The last thread had gone way over two hundred so I thought I'd start the next. I have three duplicates to offer to you (insert fanfare here!):

The Lost Traveller by Antonia White - 2nd style green spine, good condition but with vertical crease to RH edge of front cover.
The Lacquer Lady by F. Tennyson Jesse - original green spine edition, very good condition, covers unmarked, looks unread, small, neat ownership inscription.
My Brilliant Career by Miles Franklin - 3rd(?) style i.e. green spine with coloured apple and no horizontal green banner to front cover. Picture is photograph from the film version, reading creases to spine but otherwise good condition.

It's payday tomorrow for me so hurry up before I spend it all and have nothing left for postage this month!

Good idea Kerry! Please would you allow me to give a good home to The Lost Traveller as I do not own it ?

#2 Certainly Julie. let me know your address and I will send it.

Lacquer Lady has also been reserved, so just My brilliant Career left. I know that's fairly common (it's the second one I've given away) but someone may not have it yet!

The Squire has arrived. Thank you, Rob. What a nice copy for having been on the library shelves! I fear that means it wasn't often checked out. Oh, well---my good fortune.

I loved The Squire. It brought back evocative memories of new motherhood when your babies are ALL!

Joanna Kavenna mentions the book in Saturday's Guardian in an interesting article on fiction that looks at how pregnancy affects your mind. (Turned it to cotton wool in my case, but hey!)

"In Enid Bagnold's The Squire (1938), the "squire" is a pregnant woman (expecting her fifth child) whose husband is away in India. During the birth, she slips into a visionary state: "She was not unconscious but she had left external life. She was blind and deaf to world surface. Every sense she had was down in Earth to which she belonged, fighting to maintain a hold on the pain, to keep pace with it, not to take an ounce of will from her assent to its passage." Again: this sense that the woman in labour is elsewhere, far from "external life". Yet, finally, we read it from the inside, within the strangeness."

The full article is at:

As a result of this weekend's haul I have completed my Virago Frost in May quartet so that I have my old version available to give away. It is a paperback omnibus of The Sugar House and Beyond the Glass published by Fontana with a cover photo from the BBC version broadcast in 1982. It's in good, read condition and may suit someone who hasn't yet got the Virago edition. I'm happy to send it anywhere with the usual proviso that outside Europe it would go by surface mail.

The Newberry Library book sale today yielded three Viragoes only. (Last year I think I got something like 12). One is a beautiful almost unread original green copy of

Willa Cather: A Life Saved Up by Hermione Lee, brand new!
Company Parade by Storm Jameson, it has a little scratch on the cover, but it is an original green
Treasure Hunt by Molly Keane

and two Beacon Travelers:

The Gobi Desert by Mildred Cable

Roughing It in the Bush by Susanna Moodie

As part of my holiday I visited several charity shops and cleared out their stock of Viragos - here are the duplicates that I'd like to give away:

The Enchanted April - 2nd style green cover with a picture from the TV production in 1992 (?). Creasing to spine but otherwise fine.
Elizabeth and her German Garden - Latest cover style, mint condition.
The Age of Innocence - Latest cover style, slight creasing to spine.
Frost in May - Latest cover style, mint condition.
The Blind Assassin - Good condition, creasing to spine.

I'd like to keep the Margaret Atwood UK only - it's the size and weight of a housebrick - the others I'm happy to send anywhere (by surface mail outside Europe).

All the books I offered in #83 are still available EXCEPT The Age of Innocence and I have two more to ad to the list:

Precious Bane an original green style VMC, reading creases to spine and pages a bit yellowed (printed 1990) but binding still tight.
I Capture the Castle latest style cover i.e. pastel picture, slight bumping to corners but otherwise clean and unmarked.

On my mother's throw-away shelf I found a copy of Plagued by the Nightingale which I'll be happy to send to anybody on this side of the Atlantic. It has the obligatory inch cut out of the bottom front cover, is stamped "Not for Resale" and is a little warped from bad shelving. All that is too bad since it is an old Penguin green. On the other hand, it's perfectly readable until you find a better copy, and (as I'm fond of saying) it would look pretty on the shelf.

Fenny by Lettice Cooper, green copy

The Enchanted April - 2nd style green cover with a picture from the TV production in 1992 (?). Creasing to spine but otherwise fine.
Elizabeth and her German Garden - Latest cover style, mint condition.
Frost in May - Latest cover style, mint condition.
I capture the castle - Latest cover style, good condition, slight wear to edges.
The Blind Assassin - Good condition, creasing to spine.

Beth Book Dial edition in good condition...one barely noticeable crease across front cover.

Vera by von Arnim. Not a VMC but an absolutely beautiful Washington Square
Press edition. I'm only getting rid of it because I snagged a beautiful VMC green on PBS. I actually contemplated keeping both editions, but that's just silly.

I'd like to offer George Eliot's The Lifted Veil, which I have just reviewed, to anyone who'd like it. Actually, I'd like it out of the house asap *shudder*.

Condition: old green, cover is chipped showing white along the sides of the spine and edges of the cover. Pages a little yellowed and brittle but in one piece. Smells a little musty, like it's been stored in a church (probably because it came from the Methodist Book Sale!) but not bad.

Inside front cover is my name / date / where bought it from and the BookCrossing url and BCID, all in a rather fetching purple ink.

As usual, I would be pleased if the recipient could acknowledge and eventually review it on BookCrossing (no need to join, anonymous is fine)

Will send ANYWHERE! as it's small. Did I mention that it gives me the shudders and I would like it out of the house??!

Not a Virago, but a curiosity for Edith Wharton fans. I picked up a copy of The Decoration of Houses by Edith Wharton and Ogden Codman at the Hyde Park book sale today Example:

"The Smoking-Room proper, with its Turkish divans, narghilehs, brass coffee-tables and other Oriental properties, is no longer considerd a necessity in the modern house." That's a relief!

"A bronze Pallas Athene or a cowled medieval pleureur would be obviously out of harmony with the spirit of a boudoir; (I guess...nothing like a crying monk to kill the mood.), while the delicate graces of Chelsea would become futile in the library."

If anyone is redecorating the ballroom, this is the book for you.

Unfortunately, it weighs a ton so I would like to keep it stateside.

210Liz1564
Edited: Oct 10, 2010, 8:58 pm

It certainly is fun and really underscores how domestic life has changed. But some advice is never out of date. "Beautiful pictures and rare prints are for rooms where people spend their days not where they assemble for an hour."

One of my favorites "The habit of regarding art as a thing apart from life is fatal to the development of taste."

Or even in 1902

"Children suffer not only from the number of presents they receive, but from over-crowding of their rooms." I was dismayed when I entered the bedroom of a grandniece to see her bed covered with over fifty beanie babies and more were on shelves and in baskets. She was not yet five at the time! At 12 she has become a consummate consumer, an adman's target.

But enough of high-jacking the duplicate's thread.....sorry

A Wreath for the Enemy by Pamela Frankau (VMC - 1st edition format);
Christina Rossetti - A biography by Frances Thomas (Some creases in the spine otherwise in very good condition;
Letters from Constance by Mary Hocking;
Boston Adventure by Jean Stafford (Not a Virago copy but in good condition).

Dear Peggy - now sit down and take a few deep breaths and I will be delighted to send it on its way to NC on Monday. Could you let me have your address again, please?

Oh dear! A biography of Christina Rossetti and a Virago to boot! That is such a tempting offer but I feel so greedy...

>Grant - sounds more like that incurable affliction "Viragoitis" rather than greed - if you would like the biography, let me know and I will send it to you.

I went to the Book Trader during my lunch break and walked away with seven Viragos, three of which are duplicates, and so with the members of this group in mind I'd like to give them away to good homes:

Mad Puppetstown
The Rising Tide
That Lady (be forewarned that this copy is very dog-earned and marked up).

Well, I've been trying to restrain myself for the past 3 hours, but I'm going to cave. :)

I would be thrilled to provide a home for Mad Puppetstown, if you're okay with sending that one to Canada.

I just finished reading The Rising Tide. A really wonderful novel so I hope someone grabs it. Check out my review if you want to know what it is about.

I liked that one too. Got it from my virago secret santa and am now a molly keane/m.j. farrell convert!

That Lady is a wonderful book and absolutely made me fall in love with Kate O'Brien. I hope someone who hasn't it, jumps on it, dog-eared or not.
However, if they don't, (my copy is a very old one and the title is even different/It is called For One Sweet Grape), I would love to have it in the green Virago even beat up. But only if no one else wants it, please Kasthu.
thank you,
belva

Think it's time for a new thread? I will go create one.

ETA: AND I did it. Here it is, and there's a new offer there.
