoping for 10.

6. romance - this one is a walk-in-the-park

7. perpetual challenge books - how else will I remember about them?

8. fantasy/sci-fi - this one is a walk-in-the-park

9. mystery/thriller/suspense - cozies too

10. dusty or forgotten from my shelves - I need to stop buying books and tend to my own overwhelming TBR pile.

Dec 6, 2009, 6:15 am

I had to drop my art/learning category (I've got carpal tunnel syndrome and have had to stop drawing for now). I've replaced it with LT inspired/ Group reads (any books that don't fit into my other categories basically). I also rearranged the order of the other categories slightly. The numbers are for a minimum stepped challenge.

New category list

1-religion (non-fiction)
2-LT inspired or Group reads
3-F&SF
4-books translated into English (fact or fiction)
5-ancient history/early civilizations (non-fiction)
6-mysteries (fact or fiction)
7-I want to know more-books inspired by reading fiction (non-fiction or (if stuck) fiction -sequel)
8- myth and legend (fact or fiction)
9- historical fiction
10-other countries (around the world)

As it was originally posted near the beginning of this thread here is a copy of my original list (hope this helps with the compiling!)

1-religion (non-fiction)
2- I didn't know how to do that- New Stuff (non-fiction)
3-books translated into English (fact or fiction)
4-other countries (fact or fiction)
5-ancient history (non-fiction)
6-mysteries (fact or fiction)
7-I want to know more-books inspired by reading fiction (non-fiction or (if stuck) fiction-sequel)
8-myth and legend (fact or fiction)
9-historical fiction
10-SF&F

I'm sorry, chrine, but I'm changing a couple of categories.

Children's/YA fiction is being eliminated and replaced with Dystopias: Fact and Fiction.

Also, I think I had a category called Speculative Fiction. Since I don't like that term, I'm changing it to Fantasy and Supernatural. (I may have mentioned this change already.)

I came up with my categories in October, but wanted to sit on them a bit. Sure enough, I changed one. They're firm now though. I think. My rule for the 1010 challenge this year is that all the books have to come from Mnt TBR as it sits, Dec 31, 2009 (except for category #10)

1. Oldest Books in My Closet (third year for this category--it's my best tool for doing something with all those old books I have)
2. 1001 List (Books from the 2006 edition of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die)
3. More 1001 Books (I've been averaging about 25 a year, so this category is a must)
4. Big, Fat & Ugly (Big = books that take up too much room in the bookcase because I have a large edition--usually hard covers; fat=chunksters, say 500 + words; and ugly = editions that are unattractive--small font, lack of white space, yellowed pages, unattractive cover art . . . I love a beautiful book, and I need room on my shelves, so these ones have to go!)
5. Children & YA: I collected these books a few years ago, but lost interest and haven't read them. Time to move them out.
6. Non-fiction
7. Magic Realism (I've loved this genre for years, but haven't read all that much. Time to explore!)
8. CanLit (continuing my journey through Canadian literature for the third year--so much yet to explore)
9. Award winners (focus on Giller, Orange, Booker, but any recognized award will count)
10. Books Other People Want Me to Read (these may be in Mnt TBR, but not necessarily. Books for university, ER programs, Belletrista reviews, gifts, books people lend me, etc.)

2) Neil Gaiman
3) Charlaine Harris
4) Nonfiction

6) Audiobooks
7) Owned but unread

6. Civil War
7. Miscellaneous
8. Asia
9. From the Library
10. Classics

203katieinseattle
Dec 25, 2009, 1:03 am

I've completely scrapped my old categories. Here are the new ones.

1. Literary fiction from the last 25 years
2. Classics
3. Re-reads (some I read too long ago or too young, some just perennial favorites)
4. Post-apocalyptic (loosely defined and not necessarily fiction)
5. Science fiction
6. Science
7. Neuroscience/Cognitive science/Psychology
8. Books on books
9. Essays/anthologies
10. The inevitable catchall

I have a list of books, too, for the first 9 categories (and already have several to go in the catchall category, and the year hasn't even started yet...this is kind of driving home the fact that I'll never live long enough to read everything I want to. Depressing.)

204ThrillerFan
Edited: Dec 25, 2009, 10:36 pm

I am changing one of my categories. I haven't read any books yet in the one I'm removing (Horror Novels), and with what I got for Christmas this year, I doubt I'll read more than 1 or 2 horror novels this year, and if I do, they can easily fit in the "Standalones" category, or the "Wild Card" category.

Therefore, my new list is:

1) New Authors
2) One Word Titles
3) It's a War Out There!
4) Thriller Novels
5) Political Intrigue Novels
6) True Crime Novels
7) Standalones
8) The "ThrillerFan 500"
9) Overflow
10) Wild Card

Just a little clarification, category 3 is fictional books whose plot involves war (i.e. Stephen Coonts, a couple of Clancy's novels would fit here, like "Red Storm Rising", etc.)

Any horror novels I read this year will either go under Standalones or Wild Card.

My year is still November 2009 to October 2010, 3 books in each category.

Current count: 4 books done, 26 books to go.

Completed 1 book in each of categories 1, 2, 5, and 7.

Currently reading Memorial Day by Vince Flynn, which is in Category 8 (book is 574 pages in length).

KAzevedo’s 1010 Challenge

This is my first book challenge, and I have decided to attempt 100 books; 10 books in each of 10 categories, and to go from 1/1/2010 to 12/31/2010. I haven’t chosen most of the books yet and would love any suggestions, or any comments in general.

Categories - y = yes I have it, n= no, not yet

1. Mothers and Daughters - F or NF; exploring M/D relationships
2. Life Stories – NF; Biographies/Autobiographies/ Memoirs

4. Prize Winners - F or NF
5. 1001 Book List
6. Horses - F or NF

1. The Living Dead (0/10 Completed)
Mostly zombies, but may also include vampires.

2. Books About Books and Writing (0/10 Completed)
Fairly self-explanatory, though it could include either fiction or nonfiction.

3. Fairy Tales/Folklore (0/10 Completed)
Includes nonfiction criticism, retellings, as well as the original tales themselves.

4. Edwidge Danticat and Haiti (0/10 Completed)
Books written by the fabulous Edwige Danticat (I may reread the two I've got), as well as separate books about Haiti as supplementary material.

5. About Women/Feminism (0/10 Completed)
Works can be either fiction or nonfiction that feature strong women and/or feminist slants.

6. Pop Culture Phenomenon (0/10 Completed)
Mostly nonfiction works discussing pop culture, though fiction books that are heavy in pop culture references will also be included (if you have recommendations for these, I would love to hear).

7. Arm Chair Travels (0/10 Completed)
Travel narratives in fiction or memoirs.

8. From My Bookshelf (0/10 Completed)
I have a tendency to jump at the new and shiny in bookstores and the library, rather than reading the stacks already on my shelves. This is meant to rectify that.

9. From the Modern Library's 100 Best Books (0/10 Completed)
There are actually 200 books, since there is also the publicly voted list (with some overlaps). I'm working off the list from 2009, which is posted on my blog.

10. Miscellany (0/10 Completed)
The catch-all category, which will probably be the first to be filled.

4. The Books Gathering Dust on my Bedside Table
5. Short Stories and Plays
6. Mysteries
7. World Current Events, Non-Fiction
8. Newbery Award Winners
9. Cookbooks and Craft Books (trust me, there are some really good ones)
10. Books I Haven't Read by Favorite Authors

I've begun filling out my categories, but I'm having trouble with commitment - what if I don't want to read it later? So, the list of books in each category may be subject to change. Just saying that made me feel better. Phew!

> 216 Nittnut, you made me laugh with your committment anxieties. I feel your pain. I hope there are no rules as I plan to switch books that I can't get through without massive effort (some effort is good), even though my goal is also to stretch myself. Torture is not on my agenda.

I think I may have just moved into that category of torture. I started my challenge 11/1, and going through 10/31. In the Calendar year of 2009, I read around 24 or 25 books, so figured 30 would be a stretch but not torture. Well, in 2009, most of the books I read were in the 300-500 page range. As I look at what is in my list of books for this year, let's just say that a LOT of them are over 700 pages, and at the moment, 2 months in, I'm at 5 of 30 (basically right on pace) and just over 100 pages into my 6th novel (Red Storm Rising, which is 725 pages, by the way).

"Likely" books for 2010 include (not a complete list by any stretch):

Consent to Kill by Vince Flynn
The Unlikely Spy by Daniel Silva
Without Remorse by Tom Clancy
Hawke by Ted Bell
The Camel Club by David Baldacci
The Lions of Lucerne by Brad Thor
Flight of the Intruder by Stephen Coonts

Now go to your local bookstore (or Amazon.com) and check for yourself the length of these books. I'm starting to think that 30 books in a year for me is going to be torture!

220 Yes, but are they GOOD!. I remember being mesmerized by Red Storm Rising many years ago. As long as it keeps my interest, it's not torture for me. Torture is trying and trying to read something I "should" read even though I could care less.

I've decided to go for the 1010 challenge this year - I'm aiming to read up to 10 books in my categories but have no firm plan - I'll just enjoy the ride.

My categories are similar to last year's and aimed at getting as much of my TBR collection read as possible as well as allowing a little meandering off the path:

1. Virago Modern Classics
2. Persephone Books
3. 1001 Books You Should Read Before You Die
4. UK Crime Fiction
5. North American Crime Fiction
6. Crime fiction from the rest of the World (I know, I know, but 100 books is a lot to aim for and crime is my favourite genre)
7. The Arts (books on music, film, painting and literature)
8. What a kind thought! (Books I have received as gifts)
9. Ideas (philosophy, politics, social concerns)
10. Serendipity (because the year won't go by without something that doesn't fit into any of the categories above catching my eye)

Edited: Jan 1, 2010, 2:54 pm

As I start the challenge, I have changed my categories. They now are:

1. Contemporary Fiction
2. Series Continuation
3. New Series
4. Literary Giants
5. USA
6. History
7. Myth, Legend, and Fairy Tales
8. Fantasy
9. Lucy Maud Montgomery
10. Children / YA

The changes since I first posted my list are the addition of Literary Giants, History and Fantasy, and the elimination of British Isles, World View and Women Authors of Children's Books (which are still included in my sub-categories, but are not main categories any more).

I've changed my "Not My Usual" category to "Biographies and Memoirs" and have changed my Health/Medicine category to "Lawyers and the Law." Earlier, I changed "Vintage Mysteries" to "Health and Medicine."

I think that should be it for awhile now.

My categories are:

1. Cozy Mysteries
2. Lawyers and the Law
3. Baseball Books
4. Books About Chicago
5. American Presidents
6. Books About Disasters
7. General Nonfiction
8. Books by Anne Perry
9. Days and Nights
10. Award-Winning Books

I am tentatively sticking my toe in these waters. As I did not meet my 75 book challenge last year I am not sure why I think I'll get 10 books in 10 categories read but I do want to think about what I am reading and this seems like a good vehicle.

1. Fiction, general
2. Science fiction, fantasy fiction
3. Biography/Autobiography
4. Dragons
5. Hobbies: photography, paper crafts, dogs
6. Book group reads
7. It's About Time (books I've owned for too long to still be not read)
8. Young Adult reads
9. Childrens'
10. History - very broadly defined.

Maggie, you don't have to get to 10 in each category. Several of us are doing a half-challenge with only 5 in each, and other people are aiming for different numbers like 6 or 7 in each. Good luck either way!

I'm doing the "10" part of the challenge that has me list 10 categories. I'm not trying for 100 books. Even with liberal cross-listing between my categories, I'm not expecting to end up with 10 books under each. Still, I hope having the categories will encourage me to read a wide variety of works.

My categories are:

A. Poetry
B. Drama
C. Books in Translation
D. Early Reviewers
E. "Classics" (broadly defined)
F. Contemporary Fiction
G. U.S. Civil War
H. Christianity, Religion, & Spirituality
I. Teaching
J. None of the above (for books that don't fit into the other 9)

Here are my categories:

I. Children's/YA Fiction

IV. Romance
V. Vampires, Werewolves, and Fairies OH MY!!! (Paranormal Fiction/Urban Fantasy)
VI. Nonfiction
VII. Short Stories
VII. Discworld
IX. Books by Non-US Authors
X. Miscellaneous Novels

Jan 15, 2010, 8:10 am

I've committed to reading three in each category, but right now I'm feeling cocky so I think I may be able to do more. My categories reflect a lot of my to reads. I've already changed one category and may change another. Here's what I have as of today:

1. Off the Shelf - Books that I own that have been sitting on the shelf and need to be read
2. On the List - I've been building a to read list for 8 - 9 years--time to move some off that list
3. The Middle Kingdom, Fiction - Fiction set in China
4. The Middle Kingdom, Nonfiction - Nonfiction set in China
5. Adoption - Any books about adoption whether fiction or non-fiction
6. What-Ever! - So I can read whatever I feel like reading
7. Parenthood - Books about parenting that can be either fiction or non-fiction (this is the one that may change)
8. Race - Any book that discusses race or racial issues
9. Travelers - Books about traveling anywhere in the world.
10. 1001 Children's Books - Books that are in the 2009 version of 1001 Children's Books You Must Read before You Grow Up

3. I's true! (Non-fiction)

I just can't get my 10th category right. I've now changed Biographies and Memoirs to Award-Winning Books and reflected that in my list at #225.

There are a lot of different mystery awards given out every year but some might be for other types of awards.

KAzevedo, I'm just going to take a stab in the dark and say that war is his thing.

Oddly enough, I'm just finishing up a book about a hypothetical World War III (Red Storm Rising). I must say though, while I also enjoy war novels (though I'd say I read Spy Novels over War Novels 2 to 1), Clancy seems to be a little TOO detailed. I'm in the upper-600's out of 725. You could cut about 200 pages from the book, and still get the point across. Probably going to give it 3 stars.

I have decided to change one of my categories from Classic books to Made into Film. I was just getting put off by the term Classic.

244ty1997
Jan 23, 2010, 1:13 am

These are the categories I am using.

The numbers in parentheses are the minimum numbers I'd like to read in each category in 2010, with one catch: Books can double (or even triple) count if they qualify for multiple categories. It's a bit of cheatery, but it's the only way I'll achieve these (ambitious-for-me) goals based on my past annual reading performance, and it may help to direct some interesting combo reading choices.

A. College Prep English (15) Books from the 1001 books lists, because I've read a woefully low number.
B. Something Different (7) - Things outside of my normal reading comfort zone. Such as Fantasy, sci-fi, short story collections, plays, graphic novels, YA lit, Children's lit, maybe even poetry.
C. Something New (7) - Books that are First in a series
D. Group Reads (5) Group Reads here on LT, or reads for the book clubs that I'm not exactly a member of
E. Classic Mysteries (5)
F. Global Reads (5)
G. Dewey/LOC Challenge (5)
H. Learning Is Fun (5) Non-fiction
I. Contemporary Fiction (10)
J. Doorstoppers (3) To avoid only reading short books for challenges. I like a good epic novel.

245GoofyOcean110
Jan 23, 2010, 11:04 am

Made some changes to the categories and switched the order for others. I'll leave the original categories as the OP. Am thinking of making Oh The Places You'll Go more specific, e.g. water bodies, or deserts, or places I'd like to go, or something, but I already am on the board there, so we'll see.

1) Coffee Table Book - I look at them, may as well read one.
2) Stewart/Colbert '08! - as promoted on tv
3) Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee - Native Americans, pre-Columbus western hemisphere
4) 5 stars or 2 thumbs - just renamed the reviews category
5) I think therefore I am - same
6) Diamonds are forever - new location
7) Awesome Audiobooks - not necessarily controversial...
8) POTUS Power! - new location
9) Oh the places You'll Go! - subject to change
10) I've got your number - same

Here are my categories. I'm planning for the modest goal of at least 5 books in each category, which should keep my reading varied:
1. Fantastical Creatures
2. Older Than Me
3. Authors New to Me
4. Anthologies
5. Non-fiction
6. Coffee Table Books
7. Biographies
8. Gifts and Other Books I Didn't Buy (ARCs, member giveaways)
9. Books Acquired no Later than 2008 (to work on the TBR pile)
10. Square Peg (doesn't fit anywhere else)

I am changing a category in my list (the only category without at least 1 book already listed for this year).

That's my Category #6. I am changing it from "True Crime" to "Some Like it Hard". The category pertains to Science Fiction. It's "hard sci-fi", meaning more science, physics, space, mathematics, etc. None of the "fantasy" or "soft sci-fi".

248bear1982
Mar 5, 2010, 11:03 pm

I know I'm probably a little late adding to this list but my categories are
1. 1001 Books to Read Before You Die
2. 1001 Children's Books to Read Before You Grow Up
3. Classic Mysteries
4. Oprah's Book Club
5. Rereads
6. New to me Authors
7. Dead Things - Vampires, zombies, maybe even dinosaurs
8. Titles containing the word 'Green'
9. The 10 Decades of the 1900's (one from each decade)
10. From my Bookshelf

I am trying to read 10 from each category but have picked categories which may overlap - I read a lot at the moment but I am a University student with a baby on the way, so my time may soon run out.
