Pool boys and Johnny Depp clones are very nice for the new lady members but what's here for the men?

Oh ... I think I answered my own question.

Welcome everyone! I'd invite you all over to the "Plotting Mayhem" thread, but it's a bit messy in there. If you don't mind food fights and marshmallows, then come on over!

If you see blue goo on the floor, just step around it. MerryMary scared the Smurfs a little while ago.

Apr 24, 2010, 8:58 pm

The people posting pictures of cheese are torturing me. I love strong cheese, but I will have to remain cheese-less until payday.
And what is a Floomba?

23MerryMary
Apr 24, 2010, 9:05 pm

A Floomba is a roomba that has been genetically altered to fly. And climb. And possibly attack.

24RioLindaAnnie
Apr 24, 2010, 9:48 pm

Ah...that makes sense! I might risk inviting one home to eat my cobwebs in the corners of my ceiling.

25MerryMary
Apr 24, 2010, 9:52 pm

Be careful. Morphy gave them minds of their own. Maybe evil minds. No one is sure, because no one wants to get close enough. When asked, Morphy denies all, but with an evil laugh.

26maggie1944
Apr 24, 2010, 10:59 pm

and I think they are usually found hiding, and conspiring, deep in the darkest closets

brrr

scary

27GeorgiaDawn
Apr 24, 2010, 11:24 pm

RioLindaAnnie - Stay away from the Roombas, Floombas, and any other "oomba" that appears here in the Green Dragon. Morphy has a particular talent for turning safe machines into monsters!! Jump up here and have a seat on the bar. It's relatively safe and we always have food!

28hfglen
Apr 25, 2010, 4:51 am

Somebody get RioLindaAnnie a PGGB! (and welcome to the nuttiest pub in cyberspace, RLA!)

29RioLindaAnnie
Apr 26, 2010, 9:53 pm

Thanks for the welcome everybody! And I would wager on my cat, Lucy, in any fight with a Floomba (she fights dirty).

30maggie1944
Apr 27, 2010, 7:55 pm

We've even seen pictures of cats sitting on top of roombas...any thing is possible; but, don't underestimate the tricky Morphy. She may have programmed the little devils to eat cat tails.

31RioLindaAnnie
Apr 27, 2010, 9:38 pm

I am not sure that Lucy would mind losing her tail. It gets on her nerves quite often.
She has actually gotten her claws stuck in it during a wrestling match with it. I had to unhook her without laughing (not easy). Even my vet has never heard of that one before.

32jennieg
Apr 28, 2010, 9:51 am

Well, that's an image to start the day with. Thanks for the chuckle, RLA.

33jillmwo
Apr 29, 2010, 8:29 pm

You know, it occurs to me that we don't see all that many cats in the Green Dragon. Can we clone Lucy? She would clearly add to the general revelry. If she'd like, I'm sure we could arrange for her to become either bigger or smaller. That way she could win the battle with the tail for sure!

Welcome all.

34RioLindaAnnie
Apr 29, 2010, 10:24 pm

In order to clone her, you have to catch her first and she is fast.

Good luck with that:)

And hey, I didn't come empty handed. My cat, black as night itself and aggressive as the creatures that inhabit it, has decided to join us all in a fierce defense against all existing "oombas" -and those yet to come.

Has anyone heard of the roombas with tasers? Run away!!!!

40jillmwo
May 1, 2010, 9:02 am

Blame the smurfs. They irritated the roombas at some point in the past, and the roombas now periodically run amok zapping the little blue beings.

41RioLindaAnnie
May 2, 2010, 1:57 am

When it comes to roombas and smurfs...I'll side with the roombas. I always want to throw something at the smurfs. I have no problems with small, blue beings (I could hang out with the Nac Mac Feegles and some of Granny's special medicine all night), but the smurfs are just too sickly sweet to be tolerated for any length of time.

42RioLindaAnnie
May 2, 2010, 2:02 am

Hey girlfromshangrila,

In between battles with the roombas, could your beautiful black companion help my feline companion deal with her obnoxious, aggressive tail?

43hfglen

#41 ... and now you know why their life-span here in the GD is so short.

44RioLindaAnnie
May 2, 2010, 1:41 pm

#43 ... and yet they keep coming back. Is that a lack of survival instinct or just idiocy?

45jennieg
May 3, 2010, 12:53 pm

Maybe they just breed quickly . . .

46girlfromshangrila
May 3, 2010, 3:23 pm

#37: Thanks! Now if anyone would show me the way to those Gargle Blasters...

#39: With tasers, you said? Uh-oh. I think we will need more cats.

Don't know if this will work, but I thought I would share some of the snack I'm having while I listen in on various conversations here.

#77 - We have a "books you've purchased in June" thread in this group, here: http://www.librarything.com/topic/92266#2016101 and a moaning/unhappy/happy thread here: http://www.librarything.com/topic/92168

Thanks for the welcome. I always behave at the bar, it gives me something to hold on to .. can smurfs swim?

(edited for spelling...)

101MrsLee
Jul 28, 2010, 6:50 pm

#100 - Yes, Smurfs can swim, but they don't because of their resemblance to blueberries and the water buffalo might get confused and eat them, so if you don't want to be annoyed by the little guys, the pool is a great place to be. So long as you don't mind water buffalo. And puffins.

102jillmwo
Jul 31, 2010, 3:51 pm

The water buffalo are actually quite amenable to being shoved out of the way. On the other hand, there's no reason to miss out on the opportunity to interact with the pool boys so don't hesitate to ask for assistance in moving the big and little beasties.

Welcome all!

103RioLindaAnnie

Our pub is very nice, a good place to relax and chat about books but you do have to keep alert as there are SPITTING COBRAS in one closet, and then I think we still have a bunch of Roombas in another closet. If you are feeling frisky there is a closet full of pillows and we can have pillow fights and PGGBs afterwards. Please feel free to relax and have fun.

#157 ". . . falls fast asleep"

Having used that phrase many a time, I suddenly wondered can one "fall" slow asleep?
I'm a newbie myself, but I welcome the other newbies. I still don't understand everything that goes on here, but I sit smiling, pretending, and nodding wisely. I don't think I've made too much of a donkey's behind of myself . . . yet!

164maggie1944
Jan 6, 2011, 4:56 pm

Fall slowly asleep is when you drift off, and jerk awake, and then drift off again, and then you're awake, listening to the night's noises, or a radio, and then you become asleep again. Happens to me just about every night.

165clamairy
Jan 6, 2011, 4:58 pm

That's only because we haven't had our First Annual Make a Donkey's Behind of Yourself Day yet. First we have to figure out when it's going to be...

To answer your question, I've fallen so slow asleep that I call it insomnia on occasion. However, I don't think the 'fast' in fast asleep refers to speed.

Looked it up. Check out number 21:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fast

167clamairy
Edited: Jan 6, 2011, 5:07 pm

Hee hee... No! I meant check out meaning of fast number 21 in the link I posted. 'Fast asleep' means 'soundly asleep' not quickly asleep. See, that's not what I would have thought. I would have thought that it meant 'tight' and in 'held fast.' I'd say "you learn something new every day" except I know I won't remember this for very long.

Macaroni & Cheese with Taleggio & Prosciutto
I originally found this at Epicurious.com
My hubby does not eat mushrooms, so I don't add them.
I add extra prosciutto - about 1/2 pound, sliced a bit more thickly than normal
I add extra taleggio, too
and I've never found 'pure' white truffle oil. It's always infused with olive oil.

Even with 2 boys in the house and a teenage one at that, this never lasts past the first helping of leftovers.

That looks incredible. I will save that for Summer. The only White Truffle Oil I have seen is Olive Oil infused with the truffle. I don't think there is any actual oil in the truffle. They are like mushrooms, so the olive oil w/ truffle is the only one there is. I just did some googling and I guess you REALLY have to read the label, as many oils labeld truffle oil don't have actual truffle essence in them at all, but are synthetically flavored.

From wikipedia: ~ Daniel Patterson reported in the New York Times that "even now, you will find chefs who are surprised to hear that truffle oil does not actually come from real truffles." Many chefs continue to use inexpensive synthetic truffle oil, considering it to be "a reasonable substitute." ~

Just in case, I've not noticed a huge amount of formal etiquette around here. We are a pub, for goodness sakes. We like to drink, talk about pretty people, rave about good books, discuss the latest in pool boy fashions, worry about whether the roombas will vacuum up our toes, and have pillow fights. We like baseball, reading journals, photographs of pretty things. And we love books, book cases, book stores, e-readers, and movies based on books.

Jump right in and have as much fun as you can stand.

oh, Mrgroo.... Mrgroo.... can you make a pitcher of PGGBs? Please? Please?

BTW, can we shoot Peeps out of that marshmallow gun? I "accidentally" bought 3 dozen yesterday and tried feeding them to toddlers. And as the 10 year old would say: "epic fail"!

242jillmwo
Apr 10, 2011, 11:57 am

Oh, I like Peeps! Let me load up some of the yellow bunnies. That's seasonally appropriate.

(Actually, I only like to eat one single Peep, once each year. Otherwise, they are too sweet for me.)

243GeorgiaDawn
Apr 10, 2011, 12:43 pm

Sakerfalcon, there is always room here on top of the bar. Join us! This is by far the safest place in The Green Dragon. Occasionally, we have to duck behind the bar to avoid the food fights. Welcome!

jillmwo - One Peep is enough for me, too.

244sandragon
Apr 10, 2011, 1:25 pm

What are Peeps? I thought it was short for people, so maggie's comment in 241 made me think of the cannibalism thread.

245MerryMary
Apr 10, 2011, 2:27 pm

Peeps can mean people, but around Easter time the word refers to super-soft marshmallow critters covered with softly colored sugar. Yummy but too much sometimes. Usually bunnies and duckies, and lots of pastel colors.

246sandragon

It is Truth: Peeps are over the top sugary sweet, sweet, sweet. One is more than enough. Even the three year old toddler only ate the ears off the bunny and then quit. Smart girl.

250clamairy
Apr 10, 2011, 8:50 pm

I buy them, but I don't eat them. I think of them more like decorations. LOL I did once find a package buried in the back of the pantry that was a year old and the peeps were still soft-ish. (Once you open the package they turn to rocks.)

251MrsLee
Apr 10, 2011, 11:05 pm

Marissa_Doyle, I'm glad you posted that link! I always think of that when I see Peeps arrive in the stores. :)

252Sakerfalcon
Apr 11, 2011, 8:12 am

I lived in the States for eight years and never did try a Peep. To me, Easter means Cadbury's Cream Eggs, which are also pretty sweet. I still have one left from last year - I think it's like dwarf bread; I take it out of the cupboard, look at it, then put it back and eat something else!

253MrsLee
Apr 11, 2011, 12:00 pm

LOL, I feel the same way about Cadbury's Cream Eggs! They are lovely, but I feel slightly ill after eating one. I found some mini ones this year that are much better, but still too sweet. It's one of those foods that is better in memory than actuality, like Twinkies, HoHos and such.

254clamairy
Apr 11, 2011, 12:21 pm

I found some decent dark chocolate Easter candies last year. I'll be looking for them ALL again. Someone makes a small dark chocolate coconut egg. Mounds, maybe? We liked those. OH! And I saw coconut m&ms the other day, but they were milk and not dark chocolate. I bought them anyway, but will be saving them for the baskets.

Hi there!

I am not sure if I am meant to wait for an official welcome so just excuse me for barging in on the 'peeps' convo. My name is KrisB (if you speak Auslan think 'peel potatoes' or 'crispy'). I am known to Will and have been known in the past to be in physical proximity to him as such to engage in direct conversation. However, these days distance is a tyranny in trade for living in the most 'livable' city in Australia.

Cheers!

Quick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pour some PGGB on the Roombas. They must be stopped.

Welcome, everyone!

Great idea, Maggs! The PGGBs usually stop people in their tracks. :) Surely it can work with those roombas.

Don't feed them PGGB after midnight!!!!!!!! (That's big box, do you think someone will miss it?????!)

349melonbrawl
Sep 26, 2011, 11:08 pm

Doubtful. My professor was tipped off to its existence by his friend in Aberystwyth, so there's no chance they'll trace the, uh, "strategic liberation" to us.

(I only tell you this because I really like typing "Aberystwyth.")

Can we have PGGBs after noon?

352maggie1944
Oct 14, 2011, 8:28 am

You can have a PGGB any time you want one! They are not really helpful when you are doing a Do Nothing But Read Day as usually you'll be more likely to Do Nothing.

Wow, we've picked up quite a few new members in less than a week.

Welcome Chipofftheoldbomb, KateWentworth, verylargesquid, suelander, AZMichelleC, SAtrium15, jehbeh, Psychotick, Bijou_Twinkletoes, mburgin101 and K.W.McCabe!!!

Looks like we've only got 176 more to go until we hit 3,000. I'll probably wait until it's under 100 to start the countdown thread, though.

Dec 9, 2011, 12:59 pm

Thank you for the welcome! I lurked for a few days and you seemed like such a nice, fun group of folks; I'm very happy to be here.

I was playing Santa just before i got here. Where can I put this pillow I had stuffed under my shirt?

369MrsLee
Dec 9, 2011, 1:39 pm

Pillows go by the bar, handy for throwing or for catching anyone who indulges in a PGGB. Love your name Bijou_Twinkletoes. :) I'm having visions. ;)

370Bijou_Twinkletoes
Dec 9, 2011, 3:18 pm

Thanks, MrsLee. I've heard that PGGBs can cause visions. You can find your own silly elf name here: http://www.jokesunlimited.com/christmas_elf_name.php

Dec 9, 2011, 4:31 pm

Sorry, dear. I just can't see myself calling you that! I just can't.

Welcome all. It's the holiday season, so rather than the PGGBs, perhaps we might all have some lovely eggnog? The roombas might be a little less tipsy that way.

373MerryMary
Dec 9, 2011, 5:58 pm

At least eggnog might cut down on the smoky emissions from every orifice every time they suck up PGGBs.

And, by the way, I am Lucky Bubba-Louie

I'm Lucky Twinkle-Toes. :)

Welcome everyone!

*finds comfortable spot on bar*

I'm going to settle in right here until the countdown thread begins. Can someone stoke the fire? It's a bit chilly in here.

375maggie1944
Dec 9, 2011, 7:22 pm

So, come on over to the chat room. I'll ask Rosie to put on a Yule log and we'll have a fine merry fire, and some egg noggin' too.

8 pm, Green Dragon, time. Be there, or be square.

376GeorgiaDawn
Dec 9, 2011, 7:23 pm

I will be there! Been missin' my chatty friends.

377Ennas
Dec 10, 2011, 2:09 am

*waves at all the dragons* Hi!

What is Green Dragon Time? It's 8 am here now. *yawn*

378GeorgiaDawn
Dec 10, 2011, 10:20 am

Ennas - We generally think of Green Dragon time as Eastern Standard Time. Several of us try to meet around 8pm EST on Friday nights to chat because it's a good time for us. The chat room is open any time and others use it at other times. Rosie, our very own robot, is there is serve food, beverages, or even stoke the fire if you're chilly.

On your way there, be careful of any wayward Roombas. Morphy likes to tinker with them. They have a mind of their own (well, of Morphy's making).

To clarify for all the new Dragons: A spot on the bar is the safest place to be. It's above the SPITTING COBRAS, and away from most of the Roombas. If there is a food fight, you can quickly duck behind the bar and continue to read in relative peace and quiet. :)

379maggie1944

381Ennas
Dec 10, 2011, 11:37 am

LOL The chatroom sounds pretty dangerous. I'll wear my armour and an umbrella and a christmas hat. Or something.

Mmm....

Nice to meet you, Psychotick! Perch on a stool and mind the SPITTING COBRAS, puffins, roombas and bug-eyed monsters. Shove the water buffalos over and let the pool boys bring you a beverage. Rosie makes great drinks, including the Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters (PGGBs).

Hello, everyone! Welcome to The Green Dragon!

391jillmwo
Jan 2, 2012, 6:48 pm

It's a friendly crowd so just wade on in and play with the rest of us. Roombas are to be eyed warily as they suffer dramatically from rewiring; by contrast, puffins and pool-boys are delightful.
Oh, and the beverages are quite potent.

392maggie1944
Jan 2, 2012, 7:29 pm

And do be careful should you choose to visit the chat room (see GD's home page)... the stools there have been known to kick people out for no apparent reason. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again.

We like to visit there on Friday evenings about 8 pm Green Dragon time.

393GeorgiaDawn
Jan 2, 2012, 7:57 pm

Bring duct tape to the chat room. It helps if you tape yourself to the stools. You can also tie up the SPITTING COBRAS with it.

There are, if I remember correctly, a couple private under-the-pool hideways for, um...reading. Yeah. Reading.

And a swim-up poolside bar.

And - my personal favorite - blue-footed boobys.
