Proposing tag combinations with quoted tag produces blank

Reposting from here where theapparatus diagnosed the (or at least a) cause of the "blank tag" combination problem. (Sorry theapparatus, I don't mean to step on your toes, but I wanted a very clear subject line for the bug tracker.)

Addendum:

I hope this category is appropriate. There isn't one for tags -- should there be?

The combining/separating category is meant for combining/separating tags, too, if I remember the category discussion correctly. So, yes, it's appropriate.

Not a problem. I agree that we should be linking to the threads where we discuss these issues/ concerns/ annoyances/ stuff to bug Tim about/ etc.

edit: ANyone else noticed that the Find out More link at the upper right of this page is broken? It links back to this page which probably means it;s a blank link. If that hasn't been raised yet, can smeone do it please?

>4 theapparatus: Tim replied about that in another thread. He said it will link to the blog post he hasn't written yet - Re: Find Out More.

A perfect example of why linking is a plus. :)

Thanks

But wait a second, I see both blank and "health insurance" listed as proposed tags on health insurance.

As mentioned in the other thread if you start from the tag with quotes and suggest the one without quotes, you get blank. If you start from the tag without quotes and suggest the one with quotes, it works. If you do both, because you tried the first one first, you get both - one blank and one that works.

7&8> Agreed. I had found a workaround. You can do it in one direction but not the other. I was able to make the combination, just not in the order I had originally tried.

Yeah, this has been a problem all along (at least since the new tag system was introduced). Although it's great to know the "workaround," it's also extremely easy to forget about it until after you've already created the "blank tag" proposal.

Bumping, since it was just reported again: http://www.librarything.com/topic/147845

Based on my debugging efforts today, the problem linked above (combining "health insurance" into health insurance) should now work, since the first tag starts with a quote. The problem as it exists today seems just to affect tags with non-initial quotes, so I think this thread's title is no longer reflective of the current problem (i.e. I think it's no longer possible to create a blank proposal). My bug report contains more precise, varied, and linked examples to diagnose exactly what tags do and do not cause problems, so at the risk of being presumptuous, I'm going to close this one and reopen mine.

omargosh, the general rule of thumb when a duplicate bug is created is that the older one takes precedence. Please post your details here, rather than closing this because of your duplicate.

Alright, alright.

The text of my bug report:
----

If you propose a tag combination from a tag page that includes a double quotation mark not at the beginning of the tag, the proposal will look from that page as if it hasn't "caught". What's happening instead is that a proposal is generated between the second tag and all of the text in the first tag up until the double quote mark ( " escaped as %22). However, if the quotes are at the beginning, everything is fine. And if the proposal is made from the tag that doesn't include quotes, everything is fine. Some examples:

Error-producing examples:
  • Combining John Luther "Casey" Jones with John Luther Jones from the first tag's page will instead result in a proposal between "John Luther" (a tag that doesn't even exist yet) and "John Luther Jones".
  • Combining Literatura" with literature from the first tag's page results in a proposal between "Literatura" and "literature", even though "Literatura" is already aliased into "literature".
Non-error-producing examples:

I thought this bug might have been the cause of the long-tag problem, thinking perhaps it was instead the greater-than symbol (>) throwing things off, but I was able to make a proposal from the Human-alien encounters > Fiction tag page just fine.

This is still a problem, fwiw. I tried to combine https://www.librarything.com/tag/%22faery and https://www.librarything.com/tag/faerie

I'm surprised people actually voted yes...

After all these years, can we please get this bug fixed?
