A decent collection by Inoue. Obasute was a slightly disappointing story but the other two - The Counterfeiter and The Full Moon - were both good.
In all three stories though I felt a little removed from the events; like there was a layer of emotion or thought in the characters that I was being denied. I know from other novels this isn't a Japanese thing, so perhaps it's a result of Inoue's background in journalism? A tendency to report straight facts and whatever is visible only on the surface? This wasn't a problem in his earlier story, The Hunting Gun, but maybe that is because that novella was longer and allowed the author more time to draw out his characters.
This book isn't as good as The Hunting Gun but it's a pleasant diversion show more and it's nice to see more of Inoue's writings outside of his historical fiction. show less
